It's no Le family food. The service has improved somewhat at Pho Saigon over the years, and the food has remained consistently "pretty good". The location is convenient to East Memphians and to midtowners. Decor is minimal, the restroom is always clean and stocked with magazines and piles of paper goods. Let's start with the service: atrocious. We had to call out to the waitress, who ignored us completely after bringing our food, for more water. And when she came by with a pitcher to refill us, she only refilled my glass and then just walked off without refilling my friend's glass. We even called out to her again -- no dice. And y'all, the place just isn't that big. How she didn't hear us, I haven't the slightest. Perhaps she was distracted by the busy, dramatic conversation going on between everyone else that worked in the restaurant, who were all seated at a large round table near the cashier. Either way, the service was bad enough to warrant a blank tip line on my receipt. I usually feel heinous for not leaving a tip, but I didn't feel an ounce of guilt today. It was truly that bad. The food was just okay. (And when the food is just okay, the bad service seems even worse.) I had the vermicelli noodles with veggies and tofu. It was spicy, but otherwise largely flavorless. I was happy to see hoisin sauce on the table that I dipped all my tofu in and drizzled over the veggies. I also had the spring roll, which was fairly flavorless, too chewy and overpowered by mint. The only good thing about Pho Saigon is that its the only decent Vietnamese place not off of Cleveland. In general, it is the Motown of Vietnamese food, ie Vietnamese food for white people. Imagine how the ancient and dynamic Chinese cuisine was brought to America and somehow ended up "beef and broccoli w special sauce." This is Pho Saigon's approach. Its boring Vietnamese-themed food. They don't use the ingredients that make Vietnamese food special; instead they find cheap substitutes and assume whiteys won't know differences. Wow I'm so predictable, there was however a time my palate was juvenile and plain as a chicken nugget. Pho Saigon was the first "different" place I tried I made the mistake of ordering a soup without reading the ingredients:) imaging my surprise when it showed up w fish and octopus and clams!!! 3.5 stars. Now this is real Vietnamese food unlike Vietnamese Lotus. Memphians need to know authenticity - see my pic I uploaded. I had the combo bun thom thit nuong cha gio - pork, shrimp and fried spring roll on vermicelli with veggies. Pretty decent size and delish too. Shrimps are small and only two of them. Nuoc cham sauce was on the sweet side for my liking, but none the less still good. Plenty of pork. Spring roll is loaded and very tasty. Plenty of veggies too - cucumber, daikon, carrots, chopped lettuce and raw fresh bean sprouts with garnishes of mint and basil. large squirt of srichacha hot sauce from the bottle is a must. The spring rolls were very bland. Though they seem huge, each consisted of one piece of shrimp, surrounded by lettuce and a couple bean sprouts. I might as well have just been eating plain lettuce. The rice paper was also so chewy that I was barely able to break off bites. They seemed very undercooked. The noodle bowl was nothing else to brag about. First, there was no seasoning or sauce on it. It was like eating pasta without sauce or a salad without dressing. It was a mix of tofu, carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts, and noodles. With nothing else. Second, it was cold. Maybe I am wrong here to assume that noodle bowls are supposed to be hot, but either way, I DO KNOW that tofu is never supposed to be served cold. I am the only person in the restaurant, so why is my food coming out stone cold? Basically it was a cold bowl of noodles, with a few extra additions every now and then. I end up picking the tofu out of the noodle bowl and dipping it in the peanut sauce to eat it. After I ate the tofu, I go up to the counter to pay and get a take out box for the rest of my noodle bowl. I ended up using the leftovers to make my own chicken stir-fry noodle bowl at home a few days later. Overall, the portions are large, so price is not an issue. This place is good but it didn't impress me. Service was crappy and the interior looks like a dingy public school cafeteria. The soup is what I went for- (Pho Saigon is their name after all) but it was really bland, watery, and skimpy on the vermicelli, meat, and sprouts. But on to what you really want to know about: the food. If you leave here without trying the fried spring rolls then you are perfectly okay leading a sub par life. They're that good. This is the first Vietnamese restaurant I ever went to, and 15 years later, after having gone to *many* it's still one of my faves. I used to be turned off because of the service (yes, it's bad...like most Vietnamese restaurants), but after I kept returning, the staff totally warmed up to me and even cracked a smile or recognition. Their combo vermicellii is my favorite all time thing, and it's certainly reasonably priced. My first and last time. I didn't even get to eat. 1st it was me not getting any drinks until after I got my appetizer on the table, and the woman never asked us what we wanted to drink, she automatically brought water. 2ndly, the utensils weren't in any wrappings or coverings. You'd think they'll take more precautions due to the COVID-19. 3rdly, I noticed the same woman who cleaned tables bring us our waters with straws already in it even though there were COVERED straws already provided on the table... & I highly doubt she washed her hands or used a napkin to put the straws in our cup. I was confused as to why she even did that. THE FINAL IT! The eggrolls appetizer that was brought to me had hair inside of the wrap, not on top, but it was fried in the wrap with the roll. I really don't understand how anyone could give Pho Saigon less than a five-star rating. I mean, have you guys eaten at the other Vietnamese restaurants around Memphis? I have, and Pho Saigon is literally the ONLY one that has amazing food with the service being on par to most family-owned Vietnamese restaurants. Beyond that, it's my favorite Asian restaurant in the city. Not convinced after reading the other reviews? Go to Pho Saigon, and try the eggrolls with lettuce and fish sauce. I guarantee they will hook you with this appetizer alone. And once they have you there, you have got to explore the rest of the restaurant's menu. The chicken noodle soup, consisting of chicken broth, pulled chicken, white onions, and cilantro, is a classic pho dish. But if you're feeling adventurous, try the rice pancakes with Asian sausage or the caramelized catfish. Not that adventurous but want to try something other than pho? The lemongrass chicken/beef/shrimp/tofu dish is for you. Oh, and if you're looking for dessert after eating one of these delicious meals, try Pho Saigon's avocado shake with tapioca bubbles or the restaurant's French coffee over ice. You'll be in heaven. We were around the Popular area, and craved for some Vietnamese food. So we decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere was ok, bright orange walls. Servers/owners? were nice and greeted us as we walked in. We order the vermicelli, bowl of pho, and the Vietnamese pancake. The portion looks to be a lot but don't be fooled as it's only an illusion lol. It's a big plate with a bunch of veggies with little meat, and noodles. Even a 4-star reviewed talked about how she had to add basil and such to have a flavor. Such herbs are only to complement the pho, not make it. There are other better places for pho in Memphis without having to deal with the crap that is Poplar and its crowded lanes. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. The three star rating is probably right on the money. I've had some just not good dishes but the Banh Mi is pretty good. The avocado shake was good but the pork rolls are not. Service is usually ok if not friendly. It was 90 degrees in the place today. Edit- had the beef pho today and it ok. Not great but not bad. The best pho is town is noodle star. Ok..I've been going here for pho for 12 years... (The past 6 whenever I'm in town) I haven't been able to find pho ga this good (taste,variety and freshness of ingredients, esp. broth) in my past 4 years in Toronto. (I've been trying!) I've also been to Vietnam, and, maybe I'm biased but this Pho is as amazing if not better than any I've ever had. And it's really good, super authentic, and cheap. Maybe customer service isn't up to par, but Memphis is lucky to have this place because the food is delicious. So I just saw some bad reviews for (IMO) not very legit reasons, so I'm writing this defend one of my favourite restaurants, and hope you'll give it a try. This place is amazing. Ignore the one star haters. The Pho Ga (chicken soup) is fantastic. Pho Tai Nam (beef brisket) soup is fantastic. Fresh spring rolls worth peanut sauce are really good. They have a curry soup that is worth a shot if you'd want to branch out a little. For a savory meal they have a pork chop and rice plate served with pickled vegetables and a runny fried egg on top of the rice and chop. There are several Vietnamese places in Memphis. Most have a few special things. I think Pho Saigon has the best soup of all the Vietnamese places in Memphis ! Try it and you won't be disappointed read more

Great banh-mi deal $4! The pho is mediocre -- broth is a bit light for my taste, and the ingredients arent the most fresh. Vietnamese iced coffee was too sweet, they don't give you the whole contraption and just make it in the back, so I'm not sure how fresh the coffee is here. I come back for the banh-mi. read more

I love their food. Large portions for sure. The vermicelli bun dishes are perfect... I get the combo one. Their eggrolls are great, and the shrimp spring rolls. Pho is always a nice choice for the winter - I order the shrimp Pho. Very authentic, family owned (bit of a language barrier at times, but even more of the authentic vibe right!). The Spring Rolls and Vermicelli combo are my go-tos, but Caramelized Pork, Lemongrass Beef, and the soups are all tasty too! The Bubble Teas are great as is the "Rainbow Dessert" for dessert. But, yeah the desserts are a bit daunting to the non-adventurous eater. The "Rainbow Dessert" consists of sweetened red beans, jelly and coconut milk over ice so that may not be your thing! If you're feeling adventurous though, this place is great! Service is great, but they don't like to be kept waiting either so don't be one of those that can never seem to decide what to eat! I had the clear noodle soup with chicken. I'm not Asian, and I don't pretend to be an expert on Asian food. I'm speaking simply from a taste perspective -- I thought it was great. I'm a soup fanatic and chunky, interesting soups are right up my alley. I loved the combination of flavors -- and I love that these foods are whole foods. Not overly-processed for the most part. The addition of cilantro to soup is an interesting choice, and I really enjoyed it. Swung by here because i was craving pho. It was a small location but was pretty busy when i arrived. I got greeted pretty quickly and was seated right after. I ordered the pho tai nam, fried egg rolls and a banh mi ( sub sandwich ). The broth from the pho wasn't bad but to me it was alittle on the bland side somi had to add extra stuff to it. It is time to update my review, because Pho Saigon has earned their stars. I frequently - like, REALLY frequently! - eat Vietnamese food. So I think I know a thing or two about it, despite being about as white as possible. :) I have three main spots to get my fix, and each place has their strengths (which keep me going back!) as well as weaknesses. What Pho Saigon does really, really well are the EGG ROLLS. They are awesome. Get a couple orders (you won't want to share!) and ask for extra lettuce to roll them up in, authentic-style. I always order them to start and then occasionally get more for "dessert." The bahn Xeo, or the "omelet," which is a bad name because, although it looks like an omelet, it is not made with eggs. It is a crispy crepe filled with onion, mung bean, pork, shrimp, and general deliciousness. It is messy to eat, but worth it. I also like the pho soups, but one of my favorite soups is the curry soup. Instead of chicken, which is how it's listed on the menu (bun ga cari), I get tofu and added veggies. Go for the large and eat your leftovers over rice! It is comfort in a bowl. The sausage spring rolls (listed with the entrees) are unique and delicious, though also a bit messy. I think I just like messy food... They also make great fresh lemonade and the avocado shake is a creamy treat. The weaknesses... Not a big fan of the lo mein, though it's been years since I've had it, so it might have gotten better. The wings tend to be a bit dry. Peanut sauce is a little too sweet and a little too runny for the fresh spring rolls, though I sometimes get it and dip my soup veggies in it, and that tastes good. And in the past, the chicken things I've tried (soup, stir-fries) that use chicken breast have all been dry, so I've avoided those for a while. Bottom line - come here for the strengths! It is well worth it. Service can be so-so, but the ladies are nice as you get to know them. They will bring more basil/lettuce/etc if you ask for it - sometimes the portion they give you is scanty, but they told me once that it was because so many people don't use it and they don't want to waste it. I'll make this short. I ordered the Lemongrass chicken and fried egg rolls. 1. The egg rolls tasted like they'd been fried for hours and then heated back up. 2. The chicken was horrible tasting. This place is where I like to visit to get my banh mi fix. I have to get it at least once a week or my soul starts to grow weary. I only started coming here a couple months ago and I am kicking myself for waiting this long before trying it out. I usually come for lunch and order a lot of food so that I can have leftovers for dinner. Here is my plan of attack: shrimp spring roll, soup (pho tai or spicy hue style beef soup), and banh mi. If I were to ever choose a meal that would be my last meal; this combination would be a strong contender. The prices and portions are very nice here. My order is usually right at $20. That may be high for a lunch, but I do get at least 2 meals out of this amount of food. The spring rolls are large and soup bowls are huge (order a large, only a couple bucks more). If my friend hadn't blocked my car in my driveway today, I would be on the way to eat here right now. Damn you Michael! read more

Omg! I haven t been here in a while! And I love Vietnamese's food! But there one thing I know is MSG make you sleepy. I went to have lunch today with my friend and the food was ok compare to the other Vietnamese restaurant in Memphis. The service was ok, they have a full staff and we got seated pretty quick and the wait time was pretty slow. There was a mixture of people that was dinning so, I was wondering why I haven't been here in a while. Should of read the review before I came in. After lunch I started having headaches and feeling sleepy. Everyone told me they put an extreme amount of MSG in there food. Lucky today was Good Friday I had lunch around 1am came home and went to sleep about 230 and woke up at 630 I just lost 4hr of my life. I tried calling my friend and she haven't respond I hope she ok. Just want to put it out there that there food is saturated in MSG. read more

I used to love Pho Saigon. When I moved however, I wasn't able to go as much. Yesterday my son & I were in the area so I excitedly brought us to what used to be one of my fave restaurants. Wrong decision. Food was horrible. I made specific requests for my son's fried rice - just peas & carrots. Theycame back with rice loaded with all sets of vegetables - corn, okra, Lima beans, green beans, multi colored pepper. Yuck! Beyond the out of place vegetables, rice itself tasted horrible! Service was atrocious! I had to ask for drinks, and then for refills. You would think they were short - handed but they were not. Not only were we the only customers at 5 PM, their whole group was huddled in the 1st table yakking away. Place was horrible. The whole time we were eating, my son & I were swatting at huge flies. The staff saw us the whole time and do you think they offered any help, much less apologize? Oh no. Needless to say, we are NEVER going back to this place. read more
