Since I was already carrying several things, I set the ranch cups and ketchup packets on top of my closed purse while heading to checkout. At the register, I handed over the food basket, ranch cups, pastries, nuts, and everything else. We spent about $75 on snacks and another $60 on fuel. Then the cashier asked, "Ma'am, are you trying to steal ketchup?" I was completely caught off guard. I have never stolen anything in my life and honestly didn't even know ketchup packets were something that had to be paid for. When she asked how many I had, I told her 3 or 4, and I immediately paid for them. There was never any argument or hesitation. It was simply an honest mistake. What made the situation upsetting was how embarrassing it felt to be accused in front of other customers. Maybe there was a sign posted near the hot food section, but I didn't pick up the food myself and never saw it. I just wish there had been a little more understanding, especially considering we had already spent well over $100 in the store. A simple explanation that the sauces were an extra charge would have gone a lot further than making me feel like I was trying to steal.
