Currently on the hunt for a good bowl of pho in the Boston area and this didn't do it for me. What we got: Pho with brisket/rare steak, spicy satay pho, regular pho, pepper chicken I actually quite enjoyed the pepper chicken, which was fried to a golden color with a good amount of salty and spiciness. It reminded me of Taiwanese basil fried chicken, which I love. Next, the pho. The pho wasn't terrible but the broth was a little on the bland side for me and there was barely any meat included. I probably had about 3 slices of rare steak (that was pretty tough and wasn't rare when given which is what I've seen at other places and then you let the hot broth cook the slices) with a tiny handful of brisket. The noodles stuck together and the entire bowl just looked kind of lackluster to me. The service was fine, no complaints in that department. However, I will try other places first. Note: I'm a little biased with pho places because I grew up going to Pho 88 in Drum hill and nothing has beat that for me so far. read more

I ordered crab ragoon and the beef pho with some Vietnamese coffee on the side. The best part about this meal was the coffee. The crab ragoon has no kind of crab in it at all not even imitation. The quality of food has gone down. Ordered some appetizers and the peanut sauce has gone sour, I taste a bit and the next day I had diarrhea. I know the restaurants are struggling these days but the chef shouldn't lower the standard try to save a few bucks and serve food or sauce that has gone bad. read more

Middle-of-the-road Vietnamese place on Harvard St in Coolidge Corner. Good: huge space, easy to get a seat even on a Saturday night, solid variety of Vietnamese staples. Average: mixed drinks always feel watered down, food quality is hit-or-miss with pho broth leaning too salty and light on flavor. Prices are about what you'd expect. Eh...I originally wanted to bring my friend to Le's, but realized that it was closed due to the holiday. We ended up going here as a last resort. Luckily for my friend, it was his first time trying pho, so he had absolutely ZERO standards. I've got two words for this place: pricey and blech. Their food is just not good. It's either bland, greasy, pricey, lacking, or all of the above. The pho is bland, the "grilled" meat that goes on the vermicelli is greasy, everything costs more than it does anywhere else, the food is lacking cuz there's never as much as there should be, and all of the above is pretty much self-explanatory. Don't go to Le's, you will get the same. For the closest access to Pho that you can get in that area is the stand at Super 88. Want something more restaurant-like? Go to Chinatown. Alrighty...dinner here was okay. Bland, but filling and okay. Okay being the key word. Hubs and I were in Coolidge Corner looking for something to have for dinner. We were going to go to Paris Creperie, but decided that going there for breakfast would be a better idea. Pho Lemongrass. Upon entry, we were seated right away, given water, then a few minutes to peruse the menu. Josh and I both got pho, which seemed like a good idea. Josh got vegetarian pho and I got pho chicken. The vegetarian pho had noodles, dehydrated onion pieces in it, which was weird, vegetarian broth, and little to no vegetables. The chicken pho had noodles, chicken, chicken broth, and little to no vegetables as well. To add veggies, it was $2.00 more, which I declined. I got worried as the dehydrated onions tasted very bacon-y to me. But it was indeed onions as we conferred with the waitress. Food was filling, but insanely bland. We both dumped a ton of garlic chili paste in our bowls. Service was sub par. There was awkward silences and weird looks. I hope they didn't think we were upset about the random dehydrated onions looking like bacon in a veggie pho, but hey I was a concerned consumer. In my evaluation, three means regular restaurant. I feel just regular image. Don't forget the Pho was amazingly good. Went with a couple friends. Most of us ordered various pho dishes. I got the Xe Lua /火車頭 and it was quite underwhelming. The broth was bland and boring. Not much meat... actually very little meat and super thin at that. For the price (it's pricier here than anywhere else I've been to), I would expect much more. For less money and better pho, I'd go to Chinatown. Not my fave, but I'd recommend Pho Le over here any day. Overall, disappointing. This is one of my favorite causal places to go in Brookline. The servings of pho are huge and the price ($7-$9) is pretty cheap compared to others. The fresh summer rolls are great to split as an appetizer. Ample seating inside at both small tables and large booths. If you call for pickup, they usually have it ready in 10mins or less. read more

The Short: Loud, very casual, but very good Vietnamese for a low price. The Longer: The Nime Chow was fairly decent and lovely at just $5.50. I love the selection of SE Asian brew -- including 33 and Singha. I was tempted to get another appetizer but held off hoping the Pho would be massive and rich -- and it was! I got the large brisket and it was fabulous. All the sides/fixings you'd expect with plenty of chili and hoisin. The broth was very well done and while not the best I've ever had certainly one of the more legit in the Brookline/Boston area. My other had the vegetable pho with tofu and enjoyed it highly. The service was fair. It was pretty loud around 6pm on a weeknight, and I needed to flag down for service or taking away dishes when you're done or ready to order. Coolidge Corner is a fun place to hang out or meet your friends for the day, go shopping, or just grab a cappuccino. This Vietnamese cuisine experience was fantastically different mysterious & tasty. The waitress recommended and I ordered a Canh Chua soup with whitefish. It's a house specialty, mildly hot and sour soup with bean sprouts, pineapple chunks, celery, fresh tomatoes, and Asian basil and an aromatic spicy tamarind broth! The taste of the broth alone is worth the price of admission. The vegetables & fish were cooked perfect. Try it. I shared the Mekong (yellow) Curry with seafood madness. It had sautéed vegetables of peppers, onions, carrots, broccoli, summer squash, zucchini, string beans and pea pods in a chef's special curry sauce!! If there were half reviews, I would really rate this a 2.5. So why the bump to a 3 star? Well, the food is not bad. It's just no where near authentic. If I could give 0 stars, I would. My wife and I walked and we're not greeted. We sat on the side looking at the menu and when I had a question, I went to go ask the host and the host literally did not acknowledge me and kept his eyes on his phone. When we were ready to order, my wife went up and literally pointed on the menu of what she wanted, placed the order, and got our order in about 15 minutes. Fast forward to when we get home, checked the food (should've checked before we left) and the order was wrong. My wife called and spoke to the gentlemen than ignored me when I was there. He told her she misunderstood the order and they will not give us our money back or give us the correct order. Horrible experience. I should've known when I first walked I, the establishment was a disgrace to vietnamese restaurants. It was disgusting and we should've walked out but we wanted to give them a chance since my wife and I were looking for a new pho spot because we just moved from Cali. The food that we brought home was was also a disgrace to Vietnamese food. If you are reading this (restaurant owners), you are a disgrace to Vietnamese people and Vietnamese food and should be ashamed of yourselves for the way you display your business and the way you treat your customers. Went here on a whim for dinner and was pleasantly surprised! For an appetizer - we got the mixed app player. Surprisingly the squarish bread with sesame and the chicken wings were the best! For the main course we ordered - the duck and noodles with pork and peanut sauce. The noodles hit the spot! Service was speedy and very consistent. The only thing that truly bothered me was the flickering lights but we chalked it up to a communication system for food delivery...haha. I started with the fresh shrimp roll. They were fine although it was clear that the lettuce wasn't super fresh. Then, I ordered the seafood clay pot. It didn't actually come in a clay pot, more like a metal bowl (not a dealbreaker but presentation is important and I've never been to restaurant that advertised a clay pot meal and then didn't actually bring out a clay pot) and it was essentially over cooked rice topped with seafood and reheated frozen peas and carrots. Clearly not fresh ingredients. I ended up sending it back after taking two bites because there was literally no flavor whatsoever to it. The server was accommodating and I ordered the fish ball pho. The broth was good (certainly more flavorful than the seafood clay pot). Vegetables were brought out to accompany the soup but they were wilting. The fish balls were kind of rubbery. On the plus side, the servers were attentive. I think overall the restaurant is just lacking in the fine details. The ingredients are clearly not fresh. I stopped in for a quick bite with my partner on a Saturday afternoon in between lunch and dinner time. I was skeptical looking around at the dated tables and chairs. We ordered chicken skewers and pineapple fried rice. The chicken skewers came out first and were AWESOME! Hot right out of the oven, perfectly juicy, fit fam, served over a bed of lettuce with delicious sauce on the side. The pineapple fried rice was also surprisingly AWESOME. The dish came out looking unexpected, but the taste was LIT. The flavors blended together so well every bite was a treat. There were no leftovers. The food was on point. I love love love Pho, and Pho Lemongrass is my favorite spot in Brookline to get a steaming hot bowl of noodle goodness. Their vegetarian pho is surprisingly delicious, as is their chicken pho. I recommend eating there, but they do have the option for take-out. They provide you with three different sauces to flavor and spice up your broth, so you can decide how spicy or salty you want your broth to be. The lunch prices are unbeatable - $9 for a huge bowl of noodles! The staff is friendly and the food comes out very quickly, so it's a perfect spot to go during your lunch hour! Great portions, here, as well. Expect to walk out very full after finishing a bowl :) Awesome location, right in the heart of Coolidge Corner next to the Trader Joe's. They only offer street parking, but that's common for the area. Overall, great food, great service, and definitely a good spot for a quick Vietnamese fix. read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend. It's a small restaurant inside, our waitress was attentive and the food came out pretty quick. The pineapple rice was delicious, I had never had this dish before and was very pleasantly surprised. My fellow diner and myself decided to split dishes so I wasn't able to try the Pho. We had their summer rolls that were good and tasted like most summer rolls I have had in the past. The Mango Chicken was tender and flavorful, I would want to try a different entree in the future. I LOVE this place. Everytime I get a craving for soup, this is mine and my GF's go to place. The pho is absolutely delicious and warms me up on a cold Boston day. I highly recommend the Chicken Pho and be sure to add all the fixings in (Thai basil, bean sprouts and lime). Additionally, they provide sauce to add into the soup. The avocado smoothie killed it for me - they should not be ladling in liquid syrup! Avocado smoothies tend to already be delicious with just condensed milk and even then it can be a lot depending on how much they put in. Make sure to ask for your smoothies sans liquid sweetener if you're trying to avoid cavities. The atmosphere is nicer than tons of pho places you'd go to for good pho and the service is very fast. The day I went in for lunch, the broth was one note and disappointing. A friend of mine who lives in the area claims this is some of the better pho he's had and I'd have to disagree but maybe I need to try this place again? The noodles were good and plentiful for a small bowl and the fixins were all there but it's hard to want to come back when you can go elsewhere for a soup that's a sure thing! The price of a small is equal to a large at a dingier place with a better tasting pho but I guess you're paying for atmosphere and service. There's street parking and this place is very T accessible (Coolidge Corner stop) and if a friend invited me out to lunch/dinner here I wouldn't say no but I also wouldn't go out of my way to come back. The lemongrass pho satay here is addicting. My boyfriend and I crave it on a regular basis and it's become an essential staple of our diets. He likes it spicy; I order it with it a little less spice than it normally comes with. It's refreshing and filling at the same time; the broth is delicious. We've tried multiple pho places around the Boston area, but Pho Lemongrass remains our go-to. The service is really prompt, both at the restaurant and for delivery. You can tell this business runs smoothly and they know what they're doing. I will come here again and again, until I get sick of pho (which I don't predict happening anytime soon!) read more

The pho here isn't fantastic for what you pay, but then again, if it's in Coolidge Corner, it's probably on the pricier side. Whenever I get pho, I usually get the spring rolls to split and the pho special, which is pretty much a little of everything (brisket, flank, meatballs, tripe, etc) with noodles and broth (don't forget the lime, mint leaves, and bean sprouts!). The quality of the pho was okay (didn't seem as traditional), but I was more so disappointed in the portion size, because you just get a small bowl of pho and you pay more than you would compared to Pho Hua or Pho Pasteur in Chinatown. So if you're in Coolidge Corner/Brookline Village and are craving some pho and don't want to travel all the way to Chinatown then Lemongrass would be a good alternative...just don't expect too much from them if you've had good pho before. read more

When I was in middle school, I read The Outsiders and I learned the phrase, "From the wrong side of the tracks." Usually if you're from the unsavory part of town, you're from the wrong side of the tracks. In the case of the culinary scene in Allston-Brookline, you're eating on the on the wrong side of the tracks if you're eating with the Brookline gentry in their desirable locale. Pho Lemongrass is a good example of that. Let's take their Pho, a crown jewel in Vietnamese cuisine. Their chicken stock is more like your Zaftig's Jewish penicillin than the earthy star anise-flavored broth you'll get at Le's Vietnamese in Allston. Their accompanying bean sprout plate is more a mole hill than a mountain. Instead of offering the typical hoisin sauce-chili paste-siracha condiment triad, they throw you a set of Thai condiments. Wait, I thought I was in a Vietnamese restaurant? Did the upstarts in Thailand decide to take over Vietnam? Why don't Yelp folk announce this kind of information on the Yelp Talk instead of comparing their Freshman Purity Test scores? Okay, I digressed . . . because you've read so far, here is my two cents: Head over to Allston, people. The food is cheap, the crowd is hip. Leave the Brookline restaurant for the yuppies who think they are being worldly by eating watered down versions of world cuisine. read more

Husband was feeling sick and so pho seemed to be a good option. We kept it basic and ordered summer rolls to start. I also got a small pho with rare steak and he ordered the Dac Biet. I liked the summer rolls a lot - the rice paper was chewy and not tough/stale like some other places. And they omit the basil which I also appreciated. The pho was just fine. I noticed a lot of 'oil bubbles' skimming the top but it didn't really taste greasy. Husband made the comment that his meat tasted like "wet rag." A bit extreme (and I'm not sure how he knows what wet rag tastes like), but I did not feel so aversely about mine. Service was good - they do a great job in topping off your water and being available if needed. I do think the price is higher than you'd normally see for pho. Lunch menu was varied and reasonable so it may be worth checking out then! I will say that we took a huge afternoon nap afterwards - to what I attribute that to, I'm not sure! Went there for lunch with friends on a sat at 12 ish - before it peaks at around 1. 1) food is not that great and much over-priced, and small portion. 2) services are bad. Our waitress was fine. But the other waiter (the only guy around. Didn't know his name) was rude and impatient. I was planning to order desserts (as I feel like eating nothing with the small portions) but he simply cleaned up our table and brought us the check. So to free up table for people waiting. Well, with this food quality, pricy menu and bad service. I don't think it deserves me spending extra $ on dessert here, nor come back for another meal. read more
