I'm not sure whether to rate the Philadelphia 76ers three stars ("OK") or four stars ("Good") on Yelp. I'll go with four because the Sixers have won three NBA championships (1955, 1967, 1983) and in recent decades, they've made the playoffs - and won - more often than not. The Sixers' three titles are tied for sixth-most among the NBA's 30 teams. The team is tied with the Detroit Pistons (1989, 1990, 2004) and the Miami Heat (2006, 2012, 2013). When I think of the Sixers, the first thing I think of is Allen Iverson and the 2001 NBA Finals. The Sixers drafted "the Answer" with the first overall pick in the 1996 draft. Iverson played 12 seasons as a Sixer and racked up many achievements. He was the NBA regular season MVP for the 2000-01 season. He also led the league in scoring four times: 1998-99, 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2004-05. Unfortunately, the Sixers lost, 4-1, to the Shaq-Kobe Los Angeles Lakers in the 2001 Finals. The Sixers had quite the team then, with Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo, Sixth Man of the Year Aaron McKie, and Eric Snow as Iverson's top supporting cast. Raja Bell came off the bench to defend Kobe. Georgia Tech alum Matt Geiger contributed off the bench as well. Larry Brown won NBA Coach of the Year that year (2001). I'm not old enough to remember the Sixers' heyday in the early 80s with Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, "Dr. J" Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, and Bobby Jones. That team swept, 4-0, a Lakers team that featured Kareem Adbul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, and was coached by Pat Riley. After the ABA-NBA merger prior to the 1976-77 season, Dr. J spent his entire NBA career in Philly (11 years). Dr. J's Sixers career overlapped with Charles Barkley's when the Sixers drafted "the Round Mound of Rebound" with the fifth overall pick in 1984. Dr. J retired after the 1986-87 season. Barkley was traded to the Phoenix Suns during the offseason in 1992. Post-Iverson, the Sixers have mostly been unmemorable. The team had two Rookies of the Year in a five-year span: Michael Carter-Williams in 2014 and Ben Simmons in 2018. The Sixers drafted Carter-Williams with the 11th overall pick in 2013 and Simmons with the first overall pick in 2016. Both players dealt with various injuries and didn't last long in Philly, with Carter-Williams being traded away in just his second season and Simmons in what should have been his fifth season. Simmons never played his true rookie season (2016-17) due to injury and he was a holdout during the 2021-22 season. Good luck to the Brooklyn Nets with Simmons. Joel Embiid, who was drafted by the Sixers with the third overall pick in 2014, is the best Sixers player of the last 10 years. However, even Embiid has been sidelined for many games due to various injuries. Now while Simmons missed what would have been his first season, Embiid missed what would have been his first *two* seasons (2014-15 and 2015-16). Embiid has yet to play more than 68 games in a single season. Despite that, he's earned numerous accolades including 2023 MVP (first Sixer to win the MVP award since Iverson in 2001), seven All-Star selections, and two scoring titles (2022, 2023). In terms of durability, I have to mention Andre Iguodala who was a very durable player for the Sixers. Iguodala was drafted by the Sixers with the ninth overall pick in 2004. He started all 82 games in five different seasons, including one season when he averaged almost 40 minutes per game. That sounds unheard of in today's NBA with "load management." They don't make players like they used to. Much respect to Iguodala in that regard. After being named an All-Star in his final season in Philly (2011-12), he went on to win four championships with the Golden State Warriors. He was an integral bench player for the Warriors. Finally, I have to give a shout-out to another Georgia Tech alum who played for the Sixers -- Thaddeus Young, who the Sixers drafted with the 12th overall pick in 2007. While he never developed into an All-Star, Thad had seven solid, productive seasons for the Sixers. His best NBA seasons arguably came in his last two years in Philly when he averaged highs in points (17.9), steals (2.1), and minutes (34.6) per game. Took my kids to their first 76ers game before everything shutdown as a result of COVID. We had nice seats on the lower level in one of the corners. Fortunately, the Sixers dominated much of the game, which always adds to the overall enjoyment! But pre-show, halftime, and little things they do throughout the game are fun and entertaining. Wish game tickets were not so dang expensive and then it's another $22 to park and about another $50 for a slice of pizza and a drink for my kids. :-/ My boys want to go back for another game, but looks like that's going to have to wait until next season unfortunately. PA I always thought that the 76 ers Organization was very customer centric. But but I do question why they let season ticket holders in 90 minutes before the game and everyone else has to wait until 60 minutes before the game? The sooner you let people in the sooner they start buying stuff. The only thing that comes from telling people you have to get out and wait another 30 minutes is that you frustrate everyone that has to turn around leave the building and wait outside whether it's a nice day or not. A pitiful, stomach-churning team right now. They would get one star but I like their new coach Doug Collins and a few of those rising star young kids. Now if they could only unload the overpaid, dead weight veterans still anchoring this team down like a pair of cement shoes. A very family oriented event, the 76ers make it fun to attend a game even when losing. They play games during the game such as musical chairs, mascot obstacle course, mascots and stunts men shooting, and a dance crew. The fans boo (it's still Philadelphia) but other then that were very laid back. The views of the court are excellent and there's a lot of games to play in the concourse. The only complaint is the ticket prices are on the high side. read more

I think the last time I attended a sixers game, AI was still on the team. Needless to say, it's been awhile, but it was too hard to pass up premium box seats, so I made a return last night to check out the team (and the complimentary food and drink in the box, of course). Despite the dismal record of the sixers, they put on a pretty good show. Every few minutes, something was happening, whether it was a massive t-shirt auto-cannon, acrobatic trick shots, or the appearance of Ben and Betsy (Franklin and Ross) who were accompanied by a life-size liberty bell. The game moved quickly, and all of the sideline entertainment was fun to watch. read more

The 76ers get 5 stars for their history, their future, and their central role in the Philadelphia sports quadrumvirate. It's an outrage that the Philadelphia 76ers, the holders of 3 NBA Championships, multiple Conference championships/Division titles, and an NBA team that featured some of professional basketball's greatest players, coaches, and teams including Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Dr. J, Mo Cheeks, Moses Malone, the entertaining Charles Barkley, Larry Brown, and AI (Allen Iverson, not artificial intelligence), has not been Yelped! I searched at least ten times for the team before concluding that no review had been written. Shameful, even the Philadelphia Soul (Arena football), Philadelphia Phantom (AHL hockey), and Philadelphia Wings (indoor lacrosse... yeah folks, that's right, indoor lacrosse...who the heck even watches indoor lacrosse?!?!?!?) got yelped before the 76ers. I came to the Wachovia Center in February to watch them play the lowly, tanking Miami Heat before a half-empty stadium. On a side note, the fact that the Miami Heat was able to field such a floundering, preposterous basketball team is an embarrassment to David Stern and the entire NBA. Little did I know that this victory over the Heat would be part of the 76ers unlikely and unexpected run to enter the 2008 playoffs, their first postseason appearance since 2005 and the first in the post-Iverson era. The game was fun to watch despite the lackluster crowd and lowly adversary*. I'm sure when the 76ers began their run to the playoffs, the masses finally came out of their post-Iverson depression and returned to support their fresh, new 76ers. I wish I'd gone to another game when the arena was full and when the 76ers were playing a tougher opponent. Undoubtedly, the notoriously tough Philadelphian crowds would've made any team (home or away) feel uncomfortable. The 2008-2009 season should be an extremely exciting one, especially with the signing of All-Star power forward Elton Brand. The 76ers basically achieved a coup with this acquisition from the LA Clippers. The newest 76er, Elton Brand, will be joining a solid core of Andre Iguodala, Samuel Dalembert, Andre Miller, and Thaddeus Young. The 76ers will be looking to improve upon last year's first round playoff exit to the Detroit Pistons, and should contend for one of the top spots in the Eastern Conference. So, buy your tickets now and get psyched for an exciting season! *The game was decidedly more entertaining when I placed a bet with my friend at the beginning of the 4th quarter on whether or not either team would break 100 points. Unfortunately, I lost because of Miami's atrocious defense and a blasted, last-minute, stat-padding 3-pointer. Yeah, I'm still bitter. Oh well, at least the home team won. **Oh yeah, take the SEPTA to all Philly sports games. This is a team that has definitely made its mark on NBA history: AI, Dr. J, and Charles Barkley are just three legends that made their name here and brought the team to playoffs, Finals, and even Championship glory. Moreover, it has one of the most "electric" and loyal fanbases I've ever seen. They've suffered: through a sub-par stadium that desperately needs a facelift and repair, and through a bunch of bad coaching regimes of late, beginning with the erratic genius Larry Brown and through Doug "Couldn't Win with MJ" Collins. Man! Recently, the Sixers have embarked on a period of mega-rebuilding that former General Manager Sam Hinkie, Sixers fans, and even players themselves call "The Process." The best way to understand it is through two social science concepts: "perverse incentives" and "unintended consequences," in this case of the NBA's draft lottery system, which rewards the highest picks (#1, #2, etc.) to the worst teams in the league. A team that wants to come close to guaranteeing a high pick is incentivized to lose as much as possible, bottom out, and appear at the top of the lottery. Perverse incentives to "tank" are an unintended consequence of the draft lottery structure. Philly has done this for the past 4 seasons, and it's been grueling, with television ratings and attendance plummeting. Some fans, though, counsel patience and "trusting The Process," Hinkie's name for this intentional abominable performance. Has it born fruit finally? It's a mixed tale, in my view. Joel Embiid has been injured all season for the past two seasons. Nerlens Noel's injuries haven't been as severe, but he too has also been frequently consigned to the bench in a suit for this reason. As a player, he's been less than transcendent in the post and looks really mid-level to me. Jahlil Okafor plays poor defense and appears to be an off-the-court malcontent who also possesses zero chemistry with Embiid. Ben Simmons hasn't suited up yet, but there are rumblings about his maturity and ability to shoot. Even if two of these four high picks become All-Stars, it'll take a while before a team with solid role players coheres around them. (Hinkie, BTW, was recently fired.) A couple years ago, I received an e-mail from a Sixers salesperson that warmed my heart. I'd only been to one Sixers game in my life (to watch my boy Pau Gasol and KOBE), and that's how they got my contact info. It was a personalized e-mail, and they wanted to sell me steeply discounted tickets. I said "No," and then on a whim, mentioned that I didn't like THE PROCESS. The dude offered to give me a call to explain the rationale behind THE PROCESS, though, and so I agreed. What happened? Ring, ring! I got a 30-minute lecture on who Sam Hinkie was, the history of the Sixers, how the draft lottery works, incentives, team-building: in a nutshell, THE PROCESS. It was all fascinating, and clearly a lot of effort was put into it. I felt bad when I said that I couldn't buy a ticket. (Sorry, I was living in Wisconsin at that point!!!) I give the team three stars, though, for endearing touches like 30-minute phone lectures on the PROCESS, plus cheesy sales lines like "CENTER CITY" to explain why they've drafted three freaking centers. They lose stars for taking Okafor over Porzingod. Whether Hinkie's PROCESS is a bust or not remains to be seen. Do you Trust the Process? Joel Embiid has nicknamed himself "Process." I'm less sure.
