So we have never been here before so I was a little tricky with the directions. The entrance to the campground is literally the entrance to Snow Summit. We thought it was a little odd but continued on and found out that it was very secluded. This campground does not have a shower but it has very clean bathrooms. The camp host Sean was super nice. He was always cleaning up around the campgrounds and making sure the bathroom was fully stocked. We had made a camp shower so that way we can rinse off at the end of the day. One downfall from this campsite is most of the campgrounds sites are sitting the lower hill or above the hill. I definitely love all the trees that was surrounding this campground. It made for some amazing pictures. We had a four-year-old toddler with us and he loved the hills because he can roll down his Tonka truck. Sean Sells fire wood if you forget it and it's much cheaper than any of the local stores so if you forget to grab some don't worry! If you were camping with little kids and get bored, you can definitely walk or take a little bike ride to snow summit and there's a couple activities there. There are shops there and even at Starbucks! We were campsite 29. We were directly across from the bathrooms. One thing I'm always afraid when I'm close to the bathroom is but foot traffic. But there was none that disturbed us.

We went up Labor Day weekend and stayed in Pine Knot campgrounds. I was a little hesitant because we usually stay at Serrano campgrounds but I actually fell in love with this spot. The bathrooms were very clean as well as the campsites. Each campsite felt very spacious and you weren't on top of one another. It was a nice surprise when Seann the camp host came by and did magic tricks. He even made us killer frog balloon. Four grown adults and we loved every second of his tricks. The only down fall is they don't have showers but won't stop us from going back. Happy Camping!

This review is toward recreation.gov and also the pineknot facility member who is in charge of reservations, not about the campground. (Currently the campsites i booked is CLOSED legally due to the obvious wildfires in California. It says the campsite is CLOSED on their website (pineknot campground at big bear) and on google information. They are refusing to give me back my full refund, saying that it would be considered a "cancellation" even though in their reservation and rules policy stated on the site CLEARLY states that a recreation.gov TEAM MEMBER or the CAMP FACILITY manager HAS TO give full refund in case of a emergency closure. I've called and contacted their online support multiple times, only to get a run around - BS - list of responses. Just wanted to give everyone the heads up that recreation.gov is extremely shady. Think about it, am I not going camping because I didn't want to? Or because the LAW and FIRE closed it down? And yet they are refusing to give me my refund. I have added all photos CLEARLY and LEGALLY stating on their website, of the case of a emergency closure that it should be a full refund. and the BS runaround that the recreation.gov help center is giving me.

Just ending our trip here for 4th of July week. It was a great campground near snow summit. Quiet area and pretty generous spaced campsites. Definitely a tight fit for trailers, the limit on the website said 26 trailer length limit. It was very quiet except the group camp sites next door who was blaring music until 2 am. We ended up calling the non emergency line. The restrooms are clean and kept clean multiple times a day. They do not offer showers so keep that in mind. Very close to town, yet offers a great Forest area to camp in. Good prices and would definitely be returning to this campground.

I love this campground. It reminds me of the campground of the Pacific North West where you have your own space, not cramped amongst your neighbour where you can hear them gossiping about an aunt or some in law. Back to this camp! We camped when kids went back to school and during the weekday. It was definitely quiet, had some college students about 3 camps over with their music blaring during the afternoon. Luckily it was our type of music! So no complaints there! They only stayed for a night and quieted after 10 that was also a plus. All in all it was very calming and just nice to be in specially in such chaotic world we're having. They're banning fire and we had a tin of citronella candle about 5" wide, which also served as a mosquito repellant. That was kind of our fire pit. The park ranger or caretaker drove by and didn't pay us no mind and it was nice as it sets up that camping mood. Oh, there are no showers! So if you're the type who wants to wake up spanking clean this may not be your campsite. The bathroom offers working flushable toilets and sinks with running water! We only spent 2 nights and it was enough for us as we were getting close to Friday. You can see that the town got busy fast and people coming in and as said we just wanted that calmness. Also watch out for big game. Our campsite was 2nd row from the back of the mountain. My bladder woke up around 1am. And sometimes no matter how brave you are when you're in an unknown place ask someone to accompany you to the loo. I woke up my spouse to come with me and off we went. The bathroom was probably about 150 yards or so. When walking I don't flash my light ahead I flash it around, it's a natural action for me as I've done backpacking in the PNW when we lived there. My spouse's light is always pointing forward. As we were coming back I noticed two glowing eyes within a the bush, at the foot of the mountain. When we got back in the tent the animals around us started making sounds and one distinct sound made us known that a cougar was close by. It was probably about 50 yards from us. It made this yeeping call, might sound cute but it's a familiar call I've heard too much before. Then silence. The next day before sunlight came and I walked around our camp where the sound came from looking for tracks and indeed it was a cougar. This for me a very cool experience. At end of it we loved this camp! We definitely will come back and bring our outdoor shower and just latch it on some tree!

This is my go to campground in Big Bear for tent camping. Lots of RV's there too, but double-check the length requirements for certain spots first. I was lucky enough to get one of my favorite end spots last minute due to someone else's cancellation. Most parking is flat, most spots have the tables, BBQ and fire-pit fairly close to where you park which is convenient. And the flat areas for tents (if you bring a tent) feel nice and secluded. The bathrooms and water are all pretty close to the sites too. It was really nice to see super clean bathrooms that are checked often. If they made them any cozier people would take too long in there lol. The camp hosts were awesome, they were patrolling the park almost non-stop, offering help and advice and answering questions. I came on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and I never heard a peep from the entire campground. I saw kids playing and having fun when I walked my dogs, but for whatever reason, that sound didn't travel far once I was back at my spot. We did have a coyote visitor on the last morning coming through our spot. My dogs (German Shepherds) saw him first and we just watched as he made his way back up into the hills. It's the mountains, wildlife is expected so it wasn't a surprise :) The campground is super easy to find if you come in off of Summit Blvd (go to the parking lot and turn left). Some of the spots actually back up to the lifts and runs, which my dogs loved.

This campground was great. Our site 33 had a small creek behind it that we could hear while sleeping. The wind and shade made our hot summer days seem cool. We were right next to Snow summit so we could hike all around. My one complaint is the camp host having a dog that barked at everything that went by all ours of the night. The camp host was also playing music and revving cars and talking loudly past 10 pm.

Just had a lovely stay at Pineknot campground. The facility was beautiful and covered in tall pines. Facility was well maintained and wood available for purchase. The groundskeeper Sean was WONDERFUl! Helped us get settled and gave suggestions for kids activities. He even put on a magic show for all the children!

Campground is nestled right in the city so you have access to lots of restaurants, shops and coffee stores. But if your looking for more solitude and quiet nights this isn't the place. Snow Summit is right next door. Make no mistake these campsites are very close together, you can and will hear everything your neighbors say! Not a lot of privacy, but there a few campsite without neighbors too close. We camped at 48, which was has no privacy and got very noisy at night. Bathrooms are decent and well maintained, but can get messy on weekends. Best sites for privacy are 47, 45, 33, and 19.

Camped out here with friends. Spot 40 is def the spot to get, secluded to yourself which is pretty neat noticing every other spot your pretty close to other people. The campground was clean when we got there. There's a food safe to keep food in from animals and a built in fire pit / bbq. The camp ground people were really nice and funny, def there if u need anything. Didn't go to the bathroom but from other reviews there are no showers. Bought fire wood from the camp ground people, $8 for a few log wads.

We stayed recently at campsite 20 and had more than enough space for our trailer and truck to fit without issue. Paved roads and well kept campground. The host drives around in the evening with extra firewood for purchase which was awesome. The bathrooms are clean and easy to access. We will be back.

Stayed here for Memorial Day weekend on site #16. I had booked it last minute so there were only 2 options of site 16 and 17. I didn't choose 17 because it was in the peripheral area of the campground. When I had arrived, I quickly realized I made the better choice. Site 16 had more trees and was more secluded from the "outside" world. The women's restroom had 2 flushing toilets and a sink (cold water only). There were a couple of times when there was a short line to use the restroom. It was always clean and stocked with toilet paper. Each site had bear resistant storage, picnic table, charcoal grill, and a fire pit. Site 16 had enough trees but I would've preferred if there had been more. The ground was not level so we had to shovel dirt around. Access to water was really close by. Parking was just enough for 2 cars, although I did see others with a small car + RV/camper parked in their space. The friendly hosts were on site and available for check-in as well as delivering firewood ($8 for a small bundle). The campground was literally next to snow summit so we were able to walk to the scenic sky lift and hike around the top of the mountain. It was a short, convenient drive to the lake and big bear village. Overall, we had a great time. Each campsite was spaced out far enough so there was more than enough privacy. My only complaint would be the few number of restrooms. Google maps provides directions that take you to the campgrounds in a roundabout way. I recommend following the directions on pine knot's website via summit drive and cutting through snow summit's parking lot.

Ask the Community - Pineknot Family Campground

How is cell coverage? I have Verizon.

It is better than other camps. I wouldnt say is good but you do get some reception.

What are the bathrooms like? Are there outlets?

Bathrooms are decent. 2 stalls each. Stocked well with toilet paper. Sink with running water but no soap. Bathrooms are well dispersed around the property so they’re close to the tent sites and usually no lines. Recommend bringing soap and also wet… Read more

Can we bring a 27 foot travel trailer? Or is it tent only?

It is best for tenting. However, the Recreation.Gov website (where you make reservations) specifies "RV Length: Limited turnaround space restricts RVs longer than 25 feet."

    Do they have showers available?

No showers. Only toilets and sink.

    Does it got wifi?

Lol no, the campground does not have wifi. Time to unplug!

Can you use a 19' tent trailer at this campground?

    Yes

I meant to post a review of this charming family campground earlier. We had been planning a camping…read moretrip over Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles National Forest, but then we realized there would be a heat wave leading to 100 plus degree weather. Our planned trip was a no-go. Our eight year old son was very disappointed. We brainstormed Big Bear as a place to go, as it would be a relatively balmy 85 degrees. Only problem was, I couldn't find any openings at any of the Big Bear campgrounds for the busy Labor Day weekend. I looked and looked, and finally found Camp Tanda. Before Covid, it was a Christian camp that only catered to large groups and kids' camps. During these times, they adapted for small families. I was happy to find they had one opening left for the holiday weekend. Our trip was saved. Our son was excited. The campground is lovely and clean with lots of trees. It's been around for seventy years, so the cabins have a rustic, vintage feel. We tent camped in a lovely spot near the kitchen building. Everything was very clean. There are restroom facilities, potable water, and hot showers available. There is also a basketball court, volleyball net, ping pong tables, and horse shoe game. The price is very affordable. The lady running the camp was very kind, bending over backwards to make sure we had all we needed. She provided a shade tent at no extra charge, and gave us a s'mores kit our first night there! Things to be aware of: This was and still is a Christian camp. No alcohol, drugs, or weapons of any kind are allowed. Very strict no noise between 10pm and 8am rule, which suited us fine. The camp is located very close to Big Bear Lake, which meant we could hear Air BnB partiers nearby. It's not fancy. Everything is quite old, but it all works fine. We stayed in tents, but they do have cabins available. Bring warm clothes for nighttime. Not everyone wears masks, but even at full capacity, it was never crowded. Easy to social distance. No campfires allowed, but there is a legal gas campfire from 7-10 pm. If you have a family who likes to camp, this is the place for you. Call or e-mail them for a reservation!

It accommodates up to 40 people and 8 vehicles. Access is via dirt road, which we still managed to access in a BMW sedan (drive really slow and watch out for ditches). Amenities include 5 picnic tables, 1 double pedestal grill, 1 group fire ring and vault toilets (it wasn't too bad...even had toilet paper!). Drinking water is available (one spigot). I didn't know these types of campgrounds existed! Your group is the ONLY group on this campsite. Hence, these campgrounds book fast. They are pricier than your typical campgrounds at $120 a night. It is near Pineknot campgrounds, so we did see people occasionally exploring the forest. But, for the most part, we were pretty isolated. There was no sharing of the water spigots or vault toilets with any other group. We had a group of 20 people and it was perfect for us. Lots of places to set up a tent. Lots of shade...but I still recommend a canopy for during the day when hanging out near the campfire and picnic tables. I don't recall ever seeing the camp host. We had four dogs and they were pretty content on the site. There were mosquitoes, so bring your bug spray. There was no storage box for the food which seemed odd. But, we did try to store all the food at night in coolers, bags, or our cars. We had an open trash can which didn't even attract a furry critter during the night to our surprise. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here!

Recently came here with a large group for a few nights. Nice campground, reasonably clean. Large…read morefire pit. Only thing of note that happened: on our first morning at the site, a ranger stopped by to check up on us. He threatened us repeatedly, for several minutes, with a $10,000 fine because the fire pit was "half dry." Not hot or warm. Not unattended. Dry. With people in camp. We had poured gallons of water on it and stirred it repeatedly the night before. We turned our headlamps on and off to ensure that there were no remaining embers, and kept pouring water into the pit until it ran out of all four corners. I poked around the pit at 8am with my bare hands, hours before the inspection, and could find zero discernible hot spots. The ash was still thoroughly soaked at the time. Some of the ash apparently dried out before ~11 am, when he stopped by. Not at all surprising, given that the fire pit is on a slope. And we were threatened, at length, with a $10,000 fine. I still don't understand it. Hell, if we'd had a fire going when he showed up, it would have been "dry." Fires were permitted. Dry fire pits apparently weren't? Still confused. Forest fires are no joke, but the ranger here can be very unpleasant about it. If you plan to camp here, you need to go above and beyond the posted fire regulations to keep the ranger off your back. Soak the embers and pile ice onto the pit if you have it. That will keep the ash wet until late morning, when he makes his rounds. Other things to note: all but one or two tent sites were on a slope. The trash can mentioned in the 2014 review is gone: trash must be disposed of at dumpsters in the nearby Pine Knot campground. There are still no bear boxes, so food must be stored ~in vehicles. This seemed odd, since all of the individual sites at the Pine Knot campground had bear boxes. Everything else mentioned in that review (double pedestal grill, 5 tables, vault toilets) is still operational. No mosquitoes by September -- too cold.
