I'm so disappointed with the grooming salon here. I took my 7 month old Shiffon there the day before Thanksgiving and she was there for 4 hours. She was supposed to be shaved down and trimmed up after her bath and nails were done. Although she smelled lovely, the only hair cut on her whole 14 pound body was the hair above her eyes, her paws and her bum. (Essentially just a puppy cut) We were charged $61.00 ($51 after a coupon) but I just felt it is bad business to charge someone full price for 1/4 of the job. Two days later, she looks just as shaggy as she did before I took her in and I have to find someone else to get it done properly. I'm definitely going to take my business somewhere where they won't charge full price for an incomplete job.

Clean with friendly employees. This location is a bit smaller than the ones I usually go to but they're close to work so it's convenient.

Southland Dog Training - Meet the Team

Southland Dog Training

Southland Dog Training is amazing…read more Before they'll even work with you, they send out a professional to assess your dog in your home. They then walked me through the process, what things I needed and a very low pressure sales talk. I was looking to get my pup trained as a therapy dog and signed up for the program. Initially there was a hiccup, the girl that was supposed to be my trainer came out once and then cancelled on me. BUT, the owner of the company, Vince, followed up with me and personally came out and worked with Chance and I. He was fantastic and I think both Chance and I learned more when he was working with us than ever before. Overall, we went through four total trainers, the first girl (who was promptly fired), the owner, and two other trainers. Despite the initial hiccup, I know I ended up with more sessions than I had paid for and their training comes with a lifetime guarantee. Meaning, if I notice Chance has a digging problem today, I could call them and they would come back out to work with him again. I love that they work with you in your home. I love that all of their trainers went to a serious professional school for dog training. Most of all I love that it's one on one meaning my dog will listen to me and not just the trainer. Definitely worth the investment if you want a well behaved pup. Especially because my little gentleman is invited to my office as a permanent fixture now. :)

Pros: of the 6 trainers I called Southland was one of only 3 that returned my call…read more They took a lot of time talking to me to determine our needs. I feel confident that their trainers could help our dog's problems. I explained that our dog was recently traumatized and is acting out, and as we're adopting a special needs baby soon I need to ensure that I can trust our dog. Cons: when the word "investment" was thrown around multiple times warning bells started ringing in my head and for good reason. A 30 session program was recommended, at the cost of $4500. That's $150 an hour. When I stated that I couldn't afford that an 8 week program was offered for $1400 ($175/hr). When I stated that I couldn't afford that either the conversation was politely, but promptly, ended. I fully believe this company would do a good job but unless you can afford a few thousand dollars out of the gate, this company isn't for you.

Net negative training program. I actively recommend avoiding training at this location, as it will…read morenot only not be a benefit, you will experience regression. If you need sales training though, highly recommend. Reply: Sure, my problem was that your training methods are ineffective, inefficient, and a waste of time. You basically wanted me to choke my dog more to get him to do a behaviour. I'm not saying negative reinforcement does not work to extinct a behaviour, but you really just went all in on the negative or "bribe" idea. For what you charge, the information is very shallow and not at all what I would expect at the pricepoint you think you are.The solution was to not train with you, and to employ methods that are actually effective. For example, I specifically requested to train the send out. You in no way shape or form did any training to accomplish this simple task. I was able to train this trick to two different dogs in 2 sessions very easily. Now its a game we do regularly. If what I asked for was outside of your normal policy, why did you not say no? You knew you wouldn't be able to deliver what I was asking. Did you just want to make the sale? Seriously what did I pay you for? To learn what not to do? I guess that was money well spent.

I paid $3,150 for a 4.5-week Board & Train program that I never actually received. The only service…read moreprovided was a $50 evaluation, which consisted solely of questions -- no training was done with my dog. During the evaluation, I expressed uncertainty about committing, but I was pressured into taking out a loan on the spot. At no point was I informed of their 24-hour no-refund policy, and when I tried to cancel, Elliot said he would "find out how to cancel the loan," yet he just kept my money and refused to refund any of my payment. Their policy effectively allows them to retain thousands of dollars even when no real services are delivered. I ultimately chose not to continue with their services, and I felt misled and frustrated by the lack of transparency. Make sure you fully understand all policies before enrolling.

My initial…read moreconsultation with Taylor was great, she asked a lot of questions about my Malinois rescue and what I was looking to get out of training. I explained to her that there were a few areas that he and I could use some help in, and we got the ball rolling. Brent showed up on the day of pickup and walked me through the process of what to expect during the time he would be training Kona and what kind of updates I would get. I got daily pictures and updates on his status. All I can say is wow, when Kona came back, he was a different dog. Brent spent about 2.5 hours with my family explaining how to integrate the training he used into our lives and how to use the tools he provided us with to make sure Kona succeeds. I think he trains the owners more than the dogs (lol). After we went through his training it was time to put it to use, he had my wife, and I walk Kona, and he gave us tips on how to correct behavior and relax and enjoy the walk. Thank you to Brent and his staff for helping us help Kona be a successful rescue and a huge part of our family.

The one star for the training, and the lack of stars for unprofessional conduct from the owner…read more(Brent). Our dog went through professional behavioral training through another company years ago. He had a solid baseline for learning and commands (sit, heal, place, etc.). Our primary issue was our dog's reactivity. We needed more help on how we as owners could manage this better. We decided to go with Ridgeside K-9 based on their stellar reviews and 4 week behavior modification board and train. Brent picked our dog up and was very thorough on what the plan was. We received a picture/video just about every evening with minimal communication attached. We were trusting their process. During the turn over, everything went well. We did notice our dog had lost a good amount of weight. He was never over weight by any means, but now we can really feel his ribs, spine, and hip bones. Nothing unhealthy though. We also noticed his bark was very different, and we figured it was due to him barking in the kennel during the turn over. Just over a week went by, and our dog's bark was still extremely weak. That coupled with our dog's weight loss had us a little uneasy. When confronting Brent over a phone call out of concern for our dog he became extremely defensive. He heatedly said our dog about drove him insane for 2 weeks due to his barking (which he never thought to mention previously), and then asked if we see a difference in him considering the training. I said not significantly. As mentioned, we've worked our dog for years, and the technique Brent taught us regarding our dog's reactivity is new to us. It had been just over a week and we were still learning to manage and get the results we need. However, before I could elaborate on any of this Brent completely flew off the handle. He was literally YELLING at me over the phone, saying I don't know what I'm talking about, we are the problem, and that I am a person who worries too much. I simply wanted to talk to him out of concern for my dog, and I felt like that meant nothing to him. My husband intervened on the phone due to Brent's disrespect toward me and it only got worse from there. We didn't get a hint of this instability throughout our prior interactions with Brent, and this left both of us completely in shock. Once things cooled down, Brent went back into a mode of wanting to help. Although this was appreciated, the damage was done. Brent has a lot of passion and pride in his work, but his temper concerns us greatly. It was like a switch, and there was ABSOLUTELY no excuse for that level of disrespect towards us.

While I don't…read more know exactly what happened during the first part of his life, it was clear he came with a tremendous amount of fear and insecurity. For the past five years, I poured everything I had into helping him, but there were some things I simply couldn't overcome on my own. Luke wasn't just anxious-he was an extreme anxiety case. He has severe storm and crate anxiety, had broken out of multiple crates and severely injuring himself in the process, and had a bite history. He struggled with strangers, especially men, and I honestly wasn't sure anyone could help him at his age. From day one, Ray approached Luke with incredible patience, compassion, and a genuine desire to understand Luke - not just apply a one size fits all training program. He learned what motivated Luke and adjusted his training to hit him. The transformation has been incredible. Luke can now calmly settle in a crate, has learned to stay focused on me instead of his surroundings, and is so much more confident around people. Just as importantly, Ray taught me how to better understand Luke's body language and redirect him before he becomes overwhelmed. He didn't just train my dog, he taught me how to help him succeed. I was terrified to send Luke to board and train. I was worried he would bite Ray (he definitely tried a few times), shut down, or feel abandoned. Instead, Ray kept me updated, showed incredible patience, and never gave up on him. The biggest testament to Ray's work is their relationship. Luke has always struggled with men, but now he gets excited every time he sees Ray. The first time I dropped him off to board after training, he happily walked right inside with Ray and didn't even look back at me. That moment meant everything. Ray makes training fun, and the dogs genuinely love him. Beyond the training, Ray has given me something priceless: peace of mind. For years, I avoided vacations and taking any time away because I never trusted anyone to keep Luke safe. Now I finally have someone I trust completely. I met with several trainers before finding Ray, but something never felt right until I met him. If you have a dog with anxiety, fear, or behavior challenges, don't give up. Ray is patient, compassionate, and truly trains the dog in front of him, not the dog he wishes he had. Thank you Ray, for believing in Luke and teaching me how to be a better owner to him.
