I went there here with my girlfriend for the first time. We only went because it had a Scoutmob. We figured that if the food wasn't that good at least we were getting it discounted. We ordered two veggie platters. Well...the food was extremely mediocre. Not terrible, but certainly not great. Just meh. Definitely on the bottom of my list of Ethiopian places to go to in Atlanta. Like others have said here, the service was also terrible. After we were done with our meal we sat for a good 15 minutes waiting for someone to come by to give us our check. Then I had to ask our waitress twice for a box. (And, no, they were certainly NOT busy.) But my biggest issue came when they pulled this bs about how they couldn't accept our Scoutmob. The waitress claimed their computer was down so they couldn't process it. I told her that made no sense and that all she had to do was take $10 off the bill. It's easy. Everyone's phone has a calculator these days. She said she had to run it through the computer. I have never been to a place that has told me this so it sounded like a total scam. Put up a Scoutmob to get you into the place then claim you can't take it so the patron has to pay full price for your mediocre bland ass food. I will certainly NEVER go back there. The boring ass food was not worth dealing with the crap service. So if you're thinking about going, you've been warned. And especially if you're only going because you're expecting a cheap meal...don't do it. read more

I read several negative reviews about this restaurant regarding the less than helpful service and long wait times but I thought I would give it a try for myself because the reviews could have been exaggerated. Well, what a dummy I was. Everything that people said was exactly what I experienced. I was so very disappointed. I wanted to love this place because it is very close to home. 1. It seemed to take forever for someone to take my order. I didn't keep the exact time but it was easily 25 to 30 minutes before she came back just to see if I was ready to order. There was hardly anybody in the restaurant! It seemed to have taken about another 45 minutes for me to receive my food, but like I said before, I wasn't keeping time. 2. I needed help desperately with the menu and it was like pulling teeth trying to get clear and meaningful assistance from her. I had a particular dish picked out but I was unclear about the sides that came with it. Instead of her describing the sides, she kept trying to make me choose something else to eat. But she wouldn't tell me why. 3. I made it clear to her--three times to be exact--that I did not want beef. I ended up ordering a lamb dish and a goat dish. When I got home, both dishes were beef. But not just any beef. Never in my life have I ever received a plate full of fat like I received from them. Literally, just chopped up fat. The part that was actually meat was so overcooked, it was like chewing hard gum. We could not swallow it. We had to chew and spit, chew and spit. I just stopped by today for the first time and picked up the Veggie Combo to go. I have had quite a bit of Ethiopian food but I'm no expert. Everything was truly delicious and the portion was enough for me and my adult son to have a good meal. The arrangement of the store and restaurant is unfamiliar to most people here and it took me a minute and some friendly guidance to understand where I should place my order. The people were very friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant was comfortable and inviting in a loungy kind of way. Ethiopian dining is clearly about relaxing with friends and family and enjoying your time. Piassa seems like a great place to spend an evening listening to music and dining with friends so I'll look forward to coming back for the full experience. As for some of the reviews: I don't understand why a person who does not like injera bread would write a review of an Ethiopian restaurant. I find it extremely aggravating that some reviewers have difficulty understanding that different cultures relate to time in different ways and have varying traditions of hospitality. People's livelihoods are affected by these reviews so I wish that everyone would take the time to consider how their biases may influence the opinions that they post. read more

The reviews of this place are beyond ridiculous. I rarely review places but this place deserves redemption. This is sincerely one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in the Atlanta! I'm vegetarian and my boyfriend is a meat lover and we were both 110% pleased with our meals. He got the combo (beef, lamb, & goat) & I got the veggie combo. The portion was FANTASTIC, easily enough for two people (I had leftovers). The most interesting thing about this place is the FRESHNESS of the beef. Wonder why? Because they are also a BUTCHER SHOP. Very good food! The interior was colorful and full of cultural decor, separated from the grocery mart by a beaded curtain. There were several TVs and a projector showing the Falcons game and a small stage with benches and a keyboard. The traditionally-garbed waitress spoke broken English but was able to help us order just what what we were looking for - a huge platter of beef tibs (ground and cubed), cabbage and carrots, lentils, greens, and salad with onions and tomatoes. All the items are served on top of the spread out injera so the juices soak through. The waitress brought out another basket of injera without us asking so we never ran out. The ground beef was spiced well and the cubed beef was charred, fatty, and tasty. With the Scoutmob deal, it was a steal for 4 people. My only complaint is that service was slow for the second half of our visit. This is not a place for someone who wants to try "toned down" Ethiopian food. Instead, I would highly recommend Piassa for a group of friends who are willing to share a platter and don't mind the strong scent of incense, bamboo walls, and chatter of locals. It's kind of a 3.5 star place, which is what the rating sits at now. We appreciated the environment, the fact that they served alcohol, (many Ethiopian restaurants in our state don't) and the extensive menu. The quality of the food was pretty good. We had the veggie combo as well as a meat combo. The service left a lot to be desired. Yes I try to be very generous when it comes to cross cultural concepts of service, but our waitress was rude. She seemed annoyed we weren't ordering more (Four of us, we ordered for "3" and had tons of leftovers). Never checked on us or offered refills. We waved at her a few times and were obviously ignored. We asked about the coffee ceremony on the menu and she told us it was only available on Thursdays, (doesn't say that on the menu) and then just walked off before we could order something in its place. When my friend motioned for the check, she visibly rolled her eyes and sighed. Towards the end, another waitress started helping us while ours continued to just sit down behind the bar as she had done most of the night. The other waitress was much nicer, and brought us coffee and tea, but we were disappointed that the tea was just a bag of Lipton and the coffee wasn't the best. Overall, the place was a great value, and if I lived in the area I might stop by and get something to go, but I'd prefer to visit other Ethiopian places in hopes of finding a warmer welcome. read more

My lover and I decided to have a go at Ethiopian cuisine. We saw the scoutmob and we are both adventurous eaters so we thought..... why not? There were many options to choose from that sounded excellent. We started with standard beef samosas. These little bastards took about 20 mins to come out, and were visibly burnt. They were so hard I couldn't even cut it with my knife! We asked for another batch and after an awkward stare off...I won. Second batch not burnt but they were still weak. I have had much better. (Hint Dekalb Farmer's Market). For the real-deal we ordered a veggie-combo, which was really flavorful and tasty. Not sure what all of it was. but spiced lentils, sautéed green beans and cabbage were recognizable. We also had the meat combo (goat, beef, and lamb) to share. So disappointing, the meat was tough and exceptionally bland. A triple whammy to say the least. Ummm ok, so about this traditional bread they have called injera. I seriously loathe it. Its gray, and bubbly looking with the consistency of jello. No thanks I'll take my bread non-wobbly..... The silver lining of the meal - The beer called Harar. I found it to be refreshing, sweet and full-bodied but not too heavy. Alcohol has a way of "fixing" things. Went there with a group of 15 people last night for dinner, there was no server checking on us (although it wasn't busy) to even order we had to go all the way to the kitchen or bar worse service everrrr plus we found a piece of injera that was bad. We came here with a large group, and were seated kind of bench-style around 2 small tables. The combo plate (don't remember what it was called) was served in generous portions, with a great variety- lamb, beef, goat, along with veggies and unending servings of injera. Enough for 5 people. Btw, don't get the beef short rib, unless you like it super crisp and overcooked. That's just how they do it here. The atmosphere may leave much to be desired, but you don't expect ethnic places to be like some Buckhead joint, do you? I mean, really? This place isn't bad, especially if you have Scoutmob. Don't let the location sketch you out, because it's not as bad as it seems. Although the bird that just sat on the sidewalk as we left with no clue what was going on around him was a bit sketchy... Anyway, it's definitely not as good as some of the other nearby Ethiopian places, but it's not bad. It seems to double as a music club or something, and there is a bar. The lighting is more like a club than a restaurant, at least at night. I got my usual Ethiopian dish, which is awaze tibs. It wasn't as spicy as I would have liked and it also just didn't seem to have as much spice to it in general. It was kind of bland, and there were some fatty pieces in there. They do give you PLENTY of injera, I had leftovers for the next day and I'm pretty sure I didn't even use all the injera, and I didn't even get extra! Any good reviews you read are from relatives or the owners. It took -forever- to get service. (See Kim B's review from December). My fish was so overcooked, the edges tasted like cardboard. To get to the dining room, you have to first make it past this weird room near the entrance that looks like a small cafeteria. Their cabbage side is MUCH more potato than cabbage. I have reported it to Uber Eats and am waiting for the delivery of the missing items. I called the restaurant and reported the missing item that had been paid for. The man on the phone was very rude and made me repeat my request three times. He concluded by saying that he was going to check on it and get back to me. He basically just hung up the phone. He never asked my name or the order number. I will update this review if I hear back from them but at this point, the customer service is horrible as well as the overall dining experience. Having visited many Ethiopian restaurants here in Atlanta and elsewhere, I can safely say that this is one of the more unique restaurants that I have visited. It starts with the fact that the restaurant is coupled with a fresh meat market, and I do mean fresh like straight off the truck, its own children's playroom, a room devoted to the tradition of drinking Ethiopian honey wine with wall space totally devoted to the great thinkers of present day Ethiopia. The food was excellent and typical of what I have found in other Ethiopian restaurants. The meet was grilled a little tough but all of the veggie stews were excellent. Food gets 3.5 stars. I haven't had Ethiopian fare in a while and was introducing bae. We got the "for 2" and a woman with a basket and a huge tray with injera came to our table. She opened the basket, flipped it over and out came a mess of injera, goat, beef, and chicken. She mixed it all together and BAM, our meal. I thought the red spice was beautiful and the chicken and beef were wonderful. The goat was so-so. Bae was a bit sad we didn't get all the veggies to dip our injera in and didn't eat much of our food. I took it home, ate it again and again for many meals and still have a ton of injera left. I've always thought that if I went to Ethiopia I would probably be a little fearful. Therefore, this place is really authentic because I was fairly nervous the whole time. Perhaps it was the cow meat hanging by the entrance, or the dark, just-empty-enough dining room behind beaded curtains. That being said, the manager was very nice and the food was pretty good. The menu is a little overwhelming, so the waitress recomended the beef tibs, which were great and the perfect portion. Without scoutmob it would have been a little pricey for what it is. My boyfriend got the 30-inch cow ribs which were....GIANT. Don't expect normal, saucy ribs; they were burnt to a crisp and scored with a knife so that the knobs of meat could be severed more easily. Not my thing, but definately different. My only complaint was that the injera was cold...I don't know what the custom is but at other places it's been warm, and I like that. read more

I enjoyed this place. VERY kitchy atmosphere, but in a good way. Sort of tiki-bar style. I have eaten a lot of Eithiopian over the years and so I know what I like. Ever since the Cottage closed its doors a couple of years ago, I've been missing really tasty Eithiopian, so I was excited to give this place a try when we saw it on Scoutmob. It's not quite at the level of Cottage but definitely worth a try. We went on a Sunday and did not find the service to be slow although it was a bit awkward/confused because they didn't seem to understand English very well. First off they DO have appetizers - just the typical samosas, which were pretty nice. We had the lentil and beef samosas, the beef were tasty, lentil were a bit bland but I asked for hot sauce on the side which really helped. You get two in an order and they are small. The lentil appetizer had some cold spots so it obviously came from frozen, which is not unusual but I hate biting into a cold spot. I love a place with Eithiopian beer, however one of ours came out lukewarm and they did not have frosty mugs, so be sure to see if the beer is cold if you like cold beer. The portions are huge and although tasty they seem to use a ton of clarified butter on everything. We ordered a side of red lentils and it was served as a soup, swimming in clarified butter. It was ok flavor-wise but too buttery for me. My favorite dish in Eithiopian restaurants is yebeg (lamb) tibs and there's was generally how I like it, with jalapeno and rosemary. The lamb was fattier than I'm used to but not bad. I enjoyed it. My boyfriend ordered the special kitfo raw. I normally like kitfo but this was 'special' and had some mild red sauce and ghee on it. I was not into it at all but my boyfriend enjoyed it, although not the best kitfo he's had. I'm only giving it 3 stars this time around but I am willing to give it another try, maybe try the veggie platter or doro wat the next time around. read more

This is probably my favorite Ethiopian place in Atlanta when it comes to vegetarian options. The veggie combo platter is to die for. I am not nearly as fond of the beef dishes as I find the meat too stringy. When I step in here I feel like I am on another continent. The pace of life immediately slows down. This place was so horrific that I had to write my first Yelp review. We only came here because we had a voucher. My SO and I ordered the tibs combination and the "Dulet." The tibs was inedible. It was 65% tendon and other connective tissue, 20% meat/ tough muscle and 15% fat. The tibs appeared to be deep fried making it extra dry which adds insult to injury. The one star is for the restaurant having an above par atmosphere. We spat out most of what we chewed, paid the bill and left for another restaurant. I hope we just ordered the wrong items. I've never eaten Ethiopian food, but when my good friend, Nathan, who I harbor no romantic feelings for at all, offers to take me out to a little nation called Ethiopia, how can I refuse? So supple-lipped Nathan picks me up in his 2002 Toyota Corolla (what a gentleman!) and takes me over to Piassa. This place is so frigging romantic. Piassa would be perfect for an inexpensive date/two bros hanging out not thinking about kissing one another. The atmosphere is great, with dimmed lights and exotic music playing in the background. I would say that the music beats at the tempo of love, but that's just my opinion. I let my handsome friend order for me, because his shoulders are broader than mine. We get this $15 plate to share that included beef, lamb, a salad, and a tangy sauce. Along with our plate came four very phallic rolls of dough. Oh yeah, they came. Yummy. We lubricated up with a couple of delicious Ethiopian beers I had never tried before. Nathan is so worldly. I would describe Ethiopian cuisine as the most intimate cuisine of all. We were not immediately greeted but a few mins later, there was a welcoming sense. We were then seated. Then came the complimentary glass of water! A glass of water WITHOUT ICE. You see, I was ok with that since the water was warm/cool for me, but, on the other hand, my friend wasn't happy at all. Then comes the food/entree we both trying to order. The waiter seems a bit careless about what we wanted. I told her I wanted a specific dish and flavors and what not, but was given "I Don't Care about your order" type of attitude. So, we then proceeded to order the meats combo that consists of beef, goat, and sheep, alongside with Injera. Let me tell y'all child, it WAS the worst Ethiopian dish I ever had. I know Ethiopian dishes are so good if you dine at the right place, but NOT this ONE! Overall, it is OK service with Below Average dishes. So I am not going to recommend it. At all. Truly one of the worst dining experiences ever. Read the other reviews, most people were being kind. I'm no fan of Ethiopian food, but my friend had a Groupon and I agreed to go. If you hate injera, as I do, be forewarned that only one dish has rice. We started with the beef sambussa (they were out of the lentil sambussa and allegedly the beef also, but then it appeared at our table). Like others have commented, they were nearly burnt to a crisp. The actual flavor wasn't too bad, if you can ignore the fact that the outside resembles charcaol. For entrees, I ordered the lamb and rice and my friend had a spicy beef dish. The rice on my dish was greasy (??) and had mystery vegetables, but was otherwise okay. Just sort of there. My lamb was eraser sized pieces of lamb flavored "meat." Lamb is usually tender. Not here. The meat was fatty and tough. Whatever part of the lamb this meat came from, it was definitely the cheapest. My friend's beef dish was equally as deplorable. It was all meat, no vegetables. I'll admit the sauce was pretty good. Unfortunately, the cut of beef was also cheap, tough, and mostly gristle. The meat at this restaurant must have come from Walmart...in Ethiopia. The service is nonexistent. Make sure you drink something before you go, because you are never getting a refill. When we first arrived, they were playing traditional music. Then they switched to Leo Sayer's More than I can Say, which they played on repeat 7 times!!! before we asked them to change the music. Then we were delighted with various English and African versions of Happy Birthday songs. It was bizarre and hilarious. First, Id like to advise Yelp readers to not trust any review on an Ethiopian restaurant by someone who 1) is xenophobic/ignorant (Review by "Eleanor S.") 2) hates injera. That's like writing a review of a sandwich spot saying that you hate bread. That being said, Ill make it short The restaurant wasn't busy, service was good/fast Food was alright, but I was having a major pregnancy craving. The next day, i noticed the awaze tibs (spicy chopped beef) to be fattier than previously thought. Veggies lacked flavor. Atmosphere I loved. But Im a big fan of Ethiopian culture soooo if you're scared/a closet racist, go to Meskerem or Desta We had a scoutmob, so it was only $22 (tip included) to feed my pregnant self, my 6'7 husband, a glass of Tej (don't get it), and still have leftovers. I'll agree with some of my peers and say that if you're craving, go on a weekend night. But if you want the best, look elsewhere. read more

The atmosphere was pretty cool. The tables were nice and the decor was traditional. Our service was also good. Our server didn't understand much English but she very pleasant to talk to about the menu. The meat is butchered in house and if you look at the cooler in front of you across the counter you might catch a glimpse of what your about to eat in the pre-butchered form. The reason why i give four stars instead of five is because the meat was a bit fatty. I got a 3 meat dish with I believe Goat, Veal, and Beef. The bread is incredible and the sauce was delicious too. The decor was very interesting with plenty to look at and study. The music was authentic and lovely. I enjoyed the knowledge gained about Ethiopia from the decor. I was extremely excited to experience Ethiopian cuisine but I was let down. I understand the concept of acquired taste but my biggest issues wasn't the flavor, it was the service and preparation. Our server didn't seem very interested to speak to us. She kept sending another server over instead. The food took about 45 minutes to come out which added to my to my aggravation when the meat was so tough and chewy that it could've been used for bungie cord. We switched out the bungie cord for something else only to wait another 30 minutes the next item. I would not recommend this place because of there lack of customer service and the poorly prepped food. This place was certainly an experience. My bf found a great groupon for it, and we decided to go on an adventure. It is super casual and I felt like I had left the US when I sat at our booth. All the signs were in another alphabet, and the English translations were poorly spelled and had bad grammar, which I found really amusing and added to the authenticity of the restaurant. Truthfully the food we had wasn't awesome, but it was an interesting place to explore. One warning I would give is not to order the Kurt. The description was something like "finely chopped row meat" with a list of interesting spices. Turns out there is a misspelling, and they meant to say RAW meat. We literally ordered like 2 lbs of raw cold steak. Needless to say we were surprised. I had a good time there. The restaurant has very cozy lighting and cute decoration. It takes some time to wait for the food but the portion is big; my gf and I ordered 3 dishes and we didn't even finish half. Decent food for the price, recommended! read more

We have eaten in many, many Ethiopian restaurants, and I'm sad to say that this place was disappointing. We ordered the veggie platter, and the Shiro, lentils and other sides were cold, and bland. The service was meh. read more
