The Flyers will always be a 5 star team because they play kick ass games. It might not always be about the wins or losses, but they don't take crap from the other teams and aren't afraid to push back. While in town on business myself and a few coworkers decided to catch a Flyers game and I'm so glad we did. We Uber there from our hotel to avoid the parking lots and all that madness. Dropped off right outside the lot and walked right up. They have lockers outside the arena that you can put your coat in if you don't want to lug it around all night or anything else you don't want on your person while at the game. The place was very clean, including the restrooms. We sat in the 200 section but still felt like we were right on top of the action. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Tons of food and drink options. Though it would have been nice had the drink and food prices were less, I have been to plenty of areas that were much more expensive. Great experience and can't wait to see another game. Highly recommended. read more

The good, bad, & the ugly of the Philadelphia Flyers: GOOD ~ The fans. Flyers fans are some of the most devoted sports fans in the country. They are passionate and knowledgeable, and love hockey for what it is in its rawest sense -- ballet & boxing on ice. ~ The arena. The CoreStates slash FU slash Wachovia center is a fantastic venue for hockey. There are no bad seats, the atmosphere is electric, and it's one hell of a good time. ~ The team. No matter where they are in the standings, the Flyers demand respect. Even last year, when they were a band of bumbling idiots, the players never quit on the season; but, they are rarely ever that bad. Usually the team is always competitive and a little mean. BAD ~ The upper management. They have never been able to get this team over the hump. From trading way too much to get Eric Lindros (Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne & more...) to not acquiring a real #1 goalie for any of their playoff runs (wait, you mean Garth Snow wasn't a #1??), the men upstairs failed on many levels. ~ The concussions. Want your NHL career to end in a hurry? Play for the Flyers. Just ask Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, Simon Gagne, and Jeremy Roenick. ~ The tickets. This is because they are near impossible to get, unless you want to shell out a couple hundred bucks. UGLY ~ The uniform. Those orange-ass jerseys. Gross. The logo is pretty bad also. Sorry. ~ Bobby Clarke. 'Nuff said. All in all, Flyers fans, while I don't like your team (for the record, I haven't had a favorite team since the Hartford Whalers high-tailed it to Carolina), I will give credit where credit is due. We won Luxury Suite tickets to the Flyers game at a beef and beer fundraiser Saturday night for an Abington, PA, police officer who was diagnosed with ALS. We were really surprised to have won and received such great tickets. Thanks to Pepsi for donating the tickets for such an important fundraiser. First of all the luxury suites are fantastic. Stocked with plenty of soda, beer and wine and is full catered. There was Caeser salad, hoagies, cheesesteak (meat, onions and wiz plus rolls to make your own), cheesesteak and pepperoni stombolis, wings with hot sauce, blue cheeseand celery. There was also a big bowl of popcorn and a huge fruit plate! We ate really well. Plus we had our own private bathroom! Such a big deal at sporting events. The game itself was awesome. It was the last game of their 50th season and even though they did not make the playoffs it was a back and forth exciting game against Carolina. The final score after OT and shootout was 4-3 Carolina. The Wells Fargo Center was about halfway full bcuz many people feel any games after they do not make the playoffs are pointless but we had a fantastic time. It was hubs first hockey game in person and he loved it! Overall great job done by all, our room serviceperson was Jennifer and she was fantastic and very sociable. read more

How do I begin a review of the Philadelphia Flyers? That's like reviewing the love of your life. You admire all her best qualities and willingly overlook her flaws. My love affair with the Flyers started at a very young age, trapped in my baby cage and watching every game with my father. He would eventually tell me that my first word was goal and that I would raise my hands in celebration as I screamed it. I remember the good times and the bad, watching Ron Hextall score two goals, nodding my head in approval as Hexy exacted revenge on Chris Chelios for destroying my boy Brian Propp, leaping for joy as J.J. Daigneault forced games 7 in the '87 Stanley Cup Finals, cheering as Keith Primeau scored the game winning goal in the 5th overtime in '00, wincing as Sami Kapanen courageously crawled back to the bench after being leveled by Darcy Tucker in '04, and stunned beyond belief as the Flyers came back from a 0-3 series and goal deficit to defeat the Boston Bruins in the '10 playoffs. I cherish all of these memories and anxiously await each game for the chance that new ones will be formed. Now that the Flyers have a strong group of players at each position, the games become even more exciting, as they look like a team who has a legitimate chance at bringing home Philly's first Stanley Cup in 36 years. Even if the Flyers fall short, though, I won't be disappointed. Each and every season, they are formidable contenders and I would rather be proud of a perennial playoff team with an owner who pours his heart and wallet into the club than a certain team on the other side of the state that dwells in the basement long enough to scoop up as many top first round draft picks as they can to win a shallow championship. read more

I wanted to make my 100th review something really special and didn't know what it would be till just the other day. Then as I found myself searching on multiple fan pages for some updates, rumors, and news flashes (in the dead of summer) I realized what #100 would be. I love you Flyers. I grew up going to games at the old Spectrum with my pops and best friend. I would doodle your insignia on all my school books growing up and couldn't wait for game night. I'd save all my ticket stubs from my games. I'd bug my parents to buy me a new jersey every year. I'd go to the game early so I could catch the pre-game warmup skate and go down to the glass and try and talk to the players and get them to toss me a puck. When you lost Game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, I cried my eyes out. For days. It still hurts. I was there when Hexy put one in and remember thinking that my head might explode. Watching Rick Tocchet get nitty gritty in a puck battle in the corner, fish it out and center it for a goal and then whoop someone's ass on the other team was my raison d'etre. When you sucked and were the worse team in the league a few years ago, I still tuned in to watch. That is the difference between Philly fans and all other fans. We are there thick and thin. I lived in LA and saw first hand how fair weather those Laker fans are when their team isn't performing well. We all know how bad attendance was in Pittsburgh and DC before they got their Ovechkin's and Crysby's. But not in Philly. Call it conspiracy theory but I also think the league has it out for us and calls us differently then other teams. How else do you explain that not only were we the most penalized team in the league AND every other team that we played had received less penalties against them while playing Philly last season?! Anyway, lets not harp on the BS that is the "new" double standard Gary Buttman led NHL. Let's focus on the positives: The big obvious one is we added Chris Pronger. Holy shit, I can't wait to see that guy in the orange and black. We have a goalie who has EVERYTHING to prove and should be playing for his hockey life. I'm optimistic. We have the batch of younguns (Carter, Richie, Hartnell, Coburn) who have a few years under their belts now and have seen and hopefully learned what it takes to go deep. Consistency and 60 minute efforts boys! We have one of the most exciting young players in Claude Giroux. Can't wait to see him play a full season in the big leagues. We have the vets (Kimmo, Gagne, Briere) who know they are getting no younger and THE TIME IS NOW! So I ask you, is it crazy that I'm a 31 year old and I want a new jersey of some kid that is in his 20's? Nah..... Once we win the cup you will get the full 5 stars! LET'S GO FLYERS!!!!!! read more

A Sabres Fan in Flyers country. A couple days ago, we traveled to Philly to visit friends and see the Buffalo Sabres play hockey against the Philadelphia Flyers. I guess this is more for anyone considering doing the same. I was a bit nervous, because honestly, Philly fans have a reputation, mainly for being some of the worst fans to opposing teams. This is what I experienced. There were four of us (safety in numbers), three Sabres fans and one Flyers fan. Figure it's good to keep the opposite team close. I wore my white away jersey. There was some heckling, a few comments and gestures, mostly "you suck" or "go home". A few fans were more animated than others, but at no time did I feel that my personal safety was in danger. It may have helped that the Flyers held the lead the entire game. Here's what surprised me. The number of Sabres fans, some who felt the need to not wear a jersey, that came up and said hi or struck up a friendly conversation. More surprisingly, the Flyers fans who almost immediately apologized for the other fans and were friendly and welcoming. One guy said, "We're not assholes, just passionate"! And passionate they are. The crowd in the arena was pumped, the atmosphere was electric. All hockey fans should go to at least one Flyers game to learn how to be passionate hockey fans. With three minutes left and the Flyers up by one, with the Sabres about to pull the goalie, we get a scene from "Rocky" with Burgess Meredith saying, "what are we waiting for?" Followed by the theme from "Rocky" and as if it were a muscle reflex, the roar of the crowd. At that point I knew the Sabres were doomed to a loss. So Philadelphia Flyers, as a Sabres Fan I humbly say that you have commanded my respect. You are truly among some of the most devoted fans out there in hockey. You have an excellent venue for watching the game, and I will gladly return for another game. Hopefully next time our Sabres will win. Keep the passion. If you are thinking about going to a game as a Sabres fan, be prepared for some animosity. And if you are a Flyers fan, comments are fine, we can take it. Just remember there is a fine line sometimes between being passionate and just being a jerk. read more

So this past weekend I went to my 2nd hockey game EVER and WOW was it action packed! On the ice AND in the stands. Hockey is probably one of the big Philly pro teams I'm least knowledgable of, but man what an exciting game for a newbie. And for those people that think Eagles fans are hardcore, I did feel a little bad for the lone Penguins fans surrounded and bullied by the Flyers fans - Imagine sitting there hearing the guy behind you shout "Crosby sucks!" into your ear the entire game. I felt a little sorry for him.. but hey, that's what you get when you are in enemy territory. But the passionate fans is what makes going to the games so fun. And watching the "Mites" play... The Philadelphia Flyers once battled back from three games AND three goals down in the playoffs to win their best of seven series. Also, the Flyers were an outside 8th place team on the last day of that same 2010 season but became a Stanley Cup contender almost overnight. Hockey doesn't do anything for me and I will never spend that kind of money on a ticket, but this local team sure is fun to watch. As long as your heart medication doesn't run out, feel free to turn them on. The Philadelphia Flyers have the most consistent loyal fanbase in my opinion of the Philly sports teams, not to mention the Phillies who have sold out many games due to their recent playoff streak since 2007. Phillies and Eagles fans are fickle and they boo, Sixers fans are a dying breed, but Flyers Fans have been deeply invested in this team for a long time. read more

The Flyers do their best to make a game fun. With games around the concourse, games on the scoreboard, and a great arena, the game is only part of the experience. The fans behaved fairly well other than booing, but that's to be expected. But for all the glory and fun there is a problem; the ticket prices. It costs more to go to a NHL game than a NFL game. I paid over $80 for one ticket and was only a few rows from the very top row. I know that some lower level seats go for almost if not more than $200. How so many people have season tickets is beyond me. Flyers games are a great experience once in awhile and hockey fans should consider coming but be careful of your budget. read more

Jay is right, ever since Chris Pronged left the team, they haven't been the same. Flyers used to be a feared team, even in the 90s. Guess Giroux and Hartnell (what a hairdo) can't do it all but why sign Lecavalier? He's been on the decline ever since winning the Cup with Tampa. And when they bought his contract out, I'm even surprised that owner Snider would go for it. And get a real goaltender, which has historically been the Flyer's Achilles heel. Handing the NHL the Flyers technique and game stratagy, Bobby Clark(prev.GM) left the team with nontradeables nailed with long and nonbreakable contracts! Although I'm not a Flyers fan (my loyalties lie with the Toronto Maple Leafs, yeah they suck currently), I love playing ice hockey and watching good hockey regardless of the teams. I kind of want to give them 3 stars just because the Leafs and Flyers have had some tough tough playoff series, but I'll let my bias slide for the review. The sport has the best attributes--high speed, fluid game play, bone-jarring hits, team camaraderie, beautiful passes and dekes, and the occasional alley fight. As a sport, it is also truly better live and in-person, especially at the Wachovia Center where all the seats offer great views despite being a bit cramped. The Philadelphia Flyers historically have been a team characterized for their bone-jarring hits, team camaraderie and the all too frequent alley fights. Although today's team isn't as belligerent as the Broad Street Bullies of the 70s, successful Flyers team certainly have a good bit of this heritage in the mix. Their current advance from the doldrums witnessed two years ago has been due to this return to basics of classic, hard-skating, tough hockey teams balanced with players who know how to put the puck in the net any way possible. A goal's a goal no matter how the puck gets in. Flyers fans are extremely dedicated to their team. They can also be rather foolish...like falling into the penalty box while the other team's enforcer is in it, e.g. Flyers fan and Maple Leafs' Tie Domi in 2001, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUCHRudon3U --it's a very entertaining clip. They also always seem to sellout no matter who they're playing against or how the team's doing. These fans seem to be much less fair-weather compared to other Philly sports fans. I wasn't able to get the tickets that I wanted for three years before finally lucking out and scoring tickets to see them play the Pittsburgh Penguins in the regular season and the playoffs. If you want to buy tickets at retail prices, you must buy them on the day that they're released, otherwise It's impossible. Waiting until gameday is not an option. Also, if you're a student, there are discounted rates available on their site (http://flyers.nhl.com/tickets/studentrush.htm). Today, the Flyers play in the Wachovia Center which is located in the same sports complex as the other Philly teams. I went to see them play the Pittsburgh Penguins, their main division and state rival. Both times they were extremely entertaining--you could feel the intensity on the ice and in the stands as the teams battled it out. In Game 4 of the 2007-08 playoffs, I saw the Flyers remarkably stave off elimination to the Penguins' All-Star lineup of Sydney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal, but they ultimately ended up losing the series in 5 games. The Penguins just had too many weapons. For some final notes, my tickets for Game 4 were in the all-you-can eat section and it was a great deal. Although all sporting events' food is over-priced, the all-you-can-eat deal made my endless chowing on hotdogs, nachos, and popcorn slightly less guilty. It certainly isn't hard to eat your value worth of food at those inflated prices. I also think Flyers games may be the only place that I've seen Molson on tap and trust to be fresh to drink. read more

The Philadelphia hockey crowd is certainly unique. I am a NY Rangers fan, but I have watched The Blackhawks, The Devils, The Islanders, and The Capitals all play within their respective stadiums. The Philadelphia Flyers fan is unlike any fan of the aforementioned teams. However, first I'll start with the infrastructure. The escalator is atrocious. What cost-cutting moron of an architect decided 1 escalator for the major entrance was a good idea? It is a major choke point for the line and crowds. The Stadium itself isn't bad. It has a decent amount of convenience stands, and the workers are very helpful. The VIP elevator is far enough away from the escalator entrance, so you can get right in if you have a box. This is the same city that threw snowballs at Santa Claus. And before any Philadelphian says, That was a long time ago, save your breath. I'll touch more on that later. The fans know little about hockey and seem to resent their own team more than the rival team they are playing. It certainly is bizarre. I don't quite know how to explain it. For instance, when I was attending one game in particular there were numerous "GET OFF THE ICE PRONGER" jeers. At the most recent game, against the Rangers they booed their own goalie! Wat?! The fans themselves are a lively crowd and quite hilarious to listen to. They have a natural timing and the ability to cut their own players down within a few minutes. The closest analogy I could make is that of the Philadelphia reddit, that was described as http://i.imgur.com/WdQlVwD.png It can also be said to be similar to the website Broad Street Hockey. Where it's more of a social hangout than a place to talk about the intricacies of hockey which is the opposite of what I am used to on Blue Shirt Banter -which can almost be too technical at times. Flyers fans enjoy pushing misery on their own team. They have an underdog complex, and ignore the fact they are owned by Comcast. The fans think it's still 1970s. Eventually the flyers lose (because hey, it's the flyers) and the fans start throwing bracelets (because hey, it's Philadelphia) on the ice. Despite being beseeched by the home announcer and Simonds (the assistant team Captain) and Ovechkin to stop. This of course, made the home announcer give up in disgust at his own home stadium. As a result of the fans they even refuse to move into the 1980s and adopt things like The Brooks system that emphasizes skating and playmaking in fluid, swirling patterns. Instead the flyers have two modes, panic and scramble. Both of which look identical to the untrained eye. They don't understand the role of a goalie and how to grow and maintain such a position. For example they had Bobrovsky, as a rookie! And because he didn't do so well, they signed Bryzgalov ("why you haff to be mad?") to a 9 year contract!? Today Bobrovsky is a Vezina Trophy award winner and Bryzgalov is washed up. I don't think he even plays anymore. The seats are expensive but not as outrageously priced as Madison Square Garden. You will be surrounded by electricians, carpenters, and their ilk. But overall it's a fun time that should be experienced. It's like watching MST3K riff on a bad movie. Oh and if they happen to play the Penguins, they'll play like it's the last game of The Stanley Cup Finals (amazing to watch) - and pay for it later in the season. read more

Honestly, there is no way that I could possibly describe the experience one gets at the Wells Fargo Center. No matter what the score is, the Flyers keep the action up during the games and after the games. Even though losing is hard, the Flyers always put on a good show for the audience. But when they win, the center is absolutely filled with the most amazing spirit. I can remember one playoff game that I went to against the Devils, and as we were leaving, we were lost in a sea of orange and black, and sang "Let's Go Flyers" with the thousands of other people surrounding us. Some of the best memories that I share with my dad reside in the Wells Fargo Center and with the Flyers. Despite being an amazing hockey team, they always find some way to connect with each fan, which is quite remarkable and makes for an unforgettable experience.
