Chelsea Movements is located in the basement of a nondescript building on 18th street. But once you enter it you realize that they actually have a HUGE studio down there. It doesn't have a particularly catchy color scheme, the most outstanding thing about it would probably be the exposed brick wall. The studio has super calm vibe, no music which sometimes combined with the super chill vibe made me very sleepy during class. The studio is not a trendy one at all, its clientele consists of a lot of older people who go there for private sessions and people who live around the neighborhood. But realistically speaking, if you are going to get an amazing workout who cares if celebrities and beautiful people are taking class with you. You do see the occasional Lululemonite but that also has to do with the fact that the studio is in the heart of Chelsea. The staff is super knowledgeable and most of them have been teaching Pilates for over a decade. My favorite instructor is Benjamin Oyzon who is a former dancer/burner who now teaches pilates while simultaneously sharing Burning Man and other festival stories. That might actually be the reason why I like taking his class so much. They only have 5 reformers so even if you take a group class it feels like a private because the instructor gives you a lot of personal attention. I only took reformer classes but they also offer Gyrotonic, Tower and Cadillac classes. In the studio they also have a lot of props (bumpy balls, blocks, rings, resistance bands, etc.) to help you position and align yourself for different movements. Overall I was very satisfied with my experience at Chelsea Movements. I took about 15 classes in the studio and definitely saw improvement in my body and posture. The no sweat factor was also a big motivator to take more class and I can confidently say that this is studio offers unpretentious Pilates, which in New York City is very rare. Most people at the studio are regulars which I think says a lot about the studio itself. I also learned that reformer is not just laying on a bed chilling and pulling a bunch of ropes, the class is HARD and the fact that you don't sweat doesn't mean you won't sweat your ass (or abs?) off. read more

I've tried a few pilates studios, I like this one the best. I've had a few of their instructors and really like Ben and Josselyn. There was one instructor that I had that I didn't feel paid enough attention to the movement of the class' bodies and that I noticed kept looking at the clock. This really bothered me because pilates is all about doing movements correctly, you can hurt yourself if you do things too incorrectly. Overall, I just had one bad class, which wasn't even that bad. I'm relatively new to Pilates using the reformer; I have taken classes at different studios in Manhattan and can confidently say Chelsea Movements is one of the best ones around. I have gotten the most personal attention and accurate adjustments at this studio. Josselyn Levinson is a really great teacher, she knows a lot about alignment and anatomy and can accurately adjust you so you get the most out of the workout. I wasn't aware that I was doing certain movements incorrectly until taking Josselyn's class. I got the most comprehensive, challenging workout here. Wonderful Pilates studio with excellent instructors - book with Lauren and you won't be disappointed! This Pilates studio is bright and cheery with the latest equipment and well trained instructors. I initially came for the group classes, which have a 5-to-1 student to instructor ratio, and were pretty difficult! After finding a group instructor I liked (Lauren) I decided to move to private instruction. Lauren was great at pinpointing exercises for my weak areas and we worked on evening out my imbalances. This studio really has the perfect equipment for whatever your objective is. I saw her 3x a week for 3-4 months and saw great results in our time together. I am so much stronger, toned and confident in my body after coming here consistently. I cannot recommend Pilates enough! When I moved out of the area I was sad to leave this studio behind! read more

Hands down my favorite Pilates studio, and I've tried many. After almost 20 group Pilates reformer sessions, I am pretty sure I've experienced a class with every instructor. Each is different in their own way and most regularly vary their class quite a bit, which keeps things interesting. I also like the challenge, which adds to progress and keeps the hour from ever dragging. The space is open, clean, and relaxing. So many studios in NYC are very crowded. Everybody at Chelsea Movements is genuinely friendly and upbeat. As you leave, someone almost always wishes you well with the rest of your day. I absolutely love it here, I have been doing gyrotonics .with Lily on a private 1x1, since I am new to this discipline .Having a past shoulder injury I was a bit nervous, however,Lilly is so well versed in gyrotonics, she explains every movement and empowers you with her explainations, I know I am in good hands with her..The studio, is so pleasant,it has up to date machines, is clean, and has a relaxing vibe to it. The front desk who handles the scheduling are pleasant and professional, I had to switch appts a few time, and they were accommodating and understanding. This place is great! I got a LivingSocial deal (5 Pilates or gyrotonic for $69) to try it out as a newbie and absolutely love the exercise. Class reservation is easy - you can view all the classes and make reservation online. The instructors are pretty knowledgeable and the class size has been pretty small (3-4 people). The only thing is I am not sure if I will ever pay full price for Pilates reformer...so if you see another deal here, get it! read more

I took my first reformer class at Chelsea Movements. The staff seemed super knowledgeable and unpretentious, creating an inviting environment that was unintimidating and dare I say fun :) I was thrilled to score a bunch of sessions via a Bloomspot deal since the classes can be $25+ session, which is a fraction of the cost of a private session, so I definitely acknowledge the value. I've taken a dozen or more classes here so far (mostly with Ben) and I love it! The work has made me stronger and more flexible, and after about 4 months of Pilates in general (here and other studios) my body is definitely looking better too :) I've tried classes at five different studios so far and I really appreciate how straight-forward and un-intimidating Chelsea Movements is. Their staff is knowledgable, friendly and the atmosphere is always very welcoming. There's a crowd of regulars (also friendly and welcoming) who are loyal to the studio and are there all the time. That's a good sign in my book. I've overheard a lot of them remarking excitedly about the great progress they've made since becoming clients . . . also a really good sign! Ben's classes are a lot of fun-- he definitely knows his stuff and will make you laugh, which makes the time fly by! 95% of the time I take his intermediate or advanced level reformer classes. I just recently tried his Tower class and was SO sore the next day! It's a great work out. I've taken classes with a few of their other instructors as well and they've all been great. This quiet, unhurried studio offers responsible and very good training and has terrific instructors. The class was so easy it was a complete waste of time. They also canceled a noon class on me last minute and said it happens "often" if not enough people sign up. The rest of the class times were very early or late, or full, and they wouldn't give me an extension of time to use the rest of my pack. After the first bad class I just let the rest of the pack expire. Don't waste your time. read more

As a dedicated client since 2006, I came to CM with some Pilates experience but had never tried Gyrotonics and after a couple of private sessions fell in love. Chelsea Movements is a friendly neighborhood Pilates and Gyrotonics studio. The instructors are all competent and knowledgeable, and can personalize a private session based on individual needs and/or fitness goals. I've taken private sessions with three instructors there who are all great. The classes offer a challenging workout too and are limited to small groups which allow the instructor to give everyone attention. I've definitely noticed a difference in my body and overall strength since starting Pilates.
