We are very thankful for Karen and Piedmont Pet! We have entrusted our animals to Karen for several years and have only ever had great experiences. Piedmont Pet is an excellent in-home boarding and daycare provider for small dogs. Nervous pet owners like me will appreciate the genuine care, attention to detail, and communication Karen brings to every pet care interaction. Our little 17-lb terrier mix has a few health issues and is on a special diet and meds, and needs to be in an environment where he will be handled gently. We never, ever worry with Karen! She was extremely thorough when we first started working with her, making time to ask lots of good questions and answer all of ours. She is a confident and very experienced animal lover who organizes and handles small-dog pack walks like the pro she is. We get daily photos of his adventures when our dog is with Piedmont Pet which we really, really appreciate. Karen takes care of him like one of her own (little sweaters in the winter, no-pull harnesses, comfy beds and blankets, etc.), and we can tell he feels secure and comfortable with her and his "vacation pack". His time there is a great mix of snuggles and downtime and walks and enrichment time. Karen also provides drop-in visits for our cat when we're away which we really appreciate. Our cat doesn't like anyone and she actually plays with Karen and allows pets (we get pics and videos of this too)! We feel secure knowing our sweet little dog buddy is in great hands and our less-sweet but still loved cat buddy is getting wet food and playtime when we can't be there. Karen at Piedmont Pet is the best! My dog is always so happy to spend time with Karen and her pups. She gets to hang out with her buddies all day and enjoy a nice walk in the hills or by the Bay. The dogs in Karen's care get lots of love and cuddles but they also listen to her. She has just the right touch and is quite knowledgeable about the care, socialization and language of dogs. Karen and Matt are so great. Matt takes my dog Frisca out a couple times a week for "pack walks" and she is loving it, getting all tired and calm and stuff. I used to use their services when I went out of town, back when we were all really in Piedmont (upper Oakland) Then they moved to Alameda and I moved downtown. Then I moved to Alameda and now, even though they are back in Oakland they have a lot of Alameda clients. Last month I went on two trips and they boarded my dog Frisca and brought here back over for cat visits (my kitty LOVES his doggy). Matt took pictures and texted them to me. There was a pack walking injury (right back outer claw got ripped off) and Karen took Frisca in to the vet and got it all squared away with very little drama. Tbh, my little dog is great with big dogs, but it's nice to see her with other little dogs. I have been taking my Niño to Piedmont Pet for a couple of years now for boarding. He really loves it! Its a doggy vacation for him too. Karen is very professional and caring. She also takes him on hikes while he is there. They also offer daycare just for the day. Karen asks though questions before taking in your pet, to make sure they will be properly taken care of. Do they take medicines, or have any medical problems, or if they eat certain things? This makes me feel at ease, knowing she cares for each pet as an individual. Piedmont Pet is the BEST daycare I could imagine for my dog. My boyfriend and I were just listing today all the reasons Karen and Matt are amazing, and this is after being clients for several months already. The honeymoon doesn't wear off. Top 10 Reasons why Piedmont Pet rocks: 1. A FULL DAY OF DAYCARE. With other services, including pickup/dropoff time, our dog was getting maybe six or seven hours out of the house total. We both work 10+ hour days, so it makes a big difference that our dog is with Karen, Matt, and the pack that whole time. 2. THE DOG PACK. We always thought our dog was a little antisocial, but then we started seeing these awesome pics of him romping and playing with the Piedmont Pet pack. Not sure how they do it, but somehow Karen and Matt set a tone for the group so everyone gets along. 3. IN-HOME, SMALL GROUP DAYCARE. Who wants to send their fur baby to a warehouse with dozens of other dogs barking and peeing indoors all day long? It's so cool to get an email while I'm at work and see him in flying midair playing with other dogs or looking pensively over a lush, green valley. I travel for work and needed to find a reliable place to take my dog, Ollie. As a doggie mom, it is always hard to leave my little guy in the care of others, however, Karen and Matt treat him as one of their own. Ollie comes home from his "retreats" well loved and in need of his own vacation. Karen and Matt care for smaller dogs (under 40 lbs) in their home where the dogs are not crated and are taken on daily hikes. Matt sends pictures every day (one is attached) which always make me smile. My husband even joked that he wished our dog looked like he missed us even a little, but he is always happy. Ollie, while happy to see us when we pick him up - is equally happy to come to their house. I feel so much better knowing I have a place to take him where he will be cared for just as if were with me. I was traveling out of the country for the holidays and was looking for a boarding home for my 3 year old Tibetan Terrier. The moment we met Karen we felt at ease with her, and her home was really calm. We knew right away that this was the place for Molly (we had visited a few other homes and all of them were fairly loud with dogs barking constantly). Like any doggy mom I was worried about leaving her for the first time. On the second day Karen posted pictures on her site, and I could see that Molly was having an amazing time out on the trail hikes! Karen posted pictures almost every day, and I really appreciated this. From that moment I was no longer worried, only worried that Molly might not want to come back home with us :) When we picked-up Molly she looked so happy, and in fact, while we were there she went and sat in a dog bed and was not ready to leave! Karen, Matt, and Frank are all amazing. We have been using their dog hikes, cat sitting, and dog boarding services for the past year and are so happy with their professionalism and love of animals. Matt usually takes Lucy (our shepherd) on her hikes, and we are always updated with photos of the group. Lucy is so excited to see them at our house. When she is on her hike, she is often gone for 2-4 hours depending on where they go, which means a very tuckered out dog at the end of the day. We have also used their boarding services and kitty care services when we travel, which has been amazing. They do have cats, so dogs need to be OK with kitties to board with them. Lucy gets to hang out in their home with the other pets and isn't in a kennel while we are out of town. They also will stop by and check in on our cats and hang out with them for a little bit, often sending us pictures while we are away. Matt and Karen are SO reliable. One year and no mix ups. They are responsive, professional, and take great pride in their work. I recommend them to everyone with a dog. read more

My pooch is a cranky old man. Too old and too antisocial to go on lovely trail hikes with a gang but he gets a neighborhood walk and plenty of treats and loving because of Karen and Matt. He even gets a little socialization when Karen brings her dog Max along; two oldsters shuffling down the street together in canine camaraderie. Karen always checks his water bowl and asks about his health and they've been very accomodating when I travel and walk schedules/locations change. We only use her 1 - 3 x a week.. but BOY does my pup appreciate it! When I get home, my pup is just happy as a clam. I get a detailed report on each walk. Karen is licensed and insured. My husband and I are so glad we found Piedmont Pet. We have a 4 year old yellow lab who has a lot of energy and we hate leaving her alone all day when we are at work. I was just looking for a dogwalker - but we found so much more. Piedmont Pet picks up your dog and takes them for an adventure - the dogs get to go on hikes, off leash, with other dog friends. You get pictures texted to you and emailed as well of your dog on the hikes, so you can see just how much fun your dog is having. Plus they always leave you a note and let you know where they went that day. The best part is that Karen and Matt LOVE dogs - my pup goes nuts when they get here. She is so excited to go for her hikes and to see her friends. Here are the reasons why they get 5 stars: (1) Super responsible - they have NEVER missed a day, I know I can count on them being there, even on the rainiest of days. I trust both Karen and Matt completely with my dog - I know they take care of her like she was their own. (2) Super friendly - they LOVE dogs, have several of their own and help with rescue animals, so your pup will get a lot of love (3) Super accommodating - I have emailed the day before letting them know that we have a vet appt in the afternoon and they make sure my pup is back in time (4) Super walks - They hike for at least an hour, most of the time it is longer so your pup will be good and tired from all the walking and playing with the other dogs. (5) Super reasonable - considering the amount of time and exercise your dog gets, it is much more affordable than other dog walking services. When we lived in Los Gatos we paid someone $16 to take our dog on a 30 minute neighborhood walk. For $25, she gets to have a day with dog friends and a really long hike in the outdoors, off leash. Karen and Matthew have been wonderful care givers for our dog Dino. My husband and I recently downsized from our family home in Oakland to an apartment and our 11 year old family dog had a hard time adjusting to life alone in an apartment all day. These folks are wonderful -- as helpful and flexible as can be, and they love your dogs. LOVE them. They feed them the best food for overnights, take them on great walks (send you photos, even), and go out of their way to take the best possible care of them. My little dog came to us through a shelter from the streets, and had all kinds of issues; she was fearful of other dogs and most people. I "had to" leave her with Karen and Matt for a week about 2 months after I got her, because of work. She came back totally socialized with other dogs (loves to play now), and much happier in our house. I couldn't have found a better place for her to be, and when she came home I got rid of the dog trainer that wasn't helping me much anyway. For over ten years, Karen, Matt, and staff at Piedmont Pet have been caring for our dogs. Some were not easy to care for as they were older and infirm. Karen had to give insulin shots to one of our Dachshunds whenever she house sat over night. Some of the over nights lasted close to two weeks at a stretch while we were away out of country. Karen and company did a beautiful job of caring for our two doxies. But now we have Boots, who absolutely adores Karen because she takes her and a pack of others on long, leash-less walks to wild and wonderful places. While we are away on extended vacations, some out of country, Karen and staff walk Boots each day and stay over night with her at our place. I know Boots enjoys those visits as she's always a happy, but exhausted girl when we get back. She gets a lot of exercise with Karen around. Karen always has our pet's well being in mind; she frequently asks for Boots' jacket when its cold out, or she'll remind us to ensure Boots has had tick and flea meds. Their prices and fees are competitive. Karen, Matt, and the Piedmont Pet staff are highly recommended. read more
