In the annex is one of many new 'hipster' cafés (jam jars instead of glassware is a dead giveaway) that have been opening recently everywhere. Whilst the interior is beautiful, for me this is a place that you will either love (my housemate swears by their coffee and breakfast burrito) or be indifferent towards. Unfortunately, I'm in the latter category. I should start by saying I'm a fairly simple soul - I look for good food that is reasonably priced when I eat out. While the Annex does do good food, their menu is very very limited (as they don't really have a kitchen to cook anything). Last time I went there were literally only one or two things I would consider ordering off it. Admittedly that was the Xmas menu, but I still remember it being like that before as well. Coupled with the limited options some of the food can be on the more expensive side (for what you get). If you like coffee I think you will probably love this place, if you're like me then you could be a bit indifferent to the whole thing and find yourself thinking about the $5 burgers next door...

Whether or not it was influenced by being my first stop for coffee this morning or just a damn fine experience, I am really happy that I ended up here. Started off with a batch brew made with Nicaraguan single origin from Sample Coffee Roasters. It was much darker than I would normally expect from Sample, but with this darkness came a really nice body and slight english breakfast finish. Unfortunately as the coffee was getting on a bit, many of the florals had flown, but what was left was still a very enjoyable start to the day. But then when the Umami long black came out, the aroma almost had me salivating. A robust and smooth body, it had a perfect balance highlighted with light florals and light winey back end to make it all worthwhile. Basically...yum. (The coffee cup was cute to!) The food I chose was the chicken tacos. The chicken was very tender and matched well with spicy mayo sauce. The only problem was it was a bit difficult to eat with hands like other tacos. This café has a cool contemporary ambience with friendly service. Other dishes in their menu look very interesting as well. Since the café is located in an office building, it might be a bit tricky to find this place for the first-timers.

The Green Bowl is a vegan dish so actually originally doesn't come with eggs, and is made up of all sorts of greens like kale, asparagus, avocado, peas, cucumber, etc. I've heard from somewhere kale being described as angry lettuce, it needs to be tamed to be delicious, and I couldn't agree more. Here it was incredibly tame and cooked perfectly to be enjoyed with all the other ingredients and turned out to be a very healthy, delicious bowl of goodness. Kind of like eating a garden; a green garden. And of reasonable price and quantity.

There is a nice smoke aroma as we enter the courtyard and we notice that they have a BBQ smoker in action, with the kitchen staff continually checking on it. They smoke all of their meat in house. We were informed that the smoking process was in New York style inspired by Katz deli. We were here for brunch so perectly acceptable to order the fried chicken and waffles. The chef is of Japanese heritige and once worked as a pastry chef at Sepia. Drawing on this to produce a beatiful light waffle and a crispy house smoked chicken karage.
