If you are a Hockey fan, despite who you root for, there is no escaping the fact the Flyers are one of the most popular teams in the NHL. They are second-best in the NHL, behind only the Montreal Canadiens in all-time points percentage and were the only NHL team to defeat the Soviet Red Army team in the Super Series '76. The series had the Soviets playing against NHL teams. The Red Army team had already beaten the NY Rangers, Boston Bruins, and tied the Montreal Canadiens, before being soundly outplayed and beaten by the Flyers 4-1. A Phila Flyers game is a great time for all, highly energetic and electric arena with plenty of food and beverage options. Be sure to purchase a 50/50 ticket when your at the game as it supports Flyers Charities. The funds raised by Flyers Charities help support hundreds of non-profit organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region, including the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. Flyers Charities supports a multitude of worthy non-profit organizations that provide educational and recreational resources to under served youth, engage in important medical and healthcare research, and countless community development initiatives.

The Flyers biggest adversaries have been the New York Rangers, with an intense rivalry back to the 1970s. They have also waged against the New York Islanders in the 1970s and 1980s, the Boston Bruins in the 1970s and 2010s, the Washington Capitals, as well as the New Jersey Devils. In 89 seasons, the Eagles have been mediocre, to put it simply. In terms of all-time wins and losses, the team falls somewhere in the middle to bottom-half of the league. To their credit, of course, is the Super Bowl LII win in 2018 (2017 season). It was Philadelphia's first and so far only Super Bowl championship. Super Bowl LII was a memorable one. The Eagles were five-point underdogs to the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick New England Patriots dynasty. The Patriots won Super Bowls LI and LIII. Looking back, the Eagles ruined the Patriots' chances of threepeating (2017, 2018, 2019). Brady had just won his third regular season MVP award ahead of Super Bowl LII. Eagles backup QB, Nick Foles, ended up being the hero and MVP of Super Bowl LII. Carson Wentz started most of the Eagles' games that season. However, in Week 14, he tore an ACL and missed the rest of the season. Foles started the remaining three regular season games and all three postseason season games. He went 5-1 and led the team to the somewhat improbable championship. Foles was part of one of the top trick plays in NFL history, the Philly Special: https://youtu.be/YDG3_ewrOWg. Per NFL Films, it was "a play that the Eagles had never called before, run on fourth down by an undrafted rookie running back, pitching the football to a third-string tight end who had never attempted an NFL pass before, throwing to a backup quarterback who had never caught an NFL or college pass before, on the biggest stage for football." Eagles head coach Doug Pederson called the play. Pederson didn't stay in Philly long. Less than three years after winning the Super Bowl, he was fired after the Eagles went 4-11-1 (.281) in 2020. Pederson only coached the Eagles for five seasons (2016-2020). I know the Eagles best for the Andy Reid (1999-2012) and Donovan McNabb (1999-2010) years. In 14 seasons as head coach, Reid led the Eagles to nine postseason appearances including five NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance. Coincidentally, that Super Bowl appearance, Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005 (2004 season), was a loss to the Brady-Belichick Patriots. Reid did finally win a Super Bowl as a head coach in 2020 (2019 season) when he coached the Kansas City Chiefs to a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. My favorite team, the Atlanta Falcons, had a dual-threat QB rivalry going on in the early-to-mid 2000s. It was the Falcons' Mike Vick versus McNabb. An NFC rivalry, McNabb got the better of Vick in most of the head-to-head matchups. As a Falcons fan, the most painful loss in the rivalry was the 2005 NFC Championship Game (2004 season) in which the Eagles won at home, 27-10. A Falcons win would have had us in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1999 (1998 "Dirty Birds" season). I played the Falcons-Eagles rivalry a lot in Madden NFL 2004 on my PlayStation 2. Vick was on the cover of Madden that year. Funny enough, Vick joined McNabb as a backup on the Eagles in 2009. Vick started for the Eagles the following four seasons (2010-2013). He was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year for the 2010 season. I ran into McNabb in real life on a Sunday at the Masters. I think the year was 2016. From what I recall, he wore a shirt that had an advertisement on the back at the bottom.

I'm not sure whether to rate the Philadelphia 76ers three stars ("OK") or four stars ("Good") on…read moreYelp. I'll go with four because the Sixers have won three NBA championships (1955, 1967, 1983) and in recent decades, they've made the playoffs - and won - more often than not. The Sixers' three titles are tied for sixth-most among the NBA's 30 teams. The team is tied with the Detroit Pistons (1989, 1990, 2004) and the Miami Heat (2006, 2012, 2013). When I think of the Sixers, the first thing I think of is Allen Iverson and the 2001 NBA Finals. The Sixers drafted "the Answer" with the first overall pick in the 1996 draft. Iverson played 12 seasons as a Sixer and racked up many achievements. He was the NBA regular season MVP for the 2000-01 season. He also led the league in scoring four times: 1998-99, 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2004-05. Unfortunately, the Sixers lost, 4-1, to the Shaq-Kobe Los Angeles Lakers in the 2001 Finals. The Sixers had quite the team then, with Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo, Sixth Man of the Year Aaron McKie, and Eric Snow as Iverson's top supporting cast. Raja Bell came off the bench to defend Kobe. Georgia Tech alum Matt Geiger contributed off the bench as well. Larry Brown won NBA Coach of the Year that year (2001). I'm not old enough to remember the Sixers' heyday in the early 80s with Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, "Dr. J" Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, and Bobby Jones. That team swept, 4-0, a Lakers team that featured Kareem Adbul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, and was coached by Pat Riley. After the ABA-NBA merger prior to the 1976-77 season, Dr. J spent his entire NBA career in Philly (11 years). Dr. J's Sixers career overlapped with Charles Barkley's when the Sixers drafted "the Round Mound of Rebound" with the fifth overall pick in 1984. Dr. J retired after the 1986-87 season. Barkley was traded to the Phoenix Suns during the offseason in 1992. Post-Iverson, the Sixers have mostly been unmemorable. The team had two Rookies of the Year in a five-year span: Michael Carter-Williams in 2014 and Ben Simmons in 2018. The Sixers drafted Carter-Williams with the 11th overall pick in 2013 and Simmons with the first overall pick in 2016. Both players dealt with various injuries and didn't last long in Philly, with Carter-Williams being traded away in just his second season and Simmons in what should have been his fifth season. Simmons never played his true rookie season (2016-17) due to injury and he was a holdout during the 2021-22 season. Good luck to the Brooklyn Nets with Simmons. Joel Embiid, who was drafted by the Sixers with the third overall pick in 2014, is the best Sixers player of the last 10 years. However, even Embiid has been sidelined for many games due to various injuries. Now while Simmons missed what would have been his first season, Embiid missed what would have been his first *two* seasons (2014-15 and 2015-16). Embiid has yet to play more than 68 games in a single season. Despite that, he's earned numerous accolades including 2023 MVP (first Sixer to win the MVP award since Iverson in 2001), seven All-Star selections, and two scoring titles (2022, 2023). In terms of durability, I have to mention Andre Iguodala who was a very durable player for the Sixers. Iguodala was drafted by the Sixers with the ninth overall pick in 2004. He started all 82 games in five different seasons, including one season when he averaged almost 40 minutes per game. That sounds unheard of in today's NBA with "load management." They don't make players like they used to. Much respect to Iguodala in that regard. After being named an All-Star in his final season in Philly (2011-12), he went on to win four championships with the Golden State Warriors. He was an integral bench player for the Warriors. Finally, I have to give a shout-out to another Georgia Tech alum who played for the Sixers -- Thaddeus Young, who the Sixers drafted with the 12th overall pick in 2007. While he never developed into an All-Star, Thad had seven solid, productive seasons for the Sixers. His best NBA seasons arguably came in his last two years in Philly when he averaged highs in points (17.9), steals (2.1), and minutes (34.6) per game. Thad is one of only five players from the 2007 NBA Draft Class that is still playing in the NBA today: https://x.com/NBA/status/1795891978225279255

Even with tight security and metal detector screening to get in, entry into the draft was a smooth process. Once in, every activity had a line, but there was plenty to see and do without having to spend a dime. Download the app and register and you were automatically on the list for stand by tickets. Do a few of the activities and you found yourself in a raffle for cool prizes. Kid friendly - while not my focus the answer was a clear yes. Adult fun - again very entertaining. A positive spotlight on the city of Philadelphia and what we have to offer - absolutely.

Before I get started, I didn't actually attend the draft so I will mostly review how the Eagles drafted. The draft itself was amazing. People from all over the area came. Center City, North Philly, South Philly, West Philly and The Main Line and other suburbs. Even better people from all over the country came to root on their teams. Philly had all sorts of events at this draft including a zip line, an area to try on football gear, a field goal kicking and challenge and more! NFL Legends were also in attendance including Joe Glecko, Jim Taylor, Morten Anderson, Brian Dawkins, Drew Pearson (Boo) and Brian Westbrook. They also used the Franklin Institute as a draft center. The Eagles drafted amazing! First, they started off with Derek Barnett. A low-risk, high-reward player. At Tennessee, he was a sack machine! He even broke Reggie White's sack record. Compared to Myles Garret, Barnett has the better stat line. In the second round they acquired Sidney Jones. If he had not torn his Achilles he would be a first-round pick. He is expected to be back by October. I doubt he will re-injure his his Achillies as the surgeries now are pretty good. Also he never had a major injury in the past. Would not be surprised if he becomes a lockdown corner. Rasul Douglas was picked up in the third round. He would be a second-rounder if the cornerback class was not so stacked. The West Virginia system benefited him so it is hard to evaluate him. In the third and fourth rounds they got two receivers with Mike Wallace speed. They have potential. Would not be surprised if Matthews and/or Agholor are gone come next season. I like Nathan Gerry pickup. He was a Kurt Coleman style safety at Nebraska. I like how they are converting him to a Linebacker. He will be a possible Mychael Kendricks replacement. Finally, they got Elijah Qualls. He reminds me of a smaller Danny Shelton. He will be a good backup until Beau Allen is healthy. Great job Howie and Joe Douglas. In Joe Douglas We Trust!
