*** 4.5 stars *** We went to Pico during COVID so we experienced it as a take out restaurant, which I do not think is how it's intended to be experienced. Rounding up to 5 because I'm certain that if we had dined in it would have been a 5 star experience. That being said, we did wait for our food in the restaurant (which was stunning) and they gave us each a glass of delicious house red (award winning house red, that is) while we waited for our order (now that's what I call hospitality!). The portions seemed kind of small for the price when shoved into a to-go box, but I'm sure would have made sense if served on a proper dish. The clam chowder was to die for. Tonight's experience came across as a tough night in the kitchen at Pico. We hosted some close friends from NYC who came to the Central Coast on their first trip outside of The Big Apple since The Wuhan Virus hit 13 months ago. A weekend celebration capped off by a night out at Pico. Table side service was excellent. George was engaging and attentive, and was comfortable and very familiar with the menu. The bar service was first class, and my vodka martini was mouth watering good. The rest of the dinner party were equally complimentary of their cocktails. The wine list? Stunning. Our starters were delicious. The stuffed avocado and crispy fried Brussels sprouts were lick-the-plate good! Regrettably, dinner was disappointing for me. I believe the problem occurred in the kitchen, as perhaps our order got lost in the shuffle?? I don't know. Our food took a while. The hostess (sommelier) stopped by at one point and informed us things were slow. Okay. Good to know. We're enjoying the evening, no problem. However, when the main courses finally came, 2 of the 4 meals were cold, notably the wagyu beef and the tostada. I stopped eating after one bite of the steak, and several bites of the tostada. When I told the hostess (sommelier) about my meal, she replied, "The tostada was meant to be cold." Really? And the Wagyu beef?? That response was mind boggling. To the staff's credit, we were offered a free dessert, a complimentary digestif, and even another entree, all of which we declined. Our friends who so graciously picked up the tab, noted that the wagyu was removed from the bill, as well as the corkage fee. This was much appreciated. Pico is a fine restaurant. Probably wouldn't return again. Portions were on the smallish side. Both the burrata and the mussels came with two too-small crescent-shaped slices of bread (toasted over gas) for spreading cheese and dipping broth. Both breads were gone before the appetizer was. We asked for more and were told that they "don't really do more bread." The server suggested that if we wanted bread to eat the appetizers we had already ordered, we could order a *third appetizer* of foccacia. (Remember to order additional appetizers, if you wish to enjoy some appetizers.) And that's my experience in a nutshell: ungenerous. Pico isn't there for you, you're there for Pico. read more

Ahhh we came here 6 months ago for the first time and it was stellar. Now we came back to the area for a getaway and we immediately made a reservation to go back to pico for our one dinner while in town. I should have known when left at the check in table for 10 minutes. Staff was avoiding eye contact and letting us stand there awkwardly. When we finally sat down, we gave our drink and full meal orders. Drinks and app came out fairly on time, but then we waited almost 90 minutes for our entrees. The table next to us said they had been waiting for 2 hours so they gave up and left. Food finally came and it was fine but def not worth the wait. I want to say this was just a night off for them as the inside tables were packed and seemed like they were being tended to. We were staying in town in Los Alamos for the first time. There are only a few restaurants in the area and I had no idea what to expect when I walked in here. We were pleasantly surprised how good the food was. The cocktails were unique and they have a great wine list. I ordered the Apples and Honey cocktail which was good. I also ordered the Lumen library flight since I wanted to try some local wines. We had the burrata and the citrus crudo for appetizers which were really good. For an entree I ordered the Winter Risotto was very good. Our server Misty was great as well. If you're in the area this is a great place to have a good meal. read more

Had one of the best meals here. Beautiful interior, amazing wait staff, incredible food. The white sardines were a literal explosion of flavors. The bacon appetizer was equally as good. Beautiful wedge salad...not what you'd expect. For the mains we had steak and Agnolotti. If I had been home alone I would have licked the plate. For dessert, order the churros. It takes a lot for me to leave a negative review (just check my Yelp history), but I was very disappointed in the food and service on 7/20/24. It was a Saturday, so we tried to make a reservation, but all that was available (using the online platform) was for 8:15 p.m. I scheduled it, but my friend and I decided we'd go in person and see if we could get a table earlier, and arrived at 6:00 p.m. There were at least 3 empty seats at the bar, and two high-top tables behind the hostess station that seated 4 each, and almost ALL the tables were empty. We were greeted by a young man who said he couldn't seat us as they were booked with large parties, but he'd get the hostess . The hostess said she couldn't seat us for that same reason, but she'd check with someone else, and brought over a third person. She and he discussed amongst themselves and then told us we could "wait" at the high-top tables and order a drink for now, that was it. My friend and I agreed. After 20 minutes or so (we had been served our crémant ) we were approached again by the bartender who asked if we wanted to order. We said yes, if we could, but had been told we were to "wait". He went and "checked with someone", came back, and said we could order. Great! We were famished and had been about to gulp our $18 bubbly just to run to Del Taco. We both ordered the exact same meal, the steak cooked same way, which came cooked properly, but with no sauce, just salt. The potatoes were underdone (at least mine were; I was so annoyed I didn't say anything to my friend or ask her how hers was), and the salad was just a pile of arugula with oil, vinegar and salt. This was in no way a $55 meal. The bartender who served us gave us good service. That's it. Will I go back? I will have to think long and hard about it. Oh, and while people did come in for their reservations, there absolutely was room for us to have been served, either at a table, or at the bar itself, instead of the narrow high-top table that WASN'T EVEN WIDE ENOUGH TO HOLD OUR DINNER PLATES PROPERLY-- they hung over the edge. We really wanted to love this place. We stayed next door. We read the reviews. It was gonna be great. Celebrating my moms bday. One of our peeps doesn't eat pork or beef. We ordered wine. The wine list is beyond extensive. 5 stars to the wine list and the sommelier. The apps: we ordered the Brussels, the crudo and the persimmon burrata. Mixed reviews but in general we each liked one more than the others. Dinner: we opted for family style and ordered the pork shank, steak, casarecce and salmon. The pork was cooked very well but did not have enough flavor in the actual meat. Steak was great, sauce and greens were divine. Salmon was good. Went fast. Couscous was fun. Pasta was everyone's least favorite. Had a distinct citrus forward taste that offset the carrot and peas and was not fulfilling. Dessert: small! We ordered the lava and the affogato. The Pumpkin pie on the menu was unavailable. Satisfied the sweet ending. Not really sweet. Mostly bitter chocolate or coffee flavors. Not bad. Just satisfied. Overall we had a party of 5 and 3 of us would hesitate to return. Can't say enough great things about the atmosphere and the location. Both were great. The meal just left us meh. I'm sorry. Stopped here on a whim on our way to LA and couldn't have been more delighted! Beautiful aesthetic down to the last detail. They let us sit with our dog in their adorable courtyard. Our cocktails were incredible, food even more so. Everything was bright and fresh. I had tuna tartare expertly wrapped in avocado, and my husband loved his white anchovy dish. Service was attentive and friendly. We both agreed that we will absolutely return on our next trip! read more

Chef's experience was amazing. Came in on a Sunday night and the intimate ambiance was perfect for special occasion dinner that allowed for questions and conversations with our attentive server Case. Kudos to him in particular as the wine pairings were exploratory for those of us who are open to allowing the magic to happen. Second kudos to accommodating a vegetarian. Thanksgiving Dinner- we waited a long time with big expectations. The meal was excellent! After eating dinner, our waitress brought us the check and I asked what about dessert? She then asked us back ' you didn't have it?'. We said no. She continued to push acting like we were lying. At least four times she questioned us. This was completely inexcusable and a horrible behavior. We were both so upset. We didn't even eat the dessert after that . We just paid and left. She just ruined a good dinner! read more

I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Pico, which has a comprehensive list of appetizers, small dishes, and main courses. The wine menu is extensive, and there are selections for everyone. While I did not try the cocktails, I would be back. Ok, onto the food.. oh the cornbread. I really could eat that all day. With berries for breakfast, with ham for lunch, and on its own with dinner. Or dessert. Seriously, its good. The texture has the right softness and some grit from the cornmeal used. The flavor is lightly sweetened with honey but the corn meal used and the flavor of corn shines through. I was very tempted to order a second loaf for the table, but I showed restraint. We also had the little gem salad, which, in and of itself is a gem of flavor through simplicity. Its non fussy, lettuce, raddish, and vinaigrette. The treatment of proteins here for main courses is excellent. Then for dessert we had an apple crumble that wasn't a standard preparation of the dish. The flavor of apples was able to shine through compared to butter and spice. The crumble also gave an excellent textural contrast. My wife and I had made a dinner reservation here on Sunday, November 10th, following a local winery event. From the moment I walked in, the ambience, decor & lighting were outstanding - only to be matched by the ensuing food and service. Brilliant. We have been on the road for a couple of weeks and this is the best meal of the trip so far. And, dare I say, the best fried chicken I have ever had? (Apologies to my southern grandmother). The Brussels sprouts were unique. How often do you hear that? Shaved thin and fried and combined with root veggies and a light splash of a homemade dressing. And the truffle fries taste like they were made with truffles instead of potato, but are perfectly crisp and deliciously truffley. One of the best meals I have ever had. I came here for dessert and had their custard gelato. It's probably one of the most confusing and interesting desserts I've had in a long time. I want to start off saying I'm not even a gelato fan so when I ordered their deconstructed pie my eyes popped open almost immediately. I could not put my finger on this gelato, it was almost like a cheesecake but in gelato form and it definitely had the feeling of a comforting custard. They serve "ketchup" with it but it's not Heinz. I added smoked avocado to mine which was a taste like no other. The chefs specialty burger is totally over the top and huge huge huge and glad we didn't order. Ask what it is to see if you're up to the task although it sounded spectacular. So the food itself was a service recovery. And at the very end, the chef came over and talked with us. What a charming talented man! I'm sure there are many more secrets but they grind all their beef fresh and use brisket, rib eye and short rib and what I believe may be the ultimate...fry in duck fat! Everyone at the table agreed best burgers ever. Hands down. So five star in food but lose one star for the long wait. When you only have 3 burgers on the menu for a main option it shouldn't take that long, especially as the place wasn't full. But you know what? It was worth the wait and we'd do it again! read more

Spent a great evening at Pico. The restaurant, bar, and outdoor seating are beautiful and well laid out and the atmosphere is fantastic. Our party of 4 sampled the beets, oysters, kale Cesar, Shrimp, Duck, Burrata, and my personal highlight the Steak Frites. Everything was fresh and had excellent flavor, I really couldn't ask for much more. Several more recent reviews made us apprehensive to try Pico vs our Los Alamos favorite Bell's... in my opinion they were mis directed. The new Chef and his staff are producing excellent food that rivals or exceeds many restaurants in the Valley and Santa Barbara/Montecito. We will be coming back regularly and I'm hopeful more people give this restaurant and Chef a chance. read more

I made a reservation with Pico online and when I arrived, I was greeted with some of the best service. The backyard had many tables with plenty of space in between. I was checked on by the host, my server, and others who fixed the heater next to me. Every table had a heater nearby. They had string lights and a beautiful view at sunset. To the food, it was all amazing. I had a glass of wine, the truffle fries at happy hour price (50% off), and the homemade beet ziti pasta with whipped goat cheese, basil pesto, pistachios, etc. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the flavor and texture of the dish was excellent. First time to the area we were told Pico was amazing so we made our reservations early on. To say we were disappointed is a understatement. Our waitress was great in the beginning and then disappeared after taking our order,45 mins later we were wondering where our entrees were I waved down our MIA waitress and she said oh your order is up next! Then a manager stopped by to ask how everything was we mentioned our entrees were taking a long time. I had the Linguini with a tomato sauce and my husband the steak and frites. Let's start with my pasta it was terrible the sauce tasted like it was a plain tomato sauce from a jar to be served to a child I took a few bites and didn't even finish the dish when the waitress came to the table she did not ask If I liked the meal that was obviously not eaten and my husband steak had so much grizzle's and so flavorless even when dipping in the horseradish worst meal and cost us $120 with two glasses of wine will not be returning. Disappointed!! Left feeling hungry. I'm writing this review with a very heavy hand. Pico used to be one of my favorite restaurants. The former chef (John Wayne) was, in my opinion, a master. His menu always changed but there was continually inventive and interesting dishes with the most amazing flavors. The menu was priced very reasonably, from a $21 burger (the best ever), to the $9 plate of fries, a changing pasta dish in the $20's and an incredible salmon at $32. Those days are over... Enter a new chef...and while we didn't love the price increases on the menu (fries are now $14, fish is $42 and a steak frite, which is $26 everywhere else, is $44!!!) we wanted to give it a try. We are not ones to shy away from paying for a great dining experience. Sadly, this wasn't. To begin with, I went home very hungry. I split a gorgeous and very reasonably priced salad and opted for the $42 branzino as my main. It was hole, which is fine, but I had to scrape the flesh off and the bones often ended in my mouth. The fish was small and there is no way I got anywhere near even a quarter of a pound! NO way! It came with 4 half sized asparagus and a dollup of romesco. It was tasty BUT the portion was for a baby. Nothing else on the plate! How does someone charge $42 for a very small piece of fish that didn't have any preparation to it? The others at our table were equally disappointed. Our friend called the steak "gristly." The two guests who got that entree felt it was undercooked and there were ZERO juices that normally accompany that type of meat that season the fries. Such a waste. What is truly disappointing is this spot is a wonderful, cozy and really cool space. More importantly, the staff are amazing. Maria at the bar is a huge talent and on top of her game as a mixologist. The wait staff and management are so nice and accommodating. It truly pains me to say that unless the menu changes, I won't be dining there again. After spending nearly $200 on dinner, I went home hungry. read more

Went here to celebrate a special event with my family. My brothers favorite place. Everyone loved their food, a few must gets: truffle fries - yes! The roasted brussel sprouts starter - awe-mazing! Outside seating rocks, heat lamps for cold nights, they even offer you a blanket if you're cold, sweet! My only issue was, I have allergies and unfortunately my food was too spicy for me to eat, so my brother gladly ate it for me. They did try to accommodate after, however everyone was done eating and I didn't want to hold everyone up. Our entire table ordered different types of beef meals from burgers to the hanger frites. We made reservations at Pico for 3 pm on a Saturday and everything was phenomenal. Our server, Kerry (sp?), was fabulous and made the experience SO personal for us. She recommended items on the menu, explained the dishes to us, and make us feel like we were VIPs! The vodka and gin cocktails were DELICIOUS and definitely had a vintage-vibe to them. We had the olives which were in this olive oil that was so good, I sopped it all up with the bread provided. Then, we moved onto the beef tartar, which was my husband's favorite. After than, we had the steak frites - the steak was perfect and the horseradish sauce was perfect! We also had the beet salad...and lemme tell you, I'm still thinking about it! It was beets on a smoked cheese base with pistachios. (see pic) Just WOW. For dessert, we had the blueberry "hand pie" with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. What a gem!!! Went to Pico last night, and the one thing i took away from it was WOW. Pico closed for a little bit while they got a new chef, and had only been open 3 days as of last night. Let me tell you, Chef John Wayne is talented. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. The short rib ragu was amazing - the pasta was cooked perfectly. The uni on crispy rice was delectable. The house made charcuterie was the best charcuterie I've ever had. When I see panna cota on a menu, I order it, and this was the most special one I've ever had. The orange cocoa butter sprayed on top was the coolest thing I've ever seen on a panna cota. Not only was the food great, but so was the environment. The restaurant is beautiful and feels like you're cosy at home, but in an upscale way. The manager, Liz, was as kind and as bubbly as could be. She even remembered the name of everyone at our table - I've never had that before. In summary, this restaurant, the chef, the people, are special and you need to try it. read more

This was the only restaurant operating on a Wednesday in Los Alamos. Since the town looked almost like a ghost town we were happy to find this well appointed place. The back patio was quite attractive although it could use something to dispel the squadron of flies buzzing around. We had the mussels and steak tartare, both were quite good. Service was attentive. The house white wine was of good quality. The dessert menu was not attractive to me so I had the vanilla ice cream ( I could have any flavor as long as it was vanilla). It was likely homemade since there were some ice particles in it but the flavor was robust. It was also quite pricey- 2 walnut-size scoops cost $8 ! read more

Beautiful restaurant and garden dining. Our appetizer, olives with bread, was very good. Service was overwhelmed due to a wedding party. The polenta was delicious, although small-sized and expensive. The chicken wasn't good. Difficult to cut and tough to eat. We sent it back and ordered desserts, which were okay. We had a lemon-curd-on-shortbread tart and strawberries and whipped cream on miniature biscuits. One of us wasn't offered more wine after the first glass. Wow! What a memorable meal--everything from the ambience to the impeccable service to the great Lumen wines to the amazing food--was spot on! Pico has a new chef who learned from Thomas Keller, among other noted chef, and he is really something. Chef Cameron Ingle is bringing an A-game to the restaurant. My wine tasting group asked for a dinner for 29 people and Pico knocked it out of the park. We had the succulent mussels as the first course with local-farm grown salad, and blue corn bread made from local corn ground in--house, paired with both the lovely Lumen chardonnay and Lumen pinot. The entree was the melt-in-your-mouth boneless short rib with a crunchy gremolata topping and delicious sauce, served with the best patatas bravas any of had ever had, paired with the Julia's vineyard pinot and grenache. Dessert was persimmons picked that day from Pico's trees and served with house-made creme fraiche, paired with the Lumen pinot gris. It sound simple but it was the perfect finale to an extraordinary meal. Everyone raved about the food, wine and the wonderful setting. Proprietors Will and Kali have found a gem in the chef. We started with their bada bing whiskey cocktail, which was light refreshing and well crafted. Soo good I had two. Next up was a very tasty and tender green salad. For mains we had their burger served with waffle fries & the steak frites. The burger was OK ( patty was small ) and the waffle fries were a little undercooked & not hot enough. The steak frite is where they lost me.,while it was a fairly tender Bavette cut but the sauce they served with it was extremely spicy and overpowering and inappropriate in my opinion for the flavor profile. Also, seriously, you serve prefab waffle cut fries with this steak instead of crispy, thin garlicky Frites? Sorry that's just the lazy man version!
