Absolutely amazing, HUGE studio that blends old-school with new in the best possible way. I've taken three classes here but love the Silk Suspension the most. It's definitely different and the inversions are heavenly. It's challenging to mind and body and you will work up a sweat as it incorporates some TRX-style moves and has the opportunity for more advancement in your practice if you want. Fun fact: the studio is owned by twin sister who are former Rockettes and pretty famous in the Pilates community. That's pretty cool! read more

I was lucky enough to take Emily's intermediate reformer class Saturday morning. Being a dancer for 20+ years and having a lot of reformer experience, I have found it very difficult to find a strong studio and instructor that can work with me in a class setting while other clients might not be as advanced as myself. Emily was able to guide all levels of students in class while making it challenging for each and every one of us, including one client who was pregnant. The studio is beautiful, bright and spacious. Something we don't get in NY. I can't wait to come back and take more classes!! read more

I have been coming here for several years and I really enjoy it. The instructors are knowledgeable and attentive. The reformer classes are small (4-6 students). The equipment is clean and new. It's located on 42nd and 5th so it's very convenient. If you're looking for a challenge, try the Redcord classes. For a targeted exercise, go with the reformer classes. Enjoy! read more

I love this studio! Besides for it being right around the corner from work, they have a huge variety of classes. I tried the corealign- a bit on the beginner end it seemed, or my class was at least. I continue to take silk suspension and if you want to feel sore from your lats to your quads, Tina's Wednesday classes are tough. Its like TRX and pilates moves combines.... I love it- this may be one of my favs on classpass! Wish I could take this 2x a week, but alas I have to wait until next month to see her again. What a workout! A+- a MUST try. read more

Pilates on Fifth warms my heart! I have been coming here consistently for two months and I can't say enough nice things! The staff is friendly and there is a spacious locker room with clean bathrooms and a shower. The instructors are wonderful...the website notes that they have a passion for Pilates and compassion for their clients and that is absolutely true. I was planning to call out individual instructors in my review, but when I was thinking about it, I realized I wanted to shout out to all of them because they are AMAZING. The Reformer/Chair class is my absolute favorite, but Mat Pilates Plus, Barres and Belles, and Cardiolates are also spectacular. read more

Not sure why people seem to like this place. Entrance is impossible to find (looks like main entrance is under construction) and you have to go through a smelly and dark service entrance to get to a tiny elevator. Studio itself feels extremely crowded with gear since it's all one open space. Everything including locker rooms looks very old and with fluorescent lighting I really felt like I was in a lousy NY open space office. Also the locker room area didn't feel clean to me. Everything is open space so all classes are held right next to each other and you hear other instructors talk. The equipment is old. It works fine but in a city where there's a fitness studio every two blocks I felt like this really didn't measure up to the right standard of facilities. Finally, feel like front desk people could be nicer but this was really a minor issue. read more

The studio is nice and its clean - until I got up close to my machine. I was surprised by the hair and dust on and around the machine I was using during my first class. Maybe their cleaning person was out that week? When I went back for my second class I had a completely clean machine so the dusty machine was either overlooked on accident, or their cleaning person was out. Being a pilates instructor myself I understand that its hard to give everyone attention individually sometimes - but in a class of 5 where at least one person is doing something completely wrong at least change up your cues or choice of words to see if that helps them get what you are trying to say. If you keep saying "tilt your pelvis up" and someone isn't doing it then repeating the same thing several times or just plain ignoring the fact that they are not getting it isn't cool. Also, most of the time I watched the instructor she was looking down or straight ahead and not at anyone in the class? What are we paying you for then? Just to talk and hear your own voice and for us to guess what you mean? And not get any feedback or corrections? With that said, I made sure to try other instructors going further and not just the day/time that was most convenient for me. They have hangers in the locker room which is great. They also have showers and lots of mirror space. They do offer a lot of different classes and times, but I wish there were more classes before 8am on the weekdays. The second instructor (Shaila) I had was awesome, she knew her stuff, gave good cues, attention, corrections, and feedback! She also gave the effort to memorize everyone's names and speak to us by name during class. Flawless when giving compliments or corrections - your students know if you are talking to them or not. She gets 5 stars - I highly recommend her classes. read more

Classpass is great, but there's a low supply of (and high demand for) Reformer classes -- which means that I don't get my fix as regularly as I want. I was debating whether or not to buy a supplemental package at Moving Strength East (see my review here -- http://www.yelp.com/biz/movingstrength-new-york-2?hrid=yX-yTQ1luVOmWfeHhov7Ig), but coincidently my co-worker recommended Pilates on Fifth. Always game to try a new spot, I quickly purchased a Groupon deal for 6 equipment classes. Things I liked - It's super convenient for those who work in Midtown - There's a diverse set of classes that can fit anyone's schedule - The class sizes are quite small Things I didn't like - I can't take Intermediate Reformer classes thru the Groupon deal - The classes aren't as challenging as other studios' elsewhere - The instructor didn't pay as much attention to form as I expected The Groupon deal stipulation can't be held against them, per se, hence why I am giving Pilates on Fifth a three-star rating. I still have classes left in the package, so I'm hoping that Pilates on Fifth proves this rating wrong -- and ends up giving me a kick-ass workout. read more

Good Pilates studio with a variety of classes. I've been here for the CoreAlign and Reformer and Chair classes. I would recommend the Reformer classes over CoreAlign as I felt more of a "burn" and saw better results from the Reformer classes. The instructors I've had for Reformer (Stella and Ron) were very good and attentive to all students, correcting form in each exercise. The instructor-to-student ratio was very low with only 5 students to 1 instructor. Reformer & Chair classes are 50/50 on each machine and the exercises were pretty difficult! The only aspect of this class to be improved is the equipment as the Reformer "track" would squeak a little when using it. Well located studio for a before or after work class as it is on 5th and 42nd right by Grand Central. It's worth a try! read more

With three Groupons in hand (affording me an amazingly low rate on mat classes) I'm thoroughly enjoying Pilates on Fifth. Michelle is by far the best instructor. She runs a fluid, focused, challenging class and offers great corrections. I'm currently taking weekly mat and barre classes with her. I've tried two Cardiolates classes (individual trampolines; short ab series to start, cardio with small weights for the remainder). While I broke into a sweat and had some fun, I didn't find the classes as challenging and hence as stimulating as mat and barre with Michelle. All classes are small (11 max for mat; 5 max for machine), the equipment in good condition, the front desk friendly and accommodating, and the small locker room more than adequate for the low traffic. I particularly enjoy being able to stretch before and after class in the low-traffic, carpeted, skylit areas beyond the group class space. I haven't tried the reformer or gyrotechnic machines: I prefer to use my body weight to practice series that I can do at home. P.S. They now have electronic scheduling, including secure access to your class history and current class schedule -- super convenient and easy to use! To boot, every one of the three times that I've joined a waitlist, I've secured a spot more than a day in advance. read more

This place is nice. its clean. Its all good. It takes a while to get into the swing of pilates but once you do, its a pretty good work out. The first couple of times I felt like I was not doing anything or working out at all. But after a couple of lessons with the right instructor, I found this place to be totally worth it. And its CLEAN unlike some other pilates studios I've been to. The only down side is they don't play music so it is a little boring. read more

I thought this studio was just okay, when I was really hoping to love it. It's close to my new apartment which makes all the difference to me in terms of committing to classes. The front desk was extremely nice and helpful but the class itself didn't have much flow to it. My rating is based on my experience in here through ClassPass with a friend. We took the 1-hour Mats Pilate class. Phew. It was quite the workout and worth the evening class to go here. Our instructor asked if anyone was here for the first time (that was my friend and me) and he came up to ask us our names to welcome us. Barre classes here are a great workout. I have taken ones with Michelle & also with Haley. This is a socks only studio, so I recommend you get some gripper socks if you are used to bare feet pilates or yoga. (The yoga ones are expensive, but I found a 3pk of Reebok gripper socks for not slipping in your sneakers which worked just as well at Modell's on 42nd not far from the studio.) Front desk is very nice & helpful. They can loan you socks if you forget & can loan you a lock for the locker (they have a limited amount) in exchange for your i.d. You need to reserve for group classes in advance if they are popular (like the barre ones.) If the class you want to join is full when you call, ask to be put on the waiting list. They will call you 2 hrs. before the class if they have a cancellation. Would love to try their cardiolates class, but I can't get there in time from work (for a beginner class.) Having been to many studios in the city, my wish list for this place would be: 1) evening beginner cardiolates that starts at 6 or later for people who work downtown til 5 or 5:30 at a minimum:) 2) less cramped locker/changing area & 3) tile or wood floors in the locker room. read more

My first experience with Pilates on Fifth came when I bought a three-class pass on Groupon. I was so glad I did. Our first session made very a positive impression. We showed up for a Reformer Session and the first thing I noticed was the open and airy feel the studio had courtesy of all those sky lights. We showed up on a Sunday morning for Group Reformer Session with Susan, who is a peach. She managed to balance individual attention with group leadership. It was just enough to get the form right and nothing to distract us from getting in a good workout. I left feeling so stoked that I was planning our next Sunday Session before we hit the street. Everybody in the studio seemed to be laid back, just going about their business. And, compared to any gym I had previously been in, this place was not so focused on being noticed as it was subtly doing your workout in a very friendly environment. The locker room is simple enough. There's a bin for your shoes (the floor is 'socks only'), a shower, a loo and small lockers - just enough for a backpack. The desk staff is very sweet and accomodating. Since, my first few sessions, I've started working on my lingering marathon injury with the PT based out of there, Beth Frank, who is personally awesome and has healing hands. I've also been taking some solo and duet sessions with trainers Haley and Frances who have completely different and equally effective training styles. My experience at Pilates on Fifth can best be described as positively transformative. To date it is the chillest ass kicking I have ever endured. read more

I have now been a loyal customer for 2 years, and it's the longest commitment I've made to a fitness place. It's not because I am not willing to commit, it's because most places in NY have more than enough business that they don't feel they have to treat people like human beings. They may not have the newest and best facilities, but the equipments are well maintained, instructors are great, and all small classes so you get personal attention for an affordable price. The part that I love the most, they stopped selling vouchers because they care about their long term customers and don't want to over-crowd the classes. If you want to be treated with dignity and get a good experience out of your workout, this is the place to go. read more

I got several Groupons for their reformer and group classes and I can say I pretty much enjoy that. I come on weekends early in the mornings, so it's not crowded and the best part is the window in the ceiling! I love love love doing exercises while looking at the sky :) Equipment group classes are just like in several other studios I've been to. Good and you can't really expect too much attention from the instructor, it's a group class after all. Mat Pilates there is a kind of contemporary style with non-pilates moves and lots of props. It was not bad for a change, although I'm a big fan of a classical style. I've also tried Cardiopilates, where you have a kind of interval training mixing trampoline jumping and pilates moves. That was fun and I had a good workout. The changing room is small, but since I never met a crowd, I didn't have a problem with this. read more

Came here for Core class - we used the Pilates machines with resistance bands, which was actually an amazing workout. Owners are friendly and welcoming; instructors are tough but encouraging. Only suggestion is equipment (especially pads) are worn down and could use replacing. Also would recommend having locks for the lockers, even if there is a monetary charge. Would recommend for a good but affordable workout. read more

I am trying again to review this studio - let's hope this time it actually gets posted. I have been a client of Pilates on Fifth for a year and a half, and feel that it's far better than other studios in the city. They offer enough variety in classes without trying to be all things to all people. Group equipment classes are limited to 5 people, so you get individual attention. Keep in mind this is a Pilates studio, not a gym - there is only one shower in the ladies' changing room and not a lot of space to change during busy periods, but plenty of lockers to store your things. The best thing is the quality of the instructors. I've been to several studios in the city where the instructors just go through the motions and don't pay attention or give assistance or corrections to clients - which could lead to injuries but mainly just means you are wasting your time. Overall, these are the most experienced and attentive instructors I've found, particularly Michelle, Frances, Christen, and Kurt. My only request is more intermediate Reformer classes. read more

Space is great like the other reviews state however I was fortunate enough to not have any students schedule the morning Pilates Equipment class I attended I received 2 private classes out of my 5 class package, yeah!!! What I like: Studio is clean, Machines are stott :) What I did not like: 1. 1st timers were in an open class which brought the momentum to a screaching hult and we did a "stop" and "Go" type of equipment class, i.e. new students to pilates are supposed to attend an intro class here before an open. 2. class even at a private intermediate level was not challenging, however theraputic. 3. Clasees are titled Reformer and CHAIR Streamline, however not one group classs incorporated Chair... hmmm I would return however on a quest for a dynamic spx/proformer type studio. read more

I've been taking classes at Pilates on Fifth for over a year since I switched jobs and the studio is close to my new office. I had never consistently taken or found a Pilates class I really loved or could justify taking consistently before I found Kelly at Pilates on Fifth. I now religiously take class at Pilates on Fifth at least once a week (usually with Kelly but have branched our to other instructors and everyone is great) and the studio has become a highlight of my week. The instructors, staff and clientele are warm and welcoming which makes working out enjoyable. I never worked out before going to Pilates on Fifth. I had searched multiple pilates locations in NYC and found this location to have the best deal in all of NYC. Their space is on the top floor so natural light comes in. You can schedule and cancel on Mind Body app or call or email the front desk and they are very accommodating. I like this studio because I feel comfortable going there as someone new to exercise. People of various fitness levels go, but I don't feel like the studio has an intimidating feel to it. There are lockers where you can store your items during class as well. read more

I just had my first private session this morning. I bought an introductory 3-pack. My instructor Kurt was great! I'm pretty much an absolute beginner, both to pilates and to exercise in general, and he was very encouraging and very conscientious of all my particular body idiosyncrasies. I was ten minutes late and just assumed that my session would be ten minutes shorter, but he gave me a little extra time at the end. The studio is on the top floor of its building and is full of skylights. When you're on your back on the machines you're usually looking up through the skylights, and the locker room is full of natural sunlight, which is great for doing makeup. I actually really loved that there is no music. It's just bright and sunny and quiet and laid-back and people are there to exercise instead of check each other out to a soundtrack of club music. I booked my session online and it was very simple and convenient. There were plenty of openings for when I wanted, which was early before work. I am a little spoiled when it comes to locker rooms since the only gym I belonged to before was Equinox, but Pilates on Fifth was 100% clean, with plenty of lockers and plenty of hangers. read more

Ive been working with her for about 7 months, twice a week ( recovering from 2 discs removed and a spinal fusion ) . Kelly is inspiring, empathetic,and highly attentive. I go to pilates classes every now and then but Pilates on Fifth has made me a believer. I went to the Pilates Reformer & Chair class with Lenny and I was so impressed by his attention to form. His instruction and description of each move ensures that you get the most of each exercise. He mentioned each area we were working on (e.g., legs, core, shoulders, etc.) before we started the exercise. The class was challenging so I felt a strong feeling of accomplishment afterwards. Now I'm excited to check out another class. I'm definitely going back. The equipment is in great condition and the floor layout is easy to navigate. Remember to bring socks! read more

I'm surprised at the low rating for Pilates on Fifth-- I almost didn't leave a review because I assumed they were the industry standard. I've taken most of my classes with Christen S, who is amazing-- I've seen her tailor a 5-person class to 3 different difficulty levels, while correcting postures and encouraging each of us to work at our individual peaks. I'd recommend her for beginners. Tina L's class was great for a challenging workout-- LOL, the matter-of-fact way she cued us was pretty funny: "Wait, what? We're still supposed to be on high heels?" "Yeah, I didn't tell you to come down-- get up there!" Also, the space is great, in my opinion-- it's by no means a newly-renovated or boutique-style place, but I like the feel of it. I also still get butterflies when I see owners Kimberly or Katherine in the studio; they're total celebrities to me.. I mean, they literally invented Cardiolates! read more

I'm a regular at Pilates on Fifth, but by happenstance I took classes with a new instructor, Jennifer Monk, and found them so fantastic that I wanted to write a review. To be truthful, all the instructors here are fantastic and focus way more on form and technique than other places I've been to, which benefits your body the most in the long run. However, Jennifer surpassed even your high bar with her close attention to every single detail about my alignment. She gave me minute corrections to my elbows, my neck, my shoulders--and fixed things that I had been doing wrong for months without knowing it! I will definitely be booking with Jennifer again. Love this gem! Pilates on fifth is a Pilates lovers wonderland! There are so many kinds of different apparatuses- chairs cadillacs reformers barrels- something for everyone! I always take Katie's 7am class and it's amazing! 35 minutes reformer and then the rest is spent on the chair. You can modify the workout to be as hard or easy as you want it (thanks to the springs)- and today my abs are shaking! Katie always asks for requests on what to focus on, and the workouts are super creative- utilizing props like the box and implementing different exercises targeted at specific muscles // which ends in a total body workout. It's on the 22nd floor on fifth avenue and they have a wide variety of classes, always convenient with my schedule. Check it out! read more

So after 5 years of Shoulder surgeries and disc issues in the neck I went to Pilates on Fifth and met with Dr. Elisabeth Frank the Physiatrist on-site referred to me by a family member. Brief history on my injuries, after many failed surgeries that left me in some cases worse than when I started I was beginning to think life with total disability was my new reality. Enter Dr Frank. With in a couple of sessions she was able to pin point my issues work on them and put together and exercise routine that helped me build strength and increase range of motion without setting me backwards by re injuring myself. The Pilates program was an amazing way to get mobile and rediscover my bodies new limits with my injuries. Dr. Frank has an understanding of the body that seems to be a rare commodity in this day of insurance company meat shops . I still suffer from my injuries as they where extensive but Dr. Frank and the Pilates on 5th team have restored a quality of life no surgeries where able to. The best is they have given me the ability to function where I am only Partially disabled which for me is a small miracle from where I was. I thank Dr. Frank and would recommend her to anyone looking to find out what their real issues are before they have surgery or even after surgery to get the best recovery and restore as much as possible. Bought 10 classes, at the second last class I came too an earlier class by mistake. After the class the girl in reception informed me of my mistake (instead of before the class). She said the original class now counted as a "no-show" and I'd loose my last class. So because the receptionist decided to tell me afterwards, I lost a class. My mistake, but still HORRIBLE customer service. No flexibility at all. Stay away from this place, there are so many other friendlier places, that don't treat their customers like robots. read more

It would be helpful if the class sign-up were either online or not at the discretion of a random voicemail system where calls aren't returned and, after failing to receive a return message saying a class was full after a full business day, you show up to be told the class is, in fact, full and has been full for more than a day. I'm not asking for much - maybe some basic business courtesy. read more

Came here for cardiolates class. Not quite sure what to expect before i came but its a trampoline class!!! So much fun! Jumping around to tone the legs and glutes as well as arms with some weights. Good workout not too challenging tho. This place is very nice and clean and smells good. And since it is a small studio it is relatively quiet and less chaotic. The only downside is its too warm with the heat. Jumping and sweating, too much sweat, not cuz of the jumping but cuz of the heat. read more

I did a reformer class with Kate and needless to say it was a waste of time and money. I asked if we could target inner thigh/glutes and she was smug and dismissive. I asked if I could increase the resistance to make it more difficult and she told me I shouldn't. I wasn't challenged in the class nor was I sore at all the next day. You're better off to find another studio or at least a different instructor in my experience. read more

Can you imagine taking a ballet class right on the open exercise floor at New York Sports Club? While trainers and clients were chatting and doing other exercises - as though your class wasn't going on at all? That's what taking a reformer class is like here. The reformer classes are set up for 5 students, but most of the floor is set up for personal training sessions as well as a cardio class on the other end of the floor. I had 2 personal trainers simultaneously conduct exercises with their clients 2 feet from my reformer last night. I spoke up while there and emailed management previously, as well, but nothing changes. Another student said to me, "Yeah, this place is kind of noisy and you learn to grab the reformers against the wall so you can hear the teacher." There's only 5 reformers, so having to grab the right one so you can hear and focus is kind of unacceptable - and if you're a true beginner, not entirely safe, actually. I really hope this changes. I'm no expert, but joe pilates said, "You have to concentrate on what you're doing all the time. And you must concentrate on your entire body for smooth movements". A Pilates studio should facilitate - not undermine - your ability to concentrate. The present set up simply does not facilitate anyone's ability to focus. read more

I got the deal on Groupon at this place, and tried the group reformer class. I've only done private/duet pilates before, so it was my first group reformer class. Although the teacher (I believe her name was Shayla) was really great, I don't think I got as good of a workout in the group reformer because there are 5 people and she only gets a chance to go around to you once during each exercise. I definitely am not as sore as I usually am, so I clearly was doing things wrong! I would recommend a group reformer class for people who really know their stuff. There was a cardiopilates class going on in the next room where people were doing exercises while jumping on a trampoline. Clearly I took the wrong class. read more
