Hello, my old friend. I've been on a bit of a hiatus from Equinox (and instead becoming a Barry's devotee), though I'll never say no to a good chilled eucalyptus towel. We were staying nearby and my husband had a guest pass and it was either vegging out in the hotel room, eyeing the minibar, or moving my butt, so off I went. This Equinox is situated pretty close to the Insta-famous picture spot of the Brooklyn Bridge that all the movies and TV shows feature, so be prepared to wade through a camera-wielding crowd. The stairs to the check-in desk aren't bad at all. If you want a Stairmaster workout before your actual workout, try the stairs at the Seaport location in Boston. Brutal. Layout is pretty typical for an Equinox - I did appreciate the natural light facing the weights area. Perhaps in a nod to what the clientele are clamoring for, much of the space is devoted to weights/machines, with all the cardio equipment in a smaller cluster near the back. When we went in the afternoon on a weekday, the space, particularly the locker room, was completely deserted. There's also a smoothie/juice bar on the first floor. read more

Are you ready to start your workout with some stairs? Get ready. This location is all about walking up those stairs. The moment you walk in you walk a flight of stairs to the mezzanine floor where front desk will greet you. The second floor you have your weights, women's locker room, and main studio. Moving on now to the 3rd floor where you will find the men's locker room, the first sets of elliptical machines and treadmills. Finally, you made it to the 4th floor where you will find the Pilates area, some more treadmills, yoga studio, and cycling studio. The gym is well maintained and clean. You will find towels on every floor. The upkeep is well taken care of before and after classes. This location the layout is different compared to other Equinox locations. Might be med size, but has everything will separated. I like the main studio has a sense of privacy compared to other Equinox locations where the main studio is full exposure. The only thing I don't like is the yoga studio size. On most slow days the capacity is great, but on other days, depending on the instructor, yoga classes can get crowded. Can be a bit challenging when crowded to move around or extend yourself without bumping into the next yogi. You do have a few popular yoga instructors and their class can be crowded. The locker room you don't have much space if someone else is using the lockers. You have to wait in case someone is using the kicker next to yours. Service is good. Have no complaints. Very modest location and nice staff. read more

Love this location, for the equipment set up. What's embarrassing is having a trainer(irina) talk negatively/roll their eyes at other members of using equipment because they wanted to use it with their client. While the trainer looks great, it's sad that they would encourage another member(who imo could use an extra day in the gym) to treat another member that way. read more

As a plus sized woman, I was nervous to start my gym journey, and wow. This locations staff continuously goes above and beyond, from signing up and touring with Caroline, to personal training with Victoria- everyone checks in, everything is tailored to your personal needs and desires, and it is such a safe place. Not to even mention the entire place smells like eucalyptus, and is spotless. Nobodies fighting for machines or staring at eachother, it's all smiles and herbal scents! So happy to be apart of this place. read more

I come to this location when I'm in the area. Check in on the second floor. Lots of stairs. Same equipment as the usual equinox gyms. Steam room. Eucalyptus towels. Bring your own lock, as these lockers don't have the combo locks like other locations. read more

This is not a 5-star Equinox location but it is a decent gym. It could use a remodel. The staff are really nice, the facility is comfortable and the classes are great. The gym doesn't get as crowded as some Manhattan locations. I prefer the Dumbo location to this one because it feels more upscale, fresher and nicer locker room. But it's also a 20 min walk or a subway ride. The locker room here is a cramped, if you are changing and someone else is using a nearby locker both people won't fit. The shower situation is acceptable but there is similarly not enough space or privacy. In summary, this gym could use remodel. read more

I visited with a friend it was cool, I'm trying to decide if I want to join as a member but I think the city has more stuff to offer than this location, the vibe here is chill I wouldn't mind I just want to make sure I'm getting my monies worth so I think I may want to join the city location but I live in Brooklyn so I know that commute to the city will be hard, but I enjoyed this location I love the city location better read more

Aside from the input others have given here (it's really not up to par with Equinox pricing). I joined in 2019 and was given a tour, including the kids club and was told it would reopen as soon as the city allowed childcare to reopen. Several months later, when my kid hit the minimum age, i asked if it would reopen... "We are still assessing when". Now I get the answer of "we'll turn it into a social room instead". Up until last week the BkHeights webpage still listed the kids club as an amenity. I feel cheated, and many other parents too. We relied on the promise of a kids club to ensure we could make more flexible use of a $190 gym, but as it stands we can barely make it out. Equinox has been nothing but disingenuous and dismissive on the subject. Frankly, I don't think anyone wants to hangout in a backroom behind the reception either. read more

Up to par in general but... the locker room situation here is officially ridiculous and not acceptable. This still seems to be the only Equinox in NYC that has no keyless locks and no shelving, seating, or interior hooks in the showers that, additionally, are half the size of every other location I've been to. It's impossible to use the standard Equinox perks of shave cream and razors without bonking, cutting or contorting yourself, or to dry off without being half out of the stall. No wonder the corridor is always slippery. That's got to suck for staff. And no, handing out crappy loaner locks at the front desk is not a permanent solution for the locker problem. There have been complaints about this in comments for some time and nothing has been done. Frankly, it's starting to look like... well, let's say demographic bias. Downtown/South BK deserves the same quality as the UWS or Dumbo. When I signed up, I was told the pandemic had paused franchise expansion in BK. Ok, I get that. Expansion costs a lot. It's true. Rich people are just better looking. It's never more apparent than when you step foot into an Equinox. All those NYSC members are mole people by comparison. Anyway, I did a two day trial for all regular locations, and stopped by the Brooklyn Heights location for a pretty extensive workout. The place is big with winding floors. If you don't like stairs, tough luck. I was told that they designed it to resemble a brownstone, but that's just marketing mumbo jumbo. On the top floor, I did some free weight and cable machine work. They only have two Olympic flat bench stations, which is too few. There's a bunch of adjustable benches for dumbbell workouts though. However, the main reason I would never join Equinox (aside from the ludicrous pricing) is that the dumbbells are horrible. They have this taper at either end of the handle that just digs into your palm. Or at least for me, it was incredibly uncomfortable. Granted, I was using 75lbs ones, but bad design anyway. I also went down a floor where they have the studio for classes. A LOT of women were walking back and forth from the locker room to the studio in bare feet. Ugh. The second floor was also crowded with trainers taking up space because they don't actually have an open training area. Other complaints - they only have kettlebells on one floor, and they have no TRX. The good things - they have two powerlifting platforms for your deadlifts and the like. And also, when I first went to the locker room, one of the urinals was out of order. And by the time my workout was done, it was fixed. At NYSC down the block, that would've taken at least a month. Oh, and of course, you get all the classic Equinox amenities that they make fun of on Broad City. Overall, it's a nice gym, but for the price, it should really be perfect. read more

This gym is overpriced. Here are the prices I was quoted as of June 2, 2023: Equinox Brooklyn Heights (this location only): $227/mo. with $100 initiation fee Chelsea Piers Downtown Brooklyn (this location only): $220/mo. no initiation fee Chelsea Piers Prospect Heights (this location only): $200/mo. no initiation (this is the founders' price, since this club doesn't open until June 5) I can't see how anyone would join this Equinox at this price, considering Chelsea Piers Downtown is nearby, far larger, newer, has a better floor set up, has more windows and has a pool. I say this as someone who was a member at Equinox for many years. Equinox is no longer the only luxury gym in the area. There's also a Life Time gym opening in 2024 in downtown Brooklyn. Equinox needs to adapt to this new reality. They need to either lower the price or somehow upgrade the facility. As it stands, there's no way this is a $227/mo. gym. read more

Beware of your safety at Equinox. While I was in the middle of a cardio workout, an internal chain in the machine I was using snapped. I was sent flying off the machine and injured myself. Equinox treated me like a liability and did little to convince me I could trust them or their equipment, so I chose to terminate my membership. I've been a member at 2 other major NYC gym chains and trialed at many more, and the Brooklyn Heights Equinox is, for me at least, my favorite. I think a lot of the reviews here are missing perspective on what it's like at other NYC gyms / other Equinox locations. Everyone has different values and priorities, but for me, this is why the "Equinox premium" is worth it: 1. The staff. Not only are they friendly, but they actually care about keeping the gym floor clean and organized. Likewise, the locker room is clean and always stocked with towels and other amenities, and staff are always around to help prevent inappropriate behavior (all of which were big problems at the other gyms I've been a member at). 2. The classes. The instructors are friendly and welcoming to newcomers while also ramping up the intensity for the more experienced folk, and the variety of classes is pretty amazing given the relatively small space. The fact that classes are included and cancellation is flexible has made me much more likely to actually sign up and try new things. I also haven't had any issues with availability and am often able to sign up at the last minute. 3. Personal training. I've been working out with David and seeing serious results in terms of weight loss and muscle gain, and he also provides coaching on nutrition and supplements. I can't say for sure about other trainers, but if they're half as good as David, you'll be in good hands. Does it get crowded at peak hours? Yes, like every other gym in the city (if you know a gym that's never crowded, it's either in the middle of nowhere or there's something seriously wrong). It's also significantly less crowded than other Equinox locations I've been to. Is the equipment the newest? Not always, but everything is in good condition, and unlike other gyms, if something breaks, you're likely to see it fixed the next time you visit. And to the people complaining about locks: seriously? I guess if you constantly hop between Equinox locations, this might be annoying, though you can always just ask the front desk to borrow one. If like 99% of people you plan on working out primarily at one location, then just bring your own lock (I've personally had nothing but issues with electronic locks and and consider their absence a plus). read more

I have been trying to get my cancellation request through for 4 months (with proof and a documented long email trail). I'm still on the phone as of now. Go for a run outside, sign up for Classpass. Ride your Citi Bike. Don't sign up for Equinox, or you'll be paying for the membership for the rest of your life, or maybe longer. read more

I appreciate the staff here immensely, but working out here is becoming impossible unless you're able to go at obscure hours like 8 a.m. or 4 p.m. on a Saturday. I've been a member for 7 years. You used to be able to show-up and take class - first come first served. Over a year ago they instated an app and now you're required to make a reservation - typically a day before (otherwise you aren't getting in) - if you want to take a class. Getting into a class is now harder than waiting for the clock to turn 9 a.m. to buy U2 tickets off of Ticketmaster. I actually get U2 tickets - I RARELY get into an Equinox class. I have alarms set and login to the app at 8:59 - press "book" as soon as it appears - and STILL can't get into class - it goes from slots available to a full waiting list that fast! You will not be able to get into a Saturday OR Sunday morning class unless somehow the angels are on your side and it's your magical day. If you want to take a class - you'll have to live your life around Equinox and the times that class is least desirable. AND should you have an emergency and need to cancel, or accidentally oversleep -- well the strikes start adding up. You have to cancel 3 or more hours before class - otherwise you get a strike and 3 strikes and you can't make class reservations for months. At least when there was an hour cancellation - you stood a chance of getting in because people would cancel in time to go. They put this system in place because people were complaining that they don't come take class because whenever they get to the gym - class is full. I NEVER had a problem getting into a class before this system. And I'm always the last person to class because I drive from neighborhoods away and parking is completely unpredictable. All these other people have to do is walk a few blocks. NO ONE is happy with this system!!!! In fact Equinox, you're pissing-off your long-term members - most of your members join for a year or two and then move and leave the damn gym. I cannot fathom why this gym could care less about its longstanding members - especially considering that I hear membership has DROPPED. I take class pretty much every Saturday and Sunday morning and since this nonsense has started it has become an ENORMOUS stressor (the opposite of what we go to the gym for), and since the 3 hour cancel policy started -- I can NEVER get a weekend morning class. It is UTTER nonsense! All of the longstanding members I know have LEFT. Go back to being a gym equinox. You aren't class pass! Let people come to the gym when they can make it - not make your thousands of member synchronize to a few people's schedules. If you can't get into class when it's first come first served that should be YOUR problem! It was never a problem before. If I wanted to deal with reservations I would just do class pass where I can choose whatever I want whenever I want because small gyms don't have this problem! Equinox officially sucks. read more

I've been a member at multiple equinox locations and this one has served me well over the past 3 years. The front desk staff is super friendly, there's plenty of classes, the gym is clean and well maintained and there's usually enough equipment/machines available. Yes it's expensive (it's equinox) and yes it gets really crowded during peak hours, but I think that's essentially to be expected. My specific gripes would be 1) it's a little small and 2) during the running classes, it is honestly impossible to get a treadmill and 3) there are 2 SoulCycle bikes, and one of them always seems to be broken. read more

I think this location would really benefit from some renovations (to the facilities and the machines). By far, the worst Equinox in NYC. I have all access and avoid this location at all costs (even though it is the closest location to my apartment). It is dirty, outdated, and cramped. This is the second to last shower rank in my Equinox review series! I've been visiting every NYC location, rating the gym and ranking the showers. It's all about to come to an end. Oh, Brooklyn Heights...I was really rooting for Brooklyn after Williamsburg and Dumbo maintained spots in the top 10. Maybe it was an off day at this spot, but it was mega dirty when I visited. Like, clumps of hair on the floor and it hadn't been swept in the locker room so little bits of *things* and hair stuck to the bottom of my feet when I was barefoot (other locations are usually pristine!). Potential members, beware: If you reach this Equinox by phone and an employee says "come on by to try out the gym whenever you want"....the gym won't honor that...unless the SAME PERSON is working at the counter when you show up for the trial. While it is smaller than most Equinox gyms we knew that going in and I have always felt like the gym is spotless, classes are great, and the staff is friendly. I joined Equinox after gyms were allowed to reopen in NYC. I knew they were known for the cleanliness, but they really stepped up their game in order to make the environment compliant with COVID guidelines. The bathrooms and gym floor are constantly being cleaned and sanitized by the staff, which is pretty cool. The people who work at the front desk are super nice, as well as the salespeople at the shop. The only thing about this location that is annoying is that the gym equipment is spread out in 3 different floors, as some reviews have mentioned. To be quite honest, the way the machines are put into the rooms makes no sense - aka leg equipment on both 2nd and 3rd floors - but I understand that right now they are trying to maintain distancing between machines due to COVID, so I'll give them the benefit of doubt. I also find that there are some machines that are barely used and could be replaced by more useful things - for example, this location doesn't have a seated leg curl machine. Most machines are good but that could definitely be improved. There are so many options for cardio that the weight room feels a bit neglected. I like this location because it hasn't been packed, so I find that my workouts are more enjoyable. Overall super nice location, just taking off a star because of the layout and the fact that I'd like to see some more good machines. read more

Been back at the grind for the past 6 weeks and chose this location as my Equinox to work out at and I am really blown away by the upkeep of the gym and service that the staff provides. I was concerned originally because of the comments that the gym was always too busy and packed and just a nightmare to workout at because of it. Those concerns were put to rest as I was told that since the DUMBO and Williamsburg locations have opened it has become a lot more manageable. I would agree whole heartedly! My only beef with the place and it isn't their own fault is the general lack of manners by some folks that work out here. Now don't get me wrong it is much worse at other gyms, but still for the price you pay for here you would hope that the people that worked out here would have a bit more respect. It really bothers me that not everyone doesn't re-rack their weights, wipe down their machines, throw their dirty towels in the bin, clean up after themselves in the shower. Don't let that be a discouragement but more just an observation. There are only a handful of people like that here rather than the dozens upon dozens at every other gym you will ever go to. read more

This location has facilities that are more on par with a NYSC. Horrible air ventilation.

They have oversold the memberships and it's now far too crowded for this relatively small Equinox. Forget visiting between 5 and 8pm. And the clientele lately includes an increased number of grunting, construction-boot-wearing steroid types. Partly as a result, some of the trainers are rude about claiming the limited number of machines for their clients. If you don't pay for a trainer, you're treated as a second class citizen. Want to work out later? They are really aggressive about closing down the club. They often start breaking down and cleaning the showers over an hour before it's supposed to close. On a brighter note, it's among the cleanest clubs anywhere, many of the classes are excellent and the front desk staff is always a pleasure to deal with. read more

This gym is not worth its $190 monthly fee. It's not really clear what you're paying so much money for, given the following: - Locker rooms get extremely crowded during peak times, e.g. after work and weekend mornings. You are constantly in someone else's way and everyone has to play an awkward game of naked-body Tetris to fit into the small space. - Bathrooms get dirty and smelly. I never shower there because things get pretty gross with everyone's hair and trash and whatnot on the ground. - There are no locks on the lockers, and they always run out of locks to lend at the front desk. (Feels petty to say this, but when you're paying so much money, you'd expect them to think of this.) - Too few classes, and they get booked up extremely quickly. For Saturday morning classes in particular, you have to book the SECOND that booking opens, otherwise you're not getting a spot. If you can't be on the app exactly 26 hours before the start time when booking opens, you're SOL. (And even if you are online, you're not guaranteed to get a spot since there are 50 other people trying to do the same thing.) - Membership advisors will do anything to get you to sign into a one year contract, then ghost once you're locked in. I needed help with getting a receipt after paying and got radio silence every time. - Front desk is kind of unfriendly and snooty. I feel bad for them sometimes because there are some weirdly entitled rich clients who can be real asses to them, but they don't exactly treat the normal clients nicely either. It's not a terrible gym by any means, and I really like the instructors, but it's grossly overpriced for what it offers. It does not feel like a "luxury" gym in any way, except maybe for the eucalyptus towels (admittedly amazing) and the preponderance of Canada Goose jackets. I'm only a member because my company pays the fee, but I'd never spend my own money on this. There are just too many members for such a small, unimpressive space, and they don't do anything to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers, like schedule more classes or increase the frequency of cleaning. read more

When I first heard about an Equinox opening up in Brooklyn, I got really excited. It's the cleanest and most accessible gym I've worked out at thus far in my life. Introduce me to David Kirsch's gym and I might change my mind though... After stints at being a member with the NY Sports Club and the YWCA, I joined the Equinox before it even opened and scored a major discount on membership (and no initiation fee). They must have hired a feng shui-schooled designer because I've always experienced an overall feeling of zen being in their gyms. A large steam room, top notch equipment, and plenty of towels only add to the pleasure of exercising there. And while it is a bit more pricey than it's neighborhood competitors, Equinox accomplishes something that these other gyms do not: It makes me want to come back and work out again. They've phoned me and I actually answered and Begged for them to get my email address out of their database but it seems like they keep sharing it and giving it to more Equinox Spammers. I can't believe someone said the trainers aren't friendly! I am a shy person who puts 0 effort into meeting people at the gym and I know many trainers because they're just so friendly. Both girl and guy trainers have complimented me or just wave hello from recognizing me. I trained with Paul. He's great, I very highly recommend him. Sometimes it gets busy at like 7-8 am but I've never had a problem with waiting long for equipment or finding space. The cleanliness and locker room/showers are great too. I was hesitant to join because the planet fitness down the street is $10/mo. but so glad I did, I love it and workout more often because of it. So worth it. read more

I was very excited to join Equinox about a year ago. It's all the things you'd expect for $160 a month! The latest machines (and plenty of them), a kind staff, lots of space, great classes (I take the Yoga classes and love them) and clean facilities. All that is great. I'm giving 2 stars for the following reasons: Too many trainers loitering: When I work out, there are just loads of trainers walking around with and without clients. They have an intimidating presence and feel as though they own the gym. Also, when you join the gym they are a bit aggressive with emails, trying to get your business. Too many cleaners: I love a clean gym, but maybe clean up before and after operating hours. Everywhere you go, someone with a back-pack vacuum is in your face. I might be the only one stretching in the Yoga room - but for $160 a month I was hoping that 10 minutes of meditation wouldn't be partnered with jet pack cleaning... Physical Fitness: Equinox has spent loads of money on their branding, it's slick and sexy. So why when I'm working out (trying to look slick and sexy) can I see right into a physical fitness practice? I feel for these people, struggling to get better, trying hard to get back into their top physical shape from an accident or an illness - but I really wasn't ready for this to be part of my positive work out experience. Hey Equinox, FROSTED GLASS on the One on One window please!!! NOT SEXY. I'm going to continue to work out at Equinox, but they are on probation. I usually yelp when I've received really poor service or had issues with facilities and neither is the case for BK Equinox. The front staff is always really friendly in addition to the sales, shop and trainers. It's also very clean and probably more so than the other EQ's. Been to the other Equinox's and this pales in comparison simply due to lack of space. The facilities are just about the same....it just feels very compressed from 5-8/9pm. All in all I'll probably cancel soon. As a guy that doesn't like machines or classes this place misses the mark. Firstly, very few mirrors here go to the ground and too few mirrors to see oneself. It's not vanity but necessity to see oneself and gauge form during exercises. Most mirrors it's difficult to see one's lower body or just not at all. I like to do dips and it's necessary to use proper form. Unfortunately there's no way to assess this without taking a video of yourself. Also gauging the position of any floor exercises done (pushups, etc) requires finding a mirror that goes to the floor....of which there are two...three if you're ok being tread upon. Second, no standard (straight) bar for chinups/pulls???? There's plenty of exercises that use a straight bar: pull overs, front dips, muscle ups, front/back lever, That's absurd....there are at least 4-5 stations for this and not one straight bar with a standard grip width. Was someone high when designing this? Third, TRX is strapped to a wall so you can't go under. No rings available and there's plenty you can do on rings (takes up much less space than a bs eliptical) Lastly, I'll probably switch to a cross fit gym. I'll be missing the fancy towels but no longer the necessities in a workout. I don't have an issues with the price though. I am disappointed that I am unable to sign up for and attend classes because of overbooking. If I could book the classes a week in advance, I would, but you are not permitted to. You can only sign up the day before and it fills up so quickly! With all the money you spend at a place like this there should be a better system or they shouldn't overbook. By yesterday afternoon, every single Saturday class was full and most of them, even the waitlist was full. Half the reason I signed up for this gym is because of the classes and I keep getting locked out of my favorite ones! Open the sign up a week before! why not? if you are worried about cancellations you could have people confirm. I don't think I will be renewing because of this. I like the barre classes, yoga and spin. If I signed up for monthly yoga works classes, soul cycle AND purebarre (all in the area) it'd still be cheaper than my monthly. I actually like the Equinox facility and staff a lot but if I can't go to my classes it's not worth it. It's a shame read more
