Their food comes out so fast. It's a really great HK cafe style experience. Their food is pretty standard fair but it's solid for the fast food quality. Price is pretty reasonable too, especially if you get breakfast or a set.

A HK cafe that has been a staple restaurant in this area for a while now. Was suggested to come here from my family so decided to pay them a visit again. Even during a snow storm, there was a line and wait to get a table during peak lunch hours on a weekend - a good sign! Service is quick and food comes out fast. Some hit or miss dishes though: Club sandwich 3/5 - Usually love club sandwiches but was thrown off with this one since it came with beef instead. Bread was nice and buttered, and the egg was fluffy. Would be better if this was made with another protein instead. Bittermelon spareribs rice 3.5/5 - A pretty standard dish that isn't too bad here. Lemon tea 4/5 - A HK cafe staple. They do it pretty okay here so no complaints. Haianese chicken rice 4/5 - What this restaurant is best known for. The chicken was silky and soft. Rice was seasoned and delicious. Would get this again! Fried octopus 4/5 - A great dish to share with the table. Nicely battered and crispy with a slight chew to the octapus. Overall, a good dining experience but I'm not dying to come back asap.
Located just by Woodbine and Steeles. This place is smaller than the other location but lots of seats. They were pretty full without a line up and my friend and I were able to get a seat right away. They have a promotion everyday buy two 30% off for lunch and dinner had a promotion too but I forgot to check it out. It comes with a drink as well. I got hot HK style milk tea and my friend got the cold milk tea. The pad thai is definitely very good and one of the best ones I've tasted. There is a mild spice and very tolerable for me as someone who can't handle spicy chips. The chicken rice dish was really good too, the honey garlic was very light in my opinion. The flavour wasn't overpowering. Rice was a lot less but came with a lot of chicken. I want to come here again for sure!
It's decent Hong Kong style food. The price is good and the portions are fairly generous. I tried the satay vermicelli beef noodles which also comes with a drink and a piece of bread for about $11. Do note that the noodles are a bit spicy. This place does get quite busy and service can be below average.
My first time to this restaurant (chain?). A no frills dining experience but looks quite clean. I ordered take away Hainanese Chicken/Rice and cold HK style milk coffee. The chicken was not great, it was not velvety smooth as it should be - there was a little too much 'chew', like a frozen chicken that's been over cooked or simply an older hen(?), but the rice was flavourful. The side sauces were nothing to write home about, but good enough for a no nonsense two star rating.
Awesome Meal-for-2 Deal. Check this out! Any two items under the special limited-time menu for $25.88 (+ tax & tips). Pick TWO drinks from red bean ice, grass jelly ice drink, coffee, or tea. Any day after 4 PM. Cash only. The red bean ice drink was a little bland. Not sweet enough with not much vanilla or milk flavor. Not much taste with the red bean too. Good freshness with some chewy texture though. Some other drinks might taste better. On the other hand, the food was good and we ordered 2x 2-deals. Among the four items we ordered, the Singapore Fried Vermicelli stood out pretty clearly. The curry spiciness was there yet not overpowering the rest of the dish. Nice veggies and shrimp. I like the vermicelli texture. Not oily at all. Try it out if you visit there. It doesn't say the deal till what date. Limited time offer. Visit there while it lasts. Woodbine location only at this point. McCowan is still under renovation. People said it would probably reopen in a week. Reasonably tasty, inexpensive, and recommended!
Decided to be a little adventurous, chain type restaurants tend to be a hit or a miss. Nicely decorated casual modern cha chaan teng place. Normal cha chang teng menu but they also had a special 2 for dinner menu at a great inflation busting price with plenty of dish choices to pick from and a free drink is included Went with the Fish fillet with pickled mustard cabbage in fish broth & yunan vermicelli. Yeah, the dish name is long but it exactly described the dish. Surprisely the fish chunks were very large and paired well with the crunchy preserved vegs/broth. Soup had a slight mild mala spice flavor causing a slight tingly numbness in my mouth full of soup noodles.. 2nd dish was the Steak with onion paste in rice bowl, steak was braised and tender with a mild onion flavor on a bed of white rice in a bowl. Staff very friendly and efficient. Very happy with their 2 for dinner special, good value for your money, however, I noticed many diners ordering the regular entrees which looks large and delicious. This restaurant is a good representation and carries on the reputation of Chinese restaurants, their prices are reasonable, large food portions leads to getting a doggie bag so leftovers can be stretched to another meal, don't expect large tips and staff are friendly. Although majority of staff and customers speak Chinese, don't let that intimidate you, menus most of the time are in English with photos and there's usual a few staff that can speak broken English.

They recently offered the two can dine set for $25.88 cash only. There's a list of things to pick from and also include a red bean icecream drink or other drinks of the same price. We opted for a steak with onion sauce rice and a Japanese style pork cutlet rice. I forgot to take a picture of the menu but the food came out to be a bit different from the picture. The steak with onion sauce rice tasted a bit too sweet to me. It's kinda like teriyaki sauce. However the steak (slices on pictures but cubed in reality) was tender. As for the pork cutlet rice, the rice to pork chop ratio wasn't ideal, too much rice, too little sauce, also on the sweeter side but the pork chop is juicy and tender. And there seem to be two sunny side up eggs on the picture but it's not in reality. We ordered cold milk tea as our drinks and it tasted more milky than we remembered. Overall decent deal. Food could be better. Service was fair. Chairs could be cleaner.
If you're looking for Hong Kong style comfort food, this is the place. We went on a weekend and waited about 20 minutes for a table. Because it was so busy, the staff looked very rushed and a bit flustered. I know service is usually very quick but that day we went, we noticed everyone getting their food before us. We had to ask our server a few times to check on our order. It was quite loud and crowded, but that's typical HK cafe. I ordered combo set Y10 baked pork chop on rice (Japanese style) with hot milk tea and it tasted great and the milk tea was nice and strong!

SERVICE Fast and efficient - the wait staff order on mobile devices and food comes and you go fairly quickly. It's good for what it is, and while it worked for me in English, it appeared to work well in Cantonese and Mandarin also. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's in the street-facing end of a light industrial / commercial strip mall. Once you get in the front door, folks with baby strollers and wheelchairs could fit well - be it in a small or large group. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall's lot.
Okay, this might be my new go-to! Since my place at 407/Bayview closed, I've been lost. Where to eat HK style breakfast? Luckily, there is another Phoenix location close by. And it's pretty similar to my usual haunt! I hope they don't modernize and change their menu!
Unlike my experience with the Pheonix Restaurant downtown Toronto a few years ago, this branch in Markham was a let down. Service was fast, but there was a language barrier. The server thought I was ordering double of everything, but I had to explain to her.... no!! As for the food... the iced lemon tea was good, and the veggie dish was good too. But the hainanese chicken rice dish was not. The broth was crazy peppery. I love pepper, but even that was too much in the broth. The chicken itself was good, but the rice was not. If you see in the pic, the outer part was yellow, but the middle part was white. Clearly they used white (albeit stale) rice and then drenched the chicken oil on top. Hainanese chicken rice should be fragrant, but this was not. The search for a decent hainanese chicken rice continues.....
Happened to be in Markham and my friend recommended trying Cantonese food since there are so many good options in the area. We came here on a Wednesday night, and the place was pretty crowded. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and they served tea at the table, which I really liked. We were a party of four and shared four dishes. We started with the pineapple bun filled with satay beef, the beef inside was very tender and flavorful. We also ordered the Singapore-style fried vermicelli, which came with BBQ pork, shrimp, and vegetables. Another dish we tried was the fried noodle with bean sprouts and beef in soya sauce, and this ended up being my favorite. The noodles were well seasoned, and adding chili oil really took it to the next level. For dessert, we got the black sesame French toast with golden syrup. I'm a big fan of HK-style French toast, and this one did not disappoint. The syrup wasn't overly sweet, and the black sesame flavor came through nicely. Their menu is huge and has a wide variety of dishes and plenty of Hong Kong comfort food classics to choose from. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable, making it a great spot for sharing dishes with friends or family. I'd definitely come back to try more items on their menu, though it's a bit inconvenient to get to without a car. read more
Phoenix is a HK cafe with a couple locations. This was my first time at the Woodbine one. We went for lunch on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. They had a lunch special on the menu that comes to about $15/pp and includes a drink. The default is a red bean float but you can replace it with another drink of a similar value. I opted for the milk tea which was really nice and smooth! For my meal, I got the meat sauce spaghetti. It's a hugeee portion but the spaghetti to sauce ratio was off. There was a ton of spaghetti but not enough sauce. :(. read more
I haven't been to Pheonix Restaurant in a very long time. The last time I went was when they still had a store at Bridletowne in Scarborough. So I was excited to try their menu. Ambiance - 4/5: a medium sized place with lots of seats and tables. It's in a plaza with a medical building. The parking spots are designed to be slanted so if you're not used to it, it is a little weird to park. Service - 4/5: we were seated quickly. The menu was extensive so it took awhile for us to decide. They checked up on us a few times. And cleared the table at the end. Food - 4/5: we ordered 3 combo sets - baked Japanese chicken steak on rice, AAA steak with onion paste in rice bowl - comes with a sunnyside up egg, pad thai, lemon tea and cold milk tea. We shared all 3 dishes. The pad thai was surprisingly spicy but it was good. The other 2 dishes is good as well. I just find both dishes to be on the sweeter end. I really enjoyed the milk tea. It was smooth and perfectly balanced. Overall: 4/5 - I would come back with friends. I don't mind trying other options on their menu read more

Have come here a couple of times over the years, a huge selection of different dishes from rice to noodles to snacks. I've tried a variety of their baked dishes from pork chops to chicken cutlets. However, I've always found their food to be pretty average. I recently tried the dish pictured - fried rice with (duck? I think). The portion sizes are good and the prices are decent but the food I've always found is remarkably average. Haven't gone back in a while and haven't missed it. Not a terrible spot for a HK cafe but I don't love it myself. read more
Visited this location on a super early Sunday morning right at opening at 8am. Group of four of us ordered 7 breakfast items. We were hungry ! During breakfast only their breakfast menu is available. From the choices, it was mainly sandwiches, noodle/macaroni in soup type dishes available. That's fine but wanted to put this information there for folks who might see the whole menu thinking they they can order all this. I have included their breakfast menu for you to see. Service was good, and you can order thru the waiter or there are QR codes and you enter in your table number. I would return, but price for what you are paying may be slightly higher due to inflation and shrinkflation. read more

A solid local HK cafe/restaurant that hits the spot. Pandemic wise, they are very incredibly cautious which I appreciate. Portions are huge, my fried rice was delicious and lucky for me, I have enough left over for two additional lunches. Highly recommend. read more
One of my go-to's for HK Cafe style food. I would say everythings OK, maybe a tad on a the pricier side for this kind of food. But the place is tidy, and service fast. This time, I got the Red Curry Chicken Steak on rice. Creamy, coconut milk based (I think) curry sauce over a big dish of lightly fried rice. Tasty, and big portioned. The Iced HK Milk Tea is pretty good, but you have to add $1.50 for a cold drink, and it's not a big cup. But they chill it in the glass, so there's no extra ice/dilution. read more

The Phoenix Birtchmount restaurant was a nice go to place not far where we lived for some Asian breakfast or brunch. However, I guess due to the pandemic, this one was closed. We did find another one near Highway 7 on Woodbine. It is much smaller and a bit disorderly since they sectioned off part of the front restaurant for takeouts and social distancing which they followed with QR code validation and temperature checks. Having just missed breakfast due to the extra time to get here, we decided on early lunch which we can order from their assortment of choices. One thing this place has a quick service and like the other that closed down, the meals were delicious. For a quick bite this didn't disappoint. $-$$ read more

Conveniently located near the Courtyard Marriott in Markham with a nice full menu of Hong Kong favorites, though not the best you'll find in the area. I really enjoy coming here for the quality desserts like the mango ice cream bubble waffle with a nice refined level of sweetness and good egg flavor, presented nicely with chocolate syrup and mango. The red bean ice is also creamy and delicious as was the sesame milk shake. In terms of cooked dishes, the stir fried ones are definitely better than the baked dishes, in particular I enjoyed the black sesame, egg white, and shrimp fried rice. Excellent wok hay all around with the egg white perfectly encapsulating the rice grains and seared nicely for extra flavor. The pork chop dishes are also excellent as well with a nice level of fattiness to the cut and very tender perfectly cooked juicy meat. Overall, other options I tried were solid and this is very good for restaurants I've found near a hotel. Good choice if you're staying at the Courtyard Marriot. read more

I was in the area and had a sudden craving for hainanese chicken so of course, I made my bf take me here! My all-time favourite place for hainanese chicken... why it gotta be so far from me though Lol. We came around 5 PM on a Sunday evening and it was not busy at all - probably 2 or 3 customers waiting for their orders already so we placed our order right away: 2 x hainanese chicken! We got our order VERY quick, we waited for not even 10 minutes. The chicken was tender and SO!! juicy, it literally fell right off the bone! The oil and sauce obviously made the chicken even more delicious and the soup had a light ginger taste to it that was perfect to end off our meal with. I wish the chicken rice dish came with some more greens though, as the portion was very big but we only got a couple pieces of cucumber and lettuce. Affordable, delicious and quick - you can't go wrong with that! Definitely recommend and can't wait to come back!! Note: still no dine-in available even during phase 3 - take-out only. They had a whole set-up for take out to enforce social distancing with tables set up for guests for a one-way line up, glass at the tables separating the workers from customers, arrows pointing where to go and hand sanitizer available right as you walk in. Super surprising at a Chinese diner but obviously very good as we felt very safe! read more

Food is decent but every since pandemic started and food is only takeout, the overall quality has been very bad. Ordered breakfast meal over the phone that comes with a drink, chose hot milk tea no sugar. Picked up the food, and guess what? There's sugar in my milk tea. Butter toast with condense milk is part of the meal. No condense milk on the toast. Food was not hot, soup was separate from the macaroni which I appreciate, overall was warm. Suppose to have a 10% if cash was paid. I paid cash but no discount applied The only thing that was right, charging me full price when I pod cash. read more
After visiting Vancouver, I realized how much cheaper our food is in Toronto. Especially HK style cafe. With various locations across the GTA, I visit the Woodbine store most often as is right on the highway exit. Love the breakfast set, only $7.75 which includes a HK milk tea, satay beef noodle and condensed milk toast. Highly recommended. read more

Phoenix is one of our go to restaurants every time we visit. This trip we went for breakfast and dinner. Service was great. They let us make a reservation for dinner time because we had a large party. read more
Hong Kong Style Cafe restaurants are and few between. While shrinkflation may be ongoing, Phoenix Restaurant maintains good value for volume of food. I got the Pork Chop and Cheese on rice accompanied by a mix of tomato and cream sauce. It's an interesting take on the classic Ying yang fried rice which you don't typically find on the HK style cafe menu. As with all establishments of this variety, keep your expectations low when it comes to table service but know your food will come out fast and tasty. read more
I've never actually eaten at this location before so maybe it was because the service is generally good or maybe it was due to the fact that we showed up at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. The restuarant was half empty and we were immediately seated at a table for 2 with menus, utensils and tea. The waitress came by 5 minutes later upon making eye contact and we ordered 2 x Hainanese Chicken Rice and 2 x Yuanyang (Half Coffee, Half Tea). Our drinks and dishes were at our table within 10 minutes of ordering. The food was good, the service was good. I have no complaints for my first time at this location. read more

Their food might not be the greatest however it's a place where you can get your food quickly and there are plenty of seating. For example, their tomato sauce was lacking flavor and the pork chop was a bit greasy. I feel like there is room of improvement for their customer service. Most of their combo comes with a drink either coffee or milk tea. Came here a couple of times, and everytime I need to go up to their staff to ask for my sweetener. Overall, I have a neutral experience with this restaurant. read more

Phoenix Restaurant might be a little boring for some. For me I find it is A-OK as there will never be any surprises and I always get good services and decent food. Menu has not changed and the selections are the same as the other 2 locations. I can tell you even the fish soup noodles I ordered tasted identical to the other locations. Boring......but reliable.... That make Phoenix a good choice for me when I don't feel like being adventurous and just want a quick bite! read more

I love Phoenix! It's one of those pricier Chinese diners, but I think the price is reflected in the higher quality of the food. The service is quick and the food comes out quickly enough. I have several favourites here that I always order: Singaporean Chicken Rice (the chicken is so tender!), Malaysian curry (the sauce is to die for!), pork chop bun, fish fillet bun, and various baked rice (like the baked bacon gravy pork chop rice). I'm not a fan of their Hong Kong style spaghetti, however. They have pretty interesting desserts too. I like their fruity take on the panna cotta, but it always sells out. I've also tried their ice cream crepes, ice cream toast, and ice cream napoleon. They're all pretty good. read more
