When you come to Pittsburg Kansas and ask "Where's a good place to eat?" You're likely to hear Pitchler's Chicken Annie's. First, it's a damn interesting name. Who's Pichler and who's Annie? If you dine there, read the back of the menu and you'll be educated. Secondly, if you drive by you'll likely see the place surrounded with cars and pickup trucks. That's usually a good sign. Our party of five waited about 15 minutes for a table at 5:30 pm. Not bad on a Saturday night. Seating is at mostly larger tables, and the entire place has a bit of a multi-room cafeteria feel. Comfortable, but a bit chopped up and crowded. They're not striving for romantic dinners. We started out with an order of their Onion Rings. Do not skip this step! And make it a large! You'll thank me for that tip. Ordering the chicken is a bit confusing, especially when your server tells you that the two thigh, one drumstick dinner is their white meat option (bless her, she said "This is my first week, I'm still learning the menu."). The chicken is very good - crispy, tender, and juicy. But don't expect large. These pieces must come from a five pound bird. The sides I ordered were their house coleslaw and potato salad. Both old German recipes. I'd recommend skipping these. The slaw was garlic heavy and sour and the potato salad had very little taste. It's not that they're wrong, just unexpected and not that good for my taste. But you may feel differently. Somehow these recipes have survived for decades! Overall, I rated Pichler's above average. It's an experience with good chicken, good service, great onion rings, and a damn interesting name! read more

ALRIGHT. After many years of seeing the damn signs, I stopped in while I was in town overnight. Per the townies, Pichler's is better than the original--and don't even go to Mary's because ownership has changed and the recipe isn't the same. We got in right at opening, and by the time that we left at 1230, it was looking pretty busy. We ordered and waited for a good 20 min before our meal came out. The ice they use is very crushed, almost a slush. Chicken is steaming hot and super fresh. Nice crunch. The batter seasoning is rather plain, but salted. Loved their green beans and coleslaw. Definitely had a nice home town feel for a restaurant! Even our waitress was amazing! Those onion rings they send out as a complimentary appetizer are possibly the best I've had yet. Fried chicken was well seasoned and very moist. As for the sides I literally loved their coleslaw, so crisp yet refreshing with a nice zing from the vinegar. Okay, the chicken joints like this one are a SE Kansas tradition going back almost 100 years. However, they need to make one nod to modernity: stop passing off the stupid backs as a legit piece of chicken. I kid you not, when we came in tonight there was a sign advertising 10 backs for $1. This "special" might be Cousin Eddie's greatest fantasy, but in real life it's a waste of breading, garlic salt, and vegetable oil. We ordered a family style dinner and guess what? Pittsburg the fried chicken Mecca of Kansas!!!! In town for GetBusyLivin 5k and had eaten here many of times. The service is always phenomenal....the food is top notch delicious. Usually when in town I eat Chicken Mary's... however we were on this side of town and hunger was calling. They had no wait on a Friday night and the place was getting busier. The host staff & family owners greeted us with a smile. Our server got our drinks and onion rings under way. Gave us time to look over the menu. (Hadn't been here in a while) The rings came our hot and fresh.... Oh so delicious! Miller lites were ice cold - always a bonus. Our chicken came out hot and crispy just to my liking and of course I over ordered to have take home chicken! The sides were stellar...I can't get enough of the German potato salad. Well, this was on my bucket list a long time. We stopped here on a trip to KC recently. It was near their closing time on a Sunday evening, so maybe that had something to do with the experience. We were seated promptly and started out with some onion rings. They are more like onion strings, but a bit thicker. They were pretty good - my dinner partner really liked them. I ordered the 4-pc dark and my buddy got a piece of dark and a breast. My two drumsticks and thighs were cooked fine, but they were not very big pieces. Breading stuck to the meat which is a good sign (versus falling off when you bite), but I would not say it was all that flavorful. My friend said the breast was dry - hard to fry or cook breasts, and, again we were there at closing time so perhaps it was out a while. Sides were ho-hum, but we were there for the chicken honestly. I had some cole slaw and spaghetti. My friend had mashed potatoes and potato salad. The service was very good, but overall I suppose my years of anticipation were just not met. I suppose if I just grabbed an 8-piece of chicken only and focused on it solely, my opinion might be different. Oh, and no dessert offerings. A nice hot homemade cherry cobbler might have earned another star! I'll give it another try not at quitting time and see how it goes. read more

We had the Family Style meal for two which included onion rings, six pieces chicken, German slaw and potato salad, bread n butter and spaghetti. WOW. My wife didn't pull her share of the load, and though I tried, I couldn't clean it all up. The onion rings were classic Chicken Annie rings. The chicken was well seasoned and moist---and my wife noted that it was DONE. The slaw was great. The potato salad had too much potato for the amount of German dressing. It is comfortable here, nonetheless, and you get a bread basket with butter shortly after. Yummy ~ to the stringy onion rings...can I have a couple sides of ranch dressing to dip everything I order in it including our onion rings and fried chicken, please?? Very nice service here. Prices are average. Sides are ok. Now about the bird. It's nothing to crow about. I was so excited to try this place only to be served up some crispy Swanson frozen chicken TV dinner. Typically 40 yrs ago that wasn't such a bad thing. This is mediocre at best on the fried bird meter. It's sad to think so many consider this great fried chicken. Fried chicken is their own style , juicy with thin, crispy coating and a hint of garlic. For 3 or 4 diners try the family style dinner at a great price and you'll leave happy! The waitress took our glasses to refill the tea. My partner was putting lemon in his tea. When the waitress brought our glasses back the one she gave me tasted of lemon on the first drink so obviously I was given my partners tea glass. The ladies restroom was totally out of toilet paper on both rolls as well as out of paper towels. I really miss eating here. Some of the best fried onions I've eaten anywhere. I don't know what they do differently in their chicken batter, but It is to die for. Family owned business, that's been around for as long as I can remember, and the quality has never declined. I've driven through and slept in the parking lot for a couple of hours waiting for the doors to open just to get a to go order. I wish they would consider opening franchise stores in KC or OKC. Completely underwhelmed. Chicken came out cold for several in our party. They have this neat little "thing" where they bring your side salad AFTER you get your plated entree. Who wants their salad at that point? Unbelievably busy on Saturday night and I am wondering why so many folks eat here. I've eaten at this place on and off since they first opened at this location. After moving out of state it was a "must visit"'with family for dinner when I was in town. I have to say I was very disappointed this time. The pieces of chicken were extremely small. When asked about it, two in our party were brought one more extremely small piece. For those that don't know SE KS rocks for fried chicken. I really don't have a favorite and have been to them all. This one is right close to a main intersection so you don't have to wander out in the wilderness to find it like the others. My server was great. She was quick and efficient. I started with some onion rings and they came out very quickly. They are nicely breaded and have great onion flavor. My only ding here is that they only bring out some bottled ketchup to go with these. I just wished they would dig a little deeper with a sauce that compliments the onion rings a bit more depth than ketchup out of a bottle. I also placed my order for some fried chicken, German potato salad and cottage cheese and it came out pretty quickly. The fried chicken was piping hot and I love the crispy crust. The fried chicken was also juicy and flavorful so absolutely no complaints there. I love German potato salad. This stuff was also good but it had a bit much vinegar where it turned my tongue a little bit towards the bitter side. I still ate all of it. The cottage cheese was something you get anywhere.
