Great variety but expensive. We got about 15 plants for about $300. Planted in adaptable areas as instructed with Miracle-Gro soil and watered daily. That was Mothers Day. Today (before Fathers Day), only 5 are thriving. 7 have completely died and the other 3 are in a struggle-bus stage. Day before we bought a bunch from a box store and only one of those have died. At Pikes, we bought two identical tomato plants. Planted them side by side, both cared for identically in the same soil. One is popping out tomatoes and buds like there is no tomorrow and the other one, though green and growing, will not bud at all. Not giving up on it yet though. Really frustrated. If I want to lose money, I will take a chance with losing less $ at a box store. Thought the higher cost would bring better quality plant but that was not my experience. Use them to repot three plants and bought new pots with them as well was very happy with the service. A few days later, I noticed a lot of gnats in my home. I bought some sticky traps and placed them in the plant. They've been infested with gnats. I called them and they said that I needed to purchase something to alleviate the issue. Excuse me Pike Nurseries how have you been hiding a location from me? After watching a local YouTuber make a video about their trip there I had to make a visit. This location is tucked behind the Sycamore Commons shopping center in Matthews. It's a good size nursery. They don't have a large variety of succulents and an okay amount of house plants. I don't find much on my visit (that's because I have a large collection already). I did see a couple items I didn't have but nothing I was in need of or searching for. The plants look good and are well taken care of. The employees were even making sure the other items on the shelves were well arranged and displayed nicely. I'm glad to know of this location and will definitely make it a part of my places to pop into and see what's new!! I also have to visit all the other locations around the Charlotte area. I returned a rosebush that was not blooming to the MATTHEWS location. I had a receipt and all the tags. I asked for a refund. They would not give me a refund only a store credit. I told him how unhappy I was to not get a refund, after being in the customer service business, my whole life. I know how important it is to build a relationship with a customer. The manager, Cory became hostile and got in my face like he wanted to fight me. I couldn't believe it. I reminded him how important it is to build a relationship with a customer, and told him I would never come back there again. I advise everyone to go to big box nursery and spend your money. I am officially done with Pike's and it makes me very sad because I love their stores. This is now the THIRD time I have brought mealybug infested plants into my home (story on original review- all big hanging baskets which I ended up throwing out). I decided to give Pike's a break for a bit and returned again for the first time months and picked up multiple plants including a grapevine hanging basket. Well... sure as s**t I was just checking on my plant (she's been in quarantine!) and she is COVERED in mealy bugs. This plant is entirely too dense to get them all and I will be pitching it. Looks like I need to pick through the other five plants and see if they, too, are infested. What a waste of money. read more

I think they know that that's why there's a free water bottle frig as u exit the greenhouse into the AC store. Perlite here is $2 more than the Johnston Rd location. We bought a beautiful Christmas tree at Pikes Dec 2. I think we spent $140 on the tree. Not chump change. We asked the nursery asst who was taking the tree to have it wrapped if we could get the stump cut a bit (the last tree we purchased from them stopped accepting water after a week...should've realized then...). She said they did not cut the stump and the tree would be fine. The tree was not fine. It died on us - fried, really - within a week and a half of having it. It had a full stand of fresh water with miracle gro Christmas tree additive! We will never, ever buy another Christmas tree from Pike's. Wasted money, and a completely dead and dried up tree the week before Christmas. We'd have done better with $40 and Home Depot. read more

I've been gardening for 20 years. I plant all new every other season. This fall I decided to go to pike instead of Lowes to buy my plants. I bought 23 cyclamen and 18 ornamental cabbages. The very first frost, every cyclamen died. They are supposed to live up to 20 degrees. It was barely 32. They wouldn't take them back, exchange them, nothing. They sent me away wasting $170. Lowes and Home Depot take back anything, although I've never had to. Be warned. They do not care about their customers. The manager actually said, "gardening is a crap shoot". The nursery is very nice. It is very well organized and the staff knows quite a bit about the plans they have. Well they don't have a huge selection of everything they have enough. You can't go here and find 30 different types of trees but they have all the standard trees. My only issue with the nursery is that they are a little more expensive than a independent nursery. After all they are a chain so prices are pretty much set. There are better deals if you're willing to drive around town but it is a good place for a quick shop. read more

Pretty to look at and great -- visually -- to walk around. They have loads of Proven Winner shrubs and flowers; lots of beautiful planters and garden features. ...But. This is not the place to buy anything -- ANY. THING. -- cheap. It's all boutique stuff at boutique prices. If you're looking for a Proven Winner flowering shrub for your garden, stop in here. They take great care of their plants. The store is always clean and well-appointed. But plan on going to Home Depot or WalMart to get your potting soil and pruning shears. They carry potting soil at Pikes but it's all organic, specialty blend, WholeFoodsy kinda stuff. And it's usually in a really small bag. The staff are SO friendly and helpful. And shopping here is a joy for the senses. But it's not the most practical place to shop. When I'm stocking my garden for the season, Pike's is a specialty trip for a specific plant or sculpture for my garden, not a place to buy tomato plants and planter pots in bulk. read more

Paid for a 7 foot Christmas tree; when employee was loading it into my truck, I was informed it was split on the bottom so 1 foot was cut off. When we got home and set it up, 1 out of 3 top branches remained. It is to the FAR LEFT making the tree hopelessly off center. Day 1 tree barely absorbed water. It will likely die in 10-12 days. I was somewhat skeptical about going to Pikes after reading other reviews on different sights. I would have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of assistance I receieved. I went on 3 different occasions looking for shrubs that I only had a picture of(that were already planted) and flowers that I really didn't know what I was looking for. I haven't planted shrubs in over 15 years so after 15 minutes of question I believe his name was Michael or Mitch..i can't remember, I was pretty confident. After three trips my yard is now complete. Mary Ann is awesome, not only did she lead my wife and I in the right direction with her knowledge we had fun when I had to come back to get one more shrubs when she clearly told me that I needed the extra one and to get it when I was there the first time lol. Very good people, if you don't see anyone to help you...just go to the front counter and the will get someone in maybe 2 minutes. We bought a Crepe Myrtle April 2018. We specifically wanted the dark fuchsia color and worked with a staff member to get the correct color. We planted the tree ourselves. The tree bloomed in June and it was a light pink not the dark fuchsia we were sold. I called and talked to Jonathan (assistant manager) he apologized and said we could dig it up (now 6 ft tall) and bring it for an exchange and a $25 store credit. We asked for them to come out and dig it up and replace it with the correct color we originally were told we were buying as it was their mistake. He refused. So, their mistake makes more work for us!!! Will never do business with this company again. I understand why they have bad reviews. read more

Excellent experience tonight getting a Christmas tree. The tree comes with a stand that actually works and you can return after the season for a store credit. I am less than amateur in gardening, trees and just about anything outdoors. My visit to Pike's Nurseries in Matthews showed me I didn't need to know anything because the sales staff knows everything!! However, I enlisted the service of the planting department and received far less customer service than I ever thought possible. The planting was scheduled for Mon, 8/21. I was supposed to receive a picture after the planting. On 8/23 I received a call from the operations manager, Brian, who informed me the job was never scheduled. Brian asked if I would be okay with having the trees planted on the 24th. I said sure. At this point I gave Pike's Nurseries in Matthews the benefit of the doubt. Things happen. I reviewed the notes that were entered for my special requests with Brian and all was in order. That was the last I was to hear from Brian. I never received the picture. I called Brian to verify the work was done, because of course, Pike's Nurseries had collected the full payment for the work. Brian did not answer. I left a voicemail. Yes, it was a weekend. I called the second day, and still no response or reply to my voicemail from Brian. I then called the store and spoke to Collin. The most responsible and customer service oriented person I encountered, was Collin. Collin called Brian, same weekend day, and Brian answered. Instead of providing the answer to my simple question, was the job completed; Brian instructed Collin to tell me he would speak to me first thing Monday morning. It would seem to me the least Brian could do is respond to my question since his staff's lack of duty caused the doubt in the first place. First thing Monday morning came and went and the only person I received a call from is Collin. Taking the responsibility that truly belongs at the feet of the Operations Manager, Brian. What a coward. Collin agreed to personally take pictures and send to me. I declined because that told me I no longer want to do business with an establishment that allows leadership to shirk responsibility for their actions and sends others to take the brunt. Honestly, of which there was none. I will never do business with Pike's Nurseries again, even though they are one block from my home and have the healthiest plants and trees I have seen. Mr. Corey Knight, somehow, Brian has been led to believe he is beyond reproach and can dismiss and ignore paying customers. In addition, Brian has been led to believe it is okay to hide behind his employees instead of taking the lead as his position and pay requires. read more
