I don't drink so I can't comment about the plentiful vegan drinks, but I can, however, comment about the food. :) I also know Pine Box does a lot of trivia nights and fun sort of events, which is always welcome. I went to Pine Box recently for their final vegan waffle brunch of the season; they say they may start it up again next spring. I went with the berry waffles, which were good and pretty reasonable. I'd say the taste was average and they were served on a paper plate, but it's a bar, for goodness sakes, so I'm happy with that. :) My friends and I also shared some vegan empanadas which are made by V Spot in Park Slope. My favorite was the jerk seitan, which was nice and spicy. The sauce it came with was also really good and came in a huge plastic cup. I tried my friend's Philly Cheesesteak empanada, which would have been amazing if either 1) it didn't have mushrooms, or 2) I didn't hate mushrooms. The flavor and texture was right on, so if you're not opposed to fungus, I'd recommend that one. Again, I don't drink so I don't care all that much that there's a vegan bar in my neighborhood (aside from obviously beinig happy that there's no meat/dairy on the menu), but in the event that I'm roped into "going for drinks", I'm happy to have a vegan establishment to suggest. :) read more

My band played Pine Box a few nights ago. The club was clean and the staff was friendly, but the real reason we dug this place was the sound setup. The engineer was very knowledgeable and did a great job of making us sound good without blowing out everyone's eardrums. My go-to quick stop for great draft beer and dressed-up bloodies. Pine Box boasts an extensive, well-crafted (no pun intended) beer list and several bloody mary options. Last time I was in, I came during happy hour and was excited to see a "dressed-down" bloody mary for $7. Side note: not sure how 2 pickled okras, celery, and olives are "dressed down" but I was pleasantly surprised. i used to love this place but WE ARE NEVER COMING BACK TO THIS BAR AGAIN. i understand that during the vegan shop up it is busy but when you serve every other customer but us that is just plain rude! we waited over half and hour for drinks. instead of serving us you guys made everyone else drinks, changed the tv station, took a smoke break and blatantly ignored us. at one point one bartender took away the empty glasses in front of us- long left over from other customers- and i waved and asked if we could please order drinks. obviously the answer was NO because my question was ignored. at another point my husband standing up on the edge of his stool to get your attention was told "we see you, don't stand on the stool". i am not sure why you refused to serve us but you LOST CUSTOMERS TODAY. i have never been treated this way in a bar before. so unprofessional, just plain shitty. Update: friends who took our seats at the bar said they had no trouble getting drinks. proving that the bartenders were ignoring us on purpose. pine box you are the worst. read more

I love this place. It is the place I HAVE TO return to every time in back in the old neighborhood. I love the beer selection, the staff, the set up of the place, and, most of all, the smell! Super spacious with high ceilings. They a small venue in the back where they hold shows or karaoke nights. Our bartender was super friendly and gave us a round of shots before we left. They serve food as well, and they have vegan options. My cousin got an empanada, which turned out to be pretty small. I expected it to be much bigger since it was on the pricey side. I suggest eating before hand. It'll add up once you get drunker and hungrier. P.S. There's a coat rack at the front where you can just hang your coats at no charge. Definitely coming back! read more

Ok, came here late at night, saw "cocktail bar", hurray, it's open! ...ok, I see one of their signature cocktails is, get this, vanilla vodka and orange soda. This is apparently important enough to get a wooden sign on the wall. Well, how bad can their seasonal drinks be? The Pine Box Rock Shop used to be a casket factory in the 'Schwick, so they say. Even jammed with wall-to-wall people, you can tell this is a cavernous space. I was here for the Vegan Shop-up today; having been to the one in Manhattan last month that was held in a tiny tea shop on Crosby street, I was stoked for this and to finally see the Pine Box Rock Shop. Many of my favorite vegan businesses were represented, including Champs (bakery/restaurant in Williamsburg) and Black and Blanco (bakery.) Plus I got to have a fresh-made coconut uttapham, courtesy of Uttapham and Co! (This had thick chunks of coconut on the rolled, taco-like pastry; it was too good to be true.) I hate to be this person. Giving a crappy review even though I drank and ate nothing from here but my hand was forced. So here we go . . . I ordered something off they're special drink menu but the bartender said they didn't have an essential ingredient to make it. So I asked what else they couldn't make because I notoriously will order something else they don't have. Well, he didn't like that question. So he refused to make drinks for me and my friends. Pine Box Rock Shop is a vegan bar in Brooklyn. The draft list is decent and the service friendly. People seem to enjoy the vegan empanadas. The Boar's Head distribution center is right around the corner if you crave animal meat. It is a nice bar although homogenized. It is a poor man's Now That's Class. read more

Seemed like a cool place and not just because i could get a vegan white Russian outside of my own house. It had a real laid-back vibe and apparently is very dog friendly since there were like 4 dogs hanging out inside. The HD Big Buck Hunter is pretty sweet. Not terribly vegan friendly game play, but we do enjoy that game and yes, i did lose yet another round to my wife...and not because she would be unhappy the rest of the night if i actually won. She's a sharpshooter. The barkeepers were average, if not a little slow to notice people in need of a drink. We made a special trip out on the subway from Chelsea just to go here because of their vegan-ness. All in all, we had a good time here. read more

This is a really great space, with excellent service and a fantastic event on Second Saturdays called the Vegan Shop Up. They open up the space to external vendors who sell all kinds of vegan foods. Wonderful idea. But, as a bar, I would give them one star. My $12 cocktail had absolutely no alcohol! I ordered the first frozen cocktail on the menu, the Prince of Bushwick, and it was like they forgot the rum. I got no buzz, and I am a very cheap date when it comes to alcohol. I sort of wanted not to like this place overly much. It didn't seem to quite have its finger on the pulse of the neighborhood, just a little to the right, slightly off. This bar wants to be all things to all people, like a Cool Dad in a college town who is trying slightly too hard. Vegan food? Televisions? Wide selection of craft beers? Specialty cocktails? Pickle shots? Big Buck Hunter? Art on the walls? Concert ticket stubs under glass on the bar? Wood interior? "Risque" bathroom decor? Dogs hanging out? And yes, the crowd erred on the side of dorky, at least for the neighborhood. But I was here on trivia night, which could skew demographics. I certainly contributed my share. You know what, though? I had a great time. I like good beers (although they should consider carrying at least one $3 can). Our team won the trivia (and a $40 bar tab) handily. The staff were all super-friendly and provided great service. Happy hour is a dollar off drafts, and $3 well drinks. read more

You'll notice that all businesses near the morgan L stop have inflated grades on yelp. There aren't many options in the neighborhood so mediocre restaurants and bars tend to get 4s and 5s. This place is the definition of "A-OK," it's a decent place to stop in to get a beer on weeknight if you live around the corner but it's in no way a "destination." It's small (well, more like super narrow and poorly laid out) and never very happening. The space is sterile and cold, the over done decor seems like an after thought. It's not cozy or super comfy so my visits there tend to be brief. $6 a beer and a dearth of specials is underwhelming considering it's Bushwick. The clientele is general dorky hipsters punctuated by the random 20 something booze hound from the other side of bushwick ave. Not really a place to meet people, I find folks chatty-er at Kings County. Staff is nice but no one interesting enough to remember. The sole reason I go here is the beer selection. While I would never call this place a beer bar I greatly appreciate that there are 16 beers on tap. At the end of the day the nightlife in this neighborhood revolves around loft/apartment parties. Just buy a couple 6 packs and head to friends place. If you want to go to a good bar you gotta get on the train and head to williamsburg proper or manhattan. read more

My favorite bar and I don't even drink. As a vegan, I felt obligated to check out this bar when I heard about it. Funny thing is, you wouldn't have a clue this place is vegan unless you asked. I mean, they have Big Buck Hunter HD next to the bathrooms! This place has one of the most fun and entertaining trivia nights I've ever been to. Do yourself a solid and come in on a Wednesday before 8:30pm. Karaoke is amazing, as well, on Thursdays. Sarah Booz is the best karaoke host. The most fun you'll have on a Thursday night (or last Saturday of the month). There's no cover for either Trivia or Karaoke. It's wonderful! Hungry? They have $4 warm vegan empanadas from V Spot :) They serve it with the familiar V Spot Salsa Fresca. Really excellent to have that for bar food. PROPS! I love the drink selection (Wild Thing FTW), I get hammered off three-four drinks, it's close enough to walk from my apartment (you know how rare that is in Bushwick) and EMPANADAS and PICKLE PLATE! Everyone saying it's too expensive, go back to your respective hometowns. This place is so decent for NYC. I love their vegan shop-ups as well. And Big Buck Hunter is a blast to play when you're drunk, and as a vegan pretty ironic. I can actually talk to my friends here and no one is overly douchey or annoying. Shitty tv is on. Hot jams. I wanted to like this place, and have been there several times, but I don't think I will go back. Pine Box has several features that seem like good ideas, but are just not well executed. The overall vibe is kind of generic and fratty. For instance, the place is big but somehow feels cramped. I think this has to do with the design and layout the encourages people to congregate at the narrowest point of the space. There is a big selection of craft/micro-brews on tap, but somehow they managed to avoid anything really exciting or good. For example, they lean heavily toward NYS produced beers, which is fine, but somehow fail to offer any of the better IPAs produced here. In terms of service, I have always found the bartenders to be friendly and attentive, but lacking in character. The music is anodyne, and there is usually either a movie or sports event on the TV screen. The best design touch is probably the bathroom wallpaper. It would be better if that kind of creativity could have been brought to the whole enterprise. If you want a somewhat generic bar, this place is fine, but it lacks character, urbane or otherwise. read more

The happy hour is until 8pm and even on the weekend! The have about 20 different beers on tap: American micro brews. I might come back for the karaoke. This review is only about Jeremy, the barback, and the fantastic experience my group of 15 and I had while at Pine Box last weekend. The place was packed, and the bartenders were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, but Jeremy was like the calm in the storm! My group and I really enjoyed watching him assist the bartenders with whatever they needed, and at several points in the night he made our drinks himself (some HIGHLY complicated orders included). Every drink he made came out delicious and totally worth the prices here. I have no idea how the manager hasn't made the guy a bartender yet instead of just barbacking... He kept a smile on his face and he quite honestly epitomized the term customer service. He kept the bar super clean even after we saw 2 different drunks spill some of their beverages. I will come here again and bring my friends just to see this guy work. The Dominican gentleman that checks ID's is also great. Very friendly guy! Also, pine box plays some great music and has a ton of vegan food vendors come the second Saturday of every month (come early before they run out of food). read more

Last night, my boyfriend threw his 30th birthday bash here and we had a really great time. The place is really easy to get to, right around the corner from the Morgan L stop. The bartenders (one is the owner) were SO nice and super accommodating. They allowed our ground to get happy hour bracelets so we could enjoy cheap drinks all night. Honestly, even without the bracelets, drinks are affordable and poured well. The beer list is great, with tons of draft choices from good US breweries. That's one of the reasons we picked this place, since my bf is a beer lover and refuses to drink crap beer. The place is spacious, with a lot of seating in the back. By the end of the night, our group had conquered all the seating area and we were just having a drunken good time. Bathrooms were clean, which is always important when you're downing a ton of $3 well drinks. The music was kick-ass. We made some recommendations for the party and they whole-heartedly accepted and played everything we were hoping for. Overall, it was a great time at a great venue. I came here on a Sat night @5p just about when the vegan pop up was packing up. The place was pretty busy (no seats available) but after all the food cleared out so did the people. My husband and I have never ordered a Bloody Mary, it just isn't our top choice. But since there's a whole menu of them here we felt compelled to try them and we're so glad we did! It's a cocktail and an appetizer all in one! I have no recollection of the ones we ordered but they were delicious and we ea had 2. They even have vegan bar food from VSpot which we really enjoyed. It wasn't as fresh but that didn't stop us from ordering empanadas and chips. We don't live in the area but if we did we'd certainly make this a regular place to frequent. read more

It's like my cool cousin who knows all the best bands and the best beers opened a bar! Imagine a bar where the bartenders will encourage you to expand your drinking repertoire and help you create a new signature drink. Where they say, "Hey, if you like this beer, you'll probably like this other locally brewed deliciousness...that we have on tap." Picture a bar where the music is at the just right volume, and the playlist is like a random shuffle of your own iPod (yeah, there's some Huey Lewis on my iPod, I'll admit it). Where the patrons are fun, but not wild--approachable, but not all up in your grill trying to start a debate with you, brosef. (No one here would ever use the term "Brosef" or "Bra") It's the place I'm coming when I need to go unwind after a hard day or when I want to meet up with friends in a place where I know we'll get great service and be able to hear each other talk. This is a large, chill bar with a limited food menu consisting of three types of vegan empanadas. If you want a good drink, a board game and maybe some difficult trivia, then Pine Box is a gem. The drinks are great (they even have vegan white russians!) and not terribly priced ($5 for a mixed drink); they also have a goodly variety of bottled and draft beers. On a whole, this is a cool bar. If they had more food options (how about nachos and chili cheese fries?) it would be even better and more on-par with the other vegan bars in the country like Bye and Bye in Portland and Highline in Seattle. read more

Pretty neat little bar with cool decor - bar is apparently crafted out of leftover coffin wood and decorated with old concert stubs. The bartender was pretty awesome. She offered up drink suggestions without being annoying, though we stuck to straight up whiskey, cause that's how I roll. And I believe but could be wrong since I don't drink beer and merely garnered this information by drunkenly spying on the people next to us was letting them have small samples of the beer before they committed to a whole glass. They did run out of Glenfiddich (like completely) 2.5 drinks in, which sucked. But then she gave me the half pour free, which is most of the basis of her awesomeness. I've only been twice so i may be jumping the gun, but when you know, you know right? i love their unique and original cocktails; my go to is the suffering bastard. they offer a small vegan menu consisting of a couple of different types of empanadas - i sampled all 3 options which were delicious and really hit the spot after a few drinks. in the back room they have comedy or karaoke depending on the day - karaoke here is a blast. dope diverse clientele as well. read more
