Our first time here was just yesterday after visiting Winterthur, and what a delightful surprise! Some friends and I stopped in unexpectedly for a late lunch, and it did not disappoint. Two of us had the mushroom quiche, which was outstanding -- a perfect balance of egg and cream, with delicious, hearty mushrooms. The Chardonnay was wonderful, and judging by the wine case, they seem to have a thoughtfully curated selection from France. My partner arrived a bit later and ended up bringing home what may have been the best pizza either one of us has ever had. As if that weren't enough, we were back in the area again today and had our third straight meal here. I had the turkey baguette sandwich and, yes, another glass of the same delicious Chardonnay. My partner had the deviled eggs and a fresh mozzarella, tomato, and pesto sandwich. Everything was excellent, and we're so glad we found this place! read more

Okay place to get food in the area. It's located in someone's house which surprised me. I got the Lyon, good proportion of protein to veggies, broccoli salad was good too. However, it is just a sandwich, nothing that memorable. Food took a bit longer for a cafe and a bit pricier than I would want to be spending for breakfast, but the portions are big enough for lunch. I went to the Centerville Cafe for High tea with two other people. The first issue was that a fourth was supposed to attend and couldn't make it, yet we were charged full price for their absence. This on itself own does not deserve a one star, but it when one considers it in conjunction with the following other failures, I believe you will agree with the rating. First, they didn't offer any options for the first dish. They served a mushroom soup for that dish, which I don't happen to like (like many people I'm not fond of mushrooms.) Rather than offering me another option, they gave me nothing. Second, there were only about 5 tea choices and they were in bags, not loose leaf. Third, the tea was served lukewarm and even after steeping for a good amount of time, my Darjeeling, which should be dark, almost black, was so pale, it looked like slightly tinted water (see photo.) my companions experienced the same issue, so we asked for a second tea bag to give the tea a bit more flavor and still, the lukewarm tea was exactly the same pale water. Fourth, the sandwich's were bland, edible, but no real flavor. Fifth, the scones were cold and small. Sixth, like other reviewers commented, the small room we were in was cramped, as the tables and chairs were too large for the room. We had to move the table to get everyone in and out. Finally, as was said by others, the waitresses seemed frazzled and stressed, which made me feel frazzled and stressed. Overall: I can't speak to the restaurant's take out store, but I would not recommend the High Tea to anyone. I've been to many a High Teas and this fell flat in almost every way. Three of us had the Afternoon Tea service on a very snowy Saturday. Nothing went well. The chilly, drafty first floor room where we were seated was only tolerable. We picked out our tea choice from a very small selection found on the table. The tea arrived in individual tea pots lukewarm water. None of the teas had any color including the black tea. The food arrived cold including the scones! It was obvious the food had been kept in the refrigerator for some length of time. We asked for additional tea bags to give some flavor which they amicably agreed to do. But, the new hot tea was not hot. So for all this discontent we paid an outrageous $50 per person. The three of us go to afternoon teas around the tri state area for fun. We will not be going back to Centreville Cafe. read more

We heard about Centreville Cafe and were so excited to try what looked like such a cute place. We love supporting small businesses! We placed our order via Toast, which was featured on the website, and when we arrived, they claimed they never got the order. The food not being ready wasn't a big deal (I understand systems go down!)--but the way they handled it was very disappointing. When I showed them the confirmation, rather than apologizing for their system being down, they were patronizing and defensive, trying to prove that it was my fault and not theirs--definitely not in the spirit of a small, community-oriented cafe and market. I wanted to love it but their response tainted our experience quite significantly. It was an experience that exceeded any expectations that we had. Everything about our high tea was special and memorable. The vision that Elizabeth has for the Centreville Cafe includes extraordinary food and hospitality and also a sense of being welcomed and valued. Every element of our tea was delicious - the sandwiches, scones, homemade desserts and the tea itself. The setting is beautiful - an old historic house - and each room has been lovingly restored with unique furniture. The Centreville Cafe is a place to create special, long lasting memories. I have had coffee here before but I needed some lunch for my husband and myself. The parking is tough but I was glad I took a chance. I ordered a chicken salad and a grilled chicken with Brie and Dijon. They were both tasty but the chicken salad had alot more salad on it. The chicken and Brie could have had more of both. We stopped for lunch while sightseeing nearby. The kitchen staff easily accommodated our gluten and lactose intolerances. We had the chicken salad sandwich on gluten free bread, a turkey sandwich on a baguette, and a gluten free raspberry bar - delicious! Portion sizes are good and potato chips accompany sandwiches. I have lived in the neighborhood of this establishment since the 1970s, while it is famous for its cheddar spread--famously known as Jane's. There used to be the Troll of Scandinavia, which stood at the back of Centreville, and later Susan owned the cafe--while Jane's spread went all over two counties so it is made by the Back Burner and the Country Butcher. Today, I stopped by, thinking, thoughtlessly, that, of course, I could trust this old reliable, which has been with me for more than forty years. What the Centreville Cafe served up tastes like dog food, and that's me talking about the dish enjoyed and loved fpr decades by everyone all over Chester County and Newcastle County. No one has ever disgraced Jane's, but now it has happened in Centreville, Delaware, where the famous spread was founded in the colonial village. When I tried to call them through their website, no one picked up, and there was no answering service, and no chance to record a comment. And when I tried to send them an email, their website gave me a false address, which also does not return messages. Don't ever go to this disgrace--because you would do better at McDonald's. read more

Do NOT book the Afternoon Tea Experience. I've been to Centreville Cafe a couple of times and enjoyed my experience. When I found out the cafe offered an "Afternoon Tea" experience, I was excited to book to celebrate my sister's going away party. The tea and food were good, and we were enjoying the experience for about an hour. That is, until the owner Elizabeth, who was also the server, dropped the check to the guest of honor (who she knew was the guest of honor since she sat at the head of the table and Elizabeth knew I was the one that organized the event). Additionally, the check was dropped while several other guests and I were still eating/enjoying the tea, making us feel like we needed to rush to finish and that we were no longer welcome. Once my mother paid for the bill, Elizabeth distastefully brought up that she could only accept cash tip, which I was well aware of and prepared my mother for before the outing. Elizabeth also cleared plates while others were eating in an attempt to get us to leave; again, we had been there for an hour when the experience was portrayed to be available for two. Elizabeth wanted us to move our plates and cups to the upstairs room to continue, but I was so displeased with Elizabeth's manners that I decided to have the group leave. Needless to say, I would not recommend the Afternoon Tea at Centreville Cafe, and I will not be visiting in the future. Stopped here on the way to Longwood Gardens. I love places like this---small town, quaint eateries with pleasant staff and homey furnishings. My wife and I shared a chicken sandwich and it was delicious. We sat inside and admired the many local pictures and artwork adorning the walls. Right after we were seated, the place started to really fill up, and people were going outside to eat. I recommend going there before the lunch hour rush. Had lunch down the road a while back and afterwards, took a stroll about town and wandered into this spot. Loved everything about this charming French-themed place but had just eaten so what to do but return! And now I love even more that I've enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and delicious food. First up, order at the counter from a selection of delights listed on a black board, many of which are displayed in refrigerated cases. I had the mushroom quiche that was fabulous: a large, melt-in-your-mouth wedge of fluffy eggs, cream, cheese, and of course, mushrooms that was served with a side salad. My husband ordered a chicken salad croissant sandwich with chips and we each chose to have a glass of chardonnay but were convinced to order a bottle when told it would be the same price as two glasses and we could take with us whatever we didn't drink. Next, there is table service. So while we ordered at the counter, our food was delivered to us in a romantic sitting room of this old house. But the wine! What we ordered was not stocked in a bottle so the proprietor offered us a better wine at the same price and it was delicious. Finally, there are shelves and refrigerated cases of take out goodness, including a unique salad dressing and local made Bloody Mary mix that went home with us. read more

Great ambiance, we had reserved an upstairs room for my book club. It looked like a well decorated dining room in someone's home. There was only the one table making it perfect for our purpose. The sandwiches and drinks were all very good and even though they normally do not take orders at the table (it is typically ordered at the counter), a really wonderful staff member took our orders and delivered our food. The staff works very hard and is kind but very frazzled, yet owner is pushy and rude. Converted house with large, bulky tables and chairs that are not practical and difficult to get around in such a cramped space. The tablecloths drag onto the ground so whenever you move, your feet are getting tangled or tugging at the cloth. The owner is quite opinionated about the food and not a friendly type. What she considers "scones" are actually tiny bread biscuits that are cut into half-dollar sized rounds. How this passes for a scone is a mystery. The coffee station had no cups, I had to track down a server who finally brought them to us- had to do same with juice glasses and napkins. It is advertised that staff is paid a living wage, but I feel it's more compensation for the disorganization and chaotic nature of the entire place. Attended a buffet meal, and paid full price for a 4 yr old. ($50). Ridiculously expensive. Broken bathroom that was inaccessible the entire time we were there. read more

Fresh, tasty sandwiches, yummy fresh baked pizza on Thursday's and Friday's and the LaColombe coffee is delicious. If you need some apps for a friends get together, chilled wine or pretty cocktail napkins you can pick those up too. It's hard to find charming atmosphere and good food worth waiting for. read more

I've been to the cafe several times in the past and have used them (successfully) for catered events. I went with 2 coworkers for lunch today and had to post about it! They have added a tented seating area to the front porch, with plenty of airflow, and also have outdoor seating in the garden and distanced tables in the small rooms inside the cafe. I will be honest, I was going to order the Matilda until my friend did (she loved it) and we were trying to sample different things. I then ordered the Skippy which is turkey, "Jane's Cheese", lettuce and tomato on wheat berry bread. Wow. The cheese is a cheddar spread with a light crunch and a tang to it. They serve it on large pieces of seeded bread with just the right amount of ingredients. It's amazing. I'm going to dream about this sandwich. I can see myself going specifically to get it- maybe tomorrow. It's that good. They also offer formal tea service with 48 advance reservations. Such a wonderful gem!! read more

4.5 stars! What a tea! I went to Centreville following a visit to Winterthur, right up the road. As a frequent afternoon tea goer and also a frequent Delaware/PA museum goer, I was shocked I had never been to Centreville. It only does tea Sunday through Thursday, which I think is why. Luckily, I got up there on a Sunday this time. I called ahead to make a reservation, going by their listed tea times of 3 and 4 on the website. To my relief (since I didn't want to wait until 3) they actually did seatings earlier as they were closing at 3 that day, so worth asking. Tea is $25 per person, very reasonable. By tea time, I had forgotten what was included in this particular tea and was pleased to find not three, but four courses of delicious tea items, brought out one at a time. First were the savory tea sandwiches, a tuna, a ham salad, and a cheese- the cheese was the most delicious cheese ever- it was so good I even bought some of the cheese spread to go in the Montrachet food market section of the building. It was cheese, bacon, almonds, chives, a whole bunch of delicious stuff mixed in there. My friend and I were obsessed. It's called "jane's cheese" btw. They were also generous with the sandwiches; each of us got two of each kind. Second course was more savory bits, and some fruit. Next was the desserts- Petits fours, mini cheesecakes, tarts, and cream puffs. High quality and good portions. Finally (and we weren't even sure if it was happening or not) came the scone course. The best course, in my opinion; also usually the first course. So that was a nice surprise. Two small scones each, one plain and one raisin, served with plentiful amounts of strawberry jam, lemon curd, and clotted cream. Those who know me will know that not having enough clotted cream is one of my frequent tea annoyances, but no problem here! The only reason I didn't go for 5 stars was the tea itself. We had the regular recommended English breakfast, whatever basically their house tea was. It was pretty weak/not very flavorful, not my favorite tea. They did have other kinds, next time I will ask to see a tea list. English breakfast is usually my favorite but this one just wasn't for me I guess. Wait staff and store staff were both great. You pay the bill at the register, and you can't add tip after you run the card, so remember to have them add it before swiping, or bring cash for tip. The little store is cool and I picked up some of that amazing cheese. Will definitely be back! Parking on the side of the building or a little lot beyond; also on the street. Just went in to this cafe, and as I was walking in an employees, 3 feet away from me, shut the door in my face. It was 2 minutes to closing. I politely asked through the door if I could come in and get a quick treat. He reluctantly opened the door. I then quickly and politely ordered 3 ready to go snacks and paid for them and quickly left the cafe so that they could close. I got to my car and only 2 deserts where there. The doors to the care were locked behind me and I didn't want to disrupt the employees who were closing. Needless to say, I didn't get my salted caramel desert that I paid for and I'm not happy. I ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese. Both were good, but not great. The soup was a little cold and seems like it may have been reheated in a microwave.
