We thought local, top-level boot fitters were a thing of the past when Newport Ski Company closed decades ago. However, we found Phil's provides mountain resort boot-fitting--but in OC! Our college-age daughter needed boots and was offered several models after answering many questions about her ability and preferred terrain as well as having her foot size and arch checked. We were impressed they had such a wide selection available. While they offer custom footbeds, we opted for a pair of Sidas insoles (highly recommend!) to increase her comfort and edge control. I appreciate the willingness of our very knowledgeable salesman, Aaron, in answering all our questions during our time there. We never experienced any attitude or pressure. So far, she has seven full days in the boots (5 in Mammoth, 2 in Tahoe) skiing blue-black and black runs and never thinks about the boots, ever! That's a wonderful boot fit!! If you're looking for new gear: boards boots helmets skis goggles, anything they have a great selection; its 2 small shops and the walls are stacked better than most big sports stores! The other door handles rentals, etc. and I rec. calling for specific brands or SO's, or for lead times on waxing/edge repair. 2017: When I needed a new board, the salesman asked thoughtful Q's and he listened to my A's and experiences with other boards. They set me up with the Niche Aether board and Arbor Cypress bindings; I got the board waxed for cold temp wax prior to my Montana trip and it was a rocket, best board feel on powder. And I always visit Phil's for warm temp waxes for Big Bear, Mt High, etc. Renting Equipment? In peak CA snow season I recommend you don't show up on a Thurs looking to outfit yourself or others with ski/board/boot rentals for Fri/Sat morning. It gets very busy here with lines; but I'll say even as a smaller shop they get my board waxed and prepped better and quicker than the nearby competitors at good prices. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I would give 10 stars if I could. 110 percent worth the trek down from Los Angeles this past weekend for the warm and knowledgable service Aaron and Nathan provided alone, but I can go on. The new buildout is top notch (I had to remark on it, and was told they just updated everything - it looks great!), from Rentals to Retail, and their selection of new gear from only the best brands is a sight to behold. Truly. I came down for a wax and tune to get my skis dialed in for the upcoming season, yet what truly blew me away was the STELLAR assistance that Aaron and Nathan provided. They spent over 2 HOURS patiently helping me dial in a boot fit on my current boots. That's right, Phil's has a CERTIFIED BOOT FITTER in Aaron - I had no idea, but when they mentioned it, I ran and grabbed my boots quicker than a New York minute. I was blown away to learn this, as most shops do not have professionals of this caliber on the team. The most I had experienced before was a simple heat-to-mold liner oven (I'll skip it, thanks); Phil's has the real deal boot fitter on site, ready to ACTUALLY FIT SKI BOOTS the right way with punches, presses, grinders, and more - not to mention the years of training, certification, and experience to match. What's more, Aaron and Nathan went out of their way to pull down a dozen new boots of varying shell constructions and flex patterns to try on - yet they didn't try to sell me on anything. They just said over and over, "we just want people to be happy with their gear, whether they buy it from us or not, and understand what else is out there and what might be right for you." I can't tell you how refreshing this was, as at every other shop I've been to, they don't really seem to care about getting you into gear you need (let alone so gleefully take the time to show you what's new and exciting out there), and are only ever concerned with selling you something. Suffice it to say, though, I will be going back when my boots give up the ghost. After spending an unexpected 2+ hours helping me out with a boot fit, answering my questions, and letting me try on a host of new boots, they have a customer for life, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Phil's Ski and Snowboard has my full support. I have been to my fair share of shops across the West and Mountain West, and Phil's is truly the best, hands down, let alone a godsend for skiers and snowboarders in the area - Phil's just can't be beat in the greater Southern California region, and probably the country at large! read more

I know nothing of anything related to skiing or snowboarding. I do know great customer service...and this place has it. My kid rented a snowboard. First time for her. Went to Big Bear and called us midway through the day to say the board was stolen. Told her that sucks and not to freak out, not her fault. Called Phil's the next day, they were beyond cool about it. Charged us what they had to, but could have really stuck it to us...and they didn't. Manager Parker even said to follow up if somehow the board was found. Cool. Guess what? Board was found. Apparently this happens a lot...someone grabbed the wrong board. They got home, tried to turn in the wrong rental to their rental place, called Big Bear, who then followed up with us. Even cooler...Parker happened to be up there later that week...and brought it back...no need to drive up there...and at no extra cost to us!!! Great customer care, great attitude, really cool manager in Parker. Highly recommended...though I'm a golfer.‍ read more

Our little guy just turned 4 and we decided this is the year we teach him to ski. So close friends of ours recommend Phil's for a ski lease. I had never heard of this before but what a deal! For a very reasonable price we were able to get little boots and skis that we will keep all season. Like we don't return them until June! Everyone that helped us here were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They even told us about the edgie wedgy which is a little tool that attaches to the front of a newbie's skis to make the pizza/french fry transition fairly controllable. Phil's also took care of attaching our bindings and getting our skis waxed. The intake process was super easy and we were able to pick them up within a couple days. I would highly recommend Phil's and we will be back for all of our skiing needs! read more

We ended up paying way less than renting at the place in mammoth and we didn't have to stand forever in line either. If you need to rent any kind of snow equipment, look no further. I appreciate the knowledge all the staff appeared to possess. The place was bustling with customers, each who needed extensive assistance, but the guys handled everyone/the masses like a pro. Left a new board for set up and hot wax. Picked it up in a hurry and didn't notice they set it up for Goofy foot instead of normal. They wanted me to drive back an hour out of the way for them to switch it. 10 screws is not worth 2 hours to drive there and back.. Save you money and set the board up yourself. Hot wax was fine.
