My wife and I had reason to use this as an exit during a weekday jaunt to K-town. The station was the one of the largest (and deepest) stations that we've visited. Because of the depth of the station, it had escalators in both directions, with each working on this day. It is over 75 feet below street level, with the lowest level platform being for Westbound trains and the middle level being for trains going Eastbound toward Union Station. It's also the last station before the B and D lines diverge (D going further into K-town and ultimately to UCLA in the future, and B continuing to Hollywood). It has the new full length plexiglass saloon style doors, installed sometime in 2025 (probably when the D line was shut down as part of the West line extension). LA Metro is rolling out their 'Tap-to-Exit' program across some of their stations. I thought it was meant to implement variable tolls, but reading that it's to increase security and non-payers. Also for the first time, Metro security came onboard at a stop, and requested that all passengers get their TAP cards ready for fare inspection...have not seen this before for folks REMAINING on the train at a stop.

Westlake & MacArthur Park is an often problem child of the Red / Purple Line Metro station…read more I've only gotten on here a few times, rarely off... but the platform itself is almost never ever busy, but this station and I have issues, especially during the day (lunch time)... However absolutely on weekends when the blocks surrounding it are like are like the most congested parts of Downtown LA (ie Fashion District - Santee Alley on a Sunday or Saturday... If you know... You know).... So many outdoor vendors, local shops and of course the famous Langer's Deli/Restaurant encircling this station. Being not far from Echo Park at all I've actually walked from their over on nice weather days, definitely better post 2020 and 2021 and slow strides toward upkeep have me more optimistic. The escalators are down a lot compared to other stations and the elevators are a down more than half the times I've been, but again I've seen more efforts to keep things cleaner and flowing. The postdemic clean up project for MacArthur Park and even Echo Park Lake I think set a precedent for a lot in the area. It's definitely not a station I'm proud of, but it gets a passing grade, more so in 2023 than ANY previous years.

So after getting comfortable with parking at Atlantic Station and riding the train to the Coliseum, I suddenly no longer need to do so in the near future, because you can bet I won't go to a USC game--especially at the Coliseum--if it's not against Notre Dame. The E Line is great, though. For those of you who don't know, the current E Line is a combination of the former Expo Line in almost its entirety and the Downtown-to-East L.A. portion of the former Gold Line. Metro dug some additional underground tunnels, joined the formerly separate train lines, and now you can travel from Atlantic Station in East L.A. to Downtown Santa Monica Station all on a single fare, without having to change trains. I've never traveled the entirety of the line, but I'm very familiar with the eastern portion. The E Line will become even more useful to me and my family in the future, too, because they plan to run it all the way to Whittier, across the street from the hospital where I was born. For now, it's still useful to me for King games at Staples Center. I've never actually taken it to one, but it's much less hectic to park in Atlantic Station's parking garage than it is to look for street parking downtown--I refuse to pay to park for King games--and the walk from the arena itself to Pico Station is short and direct. When you do ride this line from Atlantic through Exposition Park and back, it's really interesting just to see how many people board and off-board at seemingly random times. The train can go from full to the gills to almost empty in a few stops, only to fill back up two more stops down the line. In other words, a lot of people use the E Line for not only long hauls but to go short distances. It's truly a train line of and for the people.

A very direct and convenient stop if you're looking to come to campus, or if you're looking to visit the California Science Center on the other side. On weekends, or for major event days, there are ambassadors and sometimes officers that will be standing by the TAP entry gates. Just be sure to tap your fare and you're good to go. Platforms are in the middle of the roadways. You come through by walking over the tracks. There are no safety entry gates like other major stations, so watch the road before you cross over. Safety is always first!

I was prepared to watch three or four trains arrive and leave before we boarded, but thankfully, I was wrong. I should also mention that while I was crestfallen at the sight of so many people waiting just for the eastbound train, I was also pleasantly surprised that so many L.A. locals would even deign to ride a Metro train, let alone to a USC game. So I was hopeful for the future long-term, but annoyed at what my next hour would be like. Well, all those people lined up in the (still closed-off) street waiting to board the train? They were well behaved, and the "line"--more of a loose clump--moved smoothly as the Metro workers allowed people onto the platform. My worst fears weren't realized, for we boarded the second train that arrived. We happened to end up right in front of a car's rear doors, so my dad and I got seats while everyone else sardine-canned it. Thankfully, most people got off within a few stops, and I wondered at the fact that it seemed like all but two game attendees (USC fans) made it all the way to Atlantic Station, where we also disembarked and saw other USC and Irish fans from other cars on the same train. Now that I've taken Metro's 480 bus from Norwalk Station, Metro's J Line bus from Harbor Freeway Station and Metro's E Line train from Atlantic Station to USC games, I can accurately compare them. I prefer the train just because you're guaranteed a seat at least on the way to the game (and for most of the way back), but the bus stop for both the 480 and the J Line is closer to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum than either of the E Line USC-specific stations, including this one, and most people who use the bus use the J Line rather than the 480. As a station, it's fine. They've made it about as long as possible, and the platform is very roomy so that you don't feel like you'll fall onto the tracks if more people crowd on behind you. They could use more fare machines. About those fares: It's too confusing to add specific amounts to your TAP card. Be aware that if you're adding a special fare, you'll have to go through two transactions rather than being able to add a round-trip fare easily, or maybe it's just too confusing to do a round-trip fare. If you did only buy a one-way fare on the way to this station, I suggest purchasing your return fare right before you leave the station rather than waiting for when you return. You already know what I think of slashes (/'s) in public-transit-station names.

No Express service, doesn't dozens of stops. Over all the train is very clean, but occasionally a filthy, weed smelling person will climb on board. The train goes over and through some of the most dangerous parts of Los angeles. It's a great way to see the city. For tourists, I think it's perfect. It provides a lot of scenery and it gets you to the central part of Los Angeles where the museums and other attractions are located. You can even get all the way from Long Beach to Hollywood and Vine streets.

The lady at the counter was nice and friendly. After verifying the info, she processed the paperwork and handed me temporary IDs that the kids can start using until the permanent cards are mailed out. Takes about 5-6 weeks or so.

It almost feels like an airport terminal because of all the vendors in the station. I'll be honest I've never actually been inside until recently. But in the last couple of weeks, I've used this station multiple times now. My experience centers around the fact that the World Cup is in town. I've used this train to head down to USC for a Fan fest, I've used it to head to Koreatown for the large Mexico versus South Korea match. And once I learned how to buy or put money on my Tap card this train station is really easy to use. There's also a large screen in the main terminal playing all the World Cup matches, and there's some installations outside and on the inside It makes you hopeful for the train system in Los Angeles get even better because I'm becoming more of a fan using the Metro
