I don't know why I never heard of Piola, but I'm so glad I did. We got pizzas for lunch for a coworker's birthday. Normally, I'd be left out with pizza because I cannot eat dairy or eggs. Piola has a cauliflower crust option as well as vegan cheese. You have to pay $9 total for both of those, so it's an expensive pizza, but it was one of the best dairy free pizzas I've ever had. I got the Como. A coworker got the Como without modifications and loved his too. The size of pizza is perfect... ate the whole thing in one sitting which is uncharacteristic of me! Not a bad place to stop by for dinner prior to hitting the bars in midtown/downtown. I came here with a bunch of friends on a Saturday night and seating wasn't an issue unlike its neighbor, Jinya Ramen which would always have people waiting, so that was a plus. Having to wait when you're already uber hungry is never cool! The ambiance at Piola is completely the opposite of Jinya. It's bright and it's much quieter. The restaurant wasn't too packed either. Like I stated earlier, there was no problem getting a table for our party of ten. As a group, we all ordered different drinks and dishes: pizzas, appetizers, etc; and every single one of them came out good. Our waiter was also pretty attentive even though he was the lone person waiting on us. Definitely wouldn't mind coming back here for dinner or making this place a pit stop before a night out. The service was immaculate, our server was very friendly and attentive. Simple Italian fare that was very delectable. Immediately, within my first bite I knew this place took pride in their food. Handcrafted pasta followed up with a unique meat sauce. We got the Bolognese. All the aroma with a hint of basil really gave it a very attractive yet appealing taste. The place features Venetian style super thin crust pizzas, all tasty and very enjoyable. Must try was the Copenhagen - a white pizza (alfredo sauce base) with brie cheese and dotted with smoke salmon, very unique. Gnocchi is homemade daily and it was soft and pillowy smothered in a four cheese sauce. Also loved the eggplant parm and arugula Salad with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, pistachios and pomegranate dressing. Yum!! The pizzas here are really good, you can even get some unique flavors like the Odessa which has no tomato sauce and is topped with prosciutto . Be sure to ask for the spicy oil to dip the crust in! So good! The only down side is that the prices are pretty expensive (more than $15 for most pizzas). But they have a pretty good happy hour with $5 personal pizzas in either plain, pepperoni, or veggie (my personal favorite). I would also recommend the Verde and co salad, the dressing is delicious and it is packed with fresh veggies! Don't skip dessert! The profiteroles are awesome! They make a really good aperol spritz and have a nice wine selection with bottles half off on Wednesdays! The staff are also super nice and friendly! read more

What are they putting in their pizza? It's so good. I usually get the Piola or the Margherita pizza And I'm obsessed with it. The crust is very thin and light, the sauce is perfectly balanced and not overbearing, and the cheese is addictive. I'm not sure what brings out the specific flavor that is in these pizzas but it's so airy and light. I thought it was just me, so I got these pizzas for my whole team at work and everyone said the same thing. I had people from other teams trying to sneak into my team room to have another slice, and it's not just because it's pizza. The downside of it being so light is that one pizza is definitely not enough for two hungry people, you'd probably want something extra on the side. I've tried the gnocchi which is fairly good but not magical in the way the pizza is. All in all I definitely recommend trying to place. FYI- I've only interacted with this restaurant Through DoorDash, so I can't comment on the in person experience. However, I've probably ordered over 20 times in the last three months since I discovered it. read more

I came on Gnocchi Night and was excited to try so many flavors. It was unfortunately a disappointment. The gnocchi was slightly undercooked (perhaps? It was mushier than it should've been), but ultimately, it was all really quite bland. The sauces had little flavor and the gnocchi was only a carrier of the mediocre sauce. I genuinely wish I had tried the pizza because it looked far better. I ate perhaps 15 pieces of gnocchi before realizing every flavor would end up being as flavor less as the four I had tried. At $19, this was a massive waste of my money. Another important feature of Gnocchi Night is that it isn't made to order. You have to wait for a bowl to come around with gnocchi in it and they ask if you want it or not. This is extremely slow, as I had 4 flavors over 40 minutes. There were flavors I had originally hoped to try, but grew impatient to try the whole menu of them. I ended the night with the cannoli. It was good! It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was a good one. Service was good, it's nice that the pasta was homemade, just flavorless, and overly priced considering all of the situation. I wish management had spoken to me about the gnocchi. I hate that I paid so much for so little in the end. Perhaps I'll return to try the pizza one day. We'll see. read more

It's been a couple years since I came back to Piola in Houston! Parking has been worse to find, but overall food and service hasn't changed a lot. We came here as a back up plan to Gen Korean BBQ since it was getting late and we were starving. No wait line for a Friday night and we were seated immediately. The menus looked the same, offering similar options as before. My go to use to be the carbonara pizza so I had to get it while I was in town. Along with the pizza, I ordered the burrata and Prosciutto while my husband ordered the chicken parmesan. Burrata and Prosciutto is a good choice with portion, quality, and taste! They actually load it up with prosciutto and a decent 5 oz of burrata. The carbonara pizza looked a lot different from what it did before. No egg broken on top, and I didn't really see it mixed in the pizza as well. The bacon was minced and the dough was thicker than it use to be. They may have changed chefs. Also, the chili hot oil is now colorless, which is really deceiving, but cool. I would go back if I'm in the area. read more

I would definitely recommend coming here on the 29th day of any month! That's lucky gnocchi day so they have bottomless gnocchi for $18. Every few minutes they bring out a pot of gnocchi with one of the various sauces on it and you can choose whether you want a scoop or not (or you can ask for extra). I'd also say it's good to try everything that looks yummy and then just eat a bit of it instead of the whole thing so you can save room to try all the sauces. You can take anything you don't eat home in a to-go container. The gnocchi itself is super pillowy and delicious (infinitely better than store-bought gnocchi). My friend has been here a bunch and said that if a certain pasta dish doesn't have the type of pasta you want you can ask for a swap (for example, if you wanted gnocchi cividale but they only had penne cividale on the menu, you can ask for gnocchi covidale and they'll make it for you). read more

We came here to have a cocktail while we were on the waiting list to have dinner at another restaurant close by. Luis our bartender was wonderful. Answered all our questions about the appetizers on the menu. We chose the Prosciutto & Co with the Burratta cheese. It was very very good and also refreshing on the 100 degree Texas day we were having. We ended up calling the other restaurant and taking our names off the waiting list and ordering pizzas and pasta right at the bar with Luis. Loved the thin cracker like crust on the pizzas! My husband ordered the pappardelle pasta with mushrooms and shrimp. (I apologize I didn't get the picture of it) He said it was the best pappardelle pasta plate he's ever had. Oh Piola, how I love thee! I don't know why it took me so long to check this place out, I have heard great things from friends about how delicious the food is here. They weren't kidding! I hate myself just a little for not coming here sooner. Located in Midtown, this is the only Piola in all of Texas. The design of the restaurant is pretty fun. I love how colorful the restaurant is, very cheery, you can't be mad inside here. As soon as you walk in, the bar is on your right. If you sit at the bar during happy hour, they offer complimentary appetizers/finger foods while you sip that yummy cocktail. They do have an outdoor patio, the lighting outside is not as bright as the inside but that will do just fine for me. The past few times I have order the same dish, which was the Brooklyn pizza. The Brooklyn consists of: -Shredded Chicken breast topping (fresh) -Gorgonzola Cheese -Broccoli I like to add the Spicy Sausage (Pepperoni) as an extra also. I think most of their pizzas are thin crust, I wasn't really given an option. But one thing that is an option which I think is SUPER COOL is the fact that you can choose to have a whole wheat crust instead -- just to let you know it's $1.50 extra if you want the whole wheat. I'm trying to be a little healthier, so I went with the whole wheat. I didn't regret it. It was yummy! The food is great, the drinks were good, the service was awesome. I'm a regular here now! My only complain is the space, it's not the biggest restaurant, expect to get to know your neighbors elbows -- because they will be touching. LOL Oh, wait! Almost forgot! I've been to Piola four times over the last 2 months if that says anything about how much I like this place. It has an airy, friendly vibe and extremely colorful decor as my photos show. However, the main reason I keep coming back is the food. Piola's "Miami Beach Pizza" (topped with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and arugula) is the star attraction for my husband and me. All of their pizzas are handmade and cooked in a wood fired oven. There is not the slightest bit of oiliness or grease on the bottom of the pizza which makes for a crispy, papery crust that I happen to like. I also love their pastas. My current favorite is Piola's Meat Stuffed Ravioli which is slathered in an alfredo-type sauce that is seriously delicious and worth every single calorie. We ended up speaking with one of the owners, Michel, during a recent dinner and he said that their ravioli sheets are handmade by a local Italian lady. Given the perfect taste and texture, I am not surprised. I'm also partial to Piola's gnocchi in cheese sauce as well as their hot polenta appetizer which is served in a ramekin with 2 circles of polenta sandwiching a layer of mouthwateringly good homemade bolognese sauce. As if this wasn't plenty of food, we've also tried their tiramisu and hot fudge brownie with ice cream. I'm not a huge tiramisu fan but Piola's was pretty tasty. However, I can unequivocally say that Piola's hot fudge brownie dish was excellent in every way. It is so colorful. It looks like a box of Crayons (the big boy 128 crayon box, not the little kid box) was set on the floor and zapped with Avada Kedavra, splattering "cherry pie" (Cf. 3000 Miles to Graceland) all over the walls. This place basically takes the gangster flashiness of Guadalajara del Centro's colorful design touches and kicks it up a notch - BOOM! So it is a nice place/fun place; not too serious/formal; and not too adult. See the photos so you know what you are getting into. Think Candyland meets Pee Wee's Playhouse - in the good way, not the demented sex offender way profiled on that episode of Law&Order: SVU. Thin crust for me is hit or miss. I like to eat a lot, so I generally prefer the really big bready crust. That means if I am going to like a thin crust pizza they are going to need to BRING IT with something above and beyond. And at Piola, it has already been BROUGHTEN. During the happy hour: free appetizers at the bar. Okay, meow I am listening. They have alcohol. And it's not socially inappropriate to be drinking, unlike that one time at Chuck E Cheese. The pizza does not leave behind a bucket of oil after you have eaten. That is one of my favorite parts of the pizza. Some pizza places, not all, think that if it doesn't leave a bucket of oil and grease behind on your plate then you have not done your job as a pizza maker. I am glad Piola is with me on this one - oil and grease, and buckets of it at that, are bad. Considering Damian's is over there *points* and Brennan's is over there *points* I do not really have an issue with the pricing, although you should be warned if you were expecting cheap food like an infamous Taco Bell date night, then you are not going to clock in at a "cheap" price. But you are paying for the atmosphere, the zip code, and the nice environment. They actually clean the restaurant - an important part. I am on a mission to try everything on the menu. Will I succeed?
