This place is a yes, yes, and yes! I have a buddy that loves Tiki bars and found this place/made a reservation, so our group came to visit on a Sunday night. The vibe is speakeasy-ish; the entrance is off the street in an alleyway but the interior is very nice, low light, and would be fun for a date night! The staff were attentive and very friendly. My friend got some shots, which were surprisingly good given they were kind of sweet, and I ordered the "mystic lamp" cocktail ($16) which was VERY memorable to me as someone that loves floral drinks -- it was very floral, slightly fruity, and had a lovely chunk of lychee it came with which was delicious! The drink was decent sized too; I've been charged a lot more for much less drink at other speakeasies (those of which I don't plan to visit again any time soon haha). In my opinion, this spot has the perfect combo of great drinks, nice ambiance, cool speakeasy-vibes, but also cheerfulness given the tiki-theme inside. I can't understand what the fuss is all about here. I couldn't wait to leave. This place represents itself as a tiki bar but is the most half-hearted attempt I have ever seen. I was excited for the experience having heard how busy it gets, blah blah. These positive reviewers need to seek out other tiki bars. After you negotiate the alley entrance and go down dangerously dark stairs, you are met with crazy boring decor. I kept thinking there had to be more right? The whole point of a tiki bar is to strike a mood, but hanging a very few polynesian masks on the wall, putting up a grass facade over the bar and dressing the servers in vaguely polynesian outfits is sad. I've seen private tiki bars at people's homes that are more exciting. Add to this a comparably boring music selection played far too loud over boomy lo-fi speakers and you'll wonder what's going on here. So what about the food and drink? Completely uninspired for anyone who's had more than a mai tai before in their life. About a dozen extremely common drink choices is all you get!! No specials, that's it. When I asked if this was the whole cocktail menu, the server said it was but they have a full bar so you can get anything you want. Well, I could get that service at just about any bar in the world, so big deal. Maybe it would be better if you sat at the bar and chatted up the bartender. One could also go taste their rum selections and other cocktails in the Bamboo Room, but I hate that kind of elitist nonsense. That's never been what tiki bars were about. The drinks we sampled were okay at best. Even the namesake 3 Dots and A Dash cocktail was lackluster and used cheap cherries for the dots instead of classic Luxardos. (If you know, you know) The appetizers were okay, but way overpriced. 5 tiny spring rolls for $18. Come on guys, enough already. Drinks were served pretty fast considering it was a Friday night that was fairly packed (maybe waited 3 minutes for a drink once my friend ordered) . My friend said he thoroughly enjoyed his drink and loved the combination in the Royal Hawaiian mocktail! Will definitely come back and try something next time with friends when the night is right. Not really disability friendly from what I had been seen or shown (there was only a staircase to enter in and out of) with little seating around if you don't have a reserved table (which was fair for a Friday night on a whim, not a complaint whatsoever). They were good size and simply delicious. Well balanced. Not too sweet and not artificially sweet. It's clear those making them knew how to make real cocktails. The ambiance is true tiki. It is large but there were people surrounding our table because it was close to the bar. If you make a reservation and pay a deposit, make sure to make your server aware. The quickly made adjustments for us, but this was an issue in ensuring we got our credit. I would recommend getting a reservation in their smaller internal bar for a more intimate experience and more commonly crafted drinks. Our only qualm was that the Junglebird didn't come dressed up at all...as almost all the drinks on the menu come in specific, themed glassware that adds to ambiance and effect of the experience...but that drink just came in a boring glass cup! I have no idea what they did, but it was next-level delicious. The steak skewers were pure perfection--tender, buttery, and practically melted in your mouth. The bartender who helped me was super personable that I made some recommendations and talked about a few different drinks they had. I want you to make sure eyes picked wisely. I ended up going with their namesake drink three dots and a dash which I thought was really good. And I ordered the chicken bites as an appetizer that came with three sauces That I also enjoyed. I got in on the last night of the prior seasonal menu so I got to try one of the drinks before they came off and had the sweater weather as well. The drink was pretty good and I'm really glad it was recommended. Ed, they also have a merchroom with a bunch of different tiki glasses available. I picked up one of their newer glasses to take home which came on a little box in a nice little gift bag. While the bar has a Clark Street address, true to speakeasy fashion you actually enter through the alley. Booths line three walls, high-top tables fill the center of the room, and a long bar backed by an impressive display of liquor bottles anchors the space. Since we visited in December, the room was decorated with festive silver wreaths, and there was a special menu of holiday cocktails. I ordered the Eggnog Grasshopper, while my husband chose the 1944 Mai Tai. Both drinks were refreshing and delicious, though on the small side. We also shared a Gingerbread Painkiller and an order of Prime Skirt Steak Skewers. The skewers were tender, moist, and full of flavor--absolutely delicious. Now for the annoying part: When you make a reservation, they charge you ahead of time (about $20 per person), which is supposed to go toward your final tab. At the Bamboo Room, the bartender made sure it was applied no problem. But at the main bar, our server "forgot" to apply the credit. After we paid, we noticed the total seemed high, asked for the receipt, and only then did she admit it and say she'd refund it. Felt kinda sketchy, to be honest. Heads-up: make sure your prepaid credit actually gets applied before you pay the bill. To the owners I get that you're trying to prevent no-shows, but precharging guests and then making them chase down their credit just leaves a bad taste. Maybe just take a card hold instead? Getting a server's attention was also tough initially but once the first round came those tiki drinks made my stresses melt away. First order was a 44 Mai Tai and an off-menu Singapore Sling, followed by a Pearl Diver and Three Dots and a Dash -- all well-executed and served in unique vessels with typically tropical garnishes. While we enjoyed our drinks, the noisy environment made it hard to fully relax; it felt less like a getaway and more like a pre-convention mixer. Maybe on a different night or at a different time with a different crowd, I'd have enjoyed the experience more. Total bill was $75 for four drinks, so not a cheap date. After a warm day in the sun and a 90-minute architecture boat tour, my wife and I were ready for a refreshing break--and Three Dots and a Dash was just the escape we needed. This hidden speakeasy tiki bar is tucked away down an alley and through an unmarked door, leading to a cool, dark basement full of fun and mysterious tiki decor. We didn't have a reservation, but the host kindly let us in as long as we could wrap up our visit within 90 minutes--which was no problem for us. (Next time, we'll definitely make a reservation to enjoy a more relaxed stay.) I ordered the Painkiller, a coconut and rum-based drink that was exactly what I was craving--tropical, smooth, and not overly sweet. My wife ordered a whiskey-based cocktail with passionfruit and lemon, which didn't quite work for her palate. Fortunately, our server was incredibly accommodating and swapped it out for the Painkiller as well--problem solved! We also shared the steak skewer appetizer, which came with lettuce wraps and a flavorful sauce. Honestly, we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was, considering it's mainly known as a cocktail bar. We'd definitely recommend checking it out--especially on a hot Chicago day.
