I tried to find a Lagree studio close to where I was staying in Chelsea. I lucked out with finding Solidcore - Chelsea that was located 5 minutes walking-distance from me. I've also been wanting to try Solidcore back at home, so it worked out that I got to try Solidcore for my drop-in visit. I noticed that the studio was minimal. They didn't appear to sell any merch, water, or even grip socks (I forgot mine). That being said, i was informed that I could use the megareformer with barefeet. I was relieved that I wasn't going to be denied for class! I noticed that was actually a common practice, unlike my home studio that requires grip socks during class. The Solidcore space reminded me a lot like how Soul Cycle is. Dimly lit, music bumping, basically working out in a club. I'm here for it. I took Marcus' 11:15am full body class, and it was fantastic. He was such a great instructor and helped to encourage deeper or more challenging movements by adjusting my form. I also appreciated him spending the time to go over how their megareformers worked. Only major difference I saw was the location of the springs on the machine, but I also thought it was cool how the resistance of the springs were recommended based on how far along you are in your Solidcore practice. read more

This review is purely for the management behind solidcore... not the instructors because they are amazingly awesome! I have been to so many fitness centers and have even taught in some. Never have I come across a fitness center that charges you to put your membership on pause or charges you for another month of membership even if you can't attend the classes because they want at least 30 days notice prior to cancellation. They also charge you for individual class cancellations if they were made 10-12 hours before the start of class as well as no shows... in any case, they should be grateful if that happened because it makes room for another to sign up. It's really off-putting and it shows that they are money-hungry without any consideration for their members. Things could come up in the last minute and not everyone is in the city full time. So the wellness aspect of this fitness center is pretty much lacking... I initially wanted to pause my membership for a few months and they said there's a fee to pause membership which was a surprise and it made absolutely no sense to me. So I changed my mind and decided opt for cancellation. Then they came up with all sorts of excuses, from saying that I had signed a contract which I never did... to asking me to email them a copy of a doctor's note which I don't have because it's not medical related... I just want my membership cancelled because I found the fees to be unethical. I just don't like unethical and controlling practices and I tend to avoid them... end of story. And yes they ended up charging me for another month knowing that I wouldn't be attending and said that I can give it to my friends or family which was so wrong... I ended up calling the credit card company to reverse it. read more

When you want to step up your game, Solidcore is the right choice. There are many options, but with this workout focuses on some of the weakest areas of our bodies. Even with the most avid gym-goer (who does cardio and weights), Solidcore will take you to your next level. The workout: 50-minutes non-stop firing up your core and stability on a megaformer Pilates machine known colloquially as "Sweatlana." In the style of a typical "bootcamp" class, the instructor talks the entire time from the beginning of the class to the end. So, there isn't a "recovery" time built it. While you can take a break as you need it, the class is designed to take you to "second-stage muscle failure." In other words, to work that muscle until you are no longer able to. Within the first moments of class, you will already feel the soreness of your muscles working hard, a sign of results to come should you decide to continue forward in your journey with Solidcore. The attitude: If you are competitive with your classmates, this likely isn't the place for you. Everyone is on their own personal journey and everyone in this class supports one another in pushing their own limits to the furthest boundary possible. Ending the class with a high-five is the norm, and the only real competition is who can go slower and deeper into a move for a better, personal gain and getting closer to your goals. With a dark environment under a cool blue light, Solidcore provides a relaxed environment with an awesome playlist. You can't go wrong with most of the instructors, but I do have my favorites (Jacob, Sarah, and a few others). It's important to note that they do *not* have showers at any location, so don't expect to go straight to the office or to dinner without going home first, because more often than not you will be soaked head to toe in sweat after finishing a Solidcore class. Solid workout at [solidcore]. I found this on ClassPass and had heard good things about reformer pilates. As a regular weight lifter, this was a fun and challenging way to workout during vacation. I was a bit apprehensive because I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but the instructor Laura was super friendly. Legs were def wobbly at the end- lots of pulsing with resistance from the pilates reformer machine. I would recommend bringing a towel since you do get very sweaty and make sure your brain is turned on because you have to listen pretty closely to the instructions as they are given very quickly. That said, the instructor is helpful if you look a bit lost. All in all a positive experience! read more

I've heard this class was tougher than other reformer pilates classes so I was super scared going in but I loved it! It was my first time and the instructor was friendly and explained everything to me before class. Throughout class the instructor lets everyone know how many springs they recommend depending on how many classes they've taken, due to COVID they didn't due any hands on but would throw in tips to better our form. The music really pushes you and the energy in the room was great. After class the instructor came to me and asked me how I liked it, if I had questions, and gave me tips (which is rare in boutique fitness studios). I nearly died doing this class during my lunch hour and I have religiously worked out 4-6 times a week for the past 10 years. Whew, I am still shaking! I know that if you did this class 3-4 times a week and cut sugar and carbs out (and drinking), yes you could very easily get a 6 pack in a matter of weeks (if you're reasonably in shape). I've never been a huge Pilates person, but this was 100 times better. As some other people have mentioned, the only annoying thing is the fact that they don't have a big reception area or a locker room or showers, just two bathrooms and a small changing room. (Only downside). I was left waiting a few minutes after class was over just to run into a bathroom and change real quick. Anyway, I arrived 10 minutes early and the super positive, very fit, very charismatic instructor showed us exactly what we would be doing and how to work the Pilates reformer. Within minutes of the class starting, I was already sweating (granted, I don't do a ton of core strength classes or Pilates). Anyway, it's a lot of endurance, strength, flexibility, core and balance. I'm used to kickboxing, spin, weight lifting, interval training and yoga, and none of that even gets my heart rate going much anymore, but I was about to collapse halfway through this class. I took the class via ClassPass, but would definitely consider buying some sessions, I loved it, and loved that it was a different kind of workout. I came in here with no expectations, didn't know what to expect. I don't usually take any pilates classes so I didn't know what I was getting myself into. The instructor (shout out to Pamela T!!- love your classes!!) was super nice and came over to introduce herself - she remembered all our names throughout the class!!! Impressive and encouraging! Everyone is really encouraging in the class- friendly environment! As soon as class started OH MAN boy was I out of shape. lol sweat just started dripping immediately and i was struggling HARDDD. Each exercise of slow and controlled movement was difficult. I think they do mention that it doesn't matter how often you come you will still be struggling because there are different resistant bands. As soon as class was over I was in relief!!! got myself boston market- it's pretty close and probably counter productive but I needed it lol The next day I felt sore but the day after was even worse . Interesting workout in a nice space. The studio is brand new and well designed. As someone who was a college athlete and works out 6 days a week, I didn't find this to be "my thing." I barely sweated, and when I did, I think it's simply because they pump heat into the room. That being said, I am sore in a few new places. I also enjoy techno, dim lighting, loud music, intense workouts and they have all this. Their merch is also super comfy and sexy on all body types. I have tired several instructors and while I have my faves, I think they are all really great. It's not for everyone. You have to crave intensity and you will have to work hardcore. I attended one of the preview classes here before the official opening with a couple of friends. My friend, who is a aficionado when it comes to workouts, was very excited for this class since it featured the megaformer machine that makes it possible to work on the slow twitch muscles of the core more effectively. The key component of the machine was a sliding surface where the resistance could be controlled with different combinations of springs. Springs were color coded to make it easy to know which ones to attach to the sliding surface during each routine. Several of the routines involved one part of the body being placed on the sliding surface and another part being placed on a stable surface located at one of the ends of the machine. The core was used to slowly slide the middle surface back and forth. All of the routines were done slowly and actually was more effective than doing the same motions quickly. In this way it was very low impact. Unlike other exercise studios the temperature in this one was noticeably warmer (but not hot like in hot yoga) probably to help loosen up joints. Lightning was black light and anyone wearing white glowed. The instructor was energetic, engaging and did a sufficient job in making his rounds to correct our form when necessary. He did a good job describing the movements to follow and showed us all of them at the start of class, but the format of the room made it difficult to show the movement as the students were on the machines. The room was mirrored which was helpful to look at more experienced students to copy. Playlist was upbeat although it was odd doing slow movements to it, but at the same time the beat could be used to pulse some of the movements. The workout did a good job of strengthening the core as the effects were felt there (but not in the extremities) for 3 days afterward just as was promised in the follow up email. It was a great change of pace compared to other workouts I've done and I'd be willing to return in the future. read more

The lack of flexibility in this place is insane. I've been going to workout classes forever, and am always early or on time but I arrived a few minutes late due to the train (a very common occurrence in NYC) for my first ever class and I needed a code to get in that I had to download the app for and then the only way to speak to someone was in the studio. They had no one at the front desk, which means I would've had to wait 50 min for class to be over. I totally value punctuality but I can't control public transport In NYC and definitely feel like they at least need to have someone at the front desk that is not just the instructor who is going to teach the class. It's a clean studio with a great workout and community vibe. Maybe you're checking this out to compare to other options. I've done them all; Groupon bootcamps, kickboxing, MMA, personal training, TRX, classes offered at gyms, etc. People may wonder if it's worth the price, but to me it's priceless. It's priceless to actually be excited to work out, to want to be better the next class, to be part of a community and team, and to see results. Malia was an awesome coach! You absorb her energy and enthusiasm. She'll lay off you when you need a breather, but push you when you're trying to finish off a move. It's a great balance and optimizes your workout. Malia creates a perfect environment with a fun playlist, motivating advice, and overall excitement that everyone's getting a great workout. It doesn't matter what level you are. This class can be tailored to and motivate a work out beginner, and also challenge a hardcore athlete. I know how both feel. Years ago I was a boxer and have also trained with professional football players and golfers. However, this year I've hit a slump and my first workout in forever was this solidcore class. I was by far the "worst" one, but it was cool because the lights are low, there are plenty of people to mimic, and the moves are very slow so you have time to get in position. I couldn't have asked for a better class to get myself back in action. You'll use muscles you've never felt before, and you'll be amazed on how much you can push your body without running/jumping around or lifting heavy weights. Now I want to build on everything I did in that class. I do stairs instead of elevators, planks while cooking, and lunges while walking my dog. When you're 15 minutes into your first class, think how if you did this 2-3x a week, how great you'll look for the holidays and how money you'll look in the summer. I absolutely love [solidcore] but had never been to this location. It's situated in a great area with tons of restaurants and cafes at which you can undo everything for which you worked after a class at this studio. It's as beautiful and clean as always, and a bomb workout as well. A group of us decided to come in for a class as a way to celebrate our friend's bday, and it was a great experience in every way possible! We had Leo Hunt as our instructor, and he has been by absolute favorite to have in class so far! I could barely hold the planks bc I was laughing so hard at certain points. He's fresh, funny, and witty and truly made the workout so enjoyable for us all while still pushing us hard. The workout is always consistent across all instructors, and we all left a little more wobbly. Some were first timers and were left in awe at some of the things we had to do, but we all know they'll be back for more soon. Solidcore is absolutely incredible and life-changing. It's your typical reformer pilates class X Barry's in one class. For starters, reformer pilates is already an incredible workout to begin with. Reformer machines look scary, but they're actually quite easy to use once you've had one class anywhere and an instructor walks you through the different parts of the machine. I do a mix of different workouts, but reformer pilates is regularly in my cycle since it targets muscles that are weak are hard to target. The resistance of a reformer machine is hard to replicate in a normal gym setting. I've taken classes from a few different instructors and have liked them all. They really keep you accountable to do finishing every last movement. You always start with an (intense) ab warmup. I'm usually dying by this point around, but the rest of the workout is just as good/challenging. You will likely be dripping sweat at some point during your workout. The facility is nice, modern, dark, and has your typical amenities i.e. bathroom, deodorant, hair ties, water fountain, etc. Big downside compared to other boutique fitness classes is that there is no shower. As far as how it compares to other reformer pilates classes (i.e. SLT, Bodyrok, Wundabar, etc.), it's definitely the most challenging, and the only place where there's music blasting. When I want something relatively slower-paced (but still challenging), more brightly lit, and chiller music, Wundabar is my next favorite pilates studio. +Love that you can book through Classpass. read more

I love SLT, but they're not on Class Pass. So when Solidcore opened up I decided to try it. I've only gone to a handful of classes but I'm already addicted. The workout is very similar to SLT, but you hold the movements for a longer period of time, and there are more holds incorporated throughout. I was dying my first time, but I've already gotten noticeably stronger in the past month that I've been going. All the instructors I've taken are very good, I just wish they were a little more attentive to form. Also, I recommend wearing grip socks because the machines are pretty slippery. The studio is spacious enough, although the reception area is super cramped and crowded during peak times. I've actually been going to Solidcore more often than SLT because not only is Solidcore on ClassPass, they also offer way better packages and discounts. I'm officially hooked! read more

Sooo excited this workout moved to NYC with me! I found it a few years ago when I was living in DC and have been addicted ever since. This workout is amazing, the coaches are motivating, and the community is as solid as the abs you'll start to see poking through almost right away. It's good that it works so well because it's not cheap! The one downside of it coming to NYC is the NYC prices. I'm also super stoked that I can take Pamela's classes again because she was amazing in DC and has amped it up even more for here. This studio is a little bigger than my go-to DC one (Mt Vernon), has a fridge with various beverages including water and protein, a small selection of Solidcore-branded swag, combo lockers, and refresh supplies in the bathrooms (but no showers) I also took a preview class with Jacob who was awesome the whole time, and I'm sure the other coaches will be great. I wish there were a few other membership options that were a little more budget-friendly (like maybe a flex membership or something where you could carry over the monthly packages). I seriously considered buying the early adopter unlimited but couldn't take the $$$ plunge. But that being said, there's a reason I keep paying for these classes, and it's not just that I am a bit of a reckless spender... it's also such a great place to go to get out of your head while working muscles that you don't normally use. The coaches emphasize feeling stronger instead of skinnier which is a welcome change from some classes that focus more on looking good. The studio is mirrored but the lighting is kept dim so it's not intimidating and the blue light makes everyone look amazing. To anyone already familiar with the workout, not much more needs to be said. But to those who haven't tried it yet, you should definitely go! read more

Just finished my new client 3-pack for $79. As a former SLT fan (until the location by me closed), I was looking to supplement my regular workouts, which are Pure Empower at Pure Barre (think barre with weights on your ankles and your wrists) and Physique 57's Signature II classes. Since I'd read about the differences between SLT and [solidcore], I took beginner classes for all 3 classes, two with coach Cam and one with coach Sarah. All three classes resulted in post-exercise ab and hamstring "good" muscle soreness. Some thoughts: * [solidcore] dims the lights, which can make it slightly more difficult to see your form in the mirror or to watch your neighbor if you're a newbie. On the flip side, you're not distracted by the mirror. * The [solidcore] coaches talk continuously into their headsets with instructions. At first I wasn't sure I'd like this, but it turns out to be pretty helpful. * I found the springs a bit tricky to adjust on my first visit (it's a hook-type attachment which differs from the Megaformers I've previously used). No issues on visits 2 and 3. * The music is loud, which can sometimes make it difficult to hear the coach. * Some of the moves are similar to those at SLT. * Both Sarah and Cam constantly walked the room and offered encouragement and minor adjustments. * The room is warm. With the slow, controlled movements, I'd periodically be dripping sweat. * No changing rooms, but there are two bathrooms and small self-locking lockers. read more

Solidcore is a newish entry to the world of New York boutique fitness studios, and fills the gap in its offerings of megaformer studios. People who don't think of Pilates as a real workout have clearly never tried the megaformer. The megaformer has been around since around 2005, and offers 5 components of exercise- strength, cardio, endurance, composition, and flexibility. For those who have tried a Pilates reformer machine, the megaformer is much heavier, and much more of an intense workout. Solidcore opened in NYC in 2018, and my friend and I tried a free community class when it opened. We both loved the classes, and were sore for days afterwards. Occasionally they will offer cheaper community classes ($15), so we managed to get spots on a recent Saturday, and came back. The instructors here are all nice, positive and encouraging, though they do have a tendency to go through instructions very fast. The studio features blue lights, and hip music, as many New York studios do. One of the drawbacks of this studio though, is that there is no real changing area, no showers, and just two bathrooms. Other than that, this is an amazing and addictive workout from which you will see results. read more

Excellent idea and mostly fine execution BUT they blast the music at dangerously loud levels. The volume is set by corporate policy, so local staff can't do anything but comply, sympathize and place a bowl of free ear plugs at the front desk. You can get physically fit without destroying your hearing, but not here. I do soulcycle 4-5 times a week along with various yoga and Pilates classes to supplement my cardio workout. Today I took a class with Ashley at Solidcore and this place is amazing. NOwhere in the contract does it say that I am entering into a 6 month subscription. I just took my first class at Solidcore and I was pleasantly surprised! Malia was a fantastic instructor. She has infectious energy and took the time to greet all of the students before class, familiarizing herself with their athletic backgrounds, and making sure all first timers (like myself!) had adequate time to learn how to use the machine. She broke down the mechanics so anyone could understand, which I appreciate especially since I've never taken a similar class before! I also appreciated her attention to detail during the class. Her verbal cues were super easy to understand and made it a quick learning curve to in order to correct poses/form. She also provided hands on assists where necessary, which were effective. She also had a great playlist. If you're ever in the area, take this class with Malia! You and all of the muscles you didn't know you had will thank you! read more

I am by no means out of shape, I workout a minimum of 5 days a week for my entire adult life. I took this class yesterday and I have never been so sore or in more pain in my entire life (but like borderline in a bad way). I bent over last night and my back spasmed and has been in serious pain ever since and I think it has to do with this class. The class was very challenging and compared to a harder slt which I have taken multiple times. I think the sequences are done for way too long and should be shortened. I also think the teachers fail to really pay attention to people's form. Overall as I said very challenging, but they have a lot of room for improvement in order for people to not be injured. read more

They say their cameras don't work though and have been entirely unhelpful in getting the stuff back. She also still works there. I wanted to like this place but they didn't even try. I got in a couple of minutes before my class and heard the instructor going over the basics. By the time I went in she was done but assured me I'll be able to follow along. The equipment they have is pretty complicated. We started with some core workouts and I constantly had to look at the girl next to me to even slightly figure out what was going on.The instructor was talking at like 20 words per second and once in a while I'll catch a little nuance to the movement she was asking to do. Apart from the fact that it's easy to be injured if you're not using the equipment properly, I found that there is just bare minimal accommodation for new clients especially with such complex equipment. There is no correcting of posture or technique although there were only 5 other people in the class and the instructor was only walking up and down the room. It's a shame and I wouldn't want to be in a workout where I'm feeling like I'm not getting the best, for the price they're charging as well. I ended up leaving mid class - it was that bad- and spoke to the lady at the desk who barely said a word on response. read more

This is the hardest workout I've ever done -- harder than Barrys, SoulCycle, and PureBarre. It works out muscles I would never normally work out. Every single time, I'm drench in sweat and shaking. The breakdown: A challenging megaformer class-- think pilates/strength training hybrid on crack where you will feel sore for days. The studio is gorgeous and clean with inspirational quotes everywhere. **Warning** this is a long review and basically a PDA love note to Solidcore so if you are done reading after this point, totally understand... Solidcore is my favorite choice for Megaformer workouts. I'm originally from Northern Virginia and I first discovered this crazy workout when I was home during the holidays a few years ago. Ever since then, I've always booked a class whenever I've been home and actually even submitted a request for Solidcore to open up their next studio in NYC way back when. Very glad the Solidcore angels heard and finally answered me. When they announced they were opening in NYC and near my apartment no less, it was fate. I immediately booked a package. I am a big fan of megaformer workouts. I've been to Lagree classes when I was living in LA; SLT, Flex, and BodyRok in NYC, and Solidcore in VA/DC area (and now in NYC too). By far Solidcore is the best imo and WAY harder than any of the other classes I've taken at other studios. Sweatlana--the unique Solidcore machine you won't find anywhere else is also diff than the typical megaformer and I love it way more. Pros: - I am a big fan of Pamela T, the studio manager and pro coach. She is the only instructor I've been to here that actually remembers my name and says hi to me every time she sees me. It's those little things that make this studio great and different than other places where you're just another number. I try to go out of my way to go to her classes. - There are two bathrooms, a small closet to change, lockers (with built in locks), and a water fountain. - RX bars and cold bottled water available for purchase - Clean and new equipment - Location is convenient for all train lines on 23rd street - On ClassPass! I use ClassPass as well as buy classes from the studio. If you have ClassPass, it definitely makes the class more easily accessible. Cons: - No showers. Not a big deal for me personally because I live close to this location. But this is good to know if you plan on doing a morning class, sweat like a beast, and then need to head straight to work. - Price. Yes this is a pricey class to take and will deter some from going but it's also on ClassPass so you can try it through that too. And in terms of price --you need to compare apples to apples. You can't compare Solidcore to Flywheel or Barrys. Compare Solidcore to other megaformer classes like SLT. Solidcore is the same price as SLT classes at $40 for a single class and I find Solidcore way more worth it. Solidcore has a friendly community with super nice instructors that KNOW your name and correct your form. I'd choose Solidcore over SLT any day of the week. However, I will say that something I would like to see is the off-peak, on-peak pricing that the Solidcore Virginia studios have where you can pay slightly less for classes that are not as popular. The takeaway: - Solidcore is consistently great and I highly recommend trying it at least once. They have some really amazing intro deals that you should take advantage of. Also I recommend trying a variety of instructors to see who is your fit before you make up your mind on the class entirely. Each had their own style. The first class is the hardest but then you'll be addicted to the feeling of your abs hurting while you laugh the next day. Give it a shot! Nothing to lose but your pant size. read more

Really awful customer service. I intended to sign up for their 12 o'clock class. Unfortunately, I accidentally clicked the wrong time and signed up for their 10:35 class. Mistakes happen. However, it's how they dealt with this mistake that was really frustrating. I tried calling to switch to the 12 o'clock class which had plenty of space. The front desk people refused. They could not have been more rude. They didn't offer any solutions, any help or anything remotely near customer service to rectify the situation. Not only that, but the person I spoke with was pretty abrasive. Not the type of service any paying customer should have to deal with. So I guess I essentially paid to be berated on the phone. read more

[Solidcore] is an incredible fitness class! The workout requires as much mental strength as it does physical and the instructors are very supportive. Pamela's class is one of my favorites--it is very motivational and tests every muscle in your body, but so worth it! I am so glad to have found a class that I can consistently come to and find strength and enjoyment every time. All of the instructors push your muscles to failure, but in that failure you find strength. Trust me, you'll leave here feeling like a [badass]! read more

Don't waste your time here there are plenty of other good pilates studios in the city. The reformers first of all were so slippery and poorly built I thought I was going to get injured the whole class. The instructor was not that good either. Long story short, I went here frequently for about a month or two - always making a point of telling the instructors that I have a weak lower back and am not great at reformer stuff so to please check my form, offer modifications, etc. They always said yes, they'd do so, etc. Their instructors range from neglectful (just not offering anything and then asking at the end if I felt ok) to pushy (one would literally stand next to me and put her hand on my back making me do more reps). I got pretty badly injured here, and asked to cancel my membership. I found them to be pretty rude and condescending, telling me that I probably messed up the form (I mean, this is literally why I asked them to watch out for me) and that their instructors were trained to help with this (perhaps, but they didn't, so..). I guess the best I can say is that they eventually did refund my membership which they didn't have to, but I went from someone who was doing HIIT, boxing, and yoga 4x a week (and walking 20k steps a day) to someone who has now spent hundreds on PT, sports medicine, etc and can't do any exercise except extremely gentle yoga. I hurt myself in August. There was a point where I couldn't even bend past my knees because I was in so much pain. I still can't put on my pants without holding onto a wall. Would avoid unless you're already extremely extremely comfortable with reformers. read more

So expensive, but so so so good. I have tried a lot of classes but this one works your muscles on a deeper level than I have ever experienced and in the places that are hard to get such as the abs including obliques. My only gripe is the cost and the fact that they don't have showers. Great instructors and music too. read more
