We have been going to Philip's Shoe Clinic for decades, not just for shoe soles and heels, but also for luggage and even briefcase repairs. It had been six years since my last visit, but I recently returned this past Tuesday. While I was on an overseas vacation, I was in a rush and accidentally caught part of a Ziploc bag in my purse's zipper. The more I tried to fix it, the worse it became. Eventually, I managed to get the zipper almost all the way open, but it remained stuck and would not close for the rest of the trip. Thankfully, the purse had two major compartments with separate zippers, so I was still able to use it. When I got back, I brought the purse to Philip's Shoe Clinic, unsure if it could even be repaired. Oscar came out from the back of the shop to greet me. He was so considerate and did not want to handle my purse with his hands dirty from work, so he did not fully assess the damage at first. Still, he gave me a very reasonable estimate of $14 and said it would be ready in two days. To my delight, the purse was ready on time, and the zipper worked perfectly. Even better, Oscar only charged me $10 instead of $14. I truly appreciated his honesty. We chatted a bit, and I learned that Oscar has been the owner of the shop for the past nine years, although he has worked there since the 1990s. When the previous owner retired, she asked Oscar to take over, and he has been running it ever since. That explains why the high quality of work has never changed. This was not the first time Oscar showed such generosity. On two separate occasions, he did not charge me at all. Once was for punching extra holes in the strap of a crossbody bag so I could shorten it. Another time, about six years ago, a family member got some fabric caught in the zipper of a short jacket and had to take it off like a pullover. Oscar was able to fix it right away while I waited. Oscar is not only skilled but also kind and helpful. I feel so fortunate to have Philip's Shoe Clinic in our neighborhood. I highly recommend it. read more

Three stars due to lack of communication. I had brought in 2 items to be repaired at separate times. Both items weren't ready when promised and no call or follow up was made. He doesn't answer the phone or have a voicemail to leave a message. I actually had to go in multiple times to find my work wasn't done. And no call was made when it was ready. One item was never completed. I took it home after it sat in his store for 3 weeks Untouched. Why ask for a phone number if you're not going to use it? read more

I've used Philip to repair several things. Purses, shoes, and luggage. He even added a zipper to a pair of boots and it looks like they were made that way. Prices are very reasonable for what he does. Turn around time has normally been a week or less. He also has some really good water proofing spray that he sells. Parking is easy in a strip mall. Unfortunately my repair shop I have been using for years shut down operation during Covid 19 and never reopened:( I was literally dreading to go to this repair store and unfortunately, all my fears came true. My TODS needed to be repaired and I was reassured by a Mexican guy that he will do an amazing for job for me. When I came to pick up my shoes, they were destroyed by him! He literally destroyed my $500 shoes! After he was paid, I asked him if there is a chance he can fix it little bit better because it looked terrible. He ripped my shoes from my hands, started to scream at me in Spanish and instructed me to come back on Saturday, because he will remove everything what he did on my shoes. Oscar did a terrible job cleaning my gym shoes and had the audacity to charge me $20! I wouldn't mind the charges but they were still dirty, dusty and still had a small rock imbedded in the sole. I have some high end shoes (my one addiction) and Philips has helped to protect and repairs both heels and soles. I had a boot with a split zipper and brought it here for repair. When I came back to pick it up, I was charged $16.00 and told it was fixed. The next time I wore them, the same thing happened and I took them back again. After a few days I was told they were repaired again although I saw no visible signs anything was replaced. If I could give it to this place zero stars I would. I brought a pair of a expensive gym shoes in to have new soles put on. I was told a week, and when I came to pick them up, they still weren't ready. Not a huge deal, I came back two days later. Upon inspection I saw that the soles were replaced, which is what I had asked for, but I also saw that my distressed shoes, which came that way, were "cleaned up". I asked the guy what he did to my shoes and he said he conditioned them. No one asked him to do that, I guess maybe he was just trying to be nice but in the process he ruined a pair of $600 gym shoes. They are supposed to look scuffed and distressed. To top it off he repeatedly argued with me telling me he did not do anything when it was very apparent that he did. At least, admit you made a mistake, I would still have been very unhappy, but take ownership of it. Clearly this shop does not know what any higher end merchandise is supposed to look like. I am so embarassed I won't even wear them anymore because they now look fake. read more

I have a pair of SAS shoes that I really like, but unfortunately the heels were getting worn down and the backs were salt stained from winter driving. I was going to get rid of them but the folks at Philip's Shoe Clinic said they could repair them for a reasonable price in comparison to buying a new pair. I brought them in and they installed new Vibram soles. They also were able to completely remove the salt stains and recondition the leather so the shoes look like new. I took some boots in for a new heel covering. $38 - pricey but I loved the boots. The rest of the boot was fine. I picked them up and the inside lining is falling apart. When I pointed it out the person said they didn't touch that. I replied so you didn't put the boot on any stand to repair them? Oh no. Sure they held them in their hands for the new heel cover and requires new heel cap. $38 later and my boots look just as bad. I would not have had them repaired if they were Gallo apart elsewhere. Took just under two weeks because he had to order the right size cork bed and covid slowed shipping (which I was fine with). I've been going to Phil's for over thirty years. I grew up in Northbrook, so this is the only place I've ever gone for repairs. I don't need them often, but when I do, they're very helpful. No, the original owner is no longer there, and I don't live in the area anymore, but I will still drive to them when I need them because the current owner and staff have always been helpful and friendly. The last time I used them was to repair two purses (each brought in at separate times). One I'd bought in Ireland where I'd TRIED to bring the purse back to the place I bought it and they gave it to their repair person who returned it not repaired and claimed it couldn't be repaired. Really? That's funny since when I brought it in to Phil's, not only could they repair the purse, but they were also able to move the straps from the awkward placement the designer put them to a more logical placement, thereby allowing the purse an extended life. It wasn't cheap (about half of what I paid for the purse originally, and to purse people they would consider my purse cheap as I refuse to spend a lot for something which is supposed to hold my wallet and my keys), however, considering it was my favorite purse and I wasn't ready to let it go at the time, Phil's came through for me and made the purse usable again. Can Philip's Shoe Clinic clean shoes? Maybe. Does PSC need to polish up their business ettiquette? YES. When I brought my shoes in to be polished, the owner told me that I needed a few other things to make the shoe "like new". I thanked him for his advice, but explained that I would have to come back for the other services and instead just wanted the cleaning for that day. They always find a way to make my shoes look new again to which I am eternally grateful because who really wants to say goodbye to their favorite pairs of shoes? I know I don't! I am posting a 1 because of drastic price increases without any explanation for significant cost increases. Over past 4 months I have taken three brand new pairs of boots to have rubber soles and heels affixed to new leather bottom soled boots for added cushion and traction. I knew their work was expensive but they did a good job on the first two pairs, albeit at a premium price. Today's price for the same work done four months ago was more than 30% higher. No explanation offered. I Googled and found another cobbler (Tony's in Glenview) and they were charging far less for same work that I had done at Philip's and a coworker in Glenview swears by Tony's and has been a loyal customer there for years. My mistake in assuming Phillip's wants longterm customer loyalty. I am fine with paying for good work, but not being price gouged. read more

Went to pick up my fiance's boots that needed the heel repaired. When I picked them up, I dealt with the owner (presuming Phillip). The total was $28.90. When I presented him with a 20% coupon, he took off less than $3.00. Also, when asking if there is any warranty on the work, he said "no". The heel broke the next day and when I saw what was done to repair the heel, I and my fiance were not terribly happy at the screws used to repair the heel. Not impressed. I went in on Thursday and spoke to a very friendly associate who explained to me the prices (which seemed high). I thought about it for a day and came back on Friday to move forward. This time I believe I spoke to the owner who was very rude. He told me that the job would cost more than the day prior but that he would honor it since the associate yesterday gave me the discounted price. He also told me he could not completed within my requested timeframe which is understandable as I needed a one day turnaround. However, it was the way I was treated that turned me off. As soon as I mentioned my deadline, he put the shoes I brought back in my bag suggesting that I should leave. He didn't even ask me if I wanted to wait a little longer for the shoes.
