Phil & Jim's has been a place my family has been going to for decades and I finally got the chance to have my wife and kids try it and they loved every bite. We came several times during a one week trip and they never disappointed. We reside in California so when they first saw what a real large steak and hoagie looks like it was funny. The bread is always amazing and I feel like there is no place that get it quite like theirs. From the Turkey hoagie, turkey cheese steak and regular cheese steak they don't skimp on the protein and the way they make sure every bite of the sandwich has meat finely chopped makes it a great choice no matter what you choose. The chips add to what is already a meal for perfection. Customer service is top notch. The ambiance has a real nice mom and pops feel and the owners eat their own food which speaks volumes. Can't say enough great things about Phil & Jim's and would love to see one on the West Coast but until then it just means more visits out East. read more

Probably a 4.5 and a really good stop. Came in a Saturday before heading to a Nova game at the Wells Fargo. Really clean, well lit counter on entering with helpful, friendly staff working. Ordered a cheesesteak with fried onions and a chicken tenders platter. Head through the kitchen to the dining room. Plenty of local memorabilia as well as Birds, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers. They bring your food to the table. The cheesesteak was really good. As was the chicken. Like I said. Could go higher. This is my only visit so will definitely go again. read more

I would have previously rated this place a 4/5 out of 5 and considered it one of the better cheesesteaks I've had anywhere. Unfortunately, this visit was a much different experience and felt closer to a 3-star visit. The fries were undercooked compared to what I've received here in the past, and the cheesesteak itself seemed to have noticeably less meat than previous orders. There also continues to be confusion about where customers should line up and who is next to be helped. As a first-time visitor, it would be difficult to know where to stand without feeling like you're cutting in front of someone. What stood out most was the atmosphere. The staff working the line seemed unhappy, and I overheard the cashier and another employee discussing my wife's order and what had actually been written down. It created an uncomfortable experience and gave the impression that things weren't running as smoothly as they once did. Had a really negative experience today. I go there all the time and they let people in until the doors close at seven. Today there was a new person I never seen working the grill and she very clearly wanted to shut down early so I was denied the right to use the dining room room. I'm in there all the time and they were gonna make me like stand outside and wait for my Uber with a large cheesesteak. Just so the owner knows I decided instead of being disrespected I would just go ahead and take my business somewhere else and they threw the cheesesteak in the trash. I was ordering a hoagies when he started on mine he ran out of lettuce and took one out of an unwashed box. Just cut with dirty knife that he just cut tomatoes with no wiping cut lettuce without washing it. I said aren't you going to wash it. He told me he would do it his way and that was it. He was nasty said that the way we do it. Little dirt that is on it wouldn't hurt me. I said you keep them and never will go back. I asked for a box so I can feed the trash to my animals and they gave me a box with pencil stabbings in it. I asked why there are holes in my box and they said it's for ventilation. This is the real deal and they'll make your cheesesteak as you like without any objections or hassle. I like that you can order your own way here as you should be able to do in life. My large cheesesteak came with lettuce, tomato, Mayo, fried onions, mushroom and American cheese. That's how I like it, don't judge. It was $20 and was more than enough for two people. I loved it and will be back again next time I'm driving near the airport and I-476. I really want to try other items on the menu and certainly will when I return. This place won the cheesesteak madness and has been featured in the local press lately. I ate here for the first time last year during my annual visit for the holidays. After dealing with sub-par hoagies on the west coast, I was pleasantly surprised by what this place has to offer. I ordered the Italian and the buffalo chicken cheesesteak. I thought they were both pretty good. The reason for the unfavorable rating is their customer service. I told my family about how good the place was last year, and took their orders to pick up some sandwiches for everyone. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the shop during their published holiday hours to find the lights off and the shop completely empty. It'd be one thing if this was a fluke, but this also happened to me when I tried to go for the first time last year! As a college soccer coach Gia was hands down the easiest and most efficient person I've worked with when ordering food for after a match. Gia made it super easy to order 36 total subs and upon delivery they were all packaged individually and all 36 cheesesteaks/chicken cheesesteaks were accounted for. She also had a cheesesteak bowl option for a player who has a gluten allergy. Gia provided plenty of utensils which made it easy to eat on the bus. My buddies mother swore by this place when she was younger (over 40 years ago) so I had to let her know what it's like today. Upon walking in I saw a few guys waiting on various items (cheesesteaks, hot dogs with cheese and onions) and they all looked and smelled great. I went to order and was greeted by a dark long haired surly fellow who when I asked what do you recommend, replied "Sorry I don't eat here, so I won't be much of a help." Charming! I asked what was on their special Italian hoagie, he had no clue, luckily he was saved by a co-worker who told me they use capicola, ham, cheese, salami, topped with a peppered ham. *Side note I noticed they use Aversa's rolls. The sandwich was made to order and I requested lettuce, tomato and hot peppers. I ordered the small size which comes on an 8" roll as opposed to the large which may have been a 12". I sat on one of the stools in the back and enjoyed my sandwich even though it came with a side of sarcasm. It was a decent sandwich with a bit too much oil. You pay for your order afterwards and apparently they have a front and back register. After staring at me three times my new best friend said, "Oh, you'll have to pay at the front, sorry" I guess he doesn't know how to ring up customers either. Decent sandwich, unnecessary attitude. Everyone has a bad day, but a customer should never know it! Thankfully, the rest of the staff was friendly. I had the worst tuna hoagie on Earth from Phil and Jim's. Never order their tuna. It tasted like they opened a can of tuna and mixed it up with some mayo and threw it on a hoagie roll. To make matters worst we all ordered the same thing and we're all disappointed. We have ordered their cheese steaks several times in the past and they were always good ( Not the best on Earth though, That would a big exaggeration. ) But you know how sometimes you have a taste for something different and so you opt for a tuna sandwich or something other than the regular steak sandwich. Googled and suggested Phil & Jim's. We tried it and boy are we glad we did! It's become a new fan favorite...especially during this pandemic when we are not going out at all. Fast, friendly service. I have yet to encounter anyone on the phone that has not been nice. I am never put on hold. I never have to wait. There pick up time is suuuuuper quick! Ordering from Cocco's, there is usually a wait, often people can't hear me, I have to repeat myself, they sound confused, etc. and then the wait time for pickup is 30-40 minutes and my husband has to wait longer once he actually gets there. Phil & Jim's usually gives us a 15-20 wait time and it's always ready with the exception of the fries which they intentionally wait to drop so they are fresh...which we don't mind. Their cheesesteaks are delicious. Their buffalo chicken cheesesteak is so good. I love that they wrap them a million times so they aren't soggy at all. And I mean, AT ALL. A lot of times when you get a cheesesteak for delivery it gets soggy in the crease from the moisture. Not here! The buffalo chicken cheesesteak isn't too hot but it isn't lacking spice, either. I do wish it was a little cheesier with American. The first time we ordered it was super blue cheese-y so I've been asking ever since to go light on the blue cheese so I can get more of that gooey American cheese but I would still like it to be more...you can't really taste it. My husband and Mom enjoyed their regular cheesesteaks just as much. The fries are good but we do prefer a crinkle fry to this style. The onion rings were ok. I've had better. The chicken strips were pretty good. They are a little on the high side price-wise. I'm not sure if prices went up because of COVID or if this is typical. Overall, this is one of the best cheesesteaks nearby and I would highly recommend them. Got a buffalo chicken cheesesteak from here (with high expectations considering the reviews) this place did not disappoint! The price was a bit steep but for what you get, the flavor/presentation, definitely worth it! Perfect amount of buffalo sauce so it didn't overpower the flavor or texture of the chicken itself- this was NOT San extremely sloppy sandwich where the bread was soggy and everything was falling apart which is a HUGE pet peeve of mine so i was extremely pleased when i unpackaged the sandwich. As you can see by the picture, they don't skimp on the size or meat. The picture is only half or a large. This hoagie is really good. However, it was $20. If you're looking for a cheaper option, go a tenth of a mile down the road on Edgemont to Brookhaven Market. They have 12" hoagies for $3.99. I flew into Philly to meet up with friends before heading to a wedding in Rehoboth Beach. We only had about an hour before skipping town so I told my buddy before I boarded my flight to make a plan for something delicious when I landed. I don't have time to go back so I reply to the order email, including a picture of the mistake, to get a refund. The "owner" Dan Miller replies and told me they'd issue a refund. Since that time, I've received no refund. I've emailed Dan back and forth 12 times, was promised a check since they couldn't figure out how to refund my credit card and still haven't gotten a check or any other form of refund since. Next week will be 3 months since this happened. If this is how you run your business, I'll go elsewhere.
