The inn is close to the Blackstone River which is a beautiful place to take a walk, bike ride or rollerblade. It is about 25 minutes from Providence, RI which is a great city to visit. The rooms in the inn are themed, for example, you can choose from the Rose Room, the Lilac Room, Almost Heaven and the Treehouse Sweets. In the summer, relaxing by the pool is a lovely way to spend the day. I highly reccomend Morin's Hideaway if you are visiting the area!

But I'm here to talk about smells. They clean the floors with lemon-scented Pine Sol. The downstairs is all hardwood floors so it has a distinct lemon smell in the air. The room was lovely but they washed the blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and towels with a strong scented detergent. As a super smeller, this was really my only complaint. If I hadn't brought my own pillow, I would have had to leave. Luckily I was able to sleep with help from allergy meds and my personal pillow. The smell of the air outside was clean and beautiful. Fresh Connecticut air! If detergent smells don't bother you, this is a great place to stay. I suggest they consider switching to hypoallergenic (free &. clear) detergent for those of us very sensitive noses!

For myself, I don't need a B&B with the pricey high-end amenities. When I'm on vacation or traveling, I'm either trying to get away from it all, or can drive to a shop specializing in those things if I really must. Gilbert's was perfect for me. An old family farm, converted to a B&B, was quiet and comfortable. I appreciate the classic, not-so-modern, character of an old home. The interior was tastefully and simply decorated with antique period pieces supplemented with modern decor. The yellow pine hardwood floors throughout the house were gorgeous and were what caught my eye immediately. The old barn and paddock were hiding places for the three outdoor cats. The wild turkeys occasionally perched in the tall trees. The proprietor, an adorable woman, showed me through the house with all the nooks and crannies and hidden rooms that made me realize the house was a lot bigger than it appears from the outside. I couldn't have gone wrong with any room I picked. What made it feel like home, were the interactions with the owners, who greeted me, and the other guests, both upon arrival and at the end of the day when we returned from our adventures. At end end of my visit, I didn't want to leave. I already felt like I was home. And the good-bye hug went a long way to making me wish I could stay and and the same time start planning the next visit. Just like a visit to mom 's or grandma's.

Here are some issues we experienced during our stay at the Christopher Dodge House: My first morning after shaving, the bathroom sink had a slow drain. I have a sink full of shaving cream. I told the manager at breakfast and I received a text around 11am saying they'd fix the issue. I left around 1:30pm, the housekeeping-maintenance staff was gone! I spoke with Kate, the front desk manager who was the one who fixed the sink, made the bed and gave us fresh towels. (Love Kate) Our room was very charming. A large King Size bed with a pretty quilt gave us the feeling that we're staying in someone's home. From the exposed brick in the bedroom to the homemade cookies, it was all very welcoming. When Kate gave us a tour, we were shown the coffee station. This was all free but the bottled water is on the honor system and not free? Strange but ok... Let's break it down: Bath products: Dove Shampoo/Conditioner/Body Wash. It did the job, was it special? Nah. Bath towels were thick and plush. Bed/Pillows: Firm mattress, firm pillows. I guess it all depends on your preference. Breakfast: This was some High School Home Economics, basic food served to us. Each day we had two choices written on the blackboard, substitutes weren't mentioned to us. The first day I chose French Toast with bacon. The bacon was overcooked and the French Toast was Wonder bread with hardly any cinnamon. Pure Maple Syrup on each table was a plus. The continental breakfast communal table had cereal, hard boiled eggs and toast. A very basic breakfast selection. Today my wife and I both had the special of the day: Blueberry Dutch Baby. My wife's breakfast was wet and jiggly? Each day we left the dining room underwhelmed. Parking: If you stayed in a hotel, it would cost on average $30 per night. We had free parking during our stay. I had leg surgery a few weeks ago, to check into the B&B it's a very steep staircase to get to the front desk. If you have mobility issues, this would be a challenge. Christopher Dodge House is a beautiful, New England Bed and Breakfast in Providence RI. Free parking and close proximity to everything was a plus.

The owners were friendly and welcoming. In the morning we got a delicious and plentiful breakfast cooked "on demand". Also, our wish for late checkout was no problem for the owner. We mainly came for the foliage and for that it is an amazing place - maple trees are all over the place! Just a short drive away is a nice little hike (The Rock House Reservation) as well as a pond with a restaurant right at it. Also, the local pumpkin festival just happened the day we arrived. When I arrived at Boston's Logan Airport, rain was falling and the sky overhead was dark and gray…read more By the time I drove through Ted William's Tunnel, past Fenway Park to the 95 North, and connected onto Route 2A, however, the sun broke though the clouds and bathed everything in golden sunlight. Off of Route 2A on Lexington Road in the heart of Minutemen country, I arrived at the Hawthorne Inn, my favorite bed and breakfast in Concord, Massachusetts. The owner of the inn, Marilyn, greeted me at the entrance and showed me to my room. The inn is furnished with furniture, art, and artifacts that are representative of colonial New England of the 19th Century with other kinds of art, such as Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Haitian voodoo masks, and 17th Century Persian helmets, scattered about here and there. Walking into my room, I noticed a cat on the 4 poster bed in my room. It was very comfortable, very cozy. I hung out in my room with the cat for a while before going out to downtown Concord for dinner. After dinner I sat in the sitting room downstairs where the fireplace was blazing and I met some of the other guests in the inn. We talked some more in the morning when we ate breakfast in the communal dining room together. Breakfast included your choice of coffee, tea, muffins and other baked goods, a seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, or granola. Rooms at the inn range from $125 - $325 per night depending on the season. After breakfast, I went into downtown Concord to look for an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which I found in a book in my room. In the essay Emerson emphasizes the importance of avoiding conformity and trusting in our own ideas and instincts: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string...." This spirit of individuality and the belief that there is no problem that we can't handle if we apply ourselves to the solution is what attracts me to New England, to Concord, to the Hawthorne Inn. There's a sense of history there where our country was essentially founded, a creative energy burns there also where so many creative thinkers and writers lived. Walden Pond, the Minutemen Park, the old North Bridge where the "first shot heard round the world" was fired are all in Concord. It's worth visiting to remember that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."
