Wear leggings because sometimes you'll be on your knees. It gets hot in there, and I always appreciate it when they turn the fan on. I took the free foundations class at Pure Barre in Brentwood and was immediately hooked, so I signed up for the unlimited membership for $199/month and I told myself I'd go at least 5 days a week to make it worthwhile, and so far I've been able to keep that promise to myself! Pure Barre has four different class formats, Classic for low impact & high intensity barre, Empower for cardio-centric strength training, Define for weight-based strength training, and Align for flexibility and balance. I'd say they're all difficult yet doable, but Align is the easiest of the four. The workouts often blur the line between strength training and stretching in the best way. My two favorite instructors so far are Claudia and Keani, but honestly they're all great, well trained, and going to give you a killer workout. It is so impressive how they lead the workouts, doing the exercises with you to show you the proper form while also talking you through it, and observing the class enough to let you know if you need to make any adjustments to your form to avoid potential injuries. The classes are between 45-50 minutes, but you'll need to allot additional time to get your equipment before class and wipe it down and put it away at the end, as well as changing out into your regular clothes. If you're participating in the challenges, you'll also need a few minutes after class to get your stars and stamps. Don't be late because they won't let you come into the class if you arrive more than five minutes past the start time. I love when they do themed workout days, such as Beyoncé! You can have fun with it and dress up for the class, and they play music that aligns with the theme. For the Brentwood location, it's slightly confusing to find the first time because of the construction, but it's worth it, and after that you'll always know where you're going. Park in their free underground structure (good news, they usually have a security guard) via the alley in the back, then take the stairs up from the garage, make a right, then take those stairs to the top floor, turn right again, and you'll see the sign pointing to Pure Barre. You'll shake, and they push you harder than you can push yourself, but since it's just for short amounts of time you can do it! After just a few weeks, I definitely noticed more definition and strengths, especially in my glutes and abs.

The timing for each sequence was perfect, and transitions were organic. Both classes were well thought out. Music was also fun. Lindsay's kind and encouraging teaching style made these classes a great barre experience.

She makes sure you get the moves while also keeping the environment supportive, comfortable, and celebratory. I love when she gets so excited that she literally starts screaming because someone in class is going off. She celebrates people constantly, by name or even just noticing something they're rocking like, "Yes, GREEN JUMPSUIT!" Being the only guy in the class, I've never once felt isolated, judged, or uncomfortable about assumptions people might make about me. I've only ever felt celebrated. It was refreshing not having to navigate that in a public place. She encourages fluidity in whatever way feels right for you, whether it's super masc, super feminine, or somewhere in between. Her focus is helping you connect to your artistic dance spirit, and that's when you know you're doing it right. She also celebrates neurodiversity and really focuses on what the strengths are within that, while also helping people navigate certain challenges. Karma's class is more than just learning choreography. Watching her dance is witnessing powerful, raw, and inspiring artistry. When she demos, it honestly feels like a mini performance during class. Then when she dances with us right after, you feel like this epic backup dancer, and it inspires new moves and articulations within you. There's also a strong sense of community in Karma's class. She's built a culture where you not only bring self-love to the class, but appreciation and love for the people dancing alongside you. Someone might be doing a twerk, an offbeat wild move on their chair, or some epic crawl across the floor, and the whole class erupts with roaring encouragement. Karma encourages asking questions about the dance moves and routines. She absolutely loves them. But remember, she's an A-type personality, so be sure to raise your hand. ; ] She's also a motivational instructor because she's real. She doesn't say generic things. Sometimes she shares philosophies or lessons that helped her in life, and I've caught myself thinking, "How is this level of Impacting dialogue happening in a chair dance class?" It's a one-of-a-kind experience that involves a chair, saucy moves, and surprising moments of human-centered community, full of loving people hosted by the radiant Karma!

I also appreciated her focus on hip hop fundamentals like popping and waving as part of our warmup. While I enjoyed the class, I think it would have been intimidating if it was my first time setting foot in a dance studio. I would encourage the front desk employees to greet first time visitors and give them a brief rundown of the space, where to place your belongings, what to expect from class, etc. A lot of the people in the class seemed to know each other already which just shows you how popular these classes are. I hope to return soon!

The staff was friendly, studio was cozy with ample equipment, and the instructor Francesca was wonderful. As with any chain with many locations, the quality of the individual studio and instructor 100% determines class quality. Cons- Parking is $4 there is no street parking option. The free "intro class" is a 30 min explanation of how to use the reformer, not an actual class. Good for beginners.

As a beginner to Pilates, I wanted to try out Club Pilates and other Pilates studios in the area to…read morea) find a home studio, b) learn about my strengths and weaknesses, and c) find an instructor or class that fit my fitness goal. I signed up for the free Intro class, which had a nice and attentive instructor that took the time to introduce herself and ask each of us personally if we had injuries or other physical conditions to worry about when it came to the class. While I did like her as an instructor, the intro class was level 1 exercises that I found a bit too easy, and personally, I wanted to see if they offered more difficult classes that would be tailored to my fitness goals and abilities before committing. Club Pilates kindly offered to let me try a full-length level 1.5 class for free, which I deeply appreciated, but that's where I feel conflicted about my experience so far at this location. I LOVED the workout - it was physically challenging but manageable for me, and was really well balanced when it came to targeting different parts of the body. However, the instructor really wasn't the nicest (to both me and the other attendees), and I walked out in a bad mental state and not wanting to return again. I've been to two other studios with both harder and easier sessions than that day, but all the instructors I had were very kind, encouraging and gentle (not saying I need to be coddled, I swear I do appreciate a correction whenever necessary) while being extremely attentive to my physical needs and abilities without singling me out or making me feel like I was getting picked on. I also feel like the corporate nature of Club Pilates extends into how their employees (both the instructors and front desk girls) treat the attendees, as they really weren't that helpful or interactive, and just shuffled us out the door with a membership promotion flyer without really getting to know us. I do think there's perks of joining Club Pilates (lots of locations, standardized equipment) but personally, I think I'll stick to a studio that humanizes and encourages my personal journey of fitness a little more kindly.
