I've gotten several items custom framed with Photograph & Frame. They've always done a good job, but after this last experience, I won't be going back. I picked up a large poster I had custom framed and took it home. The included hanging hardware looked too skimpy to support the frame, but figured they were the experts and would know what the hook could support. Sure enough, after a few hours, the frame felll, leaving a large hole in the wall. Luckily, my husband was on the couch beneath the frame and was able to stop it before it smashed on the floor. When I first called and then emailed the store about the incident, they implied that I must not know how to hang a picture, despite having purchased several frames from them. Someone must have just grabbed a hook that was too weak by mistake, but immediately pushing the incident back on me left me annoyed. They were no help and the customer service was lacking. I now have to get my wall fixed. I purchased my own stronger hook and the picture is up on the wall and going strong, but I won't be going back to this shop. If you go here, make sure you check the hook they gave you! If it's too weak and you have an issue, you'll be entirely on your own. --- In response to the business response below, as I said in my review, I was able to hang the picture. That's not the issue. The issue is that their mistake caused my wall to be damaged. Wouldn't go there again. read more

Not your typical frame shop, P & F looks modern and stylish. They can help out whether you have something to frame or need art, frames (all wood) or mirrors for your place. You can buy ready made mirrors or design your own. They have a great selection of photographs from local artists ($19 and up), historic prints, Fillmore rock posters, and a smaller collection of museum prints. Many of the photos are of SF, including historic images of the Cliff House, Golden Gate Bridge, Playland, Union Square, and various SF neighborhoods. They can offer more affordable, faster picture framing if you have a piece that's standard size. They even have green frames are made from remnants - you can't tell, they look fabulous. Custom framing for a non-standard sized piece was much less than I expected ($69, and I used my Yelp deal). They even complimented my painting multiple times and included hanging hardware. read more

This store is a clueless bachelor's best friend. I kind of knew that I sort of wanted some classic B&W pics of SF--specifically Nob Hill, preferably of Clay Street and the area around Grace Cathedral, but come on, would they really have them? YES! The carry a ton of photos in store but also have over 100,000 images on their website-simply buy it online and have it shipped to the store for free. The customer service was amazing-Jessica could tell by the look on my face how clueless I was and walked me through the process, helping me decide what prints to get, the proper sizes and frames. I was very impressed by my experience with photograph&frame! I had brought a collection of photos in to have a framed collage made to give as a gift. When I came to pick it up, Ilysa noticed that I was staring at it oddly. She approached me and asked if everything was alright. I told her that the layout did not look as I had expected it to. Without missing a beat, Ilysa started talking to me about ways in which to modify the layout of the mat to make the collage look better. When the revised mat was being worked on Ilysa called me and then texted me photos of it for my input and approval. Talk about amazing customer service! And the rework was done at no extra charge. Apparently this place has been sold to Art.com, or at least a new owner. Severely reduced stock of pre-fab frames and framed art. Employees are still friendly and helpful, although they were not able to help me with what I wanted they did point me in the direction of frame shops that could. They have a set price now for simple framing including frame, glass and mat, but the frames are all the same size and shape, just varying in color. read more

They have a million different frames here and I was trying to find one that would fit 13"x19" so I could frame a couple of Fillmore posters myself. I explained what I was looking for and wouldn't you know it...they have frames that are made for posters from The Fillmore! They are made of wood and available in white and black. The guy took me right where they were and I was out of there in 5 minutes. I popped my posters in and they fit perfectly! I'll definitely be back to start working through my many posters! read more

Once again, they fail to disappoint! Came here for two framing/matting projects: 1) creating a wall collage of 6 photos from travels and 2) framing/matting an large Ork poster as a wedding gift. End result: A satisfied customer. I have no reason to go anywhere else. For #1 they patiently worked with me to design a layout for the photos and pick frames from their fantastic collection of Fred's Frugal Frames. I was so impressed with their skill at selecting various frame textures and colors yet somehow managing to make everything blend perfectly. The frame gallery has now become a favorite part of my home. For #2 I asked them to match the frame I did for a different Ork poster based on a blurry iPhone picture. These guys are the only ones I trust with antiques and original art. They put up with my OCD ("do you mind wearing gloves?") and my indecisiveness and will humor me as I say "...what about..." over and over and over again while discussing warm white vs cool white vs cream and this frame vs that frame and "oh crap I forgot I want UV protection!" Between the two of us, my boyfriend and I have probably had about a dozen things framed from movie posters to comic book art to original paintings to 17th century antique pieces. They're always very courteous and happy to help us through the process every step of the way. They've even given me quick tutorials and sent me on my way with frames, mats, and extra material so I could do my own framing and matting when money was tight. Of the dozen or so pieces we've had framed, we've only had a problem with one and it was quickly remedied to our satisfaction. I came in here totally expecting to be mocked, jeered, or at least scoffed at. I had an old art poster from college that some might consider tacky, but has sentimental value to me, and I was getting it framed using a Groupon that expired the very next day. Instead, the two women working here were incredibly nice and helpful. They gave me lots of options that fit my budget and even complimented my poster. Self-esteem boost: check! I stopped in to photograph and frame today to ask a question. Alicia was there and was all too happy to answer. In fact she did more than that. My question was whether or not photograph and frame could help me cut felt. She said that they probably could but that there were other options as well and the best thing would be for me to bring it in so that they could have a look. It just so happened that I had the pieces in my car so I ran out to get them and came back. Alicia then spent the next hour helping me trim the pieces and make them orthogonal. She did this even though I had already purchased frames elsewhere. She did this because she's just a kind person who is eager to help. She was incredibly curious, thoughtful, courteous, detailed, tenacious, and terrific. Photograph and frame has just won a new customer. Photograph has been the most friendly, organized, and useful framing store I've been to in this city. It's not super cheap, nor is the owner's name Pete, but aren't treasured pictures priceless? When it comes to having something done, done now, and done well, Photograph is the place to go. For example, I needed to find a frame for a non-standard art piece. I went to a cheaper store out on Geary to find that they were going to close 40 minutes early, due to the holiday (which wasn't until the following day). The worst part was the store employee's attitudes when I asked why they were closing early with no announcement. They mocked my urgency and continued smoking while locking their doors. Their website said nothing about it and the stores answering machine said nothing of about closing early which meant I wasted an entire cross-city drive only to go home framless. Luckily, I left the Richmond for sunnier skies and walked to Photograph (which I should have just done in the first place). Not only were they incredibly pleasant, they helped me select a custom frame, will mount theart piece and are fixing it to hang immediately. Plus, they honored my $25 off coupon, even though I didn't spend the requisite $100. Holiday perk? Maybe. But I'm highly satisfied, either way. read more

I have been into Photograph & Frame a few times when I was in a pinch for getting something done or just needed a piece put in a custom cut window mat and I have to say my preconceived notions of what to expect from a walk in frame shop on Chestnut Street were put completely out the door. The people have always been super helpful and accommodating. Just take a look around and you can see that from what is on the walls they do a really creative job of framing a variety of art pieces including some work by renowned artists. I was also taken back a bit that for a shop in the Marina I was not unreasonably fleeced for the work I have had done. In speaking with the folks there on different occasions I came away knowing that they are very well versed on preservation framing techniques. Don't be fooled when you walk in that there are bins of pre-made frames....these folks know what they are doing when it comes to custom framing a piece as well. read more

The store space is well-organized, beautifully-lit, not crowded at all...just makes you want to go in there and browse through their endless assortment of gorgeous, pre-printed photos for hours on end. I went in there to get a picture framed, and with the friendly, helpful staff, had a frame and mat picked out in 5 minutes flat. When I went to pick up the finished item the very next day (they politely called me the next morning to let me know that it was finished), I was not disappointed in the least. Quality framing job, and at a bargain price. Before I discovered Photograph I had called several framers in my local neighborhood, and was quoted with prices twice as high as the final price I was charged at Photograph each time. I definitely will be going back for all my future framing needs! We need more of this kind of framing store in the city...instead of those outrageously-priced, snootily-serviced ones. read more

Having just moved to SF a few weeks ago, my walls were still bare. I stumbled upon Photograph one day and came out 30 minutes later with 2 great 24x24 B/W prints of San Francisco, shot by a couple local photographers. Kate gave me the lowdown on their services, and while it isn't cheap, the quality, service and selection are solid. You won't find anything edgy or overly abstract here as most of the stuff is pretty safe and very tasteful. You can either have them frame it for you (might be an extra charge, I didn't ask), or they can send you on your way with the prints and the frame and a set of handy instructions on how to do it yourself at home. All the hardware is included in the kit and it was a real snap...20 minutes total to put both my purchases on the wall! read more

In the immortal words of Def Leppard: "Photograph, you've gone straight to my head." You see, today was the last day at work for one of our artists (he's off to closer and greener pastures) and we wanted to send him off with something special. A while back we were all fortunate enough to be visited by the legendary Ralph McQuarrie and this particular artist (we'll call him "Greg") was one of his greatest fans. During this visit "Greg" was able to have his photograph taken with Ralph standing in front of one "Greg's" art pieces. It was an honor and something he and many of us will remember for quite some time. That was four months ago. Flash forward to today. We're standing around thinking about what to do for "Greg" when someone said we should have this particular photograph of "Greg" and Mr. McQuarrie printed out. But we figured just giving him the photo wouldn't be enough so we decided to have it blown up and framed. This was at 2:00pm today and we were having a going away party for him at 4pm. Gulp. So we get the photograph blown up and printed here at work, but we have no idea where to get it framed in time. After trying to get one of the assistants here to take care of it to no avail, I took matters into my own hands and jumped on Yelp. I found "Photograph" jumped into my car with photo in hand (via tube) and headed off to the store. It was now 3:30pm and I had to be back by 4pm. Double Gulp. I park mostly illegally, run through the rain and enter the store. I'm greeted by Robin ("Like the bird") and another employee. I explain my situation and Robin goes into overdrive! She helped me pick out a frame, finds the right matte, allows me to use their work area to set up the frame and together (but mostly her) whipped through the best and fastest frame job I've ever seen. Ever the perfectionist, Robin even spots specks of dust that the untrained eye (ok, well my eyes) couldn't even pick up and fixes it right there. With that she wraps up the frame in plastic to protect it from the rain, places it in another bag, and I'm off. It's now 3:50pm. Huge sigh of relief. I make it back to work right at 4pm and into the office just before the guest of honor arrives. All that look upon the photograph and frame are in awe. "It looks fantastic", "Wow, awesome!", "Really, really beautiful job" are just some of the quotes heard from the artists and other folks in the room moments after. I am so happy with my three pieces I got framed. The staff was very helpful and took their time to give me their advice and assistance from the start. Framing is an investment and it makes such a big difference to your artwork! They also have frames from an old barn in Michigan that was torn down and now has frames made from it--- I thought it was very cool if you like the distressed look. They've framed everything from paintings I've schlepped home from Ubud to vintage photographs of my grandmother from the early 1900's. I've been loyal to this shop for a number of years and they've always done an amazing job with helping me with both ready-made frames and with custom framing. one of my photos unexpectedly found its way into an art installation whose opening was in a few days. being new to photography, i was clueless about framing establishments. the gentleman helping me was very patient, knowledgeable, and quick. while i was pleased w/the way that my photo was hugged by matte and a unique faded, cracked, gold 16"x20" frame, i was certainly not pleased to discover that there were a couple of knicks on the inside of the glass that i didn't notice until i got home that evening. while they were small, i was still a bit frustrated to know that i spent a chunk of money on an imperfect glass pane. i realize that i could've gone back to the store to have it replaced, but due to time restraints and the fact that i had no desire to haul my ass back to the marina in the rain, i decided to keep the frame. ...i'd return, but w/a more keen eye for possible imperfections. read more

A great addition to the neighborhood. Especially such a unique place, and so needed. The owner is super nice, knowledgeable and very hospitable. The rest of the staff are also very professional, and very helpful. I got kinda hooked after I completed a project with their mattes and frame. Since then, have bought a bunch more to complete some photos and artwork. They have added to the matte size selection, have a nice assortment of frame sizes and styles. All the photography they have on site are great in quality. And like others have said. The staff will do the framing if you wish, which I recommend because who has an air gun to rid particles =) read more
