I was really surprised to find out there are wineries in South Bay! My friend had her birthday here and it was a really nice picnic and great way to spend the day. She didn't make reservations but showed up at 11am and were able to get a couple tables just fine. Throughout the day (a beautiful Sunday in April), it was always lively but never crowded. You can set up a the picnic tables in the shade, lay a blanket out on the grass in the sun, or go into the winery (I think it actually used to be a barn but is fixed up while retaining its rustic vibe now), or all of the above! There are chickens roaming around everywhere, adding to the rustic farm countryside vibe. The wine tastings are $10 and they have these great red and white ports (they give you bites of these delicious truffles to try with the ports - you can buy them too!). The bottles themselves are really pricey, starting at $50 on the low end. My bf was about to buy a bottle until he saw it was $90. They were also a little short-staffed in the winery earlier on; several people in our group went to do a wine tasting but took a really long time because there was only one guy pouring wine! read more

This winery is located on a reserve which includes a hiking trail, making this place pretty unique if you can get some winetasting and hiking in simultaneously. The tasting room is surrounded by what appears to be a ranch with wide open spaces and picnic tables outside where you can pop open a bottle and enjoy the sun; places like these are always a plus as opposed to the stereotypical pretentious wineries that spend more time making sure their tasting rooms are glamorous with water fountains instead of the quality of their wine. The resident peacock was pretty entertaining as he/she wasn't shy around people and I was able to snap a few photos close-up. Most wineries have resident cats or dogs, but I love how Picchetti has a peacock instead. I just hope the proprietors don't allow them into the tasting room since they have a stuffed peacock on display, that might be a little traumatizing. The tasting room itself is pretty big and spacious with exposed brick walls. There was actually a lot to see in here, including the interesting chandeliers made out of antlers. The whole place had a very Nature channel feel to it. One star was added exclusively for our pourer, Nick. He was probably one of my favorite pourers that day as he was very friendly and laid back, even confessing that although he didn't really know every little detail about the wines, he knew enough to know what was good or bad. He was also very helpful in taking group pictures for us! The wines we tasted here were: - '08 Zinfandel, Picchetti Estate (my favorite) - '09 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bellicitti Vineyard - '07 Cabernet Sauvignon, Leslie's Estate - '07 Teroldego, Mistral Vineyard - '09 Pinot Noir Although the wines themselves weren't all that interesting to me, I still brought back a couple bottles of the '08 Zinfandel as that was a pretty tasty one and my personal favorite. read more

This is such a great place to go wine tasting, without even really leaving San Jose. The Chardonnay and the desert wine were by far my favorites. Considering I never care for desert wines are chardonnays, and I loved these, I think that is saying something. I remember the wine having really decent prices, however after just looking at their website, the prices seem to have jumped. I love going to this winery. The staff is always so friendly. I love the outdoor hiking area, trails, and events that take place there. As a wine member, they definitely treat you well. You get 4-5 tastings for free for your friends or family. I love the variety of whites and reds that they provide. It helps that it's located in the South bay. It's good to know that it's close and that I don't always have to drive to Napa or Sonoma to get my wines. This winery has outdoor picnic areas. Feel free to grab some food and snacks. Fun place to stop on the way back from Ridge Vineyard up the road. Now I have to say I prefer Ridge wine better, but his place was also pretty good, and they have a nice setting too! You park in a gravel lot and then walk past a lawn with picnic tables and chickens (and a peacock) roaming. There are also a few old outbuildings that were probably part of the original winery (or ranch, whatever was there). Whatever they are, it gives the whole place a neat rustic feel. The tasting room is dark inside, but lit up with nifty antler chandeliers and christmas lights. There's actually a lot of bar space but the day we went it happened to be very busy. This also meant that we stood there for 10 minutes before one of the tasting room guys (do they have an official title?) came over and told us we needed to pay at the register for our tasting ($10) BEFORE we could actually have it. I found this a bit strange first because there was nothing indicating this (so it would have been nice to have been told before we stood there for 10 minutes) and second because typically if you buy a bottle the tasting fee is waived, but I guess not here. We didn't end up buying a bottle so we didn't find out. After getting a receipt for our tasting, we stood there another 10 minutes before being asked what we'd like for the first pour. The tasting menu has about 10 or so wines (including a few dessert ones) and you get to choose 5 - we went for all reds. All of them were decent although I can't say I absolutely drooled over any. Again, the range was anywhere from $24-$45 per bottle. The other cool thing about this place is there's a hiking trail right out back! I love Picchetti Winery. It is my favorite winery near home. I came here for a family picnic, an anniversary, and celebrated my birthday here two years in a row! 1) I love how it is very family friendly and you see kids running around or chasing the peacock around. Yes, there is a peacock that everyone loves! 2) It is also very spacious. They added a lot more picnic tables - I would say at least 20 tables overall or even more! There is also a large grass area if you want to have a sit down picnic too. I used two tables this year when I had a party of around 20 people. Not enough room for sitdown, but enough room to put all our food wine glasses, and decorations! 3) The staff is really nice! I had a big party and they let us borrow 2 boxes of wine glasses! When asking for recommendations which wine to get, they are very knowledgable. 4) No reservation fee and they let you bring food in! I called up other nearby wineries in the South Bay and no other winery gives us both of this privileged! I honestly wouldn't even mind paying to reserve the picnic tables since I love this place so much I haven't done the wine tasting here but I did get a case of wine during for my birthday celebration here. On our recent trip to California, my friend booked us a wine tour. Three wineries with 5-10 tastings at each. Picchetti was the first stop on our tour. The tastings take place in the original tasting room that has been around since they winery opened many years ago. Inside, it is decorated like someone's log cabin vacation home and is very welcoming. The staff was friendly and quickly got us setup with some wines. While my friend enjoys white and I enjoy red, neither of us are usually fans of ports. The employee leading our tasting encouraged us to share a port anyway with a piece of homemade fudge. We were proven wrong. This port was absolutely delicious! It was smooth, flavorful, and went well with the sweetness of the fudge. We ended up walking around the property after our tasting and enjoyed the trail that overlooked a good chunk of Santa Clara County. read more

This winery is nice although we didn't get to tour the grounds (if they had any?). We were mostly in the main cabin where we had an open wine bar, which was cool. There wasn't much in terms of tasting, they basically told us what wines they had and off we went. I really liked the wine bottle designs though. When it's busy it can be slow service. We paid for 5 tastings but left after 3 because we only had a half hour to spend after our hike and it didn't seem like anyone was coming back to help. They seemed woefully understaffed. The red wines we did try we're good, but not remarkable. On a warm and sunny day, driving up Montebello Road to Picchetti Winery is one of my favorite activities. The setting is quite bucolic, and it always amazes me how far away from the suburbs I feel--even though I was driving past strip malls and housing complexes just five or so minutes prior. The wines are quite nice - well made, robust flavors, and some interesting varietals you don't find everywhere. The blends are well crafted, too--bold and distinct, they definitely don't taste like a plain ol' "house red" or "house white". I've also been very happy with the staff who run the tasting room. They are friendly and knowledgable, and can answer just about any question you might have about the wine. This is in stark contrast to some places I've visited, where the folks can't answer a question beyond what the script says... and give *you* an odd look if you dared to ask it! Wine tasting fee is reasonable ($10 - first $5 goes back towards one bottle of wine, second $5 back to a second bottle). You can also buy a glass of wine, along with sodas, waters, and quality snacks, and enjoy the picnic tables outside (that is, if you can manage to evade the yellow jackets). Even if you're not drinking, you can enjoy the grounds. Perhaps you'll even run into the resident peacocks and chickens! Pro Tip: Watch out for bicyclists on the way up! I'm always shocked how fast they decide to fly down that road. read more

I had the pleasure of going to a tasting yesterday with some out of town friends who love a good glass of vino. The sun was out and we got there around eleven in the morning just as they were opening for the day. (Yes, they actually open at 11am. Not really at 10am like Yelp says.) Really, that's the earliest I've ever started drinking in the day. (Unless you count those days that I was still drinking at 3am. and then had to schlep myself home still buzzed.) Picchetti Winery is located on Montebello Road in Cupertino. It's a winery so it's actually located close to the back hill area; further down Stevens Creek Blvd. where there's a lot of hiking trails and a creek. I grew up in Cupertino and yet I've never heard of this place. Another interesting find right in my backyard! There's parking where you turn in. You can park in the first level area and also the second tier. Upon walking in, the winery doesn't look like much really. There's a couple of old barns and a small hatchery which houses a chicken and a pheasant. It looks kind of run down and in need of a tune-up. I guess you can call it "rustic-chic?" We walked into the tasting room and I immediately noticed how dimly-lit it is. Our server was both funny and helpful. He told us they house a bunch of the barrels right underneath the room so they have to keep the temperature of the room to a minimum. We each got a tasting flight. The flights are $15 for 5 wines, complimentary for Wine Club members. Out of the 6 wines (He threw in an extra dessert wine for us. So nice.) I really liked the Brut Rosé and the Mission Angelica. I'm partial to Rosé. We were given a few pieces of chocolate to eat with the dessert wine and the taste was really elevated. (Usually at home, I pair it with strawberries or blueberries.) They weren't high-end chocolates, but it was still a nice touch. read more

What a lovely winery. Found out it is female owned. The landscaping is just so picturesque. I hear that parking can be annoying during the busy season. Your best time to receive intimate service is during the weekdays. Granted you need to be off from work. There are trails for you to hike, and grass to picnic on. They have a food truck come out once in a while. If you are a club member, you receive up to 3 free wine tastings at a time. I was lucky enough to go with my friend who is a member. This is a great place for a picnic, since they have plenty of tables and a nice outdoor area. The tasting room has a great atmosphere as well, and the staff who work there are all very professional and friendly. Most importantly, they have some fabulous wines and I can't help but say that I really like their bottle designs too! We love Picchetti Winery because it is close to our home, the wine is great and we love to picnic and hike in the surrounding hills. Truly unique. We like to stop at the nearby Trader Joe's on the way to get bread and cheese for a picnic on the picnic tables just outside the winery doors. This picnic space is also often used for events like weddings. We have needed to find alternative picnic spots recently due to the events. Tastings are $15 per person for 5 wines. Wine club members receive one tasting per month for 4 people. As with all other wineries, the wines are somewhat expensive, ranging from $25 to $75 per bottle. Wine club members get up to a 33% discount (if they buy a case) and are required to purchase 2 bottles per quarter to stay in the club. Picchetti Winery is connected to the Picchetti Ranch Preserve, a part of the Mid-Penninsula Open Space District. There is a network of hiking trails that start in the winery parking lot. Trails are open to hikers and equestrians but unfortunately not bikes or dogs. read more

Picchetti has a gorgeous setting at the base of Montebello just a short drive from suburban Cupertino. Their expansive grounds are home to some peacocks which can make your visit pretty interesting if you can handle the awful screams they make. I saw one fly for the first time on my visit yesterday. The wine at Picchetti, unfortunately, can be very hit or miss. And, yesterday was a miss. In fact, some the wines were pretty damn awful, particularly the Zin. It was fairly cool yesterday morning in the large old building that houses their wine tasting room and the reds they were pouring were a little too chilled. On top of all of this, they attach some pretty premium prices to their wine which I fell is unwarranted. So, two stars for the wine + one star for the setting & the peacocks. read more

I was introduced to Picchetti Winery last weekend through some friends and it is essentially a mini Napa experience hidden in the Bay Area. You can drive directly there or take a 2 mile hike detour, fittingly called the "Zinfandel Trail," which leads to the heavenly doors of their wine tasting room. With my small party of four, we decided to take this route. We lucked out with the weather and enjoyed a Sunday full of sunshine. The hike is a comfortable trail, and when I say, "comfortable," I mean you could probably take your walker-free grandma with you. The trail passes along the whole nature spiel of peaceful waterfall streams, exquisite greenery, even overlooks the Steven Creeks Reservoir but most importantly it leads you to WINE! A hiking trail with a beautiful view and happy destination checks off everything in my book. Pinchetti Winery offers a $15 tasting where you are able to try 5 pours of their wide variety of award winning wines. Our host was generous enough to even throw in a couple extra tastings because my party was sharing, so we ended up trying the entire selection. I really like their White Pavoc, Rose and the Cabernet that is on their wine club list. Tip: they do not provide any food there, but upon discovery they have picnic table areas outside where people brought their own food. Cheese and crackers will most definitely be a priority for next time. read more

Such a disappointment! Been going there for at least 15 years. Even rented out the place for a corporate event and again for a birthday party. When I visited with my family last year the place was packed which is fine. I bought some wine (at a discount being a member) and picnicked with my family. A nice "couple" came up us all nice and sweet and asked us how we were doing and proceeded to chit chat for a minute. Then they stated they were employees and pointed out the beer we had and began to sternly tell is that they would have to ask us to leave if we didn't get it out of there right away. Didn't matter that we were members and purchased wine, the Picchetti Gestapo must be obeyed! Well thank you very much Pinchetti or whoever the heck you are now! Came here, first time, with a group of 10 last weekend. Loved the grounds. The staff in the tasting room were very nice and friendly. There were plenty of picnic tables and to our surprise, lots of family with little kids since most wineries we go to in the area do not allow kids. It was such a nice day out so everyone had a great time on the lawn. Pack a blanket as there are lots of shaded areas to relax on. We will definitely come back with our families next time. This place is a secret gem right in Cupertino... a stone's throw from my friend's place. There's nice hiking to be had with a trailhead right by the winery. There's also a little lake and a rod & gun club nearby... my friend is such a lucky bastard. The wine was good, maybe a tad expensive for what you're getting -- maybe because its a small boutique winery. But I joined their wine club anyway. Its 2 bottles, roughly $60, every 3 months. That's a small price to pay to help support a local winery. The 2005 Super Tuscan was pretty good, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. The wine pours are so tiny, half of it gets stuck in my cavities and I couldn't even fully taste the wine. If you're a club member you can bring 3 friends for free wine tasting every month, otherwise its five bucks. Too bad I only have 2 friends in the world, and one of them is imaginary. $5 to taste pretty much all of their wines. Unfortunately, all of them are table wine quality. They offer all sorts of wine, and they don't grow their own grapes except for Zin (if I remember correctly). And their wines are all small production. What does that tell me? 1) They get grapes from many different vineyards who would never consider them as VIP due to small volume purchase. 2) They cannot possibly perfect in any kind of wine because they lack focus and make very little each year. Very low learning curve. 3) Hence, no wonder their wines weren't good. The tasting room is very crowded and they serve the wine in an OJ glass. Horrible. read more

My friend found this place when she googled shady hikes in the south bay. The winery is located at the edge of an open preserve area. So we did a short less than 2 mile hike behind the winery before we did some tastings. The main tasting room is he room that looks like it used to be a barn. They decorated it with twinkly lights and I think you can rent it out as a wedding or special occasion venue too. Anyways you pay first and then saddle up to the bar, where the bartender will pour you some wine. Each tasting is $15 for 5 pours. Unfortunately the pours are tiny. Compared to what I've seen in Livermore and Napa. Like 3-4 sips only. We tried the chardonnay, malbec, pinot, and all three of the dessert wines between the three of us. I liked the chardonnay and pinot the best. The dessert wines were interesting - mostly too sweet. The porter did come with a tiny one bite of fudge. One was served over ice with a lemon twist too. If you purchase a bottle of wine, they're credit you $5 from the tasting toward the wine. Wines are about $30-60 a bottle and there's a couple that are more expensive that are wine club exclusives. They also have a bunch of picnic tables set up along the property and most of them are in the shade. People bring picnics and food. And you can buy a bottle of wine inside and they'll let you borrow some wine glasses to use. A cool place to hang out for the day. John could not be more down-to-earth, helpful and better-informed.
