I recently went here and I have to say that it was alright. I did enjoy the pizza although the texture of cheese not so much. The dough is the kind where you need a drink with it! My boyfriend who is not a vegan enjoyed the cheese bread the most and had no complaints about the pizza! I'm not too sure what the inside of the restaurant looked like or how good the service was, although my boyfriend went into the place and I heard no complaints from him. This is one of the best gluten free dairy free pizzas I've ever had! I didn't know there was such a thing of GF thick crust, and when I finally found a spot with GF thick crust and DF cheese, I was over the moon to try it. The pizza went beyond my expectations. The crust was soft and tasty. The cheese was plentiful and actually melted. The toppings were also plentiful. The staff were also really helpful. Both times I've dined in was for a collaboration pizza between Pie Sci and Khana, the "Butter Chicken" pizza. It's truly a masterpiece. We got there early on a Monday evening and snagged a table, and watch them get progressively busier the whole night. There's never not a pizza in the oven. You order at the counter, grab your seat, and one of the workers calls your name at the counter in a sing-songy fashion that prompts you to want to respond in the same way. Unfortunately the slices were hard as a rock and as you can tell by the photo it might have been sitting in the warmer for hours. The salad I had no hope for once I opened the container. this is one of those new trendy, hippy-dip restaurants that has randomly popped up in detroit, but has no clue where they actually are and what the culture entails. i came in here last week to pick up a multi-item order, approached the counter with smiles and all to let them know i was picking up. the order wasn't ready, which wasn't a problem at all so i went to go turn my car off and came back in and waited about 15 minutes before i had said order in my hand. in those 15 minutes, i witnessed what i presume to be a regular (a white-older man with a ponytail, wearing sunglasses) come in and the staff making a pretty lengthy conversation with him; shortly after, the supposed regular leaves with an order in hand. post conversation, all the staff weirdly disappear and come back after a few beats. i see one person, who i initially checked in with alongside friend with the piercings and cute, shot hair, eating at pizza at his heart's content away near the over, so at this point my patience is beginning to wean. after having a ten minute timer i had previously set go off, i approach the counter and ask the supposed manager if the order is ready. he goes to check and sure enough the order is ready, so finally delivers it to me. during the handoff, i mention to him that i had already checked in and asked for the order so i was shocked to have had waited an extended period of time, even though the order clearly had been ready during the time i was waiting. no decent apology, no fond farewell, no invitation to come back. now, i'm a brown skinned, Black & Brown, visibly queer, 5'5', incredibly stylish individual, and i have a warming personality to add to the charm; nothing about me is threatening nor alarming, so i'm not sure what about my presence comes off as unusual or warrants me to receive strange and inhospitable interactions. i'm a native who's been gone in california for almost a decade, and astonished isn't even powerful enough to describe how i feel about the gentrification of detroit. if you businesses want to come to detroit, but cannot learn how to be around folks who do not belong to your culture, whether that be on an ethnic, religious, etc level, please just stay out of the city. as guests, you have a duty to show empathy and humanity and understanding to those who do not look like you and do not act like you. the word "hospitality" gets thrown around way too often, and as someone who's career has been service-oriented regardless of the environment for 15 years, i'm appalled at the lack of "hospitality" i receive in so many of these white-operated businesses in detroit. hospitality is not white/western-euro oriented, and i need many of y'all who are coming from oakland, macomb, or whatever non wayne-county surburb to CEMENT that. i should not be coming back to my city feeling like an alien, and unfortunately pie sci pizza has added to that experience. as great as their food is, i can get great food anywhere, but i can't get humanity as easily. let's improve, please. PS, the business manager swiftly dropped in to give a baseless, emotional defense. my experience is my experience and unfortunately you don't get to try to manipulate that, especially as you were not present while I was there and unsurprisingly you not dictate the morals and culture of your team. But it's most probably because they were busy and super slammed, which I understand. The menu overall is very different, and even vegan friendly! We got the Jimmy Pesto pizza and I'll be honest, it wasn't my favorite. The breading was a bit much for the amount of sauce, cheese, and toppings there were on it, but nonetheless, it was still good. Here's where I'm at. This was our first stop as soon as we got to Detroit. We didn't even go to the hotel. We came straight here. There is street parking only, which wasn't hard to find with side streets right there. I loved the vibe inside. It's like a mad scientist's lab for pizza. The two guys in there were very helpful and friendly as we picked their brain for a little bit. The only thing that threw me off was the "Margherita Pizza". No sauce at all on it. My son got the meat lovers, which was excellent. Came with Peperoni, bacon, sausage and ham. The crust is buttery and perfectly cooked. Now keep in mind... A small is 4 slices, so the equivalent to a personal pie. More then enough for one person. Lastly, we got the special, which was the Jukebox Gyro. This blew us away. For the pizza AND the service* I drove through Detroit on my way to Niagara Falls, Canada to visit some loves and I figured I'd pick up some authentic Detroit style pizza for all of us to have for dinner when I arrived. I'd only had Via 313 in Austin, TX and ever since then I've been waiting for the opportunity to try the real deal. While driving I googled "best Detroit style pizza in Detroit" and Pie Sci was the first to pop up and it has great reviews. I called them up, explained that I would like to bring the best of Detroit to Niagara Falls and ordered 2 of the pizzas that they recommended. The person who helped me was so friendly and genuinely wanted me to get the best pizzas for the occasion. He offered to half-bake them so that I can throw them in the oven when I get there for the freshest taste. I ordered the Jimmy Pesto and the Fungus Amongus. My personal favorite was the Fungus Amongus with that truffle oil drizzle and locally harvested mushrooms. I took one bite and fell in love. The Jimmy Pesto was spectacular as well. They handled the 3.5 hour drive perfectly and heated up great in the oven, everyone loved them. We enjoyed them outside with a bottle of wine, made for an absolutely delightful first night seeing my loves. I LOVE PIE SCI!! I've had carry out from their Oak Park location and this is my first time grabbing some pies from their Detroit location. A huge variety of creative pizzas with a generous amount of toppings. We ended up getting a large round margherita and a large square "So Fresco So Clean" which was soooo delicious with the roasted corn, queso fresco, and garlic oil. Pickup was super fast, ready within probably 20 minutes around peak dinner time. I didn't get the chance to go inside but there was plenty of street parking and it looked cute from the outside! My first time in Detroit, which meant some Detroit style pizza was in order. I did a little research in advance and landed on Pie Sci for a trip with my family. The staff was helpful as I ordered but nothing about the customer service stood out on an evening where they weren't super busy, as they don't even bring the food to your table (knowing that we were dealing with a toddler). The star of the varieties we ordered (square cut, BYO with mushroom and pepperoni and a Hawaii 5-0) was absolutely the crust. Light and airy on the inside, crisp around the outside but not overbaked as you should expect. The red sauce in particular did not bring much to the party, as it was sparsely applied and had no lingering flavor. We would absolutely want to come back to try more of their specialty pies. Their house special salad was good, as this week it was a mix of chicken, purple onion, feta and strawberries with a balsamic vinaigrette. I will say that we also tried two different kinds of the IceBox Brand ice cream bars and we just didn't enjoy more than a bite or two, which was a bummer considering how much they cost. I am an old time Pie Sci'er. The last year or so, not so much. I was told that there is new ownership, which would make sense but it still isn't enough to bring me back. Not sure what the change is but I suspect there has been a down grade of ingredients. The cheese tastes like its lower quality, the crust no longer has that crisp to it - it's more spongy, and there is an after taste that that coats your mouth, like seed oily. When you walk in, you notice a lot of cute sciency details, like the flasks, graduated cylinders, and beakers lining the walls. We ordered a small (4 pieces) square of the Fig Lebowski. I know fig sounds like a strange ingredient to put on a pizza BUT TRUST ME, it's soooo good!!! The sweetness goes great with the savory of the bacon and cheese and everything else. This place makes the crust so perfectly crispy yet soft and airy. Also ordered a caprese salad and the ingredients were so fresh; I loved the giant clumps of mozzarella and the dressing was so freshly basily! I took some of the dressing home.
