The owner is very kind and always comes by to chat with us when she's not too busy, which makes the place feel warm and welcoming. You can tell she puts a lot of heart into preserving and carrying on the Le family's authentic flavors and traditions. Their lotus salad is the best in town. The pho and house special rice dishes are my usual go-to dishes and always hit the spot. Recently, we tried two of their new dishes and were really impressed. The stone bowl pho was amazing--the broth was incredibly smooth, clean, and natural-tasting, and the meatballs were flavorful and delicious. Spent 15 minutes here and will never return. The woman serving us was rude to my mom, my child, and me--ignoring us while laughing at videos in a booth. My polite 12-year-old complimented the drink, and she just walked off, then asked "What'd he say?" without acknowledging him. She greeted fair-skinned customers warmly, but gave us no thank you, or basic courtesy. She never took my drink order and prioritized others who walked in after us. We're leaving as soon as we pay. This place hit the spot! I was visiting Memphis? it was a cold rainy day and all I wanted was a really good bowl of hot tasty Pho. This place was one of those spots that may not have provided a flashy-trendy decor, but the flavors and great taste were soooo good! As soon as I opened the door I knew I was in the right spot for something truly authentic, the waitress and owner were friendly. I've had the opportunity to chat with her a few times about her family, her journey and the current ups and downs of the restaurant business! Tonight she came to the rescue once again! I came to Memphis and got sick! I needed some soup to help aid whatever this was that was trying to take my immune system out! I asked her for some hot broth and/or whatever she had in there that was quick and easy, being that it was 7 minutes to closing! ITS SOOOOO GOOD! She packaged the broth separately from the fillings! It was packed with shrimp, surimi, thinly sliced pork, bean sprouts, fresh jalapeños, scallion, and fried garlic! Don't forget the yummy pork dumplings and noodles! I added a huge spoonful of chili crispy to spice it up a bit more! Huge bowl of pho with leftovers for the next day! It was the perfect cure! I'm stuffed and feeling a lot better! There is parking in the front of the place. It was consistently busy when we arrived. Started off with the spring rolls and yummy peanut sauce. I could have eaten all the sauce without the spring roll! Also ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee. Strong coffee with ice and a good amount of condensed milk. It was very refreshing. For dinner we ordered bun which is somewhat cold rice noodles, lettuce, fish sauce, chargrilled fragrant pork, fried spring rolls, julienne carrots and cucumber. It was very delish. I will have enough for lunch tomorrow. Wanted a side dish of bok choy and mushrooms. That was a tad salty but very tasty. We only ate half of that dish also. It comes with an order of rice. Located in a small strip mall next to "The Hightones" bar you will find this famous legacy eatery formally known as Saigon Lee... now operated by the daughter of the original establishment. Best family owned Vietnamese resturant in town. Look for family style meals and appetisers especially the salad egg rolls which come (10) with a big bowl of fresh herbs and sauces. I highly recommend the lemongrass chicken and the ginger tofu but nothing is less than original. The owners will make you feel like family instantly so be prepared for this. Come on in and be pampered and enjoy the best Vietnamese fare around! They will try to make you any speciality dish you can think of if you ask, and I would never normally recommend getting fried rice from anywhere - their house fried rice is full of shrimp and (well) everything they have in the kitchen! I liked the house special lemongrass curry tofu, which was salty and flavorful and good with the rice it came with. Shrimp vermicelli was decent, although the pickled daikon and carrot didn't seem pickled at all. The shrimp itself was a bit bland (true of the spring rolls as well). Peanut sauce for the rolls was good though! I'd say the food generally warrants three stars--good but nothing special or great. Mainly the things that bothered me were related to the incorrect prices on the menu, a credit card charge that wasn't mentioned at all, and then when I brought up the incorrect pricing, I got a lot of attitude even though I was just trying to bring it to their attention. The boss knew that the menu price was wrong and just wasn't bothered to mark it (she admitted this), which feels unethical. I love this place! The best pho I've had in Memphis. As a Vietnamese person, this pho has came closest to authentic pho. The service is very friendly and fun. Yes, it's worth the hype. We visited Tuyen's on New Year's Eve - great location near Crosstown with a cute cafe vibe. There weren't many in the restaurant around 11:30, but it filled up as noon approached. Service was good, and although our server didn't speak English well she made a good effort to understand our questions. There were others working who did speak better English. But the language barrier is often how you know it's good and authentic! We ordered the tofu with lemongrass (5/5), vegetable fried rice (3.5/5), spring rolls (4/5), and salt and pepper tofu with jalapeño (1000/5). I can't stop thinking about the salt and pepper tofu!!!! It was so well seasoned, crispy, and blazing hot on the inside. I loved the lemongrass tofu as well. I would say the white rice could've been cooked better, but it didn't detract much from the meal. The spring rolls were good. The fried rice was solid. I thought the prices were pretty good for the amount of food you got, and I'll be returning asap for the salt and pepper tofu. I never ate at Saigon Le. It was a Memphis institution. Despite that, I can say that the legacy is alive and well. The fine folks that ran the veritable standard bearer of Vietnamese food in the Mid-South had a daughter, Tuyen, and she picked up right where mom and pop Le left off. Late lunch with the Scientist, a friend, and an out-of-towner. The friend, it should be disclaimed, is The Food Guy, someone who cooks, eats, and all other things food. Simply put, read his Yelp review (if he has one), not mine. He uses dollar words in masterful prose...I use dime store lingo here when I'm not going on a tangent (which may happen, so head's up!). The place is homely, stationed on the south end of a strip center on Cleveland near Crosstown. Parking is ample. Inside you'll find a small but welcoming space. The proprietor greeted me as I waited for the rest of the cast. I was IMMEDIATELY queried by her other front of house staff member whether I wanted to order. Not realizing how high stakes this was, as the rest of the patrons could only be called torpid in their pace, I mustered a "no thank you" and perused the menu. Once the other arrived, the waitress made her way back over, and what she lacked in speed she made up for in intensity: I've never been involved in hostage negotiation, but this felt like that. When we ordered too much food and there wasn't a ton of room on the table at the booth we were sitting at, waitress took firm command and gave us directives about what needed to go where. It was a bit off putting, honestly. THE FOOD: in a word, great. 4 stars. Items hastily ordered: 1) the house egg rolls with herbs 2) vermicelli with pork 3) shrimp, small shiitake mushrooms, and green beans (this was an inadvertent order - there was a language barrier) 4) (belle of the ball) catfish simmered in a hotpot. All of it was good. The egg rolls were a bit swallowed up by the lettuce and herbage; I kind of lost the filling and the crunch of the wrapper. The vermicelli dish was just that. The shrimp and green beans were really good- the shrooms soaked up the sauce, a rich, complex, kind of velvety briny thickness that had some sugar to it (insistent waitress, I think, said it went really well with the catfish). The catfish (and I don't like catfish- bottom feeding, hole dwelling, muddy tasting at times) was spectacular. I'm not sure if it was swai, which would explain it, but the texture was delicate, the broth a pleasant punch of spicy; an exceptional February afternoon pick-me-up. All in all, this is more of a 3.75 star kind of place. 4 stars but for insistent waitress and the good but underwhelming egg rolls. Pho Bihn was a solid 4 star. 5 star was Saigon Le and a long-defunct place in Collierville next to where Hobby Lobby is (it was the Vietnamese version of Ja Ja's River Kwai off the town square). This is the greatest kept secret in Memphis!! And they have a long history in Memphis too! Their food is a work of art. They grow their own herbs for the dishes and is an amazing "farm to table"establishment. My husband and I can go there at any time of the day and there is someone there to happily make suggestions. I am so grateful Memphis has authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We travel across the Mississippi bridge weekly to eat here. My favorites are cold spring rolls with shrimp and pork, fried eggs rolls that come in batches of ten along with homegrown greens and herbs, vermicelli bowls....pretty much anything you can imagine.Also, since we live in Arkansas, it's such a treat to cross that bridge and not have to worry about paying to park or finding a place to park. First of all, if you read all of the negative reviews, and you only focus on those, you're going to miss out. Every new business has a bad day or two. This restaurant is run by Tuyen, one of the original Saigon Le family members. If you have ever been to the original restaurant, the food will be familiar to you. It is absolutely delicious. I have had their ginger chicken, I have had their vermicelli noodles with chargrilled pork and egg roll, the hot and sour chicken soup and vermicelli and their curried tofu. I ate every bite, and I will be back for any of these dishes again and again. Their signature dish is what's called the birds nest egg roll, and if you don't order it, you have officially messed up. Absolutely wonderful, just as I remember it from the original restaurant. The service is touch and go because they are shortstaffed, like most restaurants in the world right now. The restaurant is also popular and new which is why they are busy. Don't let that deter you. The food is always worth the wait, just be patient, chill your hangry vibes out, come prepared for a wait and leave your attitude in the car before you walk in. And here's a pro tip: you can always call in ahead of time and have your order ready for you when you get there, so you don't have to wait. If they're extremely busy, they will let you know. I'm from Hawaii now live in Clarksville, but we were in Memphis for the grizzlies and GSW game. And of course it was snowing. So we were craving pho and I haven't found a place I liked since we moved from Hawaii. But Tuyen's Asian bistro is a close contender. Food was good. Service was great. Yes, we took the owners previous advise and first stopped by the Asian grocery up the street to pick up plenty of herbs as once again their served herbs were sparse and few. But today the food was excellent! (I just felt funny unwrapping packages of herbs inside a restaurant?) like we needed to pass some around to the other patrons ~ Other good news - the A/C was working and the place was once again packed!
