They do not have adequate staffing (2 caregivers per 35 residents "who need care") and relied regularly on agency caregivers (who didn't seem to have adequate training in caring for residents with dementia) even before COVID. It seemed like my parent's care plan was not being followed and I imagine it was because there were not enough staff members to do so. Some staff are wonderful and really care about the residents but others are mediocre at best. If your loved one has dementia, even if it is mild, look for a place with maximum 6 residents per caregiver that conduct dementia-specific training of their caregivers and do not regularly rely on agency caregivers.

My father went to the hospital ER after becoming weak and having a seizure like experience. At 95, he had just become very weak and non-ambulatory. The hospital tests had shown that he needed attention that he could no longer receive at home with caregivers. He was transferred to Alamitos West. We found Alamitos West to exceed our expectations. The facility is kept clean and the staff is friendly, professional and very helpful. They treat dad with respect, monitor him for his medications and try to keep him comfortable. The nurses, assistants, and PT all have a hard job, but they have all been so kind and helpful. Communication about Dad's condition has been good during our visits and the team keeps us informed about his vitals, when meds are being administered and any new medications. The social workers and business office team were extremely valuable at answering our questions about insurance, discharge process, finances and options. They were all so helpful and genuinely caring as Dad was transferred from short term care to long term care. They definitely made the transition much less stressful and clear. Taking care of elder parents can be extremely stressful. We found Alamitos West to provide the much needed assistance we needed for Dad.

Gross neglect. My father went there to recover instead this place set in to motion a sequence of…read moreevents that directly led to his suffering and eventual death. Dad was there 9 days. In that time, he developed symptoms of a UTI. I immediately notified staff and asked for an analysis. "Okay, I'll put the order in". Day 2, do you have the results? "OH, I will put another order in". PLEASE put dad on a broad spectrum antibiotic. "Oh, we cant do that until weve cultured it and that take s between 2-5 days. What?!?! Day 3, hey, what are the results? "Ummm, I will put in another order'. I stood there and they said, is there anything else? I said YES! Lets get that sample NOW! Day 4, so, what are the results? Oh, we'll, the lab lost it? Take another sample right now! They did and it was ketchup red! Day 5, they call me saying no UTI but he has pneumonia. Oh, and we are transporting him to the hospital ER. Dads gets to the ER with a BP of 63/48 and is severely dehydrated. Additionally, he has a massive UTI. Oh, and no pneumonia! A few days later, the hospital tells me that dad has an ecoli infection in his kidneys! Pretty sure the only way ecoli can be introduced to the urinary tract is by a dirty catheter. My dad passed away because of the direct and gross negligence of this place. 20 years ago my grandmother was here and we pulled her out because they were terrible back then. 7 years ago, my Aunt was there (COVID) but was transferred to Seal Beach Rehab which is no better. FYI ~ paramedic told me Al West is terrible. Dont allow your loved ones to go here. We tried to avoid this place like the plague but dad gave permission. Worst decision of his life EVER!
