I want so badly to love Pie Slayer, but every time I feel like I overpaid for an average slice of pie. I do feel like they use quality ingredients and make everything by hand, but I've never had a pie that impressed me. In my last few visits I've gotten the caramel oatmeal cream pie, which I really like. It's chewy and not too sweet. A friend of mine loves their 'pop tart' style pastries, but I haven't tried one yet. Do NOT order coffee. We stopped in after dinner on a Saturday night and my husband ordered a coffee. It took several minutes, as a French press does, but I don't know what to call the drink he received. It was weak and there were grounds all in it. If I could make a suggestion, I would just switch to drip coffee. The pink French presses are cute but not worth the time. I'll keep trying it because I love dessert and I really want to find something that changes my mind! read more

After the drone show during Riverfest a group of us wanted some dessert so we decided to go try Pie Slayer. We were very excited about a later night dessert place and ordered a big variety of items to try. Everything was...average at best which was disappointing. I tried the banana pie one with a chocolate brownie bottom. It sounded absolutely incredible, but was not nearly as amazing in reality. The banana part was good, the crust part was so thick and tough that you couldn't get through it. Another friend tried the peanut butter rice krispy thing which ended up being mostly stale. Another friend tried a cookie which was fine, but nothing was honestly worth the cost we paid for it. Unless I hear otherwise from other foodies that things are better, I won't be returning. read more

I got the chocolate butterfinger pie and a carrot cake pop tart. The pop tart was cream cheese filled with a carrot jam and it was so good! The butterfinger pie had a crispy crust and tasted exactly like a butterfinger. I ate that one too fast for a picture. The woman running the register was very friendly and really seemed interested in having a genuine conversation which was nice and refreshing. Will go back again! read more

One of the best new spots in town! There are not very many, if any, places that specialize in pie which makes them pretty unique. They have a rotating list of pies that you can buy by the slice and all of them are excellent. They also have some hand pies as well if you aren't in the mood for a slice. They have a great location downtown just a short walk from the boardwalk. There are a few tables if you are interested in sitting down and eating, but if you have a large group, it would be best to get it to go and eat at home. The staff was SUPER nice! The peanut butter butterfinger pie had NO taste though, I don't know how it's still on the menu or else the one I had was part of a bad batch. Not sure what part had peanut butter but it was a super light flavor that I could barely pick up on. The crust was overly hard and not enjoyable to eat. I say bad batch on this one because I do feel that it needed more sugar as well. The stranger banana was a slightly different story, the meringue/fillings were absolutely on point. The crust was awful, has a very lardy oil taste that also bent my plastic utensil provided by the establishment out of wack. Would I give it another try.. possibly. But I'll have to wait and read some reviews of new products to determine how many have actually tried them and liked them vs how many are just excited about something new. read more

Had the pleasure of trying pie slayer at hidden grounds coffee. They had different pastries but I decided to go with the fruit pie danish with cherries. It was delicious. Warmed it up when I got home. I love the simple ingredients. The pastry was buttery and soft. I loved the egg custard like filling and the fresh cherries. What a great spot!! We walked to the Pie Slayer after the Chris Botti concert at the Wilson Center and were treated to some of the best late evening pastries. The coffee is excellent, and it is also available served French press style. Slayer offers wine for those looking for the night cap with dessert. The variety of pies and pastries is numerous. I had the Peanut Butter Butternut pie, and it was excellent. The flavor was deep with peanut butter and the sprinkle of crushed butternut candy was subtle enough to carry the experience. The Slayer has dining in and sidewalk sitting. The room is wonderful, cool, hip and details in decorating were noticeable and appreciated. We loved talking to the friendly staff and they were more than helpful in guiding us for our choices. Everything is made fresh; no cookie cutter look to these pies. Taste and creativity are in the forefront. We decided before we left to buy a few of the Apple Fried Pies for breakfast.
