What happened here? I was really excited to try Pilsen Yards just by looking at what great things they did to the place. Their food really missed the mark, by a longshot. We came in for brunch and we wished we would have gone to get Carnitas down the block instead. The place looks beautiful, don't get me wrong. Also that Patio is perfect for Chicago Patio Season. I just don't think the price point for the drinks and food is worth it. They had a vegan pozole, that was so bad. It wasn't salvageable. It was so bad, they put tofu in there. The tacos were not good, we tried a bunch of them. Don't do it. The Shrimp taco was not fresh, and left a bad taste in my mouth. The Taco Arabes chicken was dry and the pastor was just alright. The Nachos came out kind of soggy but the highlight of the meal was those shishito peppers, so good. Would I come here again to maybe see if they work out those new business kinks. I used to come here a decent amount. There's better food, and for better prices, elsewhere in Pilsen, but Pilsen Yards is a reliable choice with food that's quite tasty and almost always a spot available without a reservation, as the space is huge. The flautas and chicken enchiladas, for example, are consistent and tasty. They also get you in-and-out without too much of a wait, so it was a great option if you were about to catch a show at Thalia Hall. However, the last time I was here we experienced some of the most eggregious upselling I've experienced. When we first sat down, the waiter asked us if he could get us some chips and guac. The way he phrased it our friend (who hadn't been there before) assumed it came included, like chips and salsa is at many restaurants in the area. We clarified it was an appetizer, but since we were hungry and were familiar with the prices of an appetizer here, we felt comfortable saying OK even though we hadn't had a chance to look at the menu. What we didn't realize is that chips and guac wasn't one menu item, it was two: chips and salsa ($5) and guac ($6). I'm used to being careful about ordering at restaurants, but that felt more sneaky than necessary, as he didn't mention that it was two appetizers or mention anything about the salsa at all. I used to come here mostly out of conscience, and at this point, I'd rather work a little harder and go to a different neighborhood restaurant I can trust, rather than go here for the ease of it but have to be on guard about this type of upselling. read more

This place, by far, is one of my favorite Pilsen haunts. When I moved to the neighborhood, one of my chef buddies recommended it so I went to check it out. I ALWAYS eat at the bar. Why? The cochinita pibil is decent, as are the carrots al pastor. The sweet corn tamales are okay. Unfortunately the tortilla chips here are not great, which affected the chilaquiles on their brunch menu and the chips they bring to the table. Pilsen yards is quickly becoming one of my new favorite places. I have been for dinner and brunch recently and the food and vibes are fantastic! They have a beautiful covered heated patio and additional outdoor patio space. I tried one of each of the tacos were all really good, but the chicken taco and sweet potato taco was my favorite. I also had the Chilaquiles which were amazing. They were very flavorful and they were not soggy. I will for sure be going back! P.S. They were great about adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. First of all, the service here is out of bounds! They have the friendliest, most attentive staff. Johnny was our server and he was absolutely wonderful (give that man a raise!!). When it comes to drinks, 'It's Like a Paloma' is maybe the best Paloma I've had at a restaurant. I also tried the Cadillac margarita but that wasn't my favorite. Food-wise, we ordered guac and tacos. I tried the fish taco and the shrimp taco. To be honest, both were just ok. I'm a fish taco fiend and this one didn't have enough slaw or sauce for me personally. They have a ton of seating both indoor and outdoor making it a great place for so many different occasions. As we entered, we were greeted by the kindest staff who showed us to our table where we were meeting friends. Our server came to us almost immediately to get our food and drink order. If you never have, you HAVE to try the Beer for Tacos, it's...amazing. I'm not super into beer but I'll always go for a gose and this one didn't disappoint. My wife and I had an awesome Sunday funday brunch at Pilsen Yards yesterday. We started with the sweet corn tamale which was great and our main was the churro french toast and steak + frites. Unexpectedly, we were surprised with a plate of nachos that had the most flavorful and tender beef. We were in the great hands of Karla who was super friendly and always available with keeping our drinks full. Aaron was also extremely helpful in lending assistance. The owner also popped in to check on us along with other tables. Overall, it was a great experience and the environment there is very chill but upbeat in a very inviting way. This is from the same owner's of Monnie Burke's which is family owned but I never been 'cause I don't live in the area. The food menu is short 'cause the spirits and beers are the epitome. I had the nachos with beef which were good. For nine dollars the portion was a little small I expected it to be bigger. Mostly everything including drinks are under ten dollars. Also you can buy art from local artists. PS. The Carrots Al Pastor is not pork which they should note. They have a speakeasy called The Alderman which is very small and tight. I wish they had maybe one more vegan main dish, but the carrots and shisitos were SO good that you can't be upset about that. The sauces were unique and delicious. The outdoor space is really nice, and the service is incredible. I wanted to be friends with our server, he was just so nice. One thing for the owners-- please consider a dedicated veggie/chips fryer. As both a vegan and someone with a fish allergy, it's really dangerous to have a shared fryer.
