Corning PD kindly had my car towed from in front of my home at 4:15 PM on a Friday by Phils because the registration had expired one month earlier. My fault I let the registration expire but I was not putting another dime into the car because of all the issues it had and was planning to sell it to Cash for Clunkers but time got away from me and we hadn't pulled it into my driveway which apparently would've saved me from this whole mess.Total money grab by the city and Phils because there was no way I would be able to get my car back before they closed at 5 PM for the weekend so my car had to sit there. I finally called and by that time I was told the fees were $900 BUT Earl would cut me a deal and only make me pay $500 if I signed the title of my car over. If I didn't do this the total fee's would be around $3000 by the time my car went to auction and he was likely to only make $1000 off the car and therefore would take out a deficiency lien against me for the rest of the money. I tried to negotiate the $500 since I was willing to sign my car over to him to sell at auction and the tow from my house to his storage is less than 0.25 miles so he would still be profiting but he refused and then had the audacity to shake my hand and tell me merry Christmas after making me pay $500 and leaving with nothing. I understand people have to run a business, but this was a huge scam and Phils is apparently notorious for this type of business from what another tow yard here in Corning told me when I called to see is this is standard in the business. Driver took 4 hours to get to me, wouldn't AAA tow me because my registration sticker was not on the vehicle despite having a valid and active registration card. This is the worst company ever. My vehicle was more than 25 feet off the road and after waiting for an hour and a half the refused to pull it back because AAA didn't cover it. The driver was very rude and offered no alternative choices. I would of paid cash to get it towed but the boss left without offering me a solution. Very rude driver. This place doesn't even deserve one star. My car broke down on the side of the road when it was 112 degrees outside while I was just passing through. I found an auto center that was familiar with my vehicle so I had it towed there no problem from this company. Come to find out this auto center couldn't do much as they didn't specialize in Land Rover. I called AAA had them schedule a tow to the nearest Land Rover dealer. Everything was great until The tow truck driver showed up and said no way I can't tow your vehicle to Marin. My husbands AAA Premier card is in his name and so is the car being towed. I had a copy of his ID and the card etc! He said because my husband wasn't present he couldn't tow it. I get having policies but you towed me once a few hours ago and now you're saying you can't tow me? We had a toddler traveling with us so my husband went on to San Fran which was our destination. He couldn't just sit around for hours waiting in the heat. I had no idea that this would cause so many issues. The tow truck driver left me in a parking lot in 100 degree weather, in an unfamiliar town with no working vehicle! Thanks a lot fuckers! You are what's wrong with the world today. Causes a back up of cars, as he would not move over. When clear myself and several other cars passed on the right, and the driver started honking and flipping us off. My vehicle was taken without permission on Saturday. It was subsequently impounded by TCSO, towed and stored by Phil's Towing. Located at 714 2nd St. Corning, CA 96021. When I contacted the company on Saturday, I was told it would be $500+ to retrieve my vehicle as it was a weekend. However, after calculating the charges it was actually cheaper to wait until Monday. I went to retrieve my vehicle this morning. Charges $533. After standing at the"Service" window for 10 minutes, an elderly lady (the owner's wife Rozetta Peterson) finally acknowledged my presence and stated that (the owner's son, Mark Peterson) would be with me shortly. It should be noted that when I arrived, employee/son was sitting at the desk doing nothing, but then shortly received a phone call. When I asked the owner's son, why they were almost $200 more than any other tow company. He stated, very rudely, "Can't you read? The charges are on the wall. " I admitted that "yes, I can read. I'm asking you to explain why you are charging more than the other local towing companies." Response: "Well, if you can read then read the wall!" I loudly informed them, "that the wall did not explain their justification for being close to $200 more than anywhere else!" They then refused to release my vehicle. There was no hold from the TCSO and I had cash in hand. They refused to accept payment. I was then told to leave and they refused to release my vehicle. I took my keys, attempted to leave the building. They attempted to take the keys from me, but I refused. By law, CA Vehicle code 22651, I have a right to retrieve my property as long as I present a valid ID, which they had. As they were refusing payment and refusing to release my property, I felt justified confiscating the keys. I was subsequently locked in the facility by the son. They also refused to allow my companion to leave the building. I attempted to leave through an office and narrowly escaped being locked in the room. The owner's wife then assaulted me. My friend thankfully had dialed 911. The owner's wife stated they had video survelliance and I would be arrested for going into a "Private" office. By this time you can imagine that voices are raised. I informed her that I was more than happy to have the officers arrive, as "you assaulted me, have unlawfully imprisoned me and are illegally withholding my property." She then had the audacity to state that I had assaulted her. I reminded her that she had "video surveillance", let's pull the tape. She then went into the office, I can only presume to destroy evidence and quickly returned, stating it was their word against ours. I asked her if she stopped the recording or deleted the tape? She denied these actions. Officers arrived, my companion and I were allowed to wait outside while officers spoke with the Owner's. The officer then retrieved the money for the fees from me and had my vehicle released to me. I stated to the officers I wanted to press charges. I was told I could do that, but it was mine and my companion's word against theirs. I explained that the owner's wife stated they had video surveillance and I wanted the tape pulled. The officer stated he would "try" to get the tape. Then suggested I'd have better results reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I again, reiterated that i wanted to press charges for assault and unlawful imprisonment and theft. I attempted to file a complaint with the BBB, but since it involves a criminal act I was redirected to local law enforcement. I have been a law abiding citizen of this town for 27 years, a home owner and propery tax payer for 10 years. I've never even had a traffic violation. To be treated so dispicablly, as if I were a criminal, as if I should be grateful, bow down and lick their boots, when it was my vehicle that was stolen, my property seized by the TCSO and to be charged so outrageously to retrieve my property is atrocious. I understand they have been businesses owners in this community for decades, but this behavior cannot and should not be ignored. It is unlawful, unethical and immoral. read more

Used this tow company several times because they are the only ones in town that were nearby to tow. They have one very cranky and moody driver who keeps pushing the AAA membership on me everytime he comes and charging more and more money for the same tow and same distance to the auto repair shop from home. They are super worried all the time about being sued and keep talking about it. Don't want people looking at the cars they have for sale on there tow lot. Just an over all paranoid unfriendly bunch of guys. The rookies are the only halfway normal ones because they haven't been there long enough to get broke in. read more

I broke down in Corning on my way home from Redding to San Jose. I have AAA Premier so I was able to be towed 200 miles. Mark was our driver and put my car on a flatbed. Due to a previous commitment he was only able to tow us to Winters where he made arrangements for another driver to take over for the rest of the way to San Jose, Mark was extremely helpful and thoughtful. He made an unpleasant situation much easier and seemed genuinely concerned about our welfare. read more

Wow. What a rip off!!! Extremely rude and disrespectfull, no way would i recommend them or their services to anyone. My car was towed while a sibling was driving because of a minor traffic infraction on a tuesday morning and when i got home from working out of town on a friday evening and went to get my car out of impound Saturday morn but their yard is closed on weekends so i was forced to pay the 40 bucks extra for the days that they are closed. They also would not allow me to pay over the phone on tuesday and have a family member get tge car gor me. Their excuse was that they can only releas the car to the person on the paperwork. So i was charged $515.00 for a 1 mile tow and 6 day lot fee. What a joke. These guys are horrible! read more
