#5 rare beef with meat balls pho
    James M.

I have had a lot of Pho from some authentic places, both in California, Seattle, Portland and Nevada. This was good not great. The service was fast but the quality of the broth was weak. The meat was good but the vegetables that are usually severed with the Pho is mint, sprouts lime and Jalapeño. They didn't give any fresh jalapeños! There wasn't any plum sauce or chili sauce. But we made do and ate it all. The people are kind and there is one important item to note. They do not accept any American currency cash or card! So bring Canadian. I gave them three stars because they are kind and fast. The adjustments that can be made are minor. They really have the potential of being great. Give them a try, support the local businesses and enjoy Vancouver's love!

    Nothing like a good pho

Maybe they have a moon cycle, maybe their meat providers are moody... what if they didn't feel like cooking those days? If two out of three times the broth is bland, without being aromatic, with meat that makes you feel guilty because you rather leave it there, in the bowl, for me is like dating. The first time you are excited, just looking the pros. Second date you already know what you disliked, then, if the third time is still not for you, just keep swapping no matter how convenient -close from your comfort zone the satisfaction is. Even for take out this tinder didn't make it for me.

As usual, I am on the lookout for a good Vietnamese joint Downtown for my weekday work lunches. This week I decided to give Pho Gold Train a try. It is a bit outside of the hustle and bustle of Downtown, but they still manage to attract quite a crowd during lunch hour. Décor is pretty similar to your typical Vietnamese joint - a little run-down looking, canteen-like. I have tried their pho with rare beef, brisket, tendon, and trip, as well as their vermicelli bowl with lemongrass chicken and spring roll. The pho broth is definitely on the milder side, but it was fine for my liking. Some jalapeños would have made the broth better though. Unfortunately, they don't offer jalapeños on their garnish plate. They do have some richer broths such as a coconut one and a peanut satay... which looked pretty good and got raving review from the diners next to me. Proteins came in decent portions, as I found that down to the last bite I still had some protein left to enjoy. Also bonus points for rare beef being served pink, as it should. I saw a lot of people having the vermicelli bowls during my first visit, so I decided to go back the next day to get one as well. The chicken was nice and juicy. I love that they coat on a bit more sauce onto the chicken, which helps add some flavour to the vermicelli. The spring roll is also to die for. Most of my usual spots in Downtown use the flour based wrappers, but this spot does the ones with the rice wrappers, which I prefer. You get that nice crunch on the outside, but also the chewy texture. The filling is really good too - nice mix of taro and meat. Pro-tip: if you are looking to reduce your carb intake, ask for less/no noodles and substitute with bean sprouts. I have tried both dine-in and take-out. If you dine-in and you're on your own, there's a chance you'll have to sit at their longer/communal table. That was the case for me - sat at a table long enough for 8 people between a party of 2 and a party of 3. No uncommon in Vietnamese joints though during busy times. Otherwise, take out is also an option! No issues with calling in ahead of time and putting in an order. When I arrived 10 mins later, it was ready for me and exactly what/how I wanted. I asked for their take out menu and discovered they haven't bothered to update it since their price increase. Funny because I was wondering what took the cashier so long to pull one out for me. Turned out it was because she had to pull out a pen to note that I need to add $3 to menu items..haha I wouldn't say that is necessarily accurate as most of the appies and sandwiches only had a $1-2 price increase based on their dine-in menu. Wish they would just print an updated menu..

First time try this one and already smell good.

Always good and standard. The people work there are very nice. Highly recommend if you are craving. Try their extra large size soup noodle.

House special satay peanut butter coconut milk soup. Spicy and delicious!

The satay pho with coconut milk was excellent. Lots of flavour. A bit stingy on the meat but the broth made up for it. Will be back

They also have a bar area. Kind of an Asian French fusion menu. Food dishes were good and creative, but it didn't really appeal to me. I appreciated the good service and chill atmosphere, but not sure if I would come back. I would say that their house made spicy was really good. A mix of sweet, sour, and spicy. Had a brightness to it yet also very, very spicy. Tastes great on many of the dishes, especially if you wanted a nice "kick" to the food. I believe you can order a jar to take home if you wish.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

Went in for lunch with my granddaughter, both of us fans of Vietnamese food. Ordered Green Papaya Salad ($12), Lemongrass Chicken on Vermicelli with one spring roll ($17), one lime soda ($6.50) and one pop ($3). Food arrived within minutes of ordering. Portions were very generous. The salad was perfect with everything very fresh, as it should be but often isn't in some places. Plump prawns and the scent and taste of basil was prominent. Delicious! The lemongrass chicken (we ordered extra chicken) with a spring roll was also very generous. We did not finish it between the two of us. Again, all was fresh, tasty and hot. This is one of our standard orders and Pho Goodness did not disappoint. Granddaughter declared it better than at our regular favourite, and Pho Goodness is around the corner from her home and not a bus ride out to Kingsway! Service was friendly and responsive. We asked that the volume be turned off on the massive TV over our heads (which nobody was watching) (it was), requested a glass for the pop and immediately received a tumbler full of ice. Lovely. We have found a new favourite on Davie Street, a true foodie heaven with a collection of independent restaurants of many ethnicities available. We will return to Pho Goodness when the urge for Vietnamese food strikes again.

The Garden Rolls were absolutely the #1 worst ones we've ever eaten! We've had hundreds of fresh rolls at dozens of places and sadly, none were as tasteless as these. They consisted of noodles, a bit of flavorless tofu and cucumber. Fresh rolls MUST have at least one or more of the following: fresh mint, fresh cilantro or fresh Thai Basil. Hestia's had NONE!. To add insult to injury, the watery sauce also had NO flavor. To add more insult, they were baggy and poorly wrapped and the innards kept falling out. Not fun and definitely not good. The king oyster mushrooms were very good, but there was a ton of pink mayo dousing it. I would have preferred the sauce be in a separate bowl so we could choose how much dipping we'd like to do. The saffron tofu bowl was sensational! Perfectly spiced and full of a huge variety of well-cooked veggies plus the saffron rice was good too. No one came during our meal to ask if we needed anything or to ask how our meal was. The customer service is in need of some work.

My wife and I stopped in for dinner one evening and each ordered the aforementioned noodle soup--she got a small ($11.75 plus tax) and I got a regular ($12.75 plus tax). We also got an order of salad rolls ($7.50 plus tax), which comes with 2 rolls. The rolls came quite late. They were pretty standard, coming with fried tofu, vermicelli, and lettuce. The peanut dipping sauce was on the liquidy, salty soy sauce side of things -- I wish it were creamier and less salty. 3/5 The soups were decent. The broth was peppery, with some nice, gentle spices detectable in there. I asked for a side of chili oil, which helped amplify the broth. You get a generous portion of noodles, fried tofu, and vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, carrot). Unfortunately the veggies were quite overcooked -- the broccoli was almost soggy, so were the carrots and bok choy. 3/5 All in all, middle-of-the-road veggie pho. The broth is pleasant. The veggies were overcooked, but plentiful and nicely chosen. Decent place for veggie pho.
