She rescheduled me for a different day at 10. I stood for 15 min and watched her groom another dog. She wasn't doing very well with the dog, so I walked out. We left speechless: Today along with my daughter and 2 young grandsons entered the store with plans to purchase a small starter fish tank and a few fish for my grandsons. After inquiring & asking for advise from "Terry" an associate working in the Fish Dept about what type of fish we should get for the tank we picked out, she not only discouraged us from buying any fish & said we should choose a different kind of pet and then proceeded to insult us by telling us we were being inhumane if we chose to put more than 1 fish in the tank we wanted to buy and she also refused to sell us the 2 fish that we told her we wanted to purchase. She also said " what are you teaching your kids" when we told her we just wanted to get a small tank for 2 small fish so the kids would learn how to care for a pet. Her personal opinions were offensive and very hurtful. My 6 year old started crying and said he didn't want it happen like this when he came to buy a pet. We left the store very disappointed and dissatisfied with this service. I am still in shock by this whole occurrence. Usually we use Petsmart or another local groomer. This time we went to Petco down the street from us in Olathe. We have a beautiful rust colored golden retriever in his later years. Anyways We go to pick him up yesterday and they buzzed him. Both coats buzzed off leaving him only 1/4" to 1/2" of fur for winter. They hit a few small growths he had that should never have been touched so he was bleeding in multiple places. After all this the manager says, "That is how they usually do it". Buzz a golden retriever? Simple google search can give you a lesson if you are uninformed. Needless they denied even giving a refund (which of course won't be bring our dog fur back, but no way we should have had to pay for such a terrible service. They ruined our poor dogs coat. This is generally my go to for pet products. They have a nice selection of products to appease most pet owners. They also sell some pets. (no dogs or cats) They offer obedience classes for dogs and have grooming services. The pug likes their furry squeaky toy selection and the dog treat bar. If you need assistance it often means hunting someone down, but once you do find someone they are great at helping with what you need. read more

****Update: Since my original post, I have been contacted by the district manager at Petco. He apologized for the condition of the food and stated they are retraining employees on raw food inventory maintenance to ensure this type of problem doesn't occur again. He offered me a refund on my food in the form of a gift certificate. I previousy gave them two stars but will upgrade my rating to three stars due to how he handled the complaint. But with that being said, it is highly doubtful that I will buy raw frozen food from Petco again due to the experience and finding cheaper pricing elsewhere locally. But I will happily purchase other items from them, like rawhides.*** I purchase Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Small Bites SuperAntioxidant for my dogs.I used to purchase this product from Petco, but because of how their employees improperly store the food, I began purchasing it from Chewy.com. Specifically, the bags are allowed to defrost and are then refrozen. This causes the bites to meld into lumpy frozen masses when refrozen and causes freezer burn. Prior to purchasing from Chewy, I needed to take an ice pick to the food to get it to break apart. And if that failed to work, I had to use a hammer to beat them apart. And a good portion of the time none of these solutions worked either. While I did have a couple of problems with Chewy during the time I ordered the food from them, they were no where near as bad as Petco. When Chewy.com recently stopped carrying frozen raw dog food with the exception of their own product, Tylees, I decided to give Petco another try, hoping my problems were isolated incidents. They were not. First, I went to the Olathe location and purchased four bags of the food. When I arrived home, as always, there were chunks in the bags that had melded together and the food was freezer burned. I could tell there was a little bit of a problem at the time of purchase but went ahead and purchased the product because I didn't have any other options at the time. I had to wait to special order it from a boutique store in Leawood, and they wouldn't get the food in for another week. Next, I went to the Overland Park store. I was floored by the condition of the food. The remaining bags were set to expire in two months and they were frozen solid. If you looked at the food, you could see it clearly had freezer burn. So I looked for a store manager to complain to. I spoke to Debbie in Overland Park and showed her the condition of the food and told her I refused to purchase the food due to improper storing. She acknowledged it wasn't stored properly and said it had been in the freezer section since she started at the location three months prior. She offered to special order bags for me, but I changed my mind after thinking it through, called the location back, and instructed the employee to tell Debbie to cancel the order. Believe it or not, the boutique in Leawood is cheaper and I don't have to worry about them failing to properly store the product. I just don't get how a manager fails to properly inspect refrigerated inventory like this on a regular basis in order to make sure the product's integrity is still intact. Doesn't make me feel comfortable purchasing products from Petco. Proper storage is extremely important when purchasing raw dog food due to health concerns, but it is also important when purchasing it for $30 for a 3.5 lb bag. I purchase four bags at a time, so I am sure you can understand how irritating it is to have $120-$140 in damaged product due to Petco's negligence. I even went as far to complain to the area sales manager with Nature's Variety. The boutique in Leawood put me in touch with him. He said he wasn't surprised; they receive complaints about how Petco stores the food all the time. He said this is why he recommends buying raw dog food from boutiques that sell high volumes of the product, because they don't make these types of mistakes. read more

Petco grooming totally chopped up my beautiful Golden retrievers hair and also had poop on him. Groomers answer was "oh yeah they pooped in there kennel". My question is why they didn't clean it off of him??? Dogs smell horrible and very disappointed. Never bringing my dogs here ever again. read more

Check your pets food BEFORE you purchase it. I placed an online order to be picked up at the Olathe store so I did not have to wonder through the store and pick up the 3 different bags of dog food. Thought this would save time but after driving to the store and picking up the food then going home to put the food into the containers I have for them, I found that one bag was missing the seal. I did not notice this right away because I was cutting the bags open to make it easier to pour into the containers. When I went to pour the Science Diet food I noticed there was a old plastic cup in the bag! I looked at the seal and noticed it was missing. I weighed the bag and it was almost half gone! My guess is someone returned this food and the employees put it back on the shelf! So instead of saving time by purchasing online it took me 2 trips to the store. Lesson learned, don't let the employees pick out your food. The cashier I returned it to said they should have seen that the bag was previously opened. I am sure if I would have picked it up off of the shelf I would have noticed. Back to purchasing my food at Chewy.com read more

I just wanted to buy one bark control device, but it took forever to find someone with keys to unlock the glass case. The price said it was $98, but when I got up to the register rang up at $109. They wouldn't give me the sale price without signing up for the precious rewards membership. Misleading pricing is not good business practice. When will Petco learn that customers just want to buy products without signing up for memberships that only lead to email blasts every four hours? read more

I brought my shiba inu, Pocky, in to get his nails trimmed. I had brought him to Petsmart in Olathe before, but the last couple times the groomer told me the Pocky "was not a fan of getting his nails trimmed" with a snotty face which made me feel like my dog was bad. The associate made us feel welcomed the moment we walked in. I wish I could remember her name! She was great! I could hear Pocky's shiba screams while getting his nails trimmed, but he looked fine. He tends to be a bit dramatic anyways. When I picked him up she assured me he was fine and told me that shibas tend to do that. It made me feel at ease. This is the first time I've ever had my pup groomed and it was a good experience. She looked very nice great, but she got injured and had a tough time walking for a few weeks. The cost seemed a little high at first, but it was worth every dollar for the extra coat blow out they added to lift her fur from her skin for the summer. read more

We have used the vet services at this location to save on the cost of shots and the grooming salon. We are very happy with the store and what they offer. I am very happy with the grooming too. My little girl does not really enjoy us cleaning the little stains under her eyes but the groomer did a wonderful job getting this done for us. They were Al's able to get us in quickly where other groomer were 2 weeks out and after I see the results can't figure out why they are booked ease this store does a better job. I took my puppy to the vetco clinic at this location. I was so impressed! The staff was quick and very helpful in determining what is needed for my pup; especially when I am not a big fan of vets who try to get you to come back for un needed things that puts money in their pocket. I was able to tell the staff information about my pup and they were on it and didn't try to upsell me anything, which I love. When it came time for my pup to get her shots, they were so good with her and calming her. Even though there was a few people waiting, they still made sure to take the time to allow my pup to calm down and took the time to answer any questions that I had. I was also happy with the advice I received about a no pull training collar for my pup since she is a puller. I already had a harness, but she was still pulling. I was able to try the training collar(the one that goes around the nose) in the store and found it worked like a charm. I was so happy that particular one was recommended by the staff to me because now I have a happy son that is excited about walking our dog without being dragged around the block. It was great having such friendly and helpful staff who focused on more on our dog and us and making sure we were happy with what we were getting. read more

Recently my boyfriend and I have been trying to train his dog Moose who is a large Bull Mastiff/ Boxer mix. He mostly needs work on manners and control and we were trying to find him a new collar because we decided to start with just simple walking. We had the most helpful woman help us. Her name was Morgan and she was not only so helpful with finding the right collar but she gave us training tips and helped us find the right class. This Petco is terrible. It's convenient since it's near me but every time I've been here I've experienced terrible customer service. I wish they had self check out to avoid the cashiers. It's not just one person either, I've had to check out with several and they come off as you're an inconvenience to them for buying stuff there. The majority of the staff are rude and I will just start going back to PetsMart. I started coming here for Halo brand food since PetsMart doesn't carry but I will get it at Whole Foods just so I don't have to deal with the people at this store. Both of the Petsmart's in the area are awesome and the Petco on the other side of town is great but not sure what's wrong with the people here. They're always shouting and having conversations while you're checking out and act like you're not there. Also, multiple times I just needed to grab a bag of food and an employee is blocking the aisle so you can't even get to the product. I never write negative reviews but I just left this Petco which will be my last visit and had two terrible employees at the cash wrap complaining to each other about whose cleaning the Ferrett area and didn't even say hello or acknowledge me at the checkout. read more

Unfortunately this is the closest store to me, but I will say I've never had a good experience here. This most recent experience just reminded me to make a review! EVERY single employee is rude, condescending, and arrogant to the point that it's sickening handing them my money when checking out. Don't go here looking for healthy animals to take home, and don't go here looking to have your questions answered, at least more than "I dunno". If you come in, make sure you tell them "THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE" since they act as if they are doing you a favor by being open. I stopped taking my dogs to get groomed here after we found some sort of shear mark or cut by my dog's neck. My dog was continually licking his lower collar/chest area, which we thought was maybe because they put a over sized bandana around his neck after grooming (they had never done this previously, we initially thought it was just a nice gesture). After removing the collar and bandana we found an open sore, the bandana was clearly placed there to hide it. I called the store asking for an explanation, to which I was met with "there's not much we can help you with since you left and did not say anything prior to leaving". Well no duh, that's because it was hidden! Unfortunately these wal-mart style pet stores never have any regard for the animals, which is typical. Beyond that, if you need any assistance, employees tend to intentionally look the opposite direction when they see you may need help. I've literally had to walk around the store following employees to get their attention. This place sucks. Zero stars would be more appropriate. Support small business, it's not like this place or any petco is cheaper (rubber Chinese made dog toys $24....seriously?) At least that way you'll know you aren't contributing to the demise of all the small animals they bring in to die, and the lucky few that make it out alive. Even at that, their poor health leaving Petco usually spells doom days after coming to their new home. This has been my last visit to petco, good riddance. read more

With cold weather setting in we realized that we needed to get our dog groomed instead of bathing him in the backyard like we have been. We have never had him groomed and decided to call local groomers to compare what's offered for what price. Every place I called cooperated and quoted me bath packages with pricing according to my dog's breed. Except for PetCo. I called and the automatic machine said "press '1' for grooming", which I did. After listening to music for 5 minutes it cycled me back to the machine where I pressed '1' again. Listened to music for another 5 minutes. Frustrated this time I pressed '3' for "customer service" where an associate answered after some more lovely music. I told him I had pressed '1' for grooming twice. He said "We do not have groomers here right now" (Note: It's 2pm on a Sunday). I said "ok well you are customer service perhaps you can help me get pricing for a dog grooming." He stated he could not help me with that and to call back tomorrow. I then called the PetCo 800 number to see if they could help me get pricing. Someone with very broken English answered and proceeded to also tell me he could not help me and to call back for groomers on Monday. RIDICULOUS. I guarantee there is a price sheet listed somewhere or a drop down menu on a computer program for them to give me this info. Needless to say, we took our money to a groomer who was happy to help us get a quote. Clearly, PetCo didn't need our business. read more
