This diner has been a hometown favorite for as long as I can remember. The prices are good, the food is consistently delicious, and the atmosphere feels like stepping back into the best parts of my childhood. On New Years day we randomly decided we wanted to 'go out for a coffee'. As you can imagine, not many businesses are open on New Years Day. The first two businesses we tried were closed, the third one, Phenix Square Restaurant, was open. Yay. Located on a triangle shaped town 'square', this restaurant has street side parking only, which is free. There are two steps up into the restaurant. One step up into a vestibule from the sidewalk. A second step up through a second door into the restaurant. We didn't see any staff when we entered, so we seated ourselves, which seems to be A-OK. Although the interior walls are a bit dated the décor is inviting and the tables and seats clean and in good condition. The restaurant has three dining areas. The main area includes counter seating and booths along the remaining three walls including a window wall at the front. The kitchen is in the back of this area. On the right side of the building, are two more smaller dining areas with tables and booths. The restrooms are located in between these two spaces. I think this separation of guests helps keep the noise level down and creates a more 'cozy' feel. The restrooms were very small and clean. No room in there for a diaper station. Two people were working during our visit, one as waitress, one on the grill. At a guess, I'd say there were maybe a dozen tables filled when we arrived, so perhaps 30 customers. Most of the people seem to be the 'regular' crowd. The waitress was composed and getting all the things done: taking orders, bringing out food, cleaning, bussing, refilling coffee, etc. She was friendly and unruffled by the crowd. She acknowledged us as soon as she knew we were there (as we sat ourselves while she was in one of the other two dining areas) and let us know she would be with us in a moment. She completed the tasks on hand then brought us menus and coffee. We had a good amount of time to review the menu. They serve breakfast 'all day' and lunch. This is more a breakfast spot as they close between 12:30 and 1:30 depending on the day. The breakfast menu offers set meals which can be tailored to your liking (type of meat you'd like, french toast or pancakes, etc.) or you can build your own. They also offer a few muffin varieties and oatmeal. We both went with their McPhenix breakfast sandwich which is egg and cheese on an english muffin to which you can add meat if you like. We were probably in the restaurant about half an hour before the food arrived. All the guests were very laid back, patiently waiting for their meals, chatting amongst themselves. No one was flustered or in a rush and I get the impression this is how it is here. Everyone's just here to enjoy some coffee and breakfast. Not in a rush to move on to the next thing. Plan on spending an hour or more here when you come. Definitely not a 'fast food' experience. I did notice a coloring book and crayons on a counter near the kitchen so they do have at least one activity to keep kids entertained. I did not notice if they offer Wi-Fi. Our breakfast sandwiches were tasty. The english muffin is grilled, which I do enjoy and the egg and cheese tasty and well cooked. My dining companion had bacon on his and they don't skimp on the bacon. The coffee is very good - none of that 'burnt coffee' taste you get from scalding the beans with water that is too hot. The coffee is served with cream on the side in a small pitcher. Sugar and sugar substitutes are on the table. Coffee refills included in the price. The woman working the grill owns the restaurant and the waitress is her niece! Originally working for the previous owner, the current owner has been here for 36 years I believe she said. When the original owner retired he sold it to her. A real 'family run business' with other family members helping out as well. We'd definitely come back on a leisurely morning and try some of the other breakfast options. The prices are good and the staff very pleasant. read more

I wanted to like Phenix Square Restaurant more than my couple of experiences afforded. The restaurant does have some things going for it... the customer service is on par, food is served quickly, prices are fantastic. Located near to the Pawtuxet River and across from a common park space (which in the wintertime is decorated beautifully for Christmas), sufficient parking may be located on the road. Both visits, I ordered the "Manhandler" which given the options, I opted for a heap of scrambled eggs, French toast, bacon, toast and homefries. Perhaps I experienced some bad luck but across the meals, I found egg shells in my eggs, relatively thin (versus hearty) slices of French toast, and underwhelming flavor in the homefries. One visit, my cup of white milk had a healthy dose of dirt particles floating at the top. The interior does show signs of aging, which normally I feel adds character to a place, but combined with the dirty glassware in which my beverage was served, gave me a sense of dinge instead of history. I was so disappointed the food came out quickly but wasn't even warm butter wasn't even spread just slapped on the English muffins which tasted very stale and the eggs were very watery -coffee had a sour taste and worse of all the homefries were more grease than there wereo potatoes. Honestly it was just a very sad state of events and the waitress wasn't very comforting as she told me" no one else complained" as I looked around there were 3 other customers -it wasn't fair that they served such medioca food when people today deserve much better! read more

First time visiting Phenix, it really through me back into the past the Diners I visited as a kid. Its Situated at Phenix Square , a true Ole Americana Village within the City Limits of West Warwick and Coventry Line. Yes Dated but it has its Charm!...Service was amazing, Breakfast was Delicious, We ordered the Phenix Omelet, a mix of veggies and meats, and The Pepperoni Omelet, they both came with homefries, toast and a great cup of Joe!!! Loved the home town atmosphere folks coming in greeting each other, prices can not be beat! it will keep regular coming back and newbies say WOW!!..A must come, visit and eat place ,after you enjoyed something from their meny..you can go outside and seat at the Square or cross the street to the Beautiful Walk/Bike Path!!..I will give lunch or dinner a try next trip!! ..Supporting Small places like Phenix we won't loose that Spirit of Community and Better Days!!..till next time!! read more

I walked here and had breakfast on a recent weekday morning, after I dropped my truck off at a nearby repair shop. Although the restaurant apparently hasn't been remodeled in decades, the food was better than I expected, and very reasonably priced. My meal consisted of scrambled eggs, French toast, bacon, white toast and home fries, all for about $8 - and that was one of their most 'expensive' breakfasts. Indeed, I saw many breakfast options for $5 or less, so this is a good place for those on a budget. But besides being a good value, the quality of the food was good. Everything on my plate was prepared competently, and tasted wholesome. Service on my weekday visit was excellent. The waitress was attentive, without being intrusive. It was humid that morning and a bit stuffy inside; the restaurant lacks air conditioning, and uses ceiling fans instead. I returned the following Sunday for breakfast, and got the same thing I'd ordered before, minus the French toast, and the food was just as good as my first visit. A different person waited on me this time, and her level of service was lacking compared to the first waitress; this one let my coffee cup ran dry. On the plus side, though, the place was not jam-packed, as some other breakfast places can get on a weekend, so you shouldn't have to wait to get a seat here. There is no parking lot, only on-street parking. Also, they are a cash-only business, which kinda goes along with their old-school atmosphere. read more

Man do I hate being the first one and I really hate giving this place 2 stars. So it is a quaint place in Phenix Square and looks to have some regulars. It looks as thought the place has been around for some time and has fare bit of mileage on it. I truly love diners in RI and I try to give the benefit of the doubt to places, but unfortunately this one just falls short all around. The service was just not there. Place an order, provide drink, someone else brings the food then here is your check coming from someone else. The advertised 'Bottomless Coffee' did have a bottom. It was the bottom of my first cup. Even though some others in the different area of the place were getting refills, no one could bother to come our way. The food was a bit drab. I, as per my MO, ordered their Corned Beef Hash. I asked and they did warm me it was canned, but she also mentioned that they did great work with it. Ummm, not so much. I am pretty sure it was the cheapest brand they could find and it was warmed in the microwave. Didn't even bother to stick it on the grill. The bagels and muffins were out of a wrapper. The butter was a glob of yellow oil (margarine). I am honestly not even sure the bacon was fried there. The pancake was close. Seemed to have some flavor, but it was very dense and under cooked (still a little mushy in the middle) Now, they do seem to have a few regulars and I am sure if you are there for eggs and home fries with toast, you would be okay. I think to if you are a regular, you might get a bit more attention then the new-be. But, I am sad to say that I will not be returning. read more

Phenix Square is an institution! This place has been around forever. You want a decent breakfast or lunch at a really reasonable price this is your place. Best breakfast special around...two eggs, hash browns and toast for like $3! I love the Egg McPhenix - egg sandwich with crispy bacon please! My hubs and kid love one of their usual daily specials...SOS on toast. Larger groups can be comfy at the bigger tables in the back. Be advised...it is cash only! read more
