Didn't want to write this, but the best way to sum it up is 'meh +'. Ordered an espresso martini and asked for it to be followed later by a French rosé to accompany the salt and pepper calamari, and after that would be the open lamb pita. Unfortunately the calamari arrived before the martini, and mixing espresso and squid is definitely not a good combo. The martini was extremely bitter, but there's a handful of reasons why that would occur. I would have said something but the service was few and far between. The staff didn't offer any water, which was surprising since the table next to me was brought some without asking. Perhaps I was meant to ask, despite there being a water glass set in front of me. Eventually the water arrived halfway through the main meal. I wasn't told that there were specials on the menu until the other table opposite me (that sat 20min after I ordered) sat down and were offered the specials straight away. I felt that because I was a solo diner I was being rushed through the so they could have the table back, even though I made a booking vice being a walk-in. Even at the end of the meal, I was given the menu for dessert but only the tables around me were offered the dessert special. The open lamb pita was delicious and I'd certainly order that again. And the wine was a nice match with the meat, tartness of the tzatziki, and freshness of the tomato and cucumber salad. Unfortunately the service overall was consistently inconsistent - perhaps they were busy and not enough staff available, but I wasn't the only one making general comment about it on the patio. This place has the best customer service! The coffee is not bad either. Had toasted muesli which was served with fig paste, yoghurt and milk. What a delicious combo. The lady who served us was bubbly, helpful and fast. She was a real value to this place. The only complaint I have is they charge a percentage to use your credit card to pay. read more

Piato Restaurant is an easy, breezy spot for breakfast. Piato is positioned on the end of a row of three to four cafes on Blues Point Rd in McMahons Point and each of these cafes is as busy as the other. Flipping a metaphorical coin, we ended up at Piato, what turned out to be a fine and fortunate choice. The coffee here is not bad at all (beans by Bellaroma) and the food is both delicious and reasonably priced. I had the smoked salmon and dill scrambled eggs with a side of dill creme fraiche ($14.50). It was simple, extremely tasty and came in a healthy sized portion. The breakfast menu doesn't have a heavy Greek influence (other than the Greek omelette with haloumi and olives), although traces of this influence are seen in their seafood dominated dinner menu, with souvlaki and keftethes (Greek meatballs). Piato's terrace is quaint, shaded by greenery and a charming black and white striped awning. The service is decent but not great, as the male waiters are a little arrogant and the females a little abrasive, however this is a minor hindrance to this cafe. Whilst I'm yet to try its neighbouring competitors, I'd be happy to head here again if the metaphorical coin decided it would be so. read more

You know, I don't mind local-y places, where the staff seems to know all the customers and friendly chats abound. What I do mind is incredibly loud, screechy, highly personal conversations before 7am from every staff member, who look at you in annoyance when you dare interrupt their story about their latest excursion to NZ to order your coffee. Which isn't that great anyway. Banana bread was a way thin piece, stale and burned on one side. Ambiance is cute, though. read more

A cruise along McMahons Point will quickly show you that although this may not be the classiest eating spot it is generally the busiest on a weekend lunch time. Seemingly an institution with locals, the menu is dirty and dog-eared, but the food looks good. We ordered tapas stye - meatballs, prawns, calamari, chorizo and some sangria. The owner took our order, a cheery chap with a great attitude - loves to talk and meet people, loves his job - half his luck!! Sitting in the afternoon sun watching the world go by - this will definitely mean a nana nap later! Came here with my friend and it was a A-OK experience. The service was friendly and great but the food was just so-so. My friend ordered the atlantic salmon and I ordered the Squid Ink Crab pasta and Risotto balls. The atlantic salmon was predictably good but the Squid Ink crab pasta needs a change...it was tasteless and the pasta was like jelled together. The Risotto balls were interesting and edible as it relied on its texture and having been deep fried and all...but this isn't a place that does Italian food justice (my uncle is Italian and If he came with me here he would be somewhat displeased). Also note: you poop blue after eating the Squid Ink pasta (just a reminder just in case anyone freaks out etc). Services was extremely friendly and was great except for when one of the owners started cussing loudly about money issues? Would probably not come back cause there are just other great options nearby. read more

I ordered a coffee ten minutes ago and it's still not here. Not cool if I were in a rush but as it happens I'm not. So instead I take the opportunity to sit back and soak up the atmosphere of this outdoor-only cafe. It's a bit of a nippy day and it looks like rain is coming but thankfully there is a decent stripey orning covering most of the tables. It has a distinct European feel to it. With the round tables and comfy red and white chairs and a cave like counter where the barista stands. The counter is raised so the staff stand behind there doing their things - polishing cutlery, heating milk etc - but as they are quite jovial and playful with one another it's a little bit more like a puppet show. This place is pretty busy for a Wednesday morning - the busiest on the strip at least. I assumed the coffee would be good for this reason. It is strong, hot and tasty but it's not exceptional. Expectations get me in trouble every time. Breaky highlights include: Greek omelet with haloumi Baked eggs on white bean, chorizo and tomato ragout with Turkish bread. Buttermilk pancakes. Sign hangs reading Sangria $15 by the jug. I'll come back - just in case it's the specialty is the red stuff rather than the brown. Sign also says... "men are like wine: some turn to vinegar but the best improve with age" - the cheeky character of this cafe shining through. read more

Nice little Italian restaurant with reasonably good food with fast service. Only complaint is my king sized prawn discharged an undigested brown/red liquid into my dish when cut. The kitchen should devein and remove the shell to avoid such unpleasantries and Tony was playing rather loud music regardless of the patrons dining around and had a bit of attitude. He came across as rather aloof. Apart from his bedside manner, Andressa the waitress was a pleasure to be around and made my review a 3 star and not a 2. P.s they have good coffee. read more

Went there with my boyfriend last week and the service was exceptional. Food on the other hand was not great. I'm very critical when it comes to pasta because of my family who makes amazing sauces and the fact I lived in Italy for 3 years. Black ink pasta sauce was sour and a little tasteless, not to mention actual chunks of tomato in there (not an Italian dish at all). My boyfriends seafood risotto was mediocre and quite small. He finished my pasta as he was still hungry but I said no to dessert and that never happens, I just didn't want another mediocre dish. Service was great so I'll give it two stars but food was far from Italian. There was just no flavor and nothing to remember it by. I make better pasta at home. read more

Quaint little Italian restaurant with all fresco dining. Ordered the seafood platter for 2 @ $105. Was pretty good value and very tasty. Couldnt finish the platter. Garlic prawns and salmon were very tasty as were the mussels. The octopus was tasty but too much to eat unless you're a die hard octopus fan. Staff were very friendly and sociable and willing to accommodate. Meals include tapas style or main meals. $20-50pp read more

We love Piato, visit it every time we are in Sydney. Not only scrumptious food, but very good value for money. Seafood varieties are great, really fresh rock oysters, great coffee, our favourite restaurant in Sydney. Never had a bad meal there. read more

Awfully rude service. We were told by staff to sit anywhere. After sitting down, we then had staff hovering and were told we had to move tables because in 2 hours a party of 10 would be arriving. We were then told to sit in a cramped space next to a wall with waiters constantly walking by and treading on my bag. When we left this awful restaurant, the party of 10 still hadn't arrived. On top of this, we offered to pay more than the bill to leave a tip, stating the total amount we wished to pay, which was already in excess of the bill. We were then charged a 1% surcharge on top of this. When I later queried this, it was met with a raised voice and a very rude response. I have been to Piato several times but will not return ever. What was meant to be a pleasant experience has left me feeling very disappointed. Save yourself the nasty experience! Many far better choices where you will be treated with respect and not subjected to ordinary food to boot. We would rate this place zero if we could! Incidentally, Piato means flat in Italian.. At least they got the name right... because that's how you'll feel after going there. read more
