It has been six months since we adopted a soon-to-be senior kitty who is 10 years old. We were very happy with our experience at this small shelter that was attentive to us as soon as we walked into the space. After a long day of waiting on kittens in Austin proper and watching them all get adopted before we got a chance to see them (I say this in the most loving & happy way too), I told my partner we should try coming to Pflugerville and see what the cats there. We were VERY happy we did. From walking in to signing the paperwork for adoption our experience was positive and loving. The volunteer that cared for our cat then was super sweet to us and to our cat as she said her goodbyes to her when she found out we wanted to adopt her. The volunteer took great care of packing our cat in the carrier and even gave us the blanket, a few cat toys, and her cat brush in a nice bag with other goodies, food, and even supplements from Tomilson's Pet Store (a great Austin pet store). We loved the sweet care and transparency around our adoption. Because we adopted a senior cat our adoption fees were waived and the health report the shelter provided to us was informative for us on determining what kind of care we would expect when we adopted her. I really appreciated the transparency from the staff about our adoption. They were professional and were very kind and patient with us on all our questions around our new loving cat. What a great success story it has been for us in adopting Dusty. She was a surrender from her previous owner but now is in our loving home and receives all the treats and wet food she wants in her senior days. I reported a vicious dog at a residence nearby that attacked my miniature poodle to both my HOA and Animal Control. The HOA would require an owner to get rid of a dog, who is a disturbance, but does nothing about a vicious dog. I would not want to see a person lose their beloved dog, but if someone would address the issue and perhaps, give them a warning, the owner would ensure that the dog behaves better. After speaking with 311, I was informed that they could send the owner brochures on leash laws, since my dog was not bitten. That just doesn't seem to suffice and I implied that. Then, it was mentioned that an officer could go out to speak with the owner. I don't feel confident that this will be addressed. I Pray that this dog doesn't viciously attack another dog or person to the point where it is more detrimental. It seems the dog and his owner are being given a pass because my dog was viciously attacked without being bitten and the owner tried to remove her dog, after the attack. The owner should have removed her dog immediately, when I first asked her to get her dog. I believe that she felt like the course was clear because her dog started off just sniffing my dogs, before viciously attacking my dogs. Just sending leash laws without someone addressing this issue will result in a repeated attack. The dog clearly needs to be trained. Otherwise, this goes across as being acceptable. read more

Small shelter (low funding), very cute animals, and the staff was very unfriendly and cold. The front guy with dark curly hair was from the start rude and blunt , "escorted" us to the cat room with no supervision or instructions whatsoever. Rest of the staff also disregarded our presence the entire time, felt like they hated their job and us being there. You'd think they respond in a timely manner when you take the time to complete all of the orientation, paperwork and the like... NOPE! It takes Jessica Liley, the PAWS Coordinator months before she responds, truly unprofessional and a total disregard for other people's time. What's so hard about responding to emails, calls and inquiries in a timely manner? You can't poss be so busy that you don't respond and or out takes MONTHS before you respond. These are volunteer positions, it's not like we're getting paid. You should at least appreciate the fact that we've actually taken the time to complete all of the requirements. read more

I ignored the low reviews and came here anyway. Experienced first hand why this is a terrible place to seek out your rescue pup. We've been planning for a while and I finally made it a day to explore various shelters to see if we could find the right fit. The young man that helping us was rude as hell, impatient and made me feel like I was wasting his time. I guess they don't appreciate a family that is taking adoption seriously and trying to find a fit so that they don't have to bring the dog back. Horrible service for a cause that is supposed to be a fulfilling experience. Needless to say, will adopt from another place that appreciates its customers. read more

I called yesterday to ask if there were any kittens available for adoption. The person who answered the phone said there was 1 kitten that was spayed and "ready to go". They failed to mention that she was on hold. When I arrived to the shelter to adopt the cat, I was told to fill out an application and that there were 2 other applicants for the cat prior to me so I'd have to wait for a call back. I don't understand why I was told on the phone that the kitten was READY TO GO when she was really on hold and most likely already getting adopted by someone else (which she did). We stopped by here the other day as we are thinking of adopting another dog, it is tucked away in a residential area...don't try to call as the phones will most likely be unmanned just show up and just walk to the back where the animals are. They had quite a few volunteers there walking the dogs and taking them in and out of their cages for daily exercise. The cages are small, but reading through the reviews, it looks like they are trying to work with what they have. We spoke with one lovely volunteer who's husband just passed away and was doing this to keep from going crazy and she told us the director is trying to make more improvements. They have quite a few larger dogs, they seemed well taken care of considering. Not too many smaller dogs, so we couldn't adopt with them as our little girl is only 20 lbs but they have quite a few pitbull/lab/boxer mixes. The dogs seemed pretty happy overall, there were some naughty looking ones but it is a local shelter and would benefit greatly from local support and donations. read more

(CONTINUED)... So we decided to adopt our princess form the Pflugerville Animal Shelter. I asked the office staff if we could pick her up earlier than they open (11am) and they said no problem to just call and they would open the gates for us. I thought this was a nice gesture. When we arrived, they opened the gates for us quickly and within 10min or so we were done. Paperwork signed and our princess was out with us in the field walking and sniffing around! I came in with a list of questions I wanted answered and Officer Goodson was very helpful and patient answering everything as best she could. It was a good experience and so far things have been going well. Our new addition to the family is adjusting to us pretty well and vice versa. Any animal can be challenging but we feel we made the right decision by adopting her! read more

Hi Fellow Yelpers, I am writing this review in an attempt to bring some much needed attention to the plight of the animals at the Pflugerville Animal Shelter. It's pretty awful in there, and it is a kill shelter. The cages are very small concrete cages. The place is handled by the Pflugerville Police Dept. and most of the time the officers in charge are out on calls. They do their best, but it's not nearly enough. There is no heat or A/C. Sometimes the animals spend months waiting for a home. PLEASE... if you are even thinking about adopting a pet, call 990-PETS or Lynn at Lynn's Pet Sitting... she is a volunteer and can help arrange for you to see the animals. (Lynn's Petsitting 512-587-8221) Right now we are trying to get the City of Pflugerville to allot funds for a modern shelter. Last month I was lucky enough to go to the new "Open House" event at the Pflugerville Animal shelter, and things have changed, the officers, the community and the volunteers, have put a lot of work into this place, and it is really quite nice now, shoot, in one of the dog runs a Boy Scout built a Gazebo for a merit badge for the potential pet-parents to enjoy while socializing with the dogs! Yes it may not be Shangri-La or the Garden Of Eden yet, but it seems to me like they are really trying, Donations of time and money are needed, Rome was not built in a day. read more

I had a really good experience at the Pflugerville Animal Shelter. I adopted my one year old Vizsla pit mix for $20 with a microchip and a free vet visit. They are practically paying you to take these dogs off their hands. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful the volunteers we're great. We did a meet and greet with my Rottweiler at the shelter to make sure the dogs could get along before we took them home, even when we took Bonnie home with us it was on a foster basis over the weekend but we came right back up and finished the adoption on Monday. My point is they are doing a good job of responsibly adopting out these dogs and I highly recommend the Pflugerville animal shelter. read more

I feel bad giving this review having met the employees. I understand that funding prevents good care a lot. I feel the need to let others know what exists at this location. I saw a Great Dane (~150lbs) in the smallest of the cages while a small dog (~20lbs) was in a large cage. The Great Dane was so large, it was unable to turn around. Perhaps with better funding, the facility can expand or be kept in better condition. The Georgetown Animal Shelters are a great example of the type of environment the dogs and cats should be kept in. I left the location in tears because I felt so bad for the animals in Pflugerville. I signed the petition from the previous review. I am glad others are aware. read more

We adopted a kitten from the shelter in March 2018. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Even though the shelter was going through a renovation, it was clean, the cats had multiple areas to either be by themselves or with other cats. I did appreciate that they had separate rooms where you could interact with a cat on a one to one basis. When we brought our kitten home, we worried how she would interact with our large dog, but quickly realized that the kitten wanted to be as close to our dog as she could be. We later learned that our kittens foster family had dogs. I do like that they spay the kittens before releasing them to a family, which also allowed my kids time to bond with our kitten at the shelter before we brought her home. read more

Hopefully people will avoid the early reviews as this place must have had a complete upgrade. We are new to the area and had a dog come to our door. I brought the lost dog there and it is a very nice facility. The women working there are very courteous and caring. I will hopefully be adopting the dog I dropped off if no one comes in to get her. New air conditioning units and temperature control and daily walking of dogs in the fenced and gated play areas allow for outside fun. Lots of animals that need homes. This shelter is working hard to offer the best environment possible with the resources they have. Every dog is walked at least once a day and allowed outside for playtime. The staff and volunteers consists of people who do more than care for those animals. They seem to dedicate their lives to helping them in anyway they can. I tried to send a donation to the Pflugerville Animal Shelter at the address on the Web and it was returned because there is not a mail box there. I had called before mailing it and left a message on the answering machine for someone to call me. I left my name and telephone number. No one called, I mailed the check and it was returned. Today as I was leaving a message the phone was answered. I asked again about the mailing address and was told I had to send the donation to the Pflugerville Police Department at P. O. Box 679, Pflugerville, TX 78691. I have posted this just in case anyone else would like to send a donation. I have never been to the locaition so I cannot give it a review. read more

This is a hidden gem of a shelter. Not enough people know it exists. I am a new volunteer and from what I hear, great improvements have been made in the past few years. The new director, officers & volunteers work hard to ensure this the best experience possible while the animals are in the shelter. Pflugerville Pets Alive and Pflugerville Pfurry Pfriends have events that bring in donations for a multitude of wants/needs. An indoor training room and meet/greet area should be ready Jan 2014. Plans for 2014 are to bring agility equipment in large play yards for the dogs. Volunteers can help even if they don't want to work directly with the animals. Come by and see for yourself and maybe find your next family member! read more

So my mothers dog got picked up by pflugerville animal control and they told my dad they would keep him for 4 days and we could pick him up. On the third day she went to see him they had him in a nasty crate with only a little towel underneath him. He was dirty his nose was bleeding and the lady that took my mom back was ridiculously rude to her telling her she couldnt stick her fingers in the crate of her own dog than was rushing my mom on how she had 10 minutes. They than tell her that she would have to wait 10 more days to pick him up when they promised us 4. Im giving 2 stars only for the fact that when my dad went to pick him up on the fourth day he got to speek to someone who ended up helping him out and let our dog out. The worst part was that he came home with a stomach issue and he is covered frok head to paw in ticks! This place is ridiculous if you do not have the resources to properly take care of animals than dont bother picking them up! read more

I called them and I left messages. I never once received a call back. On one occasion they answered the phone and I told them I wanted to come by at a certain time. The officer told me he would be there. I get there and the front gate is closed. I call back numerous times while I'm sitting in front of the gate and no one answers the phone. I left and went home. I called back numerous times and finally someone answered the phone. The same officer that told me he would meet me there proceeded to tell me that he was there and that the gate was open and he doesn't know where I went to, but he thought I went to the wrong place. I know I was in the right place because I went back later and the gate was open that time and I know that's the shelter. Basically, I'm trying to tell you that it's nearly impossible to get a hold of someone there, and if you do, don't trust anything they say. Not only is the shelter itself incredibly horrible, the people who run it are just as horrible. What a disgrace! read more

If you are thinking of adopting an animal here..think again! My 2 kids and I attended a Adoption Day at Petco in Pflugerville last Sunday held by Pflugerville Animal Shelter. We clicked with a little white dog named Sammy. We put in an application and were told by the volunteer that we were the first people to put in an app on Sammy and that we would basically have first dibs on Sammy. We were then told they would be reviewing applications for Sammy on the following Monday or Tues. Monday goes by no word, Tues I call around early afternoon and they tell me they placed Sammy with another family because they were the better fit? I asked how did they come to that determination? They said they other family had a fenced yard. Hello? When is it a requirement that one should have a fenced yard in order to adopt a homeless pet??? Granted I don't have a yard but I have a nice home and he would have been indoors all day. He was a Westminster so he's not a big dog and actually probably even more suited as an indoor dog. These people did not even CALL my references. After awhile I came to the conclusion that this dog was placed with an employee's friend or family member. This is a very unfair way to run an adoption process and therefore I will not be adopting any animal but I will look to buy one from Craigslist. They preach to the public to adopt instead of buying a pet but then they run shady practices behind the scenes are you are left trying to explain to your kids why they can not have the dog they had their hearts set on and were LIED to. SHAME ON PFLUGERVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER! I will tell everyone I know to go another shelter or Craigslist if they want a pet. read more
