As someone who use to work for a vet years ago, I should have known better. I have no objection to them pre charging to make sure that the appt is kept, but that is where it stops. Brought our dog in with pain in his paw that he woke up with. They examined him away from us and took blood for a 4DX test which is questionably need for a soft tissue problem along with a CBC & superchem tests. I will say they explained the costs up front to my husband. Sent home with a comment of; "we can not confirm cause of limping without radiograph diagnosis "; and pain pills, but no shot for immediate relief. They did say we could get xrays at that time for another $200 plus. After watching our dog in pain, my husband got him to our vet ( who is an hour away),the next day. Our vet was in surgery the initial treatment day and had no way of getting him in. He was given a shot, pills to start in two weeks if he shows any limping at that time. Diagnosis: Soft tissue hyperextension in left wrist. Total charges $125. Total charges at Smithfield $363. with no basic diagnosis. He is no longer in pain after the 2nd day of treatment by our vet. They didn't call after the appointment after given multiple reminders too. My dog was suffering from seizures and they didn't take it seriously whatsoever and their receptionist is awful at speaking to people politely over the phone and in person. They have been going downhill recently. read more

Came here to get my 12 week old doberman's ears cropped by Dr.May and so happy I did. I stay in VA Beach so it was bit of a lengthy ride but well worth it. With the COVID-19 pandemic going on I had to check in at the window outside then wait in the car until someone came out to get Rolo (my dog). Each visit, even for postings Dr. May always came out to follow up and answer any questions. Everyone was nice and very professional. Would definitely recommend! read more

I lived in VA 5 years ago and moved south to retire. One of my cats had to have surgery to correct a urinary blockage issue (he's male). While I have wonderful vets south; none were willing to perform the surgery to help/fix Xavi's issue. I called Dr. Forgeng at Smithfield Animal Hospital to see if she was willing to take on just one more cat from me. When I originally had her as my primary vet while living in Hampton Roads I had 11 cats. She treated all of them for the 13 years I lived there. Xavi had his surgery and has been recovering at home here in NC. He is so much better already and I am so glad that she was willing to see us. I called and the scheduling was quick and easy. The emergency vets and my regular vets sent all of their notes up from his triage and issue so she could formulate a plan and they got us in right away. The staff was wonderful and very patient with this cat mama. They kept me updated and let me know how he was. TBH I called probably 50 times while he was in their care from Monday am when I dropped him off until Friday pm when I picked him up. I would HIGHLY recommend any of the docs at Smithfield Animal Hospital since they were very patient with me when Dr. Forgeng wasn't available to answer my 1001 questions about his procedure and after care. read more

The doctors and staff were so caring and really took the time to make sure we understood our prognosis. We we're able to get a same day appointment due to a cancellation and the staff was very accommodating and friendly when we arrived in somewhat of a panic. Our prognosis was not great but we were given various options on next steps and given the time to ask questions and make decisions without feeling rushed in a time of great emotional stress. The veterinarian went out of the way to make sure all potential causes of the urinary tract dysfunction were considered. I don't understand: 1. Our 5 y/o lab, Gracie recently required emergency surgery to remove an obstruction in her stomach and intestines. We understand it was a very complex procedure and I'm so grateful to Dr. May and the entire staff at SAH for being there in her time of need. The Vets are really good, deserving of five stars. But don't expect your time to be valued. I dropped off my Boston for neuter at 7:30 this morning. Waited in the lobby after check in for 10 minutes for someone to come up and get him. Finally, the young lady who had checked us in just took him back. Pick up is worse. You're given the time to arrive. Once you check in, you wait in the lobby for post op instructions (never my first rodeo). Then, you return to the lobby to wait again for your chart to be brought up to pay. Once you pay, you return to waiting in the lobby for someone to finally bring out your pet-today that was another 10 minutes. If you're light on tasks, your experience will be perfect. read more

We've been here twice with two different cats. Both times we were told flea infestation. We treat are cats for fleas and none of the others have any. The second cat obviously had tumors, you could feel them. They wanted to give blood transfusions, exrays and a battery of test that he may not survive. No mention of tumors. I will go to a different vet the next time. read more

Where do I start with this place, initially I was impressed with the business, the waiting area was clean with parakeets chirping. Then the ladies at the front desk were very nice; We were called back and I explain to the veterinarian that my eight-year-old dog had been vomiting quite a few times so The vet went through a series of questions asking me if the dog has been in contact with anything and I stated no I only give him a goat horn to chew because of his destructiveness with toys, (pittbulIy) give him chicken stock sometimes on top of his food and frosty paws when it's hot outside but that I've been doing it for a while (like 5 years) and he's never had these issues of vomiting until yesterday so I know it was not the chicken stock,frosty paw or wet dog food. Dr.May told me I was a fool for giving my dog this stuff. And continued to belittle me as a dog owner and stated it was foolish with a arrogance like no other. His mannerisms were not graceful and compassionate in fact they were far from it as he continued to state how foolish I was .So needless to say I will never go there again.its one thing to educate someone on what not to do but don't make them feel like they are a crappy person. I don't have a degree In veterinary medicine so how am I to know all that he knows ... DO NOT CROP YOUR DOG's EARS HERE!!! Had my puppy ears done here (unfortunately)..."Vet" claimed that he has been doing the job for 20 years on numerous patients and knows how it's done...yeah, now my puppy ears are of unequal length, one 1/4 inch longer than the other, shape is different from one another, since 2 months after surgery they won't stand up (we taped them as prescribed) because he cut them too long and my puppy breed requires a much shorter crop...Ofcourse we couldn't tell at first, cause of all bandages, stitches and tape covering everything. After us trying to address the issue and an OBVIOUS malpractice the "VET" became angry, rude and refused to discuss anything...he's been feeding us bullshit all this time like "ears need to heel first, they may take up to a year to stand up, there is a fold on one ear and that's why they appear uneven and so on"...NOW dog looks ugly and no other surgeon will agree to fix it because the dog is too old...GOT FUCKED HERE...CAN'T SHOW THE DOG LIKE I PLANNED THANKS SMITHFIELD!!! read more

The fine folks at this practice have cared for my GRANDDOG since her infancy. She suffered a traumatic eye injury yesterday. Dr. Betty Payne took her in during her lunch hour. Triaged, stabilized her and got her a SAME DAY appointment with the area's foremost Veterinary Opthalmologist. The one year old Lab isn't very happy. But, she is greatly improved. I have a Great Dane puppy. We made the decision to crop his ears and after searching through tons of experienced vets in Virginia we decided to let Dr. May perform the surgery. Is was sceptic of doing the surgery in the first place but I am more than pleased now with the outcome. The staff there is extremely professional and warming. We have had two rescue miniature schnauzers and have had them boarded and/or treated by several vet practices in the Tidewater area. Smithfield Animal Hospital has taken care of our little guys for many years now and we have always been very satisfied. I am a physician so I have a background in disease processes, surgery, lab tests, etc. The vets at SAH always make rational recommendations and give you the options. Our schnauzers have boarded there regularly when we travel, and they actually look forward to visiting there. You can tell they are well-treated and loved.
