Kimchi rice on the tapa plate was no slouch as well. Nice and tangy, not too spicy but has that solid kimchi pungency that made it extra nummy. I am an avid fan of pies, more than I am of cakes, so Breakfast and Pies drew me in in an instant. I was overjoyed at the variety of pies they served. Sadly, I haven't tried them all (add that to my life bucketlist!) My favorites so far are the Banana Cream Pie and the Smores Pie. They also serve unique meals that take ordinary breakfast items and fuse them with food items not typically expected in a breakfast meal. Smoked Salmon with capers and pickled red onions on top of waffles? Caramelized Spam with pesto and kimchi? I'm undecided whether they're ingenious, or just plain crazy. I especially loved the Wagyu Beef Tapa with kimchi rice topped poached egg. It's /the/ tapa meal to end all tapa meals. If you're into breakfast and, well, pies, then this is the place to be! read more

Do they bacon? Why YES, they do. The main reason why I fell in love with Pi Breakfast and Pies is that when I ordered their bacon slabs, I didn't think they would be that generous with the bacon. That combined with baconized rice (with crispy bacon bits). Doesn't that just sound lovely? and to top that I couldn't finish my order because it was that big. In my book, we're definitely good! Bacon loving aside, going into the restaurant you'd be enticed by the smell of their pastries, it welcomes you, draws you in and makes you want to stay there forever or until the kitchen closes. Try their Eggs Benedict, it might look small but it's heavy and you'll be full before you know it! If you're not in a hurry try to avoid the lunch rush since it can get really crowded because it's a good place to eat naturally people flock to it. Though I have heard quite a lot of good things about Pi Breakfast and Pies, the place always just comes off as so-so to me. I like how they open early to accommodate the early breakfast crowd, but their famed breakfast specials don't really impress me much. Their concepts are great, and the ideas behind the dishes are innovative and well thought of, but I would always feel like they are missing something with the execution. Sometimes, the dishes are also a hit or miss. The pies are great, though. Their key lime pie is tart and acidic, just perfect and not too cloyingly sweet. I also love the Compost Cookies, your 'everything but the kitchen sink" type of cookie. The pie crust that they use is beautiful. However, if you want to go here for a substantial breakfast, prepare to be a little underwhelmed. Personally, I find that the waffles are a little too oddball for my taste. The Gourmet Waffle was all sorts of baffling, with corn kernels and jalapeno in the batter, and waffle topped with Granny Smith apples, maple sour cream, blueberry compote and chicken skin. I know it's a stab at making Southern-style wafles but this overwhelming cacophony of flavors proved to be too much for one person to handle. There was just so many things going on. A friend of mine ordered the Huevos Rancheros and we totally enjoyed it. This is yet another "everything but the kitchen sink" creation with lots of veggies, beans, peppers, cheese and sausages thrown together in a skillet. read more

Breakfast and Pies will forever by close to my heart (literally and figuratively), as my first experience at this wonderful place was on my birthday (I shall refrain from mentioning which one in particular). She brought me here as a surprise, knowing how much I love breakfast food. I went with my usual go-to breakfast food, tapsilog. Breakfast & Pies's version of tapsilog is their Wagyu Beef Sirloin Tapa. Served on top of kimchi garlic fried rice (seriously, who is the genius behind this?), this menu item single-handedly set me up with enough joy and energy for the day. She ordered the Eggs Sammy, which is not exactly how I would start my mornings (fish is healthy, and I like salmon, but not exactly breakfast food), but regardless, it tasted very good. When I heard that it was made by the same person who came up with The Burger Project, Pi, Pino, Pipino, and the Backyard Kitchen + Brew, I knew I was in for a wonderful treat. Pi Breakfast & Pies is one of those restaurants that serve all-day breakfast meals. They are also one of the very few restaurants that I have been to that actually serves a variety of different-flavored pies. They are known for their cereal milk. It's like your typical fresh milk with a hint of sweetness. I don't know how they make it, but it is so good. I really feel that I could finish one whole gallon of it. I also like their Chicken and Waffles. I know it doesn't sound like a really good combination, but trust me, it is! The chicken skin was deep fried to perfection, while the waffles have a very unique taste. It is like sweetness and spice at play. It was truly heavenly. read more

I love waffles. I absolutely adore them. I love their crunchy texture and soft insides with taste and aroma that reminds of good American home-cooking. For me, the best kind of waffles is available at a popular restaurant chain with a "homey" orange logo. (See what I did there?). I have yet to find a close second. Let the search begin. My intro suggests that the waffles of Breakfast & Pies did not do me much good. I did, however, love their Caramelized Spam with garlic and kimchi rice. I think Spam is one of the greatest inventions ever. Did you know that SPAM is actually a shortcut for "Special Processed American Meat" and was hugely popular in World War II? Not only was it popular in the US because it was heavily rationed but it was a famous item for troops abroad because it was easy to handle and easy to ship. Toss it with pesto, a perfectly cooked egg and some awesome garlic kimchi rice, I'd happily go back for seconds. read more

Usually I have this four hour chemistry lab class from 7:30 - 11:30 that I dread every week, but one time my professor announced a free cut. I decided to celebrate my (four-hour) freedom with my block by exploring Maginhawa and its lovely restaurants that have made their homes in the food blogs of the internet. We were on our way to (try to look for) Ally's All Day Breakfast, but on the way we passed by Pi's Breakfast and Pies and fell for its cute design. We dined in the back area so our big group could be accommodated, and I got the chocnut pancakes for P175. They were a delight - fluffy and sweet, with that familiar chocnut flavor in every bite, but I ordered a bottle of cereal milk on the side that was way too sweet (I ordered the Froot Loops variety) and overpowered the pancakes. I'll try the corn flakes one next time. We all split a banana cream pie at the end, which was beyond words. Sadly, no more free cuts were given after that instance, and I've yet to come back Pi Breakfast and Pies. read more

True to its name, Pi's Breakfast and Pies offers a range of breakfast food and pies that you can enjoy any time of the day. When I went there, I got to try their chicken and waffles. What's special about this unique dish is that this 2-piece waffle contains a surprise kick in its batter: corn kernels and bits of jalapeno. This goes well with golden brown crispy skin that goes with your order. You should try their take on a crack pie and a cereal milk. Both are good and I can just imagine if you eat that a night. Might be able to usher sweet dreams! Nonetheless, we've been wishing this joint opens another one in Makati. Though sadly they've decided to stay in Manginhaw street. read more

GREAT DESSERT PIE NEAR MAGINHAWA It's no secret that Maginhawa is a foodie destination, but the next time you find yourself craving for something sweet while in this popular eat-street, try the Smack Pie by Breakfast & Pies. Located in Malingap street very near Maginhawa, this restaurant sits beside Pino. Order a slice of the lip-smackingly sweet Smack Pie and before you know it, you're slicing (forking?) through a thin crust with a deliciously gooey, sugary, milky taste. What I enjoy a lot about this dessert is its chewy texture, almost like a soft nougat bar. This pie is inspired by the Momofoku Milk Bar (look it up), but a hardcore sweet tooth like me enjoys the Smack Pie a whole lot because it's really sweet. A bite or two can send your pulse skipping. Slice is at 155, whole for 900. Order it with coffee (or warm milk!) for the full experience. (You may also opt to drink lots of water after.) read more

Breakfast food is so much more than just eggs & bacon. One reason why I love it so much is because there's much you can do with it. Yes, there are basic ingredients, but the length that you can do with it is just so long. Breakfast & Pies is another restaurant that just solidifies that idea. Once you step inside Breakfast & Pies, you can already feel the lightness from how the interior is designed. Which is a great thing because breakfast food is comfort food, you eat it to feel better and to feel good. One of their stellar dishes is the Wagyu Beef Sirlion Tapa, and it's served with kimchi fried rice, a five-minute egg, and atchara. There has been a lot of variations of this dish but Breakfast & Pies creats its own stamp on it. The Sirloin Tapa is tender, juicy, and has the right amount of saltiness to it. The kimchi fried rice has that heat, but not too much, that completes the taste of the dish. The Caramelized Spam is also an interesting dish that tastes great!
