The restaurant is very stark with its no decoration interior. Anyone would think you are about to dine in a prison. The tables of happy eating customers tell me that this place serves up good food. I was right! So were the reviews by fellow Yelpers recommending to 'taste for yourself and see?" I chose the a bowl of Rice Vermicelli with Pork ($9.50) also I had to try the much raved about Spring Rolls (4) $4.50. When my meal arrived it was missing fresh mint. Some restaurants do and some don't. I asked the polite waitress if she was able to provide some - as this fresh herb really adds flavour to this Vermicelli dish. She obliged happily. The menu has so many different dishes to choose from and they all look extremely tantalising to my taste buds. Everyone is eating happily with out a sound, obviously to busy enjoying the food to be able to waste time in chatter. There's no time like Pho time! That's my cheesy saying every time I go out for Pho, which... since Pho Grand from my NYC days... I haven't really had a favourite place for Pho in Sydney... *pouts*... Pho 236 is a Vietnamese restaurant in Newtown and last night I had a delicious Crispy Chicken with Tomato Rice dish. I don't have a great deal to write about it as it was a fairly simple dining experience, but simple does not mean there was necessarily anything wrong, the meal was excellent. It is always a bit refreshing to have a meal which offers an alternative to plan old white rice, so the tomato rice worked a treat. The Chicken was moist and delicious and was served on a simple salad of lettuce, tomato and cucumber, which complimented it nicely. Also I had some of the excellent fresh spring rolls, which I always have trouble bypassing in a Vietnamese restaurant, they are so fresh healthy and delicious and so different to the Chinese version. Whenever I have Vietnamese I always make a joke, being the humorous guy that I am, and I say, "What? We're getting Pho Soup? Why not get real soup!" I know, hilarious! I thought so. (Pho because it sounds like faux which means fake.) Just in case you didn't get it. I got it. I think it's hilarious! So we met up for some Vietnamese, myself and some school friends and we went to a place in Newtown called Pho 236. We sat down at the table in the homely settings, white tiles and white walls. It's a 'nothing fancy, but the food was good', type place and we sat and drank water and then when the waitress approached, we ordered. We caught up on what we were each doing, as we ate and some drank our Pho. We laughed (laughed at personal things, I don't think anyone laughed at my pho joke... I did.) and then it was time to leave. The pho was really delicious and the service was prompt. It's a very simple layout and a good place for friends. This is our "go to" place after drinks in Newtown or Erskinville. Everything is tasty from steamed chicken to beef pho to rice paper rolls. Everything is CHEAP with most meals coming in around $10. Vintage Cellars is a couple of shops down the street so BYO is easy. Service is quick, staff know the drill. They get you in, fed, and out quickly without making you feel hurried. They also do take away which is great if it's busy and you can't be bothered waiting for a table! read more

Cheap cheerful Vietnamese food. This spot is noty as shady as it looks. It is hit and miss as to whether or not you'll get a table but always worth checking and one usually frees up after 5 or 10 min wait if you're willing to wait. As their Pho is not my favourite in the inner west (I head to Marrickville for my Pho), I usually get a serve of fresh spring rolls and pepper steak with ginger rice. Newtown is a mecca of cheap, authentic Asian so places need to shake their tail feathers to set themselves apart from one another. Pho 236 is simple, casual, and straight to the point. From the ambiance, to the food, to the price, there's nothing "different" about this place than the other Vietnamese restaurant around the corner. For roughly $10 a main, the portions are large and the ingredients fresh, but again, this is the standard you'll come to expect from King Street eateries. If you're in the area and looking for inexpensive, no fuss food, Pho 236 is a good option for what else, pho! Definitely wouldn't consider it an institution, but wouldn't be opposed to returning if push came to shove. With so many other choices, there's nothing that sets Pho apart, except that it's BYO which is a huge advantage compared to other joints around. Give it a go if you're due for a pho fix, but don't expect anything you haven't had before. read more

Had special Pho here. It's OK. Not as authentic as PhD in Marrickville or those in Cabramatta. Quite similar to the taste at Gia Hoi. However, it seems to be cheaper than other Pho places. Worth coming back to try other dishes. read more

Pho 236 - Order placed ...... now we wait ! - Chinese Near Me - Newtown, NSW

The problem with a lot of these fancy restaurants is that it's hard to be sure that the dishes, although delicious, are truly authentic. I find this particularly difficult with Asian cuisine, as it is so often dumbed-down to suit the more delicate palates of the West. I don't always want to eat Chicken Tikka Masala at an Indian, or Green Curry at a Thai. Instead, I like to think that the food I'm ordering and eating is made in the same way with the same types of ingredients as it would be if you were eating it in the country it came from. Pho Vietnamese does exactly this. Its success doesn't stem from fancy cutlery or décor, but from the fact that it is unquestionably authentic and traditional Vietnamese food. Not only are the dishes given their proper names (with a description underneath), but the restaurant is filled with Vietnamese people who obviously value it's authenticity. Service is lightening quick and the waitresses are polite and attentive. Before I know it, a bowl of steaming chicken noodle soup has arrived, with deliciously crunchy vegetables, silky noodles and a generous amount of shredded chicken. To the side is a plate of beansprouts and Vietnamese mint, which is left for you to scatter as you please. I also ordered some crispy wontons and some fabulously fresh summer rolls of prawns delicately wrapped in rice paper. I am told that Pho Vietnamese also offer a great take-away service. The elements are all packaged individually for you to assemble at home, which ensures that the food remains as fresh as if you dined in. The takeaway noodle soup, for example has a separate container for the chicken broth, which you pour over the noodles and chicken before adding the beansprouts. A brilliant idea which reflects the authenticity and simplicity of the restaurant. This restaurant is a rough diamond. I love the no-frills attitude which leaves all the attention focused on what really matters - the food. It also makes the meal surprisingly cheap - $33 dollars for three people to enjoy a starter and main. Such excellent value means it's not so much of a problem that they only accept cash. read more

If looking for quality food, generous servings and quick service then Pho will not disappoint. It is definitely not a fancy place with basic dining room furniture. It is more about the food and your companions (if not solo) enjoying fresh, hot and large sized meals. Recommend the fresh spring rolls as entree, delicious . Awesome Laksa and Pho noodle dish. A total hidden gem. From the second you walk in, the restaurant doesn't look very appealing. Don't let that stop you. The staff are really friendly. The food is super low price. How is this place getting such good reviews? I have been here 3 times. The first 2 times weren't too bad considering I only had to eat around one rotting snow pea... But last night was the 'Final Straw'...I get it, it's cheap. But does that really give restaurants the right to serve you ROTTING and MOULDY food??? The chili on the table was growing, it must have been there for a week! The short soup tasted like arse. The Laksa had old, dry tofu, with seafood that looked too scary to eat. I should probably have food poisoning right now. To add to the charm, there were gross little fruit flies buzzing around my head. After our meal, which we barely touched, all they could do was tell us they were sorry about 6 or 7 times without offering any kind of discount...(Real problem solvers) I really wanted to love this place considering I love Vietnamese food, I love cheap and love BYO.
