Today, I had my first scheduled in-person appointment with Dr. Phuong Tran. Unfortunately, major problems have arisen since I first saw Dr. Tran a few months ago. When I arrived for my 8:45 a.m. appointment, I checked in and paid my co-pay at the front desk, finishing at 8:53 and obtaining a paper receipt. I sat down--there was one other person in the lobby. Dr. Tran came out, called in someone named David, looked at me, and I looked back. David eventually went in with him; note that Dr. Tran and I had never met in person or via video before. After some time, David left, so I waited for my turn. At around 9:36, I asked the front desk what was going on. The person now there (masculine-presenting) was different from the one I'd checked in with (feminine-presenting). He reviewed my appointment and verified my co-pay, then told me that while I was paying, Dr. Tran had marked me as a no-show. He added that patients are allowed only five minutes of slack time before being counted absent and that I would be charged a $50 no-show fee. I have since reviewed all the forms I filled out, and none mention this rule. In decades of seeing doctors, I have never been marked as a no-show after checking in and paying, even if a few minutes late. My first appointment with Dr. Tran had also been unusual. This is my psychiatrist for about 8 years. I was in a skilled nursing facility and had him come in as a psychiatric nurse practiser back in those days. And he was excellent then! Somehow he gave me his card and when I was no longer living at the nursing facility I found his card on the bottom of a box I was emptying. I was so thrilled to have his card because I had lost contact with him. I called him and made an appointment. The rest is history. My brother is also his patient. He loves him too. Dr. Tran is the best. So thankful I had booked a couple months in advance - he's one of the most receptive medical professional I've ever encountered. Extremely compassionate and wonderful bedside manners, as expected from a good provider. What I appreciated most was he was understanding of my situation and took my gripes with my prescribed medication into consideration; he had pivotted accordingly each time, and always made sure to prescribe something within my network for my ease. For my appointments, Dr. Tran allowed my boyfriend* to sit in as well per my request; this was nice since my boyfriend was able to vouch for my concerns, and mention details that I had overlooked in certain situations. *My boyfriend tends to be wary of medical professionals due to his high expectations of providers and exposure to the industry, but he was a hudge advocate fo Dr. Tran as well. Albeit the initial appointment may be a pain to schedule (he's pretty booked up, plus new patients require more time), the follow-ups aren't an issue at all. There's also the option of a video appointment for follow-ups at the moment; I'm not sure how long this alternative appointment will last - I'm sure it's probably an accommodation provided due to COVID. Dr. Tran told me that I didn't need to taper off a benzodiazepine after prescribing one to me for well over a year, which totally messed me up. Then, when he seemed done with me, he just started saying things that I could tell were meant to put me off. He also disclosed someone else's very private personal information to me which made me extremely uncomfortable. Would not go to him unless absolutely desperate, which I was, and I wish I'd gotten a 2nd opinion instead. Lesson learned. read more

My doctor is extremely knowledgeable in his field. Dr. Tran listens patiently and repeats back what I have said so I know we are on the same page (usually at doctor visits everything goes over my head). I cannot remember when I started seeing Dr. Tran, but it had been YEARS since I felt good. I've been on just about every medication for depression and OCD. I was miserable. I was thinking, "Well, this is just how I have to live the rest of my life." To be brutally honest, I wished that I wouldn't wake up every day. I didn't say that to anyone of course, but that's how I felt. I don't know how in the world he did it, but Dr. Tran put me on medications that actually worked for me. When I saw him for my appointments, he actually asked me how I was feeling. He cared! My old psychiatrist didn't even look at me when I came in. :( I have emailed Dr. Tran a few times and have received a response the same day. I got lost trying to find this place. It's deep in a business plaza near the freeways. I called the office and Mayra helped me with directions. She also helped double check my relative's insurance to make sure she wouldn't have a copay. My relative has been seen by Dr. Tran for over 2 years and I've seen a lot of progress. Before she wouldn't want to get out bed, couldn't concentrate, and had no motivation. Now things are looking up. The biggest hurdle for me was finding a place that accepts my insurance. I hate calling around, being placed on hold, and waiting for them to get back to me after checking my insurance. I called this clinic and they told me right away, I guess it's because they accept most insurances? I needed paperwork done and was told to wait 5 business days but it was done less than that. Family doctor recommended this mental health clinic. He said there aren't many good psychiatry clinics in Orange County which is pretty sad. I took my relative here. Even though her insurance sucks, we are still picky with who her doctor is. The first doctor wanted her to start on medications on the first visit. Then we switched to a different doctor who didn't want to start medications until my relative did neuropsychiatric testing. It's hit or miss when calling the clinic, but I haven't had any issues when I email the staff directly. Expect the clinic to be extra busy during the summer because kids are out of school. When I looked online to look for a list of doctors who accepted my insurance, I researched most of them and through discussion groups and reviews I knew I wanted to give Dr. Tran a try. He exceeded my expectations. I was nervous because it I didn't want to be disappointed after doing all my research, but 6 months after my first visit, I've seen huge improvement in my mental clarity, mood, and motivation.
