Fabulous music great venue and always new entertaining and a good variety of talent that visits our Phoenix Symphony.

Overall the venue is very nice. its a good place for dates and a good place for unique local events. As far as the actual symphony goes they are second to none in any other major city. The only downfall I can consider is whoever chooses the musical selections and sets the schedule. I'd love to see some fresh events with guests people have actually heard of and a change from the normal selections you can find anywhere. Sometimes it can remind you why people find the symphony boring. It bothers me as the orchestra is so talented and there potential should go noticed! read more

Attended the Steve Lippia concert last night. Steve and the symphony were fantastic. Can't wait to attend another concert.

We visited from out of town (Detroit) where we have an excellent symphony. I still think Detroit is a higher level but this was a great event and so much fun. The guest conductor was fantastic and made it a fun evening. It was movie and TV blockbusters and the entire event was enjoyable and great for our young teens. Friendly ushers and a nice venue with comfortable seating. read more

I sent the attached content in an email to the Phoenix Symphony public relations department after box office manager Amanda Citrowske promised me she would have her boss Todd Vigil call me back and he never did. I never received a response to my email. This is not over. Greetings, I purchased tickets for your event on September 15 and accidentally purchased one ticket too many. Your site had me select which seats I wanted and I guess my finger was too large for the little dots that represented seats and it added an extra seat in error. This happened Friday afternoon and I only noticed the error when I reviewed the email confirmation you sent me. Today being the following business day, I called the box office to fix it and was shocked when I was refused a refund by your box office manager Amanda. I used your website in good faith to purchase tickets and feel that the ticket selection process was glitchy and deceptive and unnecessarily cumbersome. The mobile version of the website is poorly designed in this regard and it essentially robbed me. Amanda offered to credit me for the ticket or said I could also "donate" the extra ticket. This is not an acceptable resolution. I want my money back for the extra seat. I have reached out to you in a timely fashion about tickets for an event that does not happen for FOUR WEEKS and it is not smart business or good customer service for you to keep my money and tell me to shove off. My order number is 1714097. I still want to keep my two seats together so if you just refund either seat 19 or seat 21 that would beI great. My family and friends attend your events regularly and I think it would make a lot more sense for your organization to do the right thing and help me than it would for you to convince me that you are unreasonable and do not value your customers. Yesterday's performance was outstanding! The programming was brilliant and the quality of the music was stellar. The Beethoven Ninth is a glorious piece of music but is performed often and could be challenging to keep fresh. But Maestro Munoz did just that -- it was beautifully interpreted and masterfully played and sung. The entire 2020-2021 Season was canceled due to COVID. The Phoenix Symphony demanded that I donate the fee we paid for our season tickets to them and REFUSED to refund our season tickets although I have told them that forwarding our tickets to the 2021-2022 season is not an option for us due to terminal illness in our family. I was told by the customer service agent that "a supervisor will call me to discuss the issue". Needless to say I have not heard from a supervisor. read more

I had purchased tickets for a show in March. The show was canceled and I had contacted the symphony in April. I was told the refund would take about 6-8 weeks. I contacted them in June and July. Was told refunds were taking longer due to Covid 19.Today I received an email that my money had been donated to the Symphony. I again called/ sent emails to no avail. What a scam! read more

I have been to 4 shows this season now and everyone has been better than the last! I did honestly think I would be bored with the symphony but that was not the case! They have an amazing line up of unexpected entertainment. From Jason Alexander, Human Nature, and ABBA to "a night at the Oscars," each show was unique, entertaining, and full of wonderful musicians. I have sat on the main floor and in the balcony and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Next season has posted and looks just as amazing. I am absolutely hooked! read more

If you understand the differences between absolute and program music and can deliver a dissertation on Baroque, Classical, and Renaissance styles then good for you. Drop me an email because some of it is completely over my head and skip this review because it's not for you. If your looking for something different, a brief respite to rip you away from the grind and let your mind wander formlessly amid the music then check out the symphony. Despite popular belief there is no formal dress code however you might find a favorable response from your fellow patrons if you wear a shirt and shoes after all this is the symphony not the South. Though some people wear jeans you may feel more comfortable in a pair of slacks or casual business attire but ultimately who cares you paid for a ticket just like everyone else. Largely, the only complaint I can muster are the somewhat cramped seats in Phoenix Symphony Hall. Intermissions usually offer a coffee and cocktail bars. Also make sure and arrive slightly early, while they might not care about how you're dressed, etc. I promise you they absolutely will not let you to the hall after the doors close, you will be stuck in the lobby until the intermission. Downtown Phoenix and the other symphony venues also offer a variety of wonderful places to dine before or after the performance. The Verdi Requiem was absolutely fabulous!! I know this musical piece and it is one of my favorites. There were approximately 200 musicians performing last night and they did a wonderful job. I hope they present this magnificent work again soon. read more

Growing up in NY I had Lincoln Center and in AZ we have The Phoenix Symphony which is phenomenal!!! Such an amazing group of talented musicians! We have seen many many shows here and they are always super. The acoustics are great, there is not a bad seat in the house and even the concessions are reasonable. Taking light rail from Tempe is a breeze as it drops you within a .2 mile distance from Symphony Hall, so you dont have to deal with parking! Many places to eat before or after the show as well. read more

Very disappointed in Star Wars Symphony. Paid $90 a seat for good seats and could only see violins in front row. I took my son who is a trumpet player and never saw one trumpet. They need a screen showing overview of other performers. Felt like I was paying to see Star Wars movie not musicians. Poor concession stands with long lines and only one server. Nothing to eat but bags of gummy worms & marshmallows and waiting in line 15 mins at intermission to find out that they were sold out. Needless to say nothing to snack on and we came right from work. Gave it 3 stars because Symphony sounded amazing but would rather pay to SEE Symphony than movie. They need to show all the instruments and performers on a screen since that is why we went. read more

Attended last night at Symphony Hall and enjoyed it very much. I have heard this orchestra several times over the past 2 years and they are very good! Last night was Bernstein with a violin soloist and the a Sibelius Symphony. Both were performed well. I did have trouble deciding who was over acting. The soloist or the concert master? Their body movements were way too much. I get it with the soloist but should not see that in the principle. We are fortunate to have such a fine orchestra here on Phoenix. read more

We attended a great event on Saturday for Dios de la Muerta with tons of great Hispanic Music, dancers and puppets. The event was family friendly and very well put together. there's not a bad seat in the house and the ushers were VERY helpful. all in all, great experience! read more

Just saw the Harry Potter Symphony and unfortunately it was not a Harry Potter Symphony. False advertisement. They only played a handful of songs from the movie, they didn't show any movie scenes to go along with the music, they had a mediocre magician perform in between songs who promised a behind the scenes performance (which never happened) and a whole bunch of songs that were not from the movie. Meanwhile the ad is of Harry Potter casting a spell and that is not what we saw. Also the music was good, but the musicians did not seem to be enjoying themselves. Not worth the ticket price. read more

Absolutely love attending shows here. We go to the Holiday Pops every holiday season and are blown away by the guest singers and the music line up. We attend other shows and highly recommend the Nightmare Before Christmas play along. It's such a great idea because they stream the movie while the symphony plays the music. Such a cool thing and really brings the movie to life. I'm confident we will become members in the new year. Music is truly the best thing to bring everyone together. read more

We have had season tickets to the Pops series for three years now. We love us our music! Last night we saw again the wonderful jim Witter who did a tribute to one of my favs of all times, Simon and Garfunkle. ( I know every word to every song they ever wrote. Yes I know nerd alert here) JW usually does a Billy Joel and Elton John tribute. Ha! Last year I even got to sing and dance on stage to Crocodile Rock. Na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na! Don't ask, but life goal number 1 completed! LOL! Well as far as last night goes, all I can say is that we were rocking the place. ( Well ok as far as one can rock out to Simon and Garfunkle) I am sure the conductor was cringing at how rowdy the third row was. Teeehhhee! We were jamming out to the music. ( Yes sorry handsome conductor man. I know it is the Symphony and probably made you cringe with all that classical training in the house. Then the NY, Alice Cooper gang hooligan types came in-hahaha thus why I like the Pops more than the classical. I will go to classical shows too so really I am just kidding. However. I do love the pops so much more. I know, I know, I feel like "Just Jack" from Will and Grace. I love me my musical theater and showtunes, Gleek here. Last year I even got to see my all time musical theater hero diva perform, Patti Lupone. SIGH! Got to meet her after the show too. Thanks Phoenix Symphony for that photo op! (Life goal number two, check!) Advice, now if you could only get Mandy I would truly be in heaven. ( Life goal check number 3 perhaps?) However, I do went to point out they do have something for everyone with an eclectic yearly calendar of different musical genres. I do worry about cultural Arts programs and budget cuts in Az so hope people continue to support them in any fashion. I know it is not NY or London but it's still good! I also love it when I see the young set being introduced to the Symphony. We sat next to a delightful 13 year old young man last night. He was rocking out with us. ( Ok Dad listens to S/G in the car every day. But at least the boy didn't appear to be having his teeth pulled out by being there) So to all of my fellow music lovers, check it out, support local Arts, and enjoy! Oh an afterthought- The person who sings with Jim ( can't remember his name) does the meanest, most awesome, best impression of Edith Bunker ever. I have no idea how a man can even hit a high note like that. If you ever have the chance to see him do this I would strongly advise you to do so. It is so fun! read more

The performance was excellent. The musicians were well-skilled, and as I watched them I was able to clearly see that they all HIGHLY enjoyed their job. My favorite person to watch was the 1st violinist who always looked intent on his work while maintaining a small smile of pure joy as they played the beautiful "An American in Paris". I went to order tickets to see the Halloween at Hogwarts concert online but would not allow me to buy three tickets next to each other when there was also a fourth seat available, saying i was not permitted to leave one seat available. I then called the box office to order my tickets that way instead. After a very brief hold, the operator helped me through setting up a profile and ordering my three tickets through her, bypassing the online block. She was extremely helpful, quick and professional. I'm very excited to attend the show! read more

Was extremely happy to come watch Beethoven's symphony number nine with my physically disabled father. He is a 6'9 man who uses a walker to get around. He specifically called the box office to place an order for disabled access seats. When we got to the venue this was NOT the case. They had him sitting three rows down of stairs which was IMPOSSIBLE due to him needing his walker. Mind you there were TWO open seats that would have worked for us right there but the usher declined to let us sit there. So... we eventually swap tickets only to find out they're on the complete other side of where we originated. This was very difficult for him. Then we get to the next seats they again were three rows down. THEN we finally get someone to help ya out with proper seating, only to have the person sitting next to me scoff at both my father and I. I loved the music, but I extremely disappointed at our treatment (or lack there of). Our money is just as good as anyone else's and I would also like to point out that my father drove 3 hours one way to attend this event. All In all buyer beware if someone sells you a "handicapped seat." The emotions of sorrow and physical pain that we both experienced due to this mix up cannot be ratified. read more

We saw the orchestra perform the score to STAR WARS Empire Strikes Back. It was one of the coolest entertainment experiences I have ever had. So powerful to hear the live music and see the movie in a new light as well. It is the perfect way to really experience how music enhances and creates emotions of every kind. I would highly recommend this to families, children--anyone who wants to hear and see something unique and wonderful! read more

So heartbroken! I used to participate in ASU's Choral Union who used to perform with the Phoenix Symphony long ago. My last time there was when I was pregnant with my son and had the privilege of performing in the chorus about 20 years ago. Being a family of music-lovers and audiophiles, I had chosen to bring my son and husband to the Phoenix Symphony Pops tribute to Broadway musicals since we are familiar with musicals and I thought we all would enjoy it. We have been to many rock concerts, but most of all, I could introduce my son to the amazing world of a live symphony! We even listened to the songs that were going to be performed at the concert ahead of time so that we could really recognize and enjoy the music! Unfortunately, the sound quality was REALLY bad! Not sure if it was the location of our seats? We were centrally located on the main floor in the second section in row 25. This section had the ceiling from the balcony over it rather than being opened up to the high ceiling. The volume of the orchestra was muffled. The vocalists - although they had great voices - were on microphones which came out of the numerous speakers lined up on the ceiling in front of us. The singers' voices were shrill and actually hurt our ears! And it was a strain to hear the orchestra! We were surprised that the vocalists were mic'd in the first place since most vocalists from the broadway musical world are trained to project their voices into large auditoriums. One of the female singers in particular held the microphone too close to her mouth during higher and louder parts of the songs as if she did not know proper microphone etiquette! The very first song from Phantom of the Opera should have caused goosebumps, but it was quite "flaccid" and anti-climatic. Probably shouldn't attempt that song unless you have a pipe organ. Technically, the musicians did a good job, but again, the sound mix was off and way out of balance. We came to hear the orchestra more than the singers. The MC introduced the songs in an interesting way yet loosely connected them all since it was an odd mix of songs in the first place. He made jokes almost under his breath and we couldn't hear them. The pianist's performance of My Favorite Things was fantastic - well played as he was obviously an accomplished pianist. It was also a relief since there were no vocals to dominate the entire sound. After Intermission, the sound improved a bit as if the sound board guys caught on to the poor sound mix. And the one vocalist got better about pulling her mic away during louder and higher parts of her songs. However when one song involved the pianist chiming in vocally, his microphone was not engaged and the MC quickly stepped over and shared his own mic with him until the sound guys caught up. The choices of the songs were ... interesting. We would have preferred that at least one if not two of the three songs from Wicked be omitted and that some of the many other amazing songs from musicals over time be included instead. But having a husband who has worked a sound board on the side, and a son who has received schooling in sound recording come to this performance to experience the poor mixing and lousy sound quality at this concert (which cost us $60 per seat!) really came as a surprise and disappointment to all three of us! Furthermore, at the end we were informed that we were the first time they had done this performance nationwide, and we were the guinea pigs. Our tickets should have been discounted if we were getting to experience a dress rehearsal! Finally, we had the joy of having to tolerate some drunk older man behind us who kept humming and singing along and making commentary throughout the concert. This was not a rock concert! This was the symphony! We had to ask him to please be quiet during the performance. But by then we were already irritated at how rinky-dink and poorly planned the concert seemed, and we had already waited through almost the whole concert hoping that an usher would escort this guy out. It was the last "nail in the coffin," especially for my 20 year old son who basically called this concert a "bust" and said he "saw no reason to ever set foot in Symphony Hall ever again." The irony of hoping to expose and open a new generation up to the symphony only to have something like the poor sound mix destroy it altogether is what is truly heartbreaking to us! We paid too much of our hard-earned money and took the time to drive up to downtown Phoenix to battle the road closure and horrible traffic to have such an unprofessional treatment of what should have sounded absolutely amazing. What a flop! Don't waste your time and money on this low-budget, end-of-the-season-exhaustion "experiment!" read more

The Tom Petty concert was very very good. The orchestra was great but the singer of the Tom Petty songs sounded like an adolescent Tom Petty. He seem to not even know the words to some songs and came in at the wrong times on others. He did not do Tom Petty Justice nor the orchestra who backed him. The Phoenix Symphony is full of good musicians. I doubt they are given the time they need to really prepare the music with over 200 gigs a year. As a musician myself I can hear it in their performances. You can kind of tell the pieces they spend time on and the ones that are "one and done" in rehearsal. I understand why, the costs are so huge to get everyone together, but it is still sad. HUGE problem with the Phoenix audiences. I have never heard so many people talking during a performance in my life as I did the one time I was in the balcony. Wanted to scream... And no it wasn't kids, it was adults that should have known better. read more

The conductor, Tito Munoz, is wonderful - expressive, passionate - and the orchestra itself has an incredible sound and tackles challenging, varied programs. Attended dress rehearsal for Maestro John Williams leading the Phoenix Symphony in advance of the concert tonight with Steven Spielberg. It was 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning for the rehearsal and the PS staff and ushers were dressed up, courteous and professional. Plus, on the way existing the concert hall, two ushers thanked me for attending "the rehearsal." Great service all the way around. Wish I was attending the concert tonight. Awesome experience and always love attending the Phoenix Symphony. Thanks too, to Maestro Williams. read more
