I switched to another store after they kept making errors on standing orders, not informing me when a series would end or reboot, etc. I kept missing key issues in the various titles I was collecting and finally gave up. I also found the staff unfriendly and uninterested. I think they are mostly there for gamers and, therefore, comic collectors are not that important to their business. Just dropped by here today after hearing of it's recent opening from a friend. I'd generally been avoiding the area because of construction so I took some time out to swing by. Overall the store is looking promising. Staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. All the top games are acknowledged and I even found a few unknown gems. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the store feels a bit empty. I imagine this is done to keep the store less crowded during tournaments and events. Since they sell both comics and tabletop games I imagine they will be having a TON of events which I'll be attending. read more

Great store! Good selection of current comics, trades, games, and warmachine minis. Decent roleplaying game selection - D&D, Pathfinder, Shadowrun (Seattle!). Owner and staff know comics and keep on top of subscriptions and special orders. If you're looking for something and Phoenix doesn't have it in stock then they will help you find it. I moved my subs from The Dreaming in the U. District to here because it was more convenient and it's been great for me. Ive never written a review on yelp before, but this place was too good not to! The woman who helped me was so attentive and helpful- for every title I threw her way, she found it for me asap. If I wanted something they didnt have, she was quick to offer to order it. When she saw I was enthusiastic about a series, she asked what I liked about it! I know it was probably just the luxury of a slow day, but I really appreciated it. She's a great worker and I wish I still lived in the Seattle area so I could check it out more often. I love to begin summers with a stack of comics and I knew right where to go when school ended. Phoenix has an excellent collection of new titles and trade paperbacks; it's clear the owner has put a lot of thought into building the stock with quality titles. If you're new to comics, you could walk out with any of the trades and be rewarded with a good story. I picked up one tpb I'd read about, one I was familiar with, and a new title the owner (?) recommended. They were all great. The location is also incredibly convenient (right on Broadway). There isn't much in the window yet, so while it's easy to see from the road, I passed right by it on the sidewalk before I realized where it was. Anyways, It'll be cool to see how this shop develops its atmosphere and character. So stop in, and buy their comics! read more

I'm sad comics in general suck so hardcore right now, or I'd spend a lot more money here. Nice, efficient staff who are ready to help and recommend, coupled with a somewhat generic comic book shop look to it. Folding tables and chairs? Sigh. I love everything about Phoenix Comics and Games, from its location (smack-dab on the middle of the Hill), its friendly and knowledgeable staff, its big selection of merchandise and its comfortable seating areas. Phoenix's subscription system is fantastic - like many other comic shops, it has the usual pull-box system, However, Phoenix also has the excellent bonus of a discount that upgrades in percentage depending on how many titles you're subscribed to. This is really helpful for those of us subscribed to multiple titles who are picking up comics every week or two. The store also does Magic events (and has Core store status), making it my favorite place to play MtG on the Hill. The store is air conditioned very comfortably, which has been great for our recent hot days. It is not cluttered and cramped like other stores I've been in, and its large array of merchandise is well organized and easy to shop through. It also has a six large tables and lots of chairs, with four tables in the alcove in the back of the store and two up front by the windows. I've recently started running a tabletop game at the store and they've been awesome about letting me set up my small, 3-player game up front, away from the very loud Pathfinder game in the back. The staff is always flexible and nice, willing to do what they can to make sure the customer has a great experience. Great local store on Broadway near Capital Hill. I went here to draft for Friday Night Magic, and had a pleasant experience. The crowd is much older, around 21+, which is a big plus for me. I am rating this a 4-star because I have been to better stores. Nothing here is bad, but at the same time nothing here is extraordinary. If they upgraded their tables and chairs, and the play area as a whole, I would give it a 5-star review. There also is only one employee in the store, but the small size of the hobby shop allows for this. read more

I live very close to this location and after playing Magic Arena online I was hoping to get into the paper game. I have come to this store 4 times and never had a positive experience. The people behind the counter are rude and unhelpful. I have gone in here asking about magic, and trying to find a comic book. When I asked about the comic book the guy just pointed and said "Look somewhere over there". I still couldn't find it so I just walked out. When I asked about magic I was given short uninformitive answers, like I was wasting their time, even though the store was empty at the time. I want to spend money here, I want to play magic here. I have given them so many chances but at this point I dont even want to play paper if I would have to deal with people like this every friday night. read more

Needed a Secret Santa gift and I do not know the first thing about comics or card games. I was too lazy to go in so I called to ask if they had a specific game in stock. Not only did the nice man helping me take the time to check but he also spent about ten minutes explaining these games to me and which one my giftee might enjoy the most. While I decided to go with something different (I didn't buy the game from them), if I ever need anything like this in the future I will be giving them my business. It is not everyday someone is that polite and helpful over the phone. They really seem to care about their customers and I really appreciated the help. read more

What can I add to the vast and wonderful reviews already on here? The staff is knowledgeable and polite. There hasn't been a single comic I've mentioned that they have been unfamiliar with or unwilling to locate for me. They give opinions as well as suggestions when asked, and are usually spot on in both. The atmosphere is casual and elegant; welcoming and friendly to newcomers, but engaged and well-stocked for those more advanced hobbyists. Most of all, you will not be looked down upon when you come in here. If you are there for games or comics, the staff there is ready to assist. No question will be laughed at, no one is there to sneer or critique your choices. There is nothing negative about any experience I have had here. Whatever demographic you fit into, and, more importantly, whatever demographic you don't, this place is here to be your store. They don't have a lot of room for back issues, but they can usually get you the stuff you want within a week. If you live in the area, I highly suggest getting a pull-box. read more

Well it's good I guess. As good as any place like this can be. You see they sell beer which is nice and they have a nice selection but good god man, what is with all the stinky neck bearded hams? I know it comes with the territory but please people, fucking bathe before going out in public to play nerd games with your friends. Yeah, I play Pathfinder, yeah I'm a nerd, but I fucking bathe. I trim my beard. I brush my god damn teeth! For the love of Nurgle please please please clean your frothy beards before sitting five feet from me. The lady behind me the other night smelled like she didn't know toilet paper had been invented. I will try very hard to sit in a corner next time we come here for this reason. I'll be back, overall good place I guess, but the owner should probably put up a sign asking people to please bathe. Or better yet, if he walked around with a big cardboard thermometer he made and it says "Stink-O-Meter" on it, then when it's crowded he could walk around with it and when he gets up to a stinky guy or gal he could start making alarm noises with his mouth real loud and then say "WHOA FOLKS, WE GOT A STINKER HERE!" If I ever die, I want to be buried in Phoenix Comics and Games. If I'm going to be dead, I may as well not be bored, and there is no danger of that here. The great thing about Phoenix is that it's growing, and you can see that very easily right before your eyes - the store caters to a lot of flavors of nerd, and it has tables and air conditioning for people to congregate at (on Mondays it shows, for tabletops and Magic alike). Merchandise is flowing in and every time I go in, there's something new - the terrible thing for my wallet is that it's always something I WANT. I have yet to see filler stock at Phoenix - everything there is something that I could want, and that means, very likely, you're going to find something here that you want to take home with you. And if you don't? They'll TRY. That's what I like. The location is just fantastic, next to restaurants and bus stops a-gogo, so it is stupidly easy to get here. I say this as an extremely lazy person that doesn't like going anywhere if it takes any amount of effort. The staff is so flexible that I thought this was called Twister Comics and Games for a second - they will twist themselves into PRETZELS, HUMAN PRETZELS, to make sure you're satisfied and having fun. All in all, it is easily one of the must-try places on the Hill if you're a nerd. Give it a try! read more

Phoenix Comics and Games is such a wonderful addition to Capitol Hill. The store is very well laid out, with a great staff that is both friendly and helpful. I don't play the card and table top games that they offer, but I've been in during their game nights and it's a great space for those who do game. The guy working there today (august 3rd) later in the day was kinda rude, really stand-offish and handled my comics roughly as if I was bothering him even though the store was pretty much empty and he wasn't doing anything when I came in. That employee hasn't been here the other times I've come in but other than him I've had good experiences here and the regular staff have been awesome. Phoenix Comics and Games doesn't look like much from the street, but once you enter, you're surrounded by great comics and games. I went in there with my girlfriend looking for a new board game that just came out. They were sold out of it, but kindly took my name down to get ahold of me when they get it in. We ended up picking up Outcast by Robert Kirkman and read through the whole thing later that night. I look forward to going back and checking out more of the comics! read more

Phoenix Comics and Games just opened on Free Comic Book Day and they're looking to be quite the excellent comic book shop. The store is well lit, clean, and organized. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The stock is a nice mix of mainstream and lesser known comics and games. been to old location, and found them helpful and nice. rather small. Im a gme player not a comic guy. My only complaint is the confusion between this place and the original Phoenix games in Mukilteo. Why these guys copied their name is beyond me. They are not related at all and both serve their respected markets well. So if your looking for board games and game night goto mukiteo. If you want comics goto capitol hill. Also capitol hill has different clientele then mukilteo. both are fine just saying you may prefer one over the other. to each their own. read more

my suspicions as a 14 year old were right on. i would one day frequent a comic book store in my adulthood to compensate for an adolescence made of borrowed manga, comic book volumes checked out in libraries, and countless attempts at Googling for scanned prints I couldn't otherwise find by ordinary means. i'd always imagined that comic book stores as intentional as they could be, exorcised ambivalence. generally, i really admire people capable of loving something with passion to its extremities. i've always thought of the space between the post office and Dick's Burgers as a death pit for businesses. at best, the store fronts beforehand served as visual candy for passersby full of milkshakes, french fries, and mail. I think it was a smart move for Phoenix Comics and Games given the amount of oncoming traffic from the trolley and the lightrail (when it eventually opens up). when i found that Elliott Bay Bookstore did not have the supply of Ms. Marvel comics I was hoping to acquire, I went to PCG after the suggestion of an Elliot Bay aide there who was able to find copies. i was not disappointed. PCG had Ms. Marvel copies, not all of them, but enough, and Saga too! (ALSO, have I been living a under a rock underneath a bigger rock(!!?)- because apparently Neil Gaiman came out with The Sandman Overture's 1, 2, 3 and i'm just now learning about it- (guhhh)) overall, i had a pleasant experience- i got what i wanted, found out about more things i want, and met some great people with great customer service. -is the lack of seating space intentional? i felt like reading more comix and wanted to make myself comfortable, granted that i could do so (IDK anything about comic shop decorum so i'll have to ask later abt it- i swear my hands aren't grubby) read more

I finally checked out Phoenix after meaning to go there for ages, as I'm not often in Capitol Hill. For the most part, it's got all you would want from a comics shop: lots of new stuff, almost all the Marvel and DC you could want, an ample selection of both board and tabletop RPG games, and a decent array of indie and local titles. I was particularly impressed with the layout -- this is a very slick, clean shop with everything easily laid out where it's no trouble to find what you're looking for. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, even when I had a weird request; they obviously put a lot of work into making the store look good. My main complaint is a common one with comic shops: the selection of old single-issues was very limited, with just a few longboxes on display. Other than that, a very good comics and gaming shop, without the creepy dingy vibe you often get. Recommended if you're in the neighborhood. read more
