I have walked by this park many times but had never seen it. This is because you need to look up to find it. It is 20 feet or more above the esplanade situated at the corner where the walk turns away from the Hudson towards Brookfield mall. .You can access the dog run from setback steps off the river walk or once you turn away from the river, there is a ramp. At the entrance to the dog run there are two gates.The second gate is a bit rusty and difficult to slide. Sirius run is for any size dog . Big and little dogs are all together. Since my dog Mickie is small, I was a bit concerned. All was fine and Mickie relaxed. The owners kept an eye on their dogs. The Park has a nice view of the Hudson and its arrangement next to a kids playground is nice.

This dog run is named after PAPD K-9 Sirius #17. He was a bomb sniffing yellow lab who served in the World Trade Center. He died during the 9/11 attacks when Tower Two collapsed. His body was recovered and he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. There used to be a plaque that explained all this, but I'm not sure where it went. It's not the largest dog run I've been to, but it's a decent size for most dogs. There's no partition so small and large dogs play together. It's paved, which I prefer to using gravel for the ground. There are two hills and one crater that fills up with water and becomes a pool. It automatically drains itself as well. There's a two-level water fountain off to the side. One level for dogs and one for people. I have often seen someone spray the pavement down with a hose at night, so I know this dog run is definitely cared for. There are nice benches all along one side. Overall it's a very nice-looking dog park. The park itself is elevated a bit so you can look out on to the plaza and the North Cove Marina. There's nothing like spending an hour or so enjoying the afternoon with your dog overlooking the water and people watching. I think what really makes this an enjoyable experience though, is the people. The other dog owners are courteous and friendly. There's a sense of community among the regulars. If you live downtown, this is the place to bring your dog!

It just seems to be the rule of thumb here that only "bad dogs" go in there, where typically smaller runs are for smaller dogs who may be more delicate or intimidated by larger dogs. Anyhow, the large open space is what Cleo loves so that is what she gets! There are little hills, rock formations and areas to dig, run a kind of circuit and benches / tables for the humans to seek refuge from the pups that rule this land. Two things that can be improved here are: 1) Have a water fountain, although I always am sure to bring a large bottle this would greatly help if anyone was under-prepared so no pooches get dehydrated 2) More lights for use during the evening. There are several uncovered areas here that the lights do not reach which makes it difficult to monitor your baby On that note, cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!

The terrain is all over the place and it truly feels like you're in a sliver of the Catskills. I love it and so does my little pupper. He's medium sized friendly barker of a dog and does laps around this place. They're also in the process of expanding it currently. So lots of construction. They've rebuilt the entrance fence to it and so it feels very safe. There's a real sense of community if you come often enough. Love this place!

NYC Parks department never added it to their website on their list of dog friendly areas, even though they were involved in helping to get this run set up. This dog run is the 5th one that is part of Riverside Park and seems to have a community group to help maintain the run. It's on the smaller end of medium-sized dog runs compared to others I've been to around the city. Plenty of room for dogs to run and play though. There is only one run for all dogs. No separate run for smaller dogs. There's one entrance. Even though it's only 3 years old, the latches just barely reach the poles to keep them closed. And there's a gap in one of the gates that was remedied by attaching a wood plank. I noticed some clear plastic poop bags stocked by the entrance, which is nice. Currently, it's filled with dark dirt instead of lighter sand/dirt & gravel that other runs have (ex. 72nd St dog run, Madison Square Park, etc.) There was a little bit of wood chips that are pushed along the edges of the run. So there's a lot of dust that kicks up. It was a clear blue sunny crisp day on my visit, but dust got into my throat & eyes in the 20 or so minutes I was there. My dog definitely needed a bath afterwards. For some reason, all of the dog runs that I've been to in Harlem have dark dirt and wood chips. Not sure why that's the choice of medium. Every dog run has nice people, and ones that don't address their dog's behavior. Unfortunately, there was the latter on my visit. I like dogs of all sizes and breeds. It's usually the people that are the issue. I've been to plenty of runs with large & small dogs in the same run. As soon as I walked in this run with my dog, a bunch of dogs came up to smell mine, as usual. But one particular dog was hyper, high energy and zeroed in on my dog. My dog gave multiple warnings to let the husky know he's not down with playing or interested. But this husky wouldn't stop and I didn't see the owner anywhere. I tried to put some space between my dog and the husky but the husky was obsessing at getting to my dog. We hadn't even gone in a few feet. So I tried to pick up my dog to prevent an escalation and go further in to the other side of the run, but the husky starts jumping up on me trying to get at my dog. No dog of any size should jump up on people. Again, no owner anywhere addressing the husky's behavior. I asked who the dog belonged to, and some girls near by just pet the husky and called it beautiful. No one owned up to owning the husky. I decided to leave since no one was addressing the husky. I couldn't even take a step to the gate without the husky jumping on my dog and I asked again who owned the dog. Finally a white, bearded, grungy/hipster guy came up and I asked him to at least hold his dog so I can get out. He did a poor job of getting control of his dog. Note, he dog run rules at the entrance says "Interrupt rough play and mounting," which is pretty standard. I stood outside the run for about 5 minutes using my phone. In that time, 2 other growling escalations broke out between the husky and different dogs. The husky's owner just put himself between the dogs and just cooed at and pet the other dogs involved rather than giving his dog a break or teaching it boundaries. Also probably not a good idea to give other dogs positive affection when they are riled up. Too bad Yelp doesn't allow video. The guy finally left with his dog, and I went back in. Didn't have any issues with other dogs that were in the run after that. Another owner said it's not normally like this. But I'm skeptical. And with all the dustiness, not sure if I will go back regularly.

This is a fantastic location! Aside from it being two blocks from me (so close Cleo goes almost every day, sometimes twice a day! [Which also means bathing her twice a day!]) the immediate area was lacking a dog run since they shut down the one on Riverside x 151 for the pedestrian bridge construction build into Riverbank Park. It is lacking in benches, which may be temporary but even so it doesn't seem like many people mind. Everyone here is very friendly and so are the pooches! Haven't had any issues yet, and Cleo is a crazy one!
