One word YUM! I would spend all my money here if I lived nearby. Great spot for a delicious yet quick breakfast or lunch. We stopped in for coffee/breakfast on Sunday morning and were not disappointed. The staff is very friendly and was patient while we decided which of the delicious sandwiches to try. I ordered the prosciutto on multigrain and my bf got the smoked salmon on a croissant. We also shared a chocolate croissant (couldn't help ourselves it looked too good) I also had a latte and him the hot chocolate . The small latte was HUGE and the sandwiches were delicious! So lucky to have this amazing coffee shop right in Kennett Square. The Dick Tracy mocha is excellent...just the right amount of sweetness. I also am a big fan of their cappuccinos because they don't overdo it on the milk. I love their cold brew in the summer. They use Ceremony coffee beans and they are great, so I highly recommend that you buy yourself a bag of beans. Their pastry selection could be expanded, that's my one gripe. I've enjoyed the pastries I've had from there though. Please make more smoked salmon breakfast sandwiches! They always sell out by the time I get there, and that's like at 8am only an hour after they've opened. I love Philter! Has a city shop feel, without being pretentious. The staff are always welcoming and chipper which brings me back weekly. I've only ever stopped in for a mid afternoon pick me up until one day I was craving breakfast. Commence the drool...the Spicy Egg bagel is solidly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Fresh jalapeño, cheddar, with Pickled daikon & carrot slaw. It comes with a delicious sriracha aioli. Omg, it's so good. The pickled veggies are absolutely delicious. Everything a coffee shop should be! From the handwritten chalkboard menu to the traditional style coffee serving I was very impressed. I was visiting my mom for thanksgiving and needed my caffeine fix while now as out running some errands, so naturally I took to yelp in helping me find a place in an unfamiliar location time. Philter was the pick based off of location and reviews, it's located in the quaint kennet square area where the street is lined with cute shops. Since I had some extra time and we found a great parking spot on the street we stopped in to sit down for a cup of coffee. Btw I felt like I was going back in time with those parking meters outside that accept nickels and dimes hahaha how great to get an hour for like ten cents (not accurate but close). The service was great and very knowledgable. When I ordered my macchiato the girl made sure to inform me that it's was going to be the traditional style macchiato (because I'm sure people have ordered it expecting a huge Starbucks sugar rush in a cup) and although that's what I knew what I was ordering it was good that she provided that information. The coffee was great and the sandwich I ordered was even better! It was a simple egg sandwich but the relish and the sriracha gave it such a good flavor !!! I wish I could have one everyday for breakfast, but for now this picture will have to do until I can return! They are open till 6 so it's a good place for day time studying. Walking towards Philter the first thing you notice is an eye-catching patinated bronze and wrought-iron sculpture above a colorful and vibrant planter box. This gorgeous example of metalwork was created by a local craftsmanship and is, pun intended, a sign of good things to come. I ordered their single-origin espresso, a Papua New Guinea Kunjin from Ceremony Coffee Roasters, grabbed their copy of Drift (Volume 3: Havana) and took a seat by the window. Below I found a beautiful little garden with a tiny string of LED lights snaking through leaves and stems. It reminded me of the 'desert' wing at Longwood Gardens and I found myself slip into a pleasant daydream until my espresso was brought over by a smiling barista. The espresso was fruit forward, mildly acidic, a complex body, slightly tangy finish with notes of caramel, blackberry and nutmeg. After finishing the accompanying sparking water I went to thank the person who crafted my beverage and was introduced to Chris, the owner. That began a wonderfully engaging conversation about the genesis of Philter, his passion for coffee and a recounting of the half-a-year build-out. Among the many nuanced decorating decisions, Chris explained that the front counter used to be the woodworking bench of a nonagenarian carpenter. The piece was purchased at an estate auction, cleaned up but with all the character intact; it even includes the original castors. It is a subtle homage to the life's work of an artisan who spent the better part of a century crafting and repairing goods for innumerable families. The interior is simply stunning; a harmonious combination of reclaimed materials, plants and whimsical accents. Hand pounded zinc counter-tops, copper light fixtures, hardwood floors, tables and shelving create an elegant rustic charm. Regional prints and original works adorn the walls, a small retail section interspersed with succulents and a reference library of coffee related publications all speak to the aesthetic and cohesive vision wonderfully orchestrated by Chris and his team. I visited again a few days later as I made my way back to Baltimore and enjoyed another stellar experience. Final Verdict: Philter serves the best coffee between Baltimore and Philadelphia. More than that, it tells a story. The narrative speaks of passion, dedication and the three-year anniversary of business that was ten years in the making; evocative of the past with plan for the future. Absolutely delicious coffee and great tea! Was pleasantly surprised by their array of gluten-free and vegan pastries. Very welcoming atmosphere. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and cozy, as well as the staff. The coffee has a good, rather neutral flavor; it isn't bitter or citrusy. I ordered a long black, which resembles an espresso lungo, and it was delicious. I'm not usually one to drink black coffee, but it really hit the spot. The only issue I had was that there was only one man working and had a lot of orders to make, on top of managing the register. He managed to get them out pretty fast, but it also wasn't super busy. Philter is such an adorable coffee shop. First of all, it has a prime location in downtown Kennett Square. It has large windows, so you can sit and sip your coffee while watching the bustling little town. There is also some outside seating for the warmer months. I stopped in a few days ago with an out-of-town friend for a cup of tea. I got the Evening in Missoula, which was phenomenal. It was really unique. Most coffee shops have a standard tea list with all the usual suspects, so I was really pleased to find something unique. And the presentation was on point! read more

Cold-brew worth going out of your way for. Coffee in general here is great but the cold-brew is a game-changer. So different than everyone else's version. Mellow and delicious. Only bugaboo with this place is parking that isn't plentiful (on-street) and requires coins. A problem if you, like me, rarely carry cash anymore. **Update. Apparently the cold-brew is frequently unavailable (two out of two days this week they had none). Two other gripes: AC not particularly strong as I was hot during my stay, and the wifi is pretty slow. A speedtest.net test clocked in at about 5 Mb/s. When you have multiple users on it, page-loads are slow. I'm not expecting to stream HD movies, btw. read more

My second visit here netted good results. I had a mocha latte which took some time to create but after watching some of the artistry at work here I understand why things take a little time here. It's sort of the only game in town for coffee and they seem to have a good following as both times I've been here it's impossible to get a seat. Last time I was here I had a breakfast sandwich which was tasty and well made. I had a feta and thyme muffin which was ok. I wouldn't say it was my favorite. Matter of taste I'm sure. Really enjoyed stumbling into Philter two weekends ago with my husband after an impromptu Longwood Gardens adventure. My husband had a grain bowl for lunch and I had the mushroom soup. Lovely food for such a tiny cafe. Not to mention exceptional coffee and beautifully pulled shots. Unfortunately can't get them pulled like that around where we live...! Delicious coffee and lunch options! My husband and I stopped in here for a quick bite with our 4 month old and were pleasantly surprised by the great breakfast and lunch menu. I had the curried chicken salad which was super yummy and likely the best chicken salad I've ever had! Beyond that the bread tasted freshly baked! The service was warm and friendly and when I asked for a hot mug of water to heat our babies bottle they were incredibly accommodating. The space is really cute and they have several tables for 2 and a few for 4 plus. The coffee was delicious as well and they also had several fresh juices, smoothies, and pastries on site. Update to previous review: Philter is one of our favorite coffee shops in the area. The people are always welcoming and the atmosphere is cozy. Lately, though, the cappuccinos/lattes we've been ordering have been warm and not hot. :( This has been the case the last 10 times we've visited, but I don't think it had always been that way. We like to relax and read a book while sipping out coffee, but it's hard to enjoy if we don't drink super fast because the coffee turns lukewarm then cold pretty quickly. I know coffee/espresso needs to be a certain temperature when brewing, but I hope Philter might consider cranking the heat up just a little bit :). I really do love Philter, but I also love hot coffee! :-/ read more

Great coffee spot in the curious town of Kennet Square. With a a nice selection of pastries, cookies muffins and other snacks that range from made in house to brought in from a local bakery. Also they have a good size menu from breakfast to lunch that fills various appetites and range in value and size. Went with a breakfast sandwich on sourdough. Probably would have done the bagel if I were to get it a gun but the sourdough was tasty and definitely held up well to the egg and ham added in. Greatly appreciated the care in coffee although I would have preferred to be able to get a single extra shot in place of a double the taste was spot on and they offer both a mocha and artisan chocolate option if your looking for something sweet. First time I tried oat-milk as well which was different but good. Worth a stop if your in the are. read more

VERY SLOW....I walked in as a patron was wrapping up his order and two young ladies were sitting at a table...only three people in the coffee shop. I order an espresso and pay. 9 minutes later the barista finished a coffee drink and called out caramel latte. One of the young ladies came to pickup her order.  She probably waited 15+ minutes...again, no one else in this place.  Now, I have to wait for the person who ordered ahead of me and before I get my order.  14 minutes after paying, my espresso is serviced and 4 minutes later, my cappuccino is ready for pickup. Now, to the coffee...the espresso was good except it was not hot.  The shot was pulled into a shot glass then transferred to an espresso cup...both cups were probably cold which cooled the espresso. First off, Kennett Square (where?!) is a little hidden gem - and by little I mean 2x2 blocks. It's a weird blend of small-town-in-boonies and hipster, and it works. Philter is a down-to-earth coffee shop in the middle of the main road. Spacious interior and very friendly staff. Along with the aroma of pastries that fill the shop, you can smell the Ceremony beans in all their glory as you enter. Can't go wrong with the lattes, and I suggest sipping it in the small seating area outside for some good people-watching. read more
